I just moved to Columbia from a suburb of Baltimore, Maryland. I ordered takeout from House of Chow from a delivery app. I ordered crab rangoons, veggie lo mein and walnut shrimp. It was delivered on time and hot. The whole meal with delivery and tip was $36.
The rangoons were OK, nothing special. No traditional red dipping sauce. The walnut shrimp was barely edible and at $17, you would expect it to be delicious. The sauce was sickeningly sweet- granulated sugar (not exaggerating), salt and grit. The soupy sauce featured overwhelmingly breaded shrimp congealed at the bottom with over cooked broccoli, and raw walnuts (usually candied). I ate 3 shrimp and tossed it... so much gritty sugar.
The worst part was the lo mein. I was eating leftovers (thinking it was better than wasting the whole thing) tonight for dinner when I detected something hard towards the last few bites. I thought it was an over-cooked vegetable... it was a metal wire, maybe from a twist tie.
I know what you are thinking... this person is crazy, there is no way this is true. Just another person who is mad ranting on yelp. I am not angry, mostly concerned. I NEVER write reviews like this, but I feel it was too bad an experience not to share with the community.... I hope this place does better for the next customer, I certainly won't be returning.
