Chicago’s Best New Brunches | Eater Chicago

"Whisk owner/chef Rick Rodriguez took over the kitchen at funky Old Town breakfast spot Disco Pancake in December, rolling out a new menu featuring sweet corn pancakes and death by chocolate french toast covered with cocoa krispies, chocolate shavings, and white chocolate sauce. Make it a party with a mimosa or sangria tower. Make a reservation through OpenTable." - Sam Nelson

HASH Review - Ukrainian Village - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Brunch is one of our favorite pastimes, but sometimes spending our rent check on mimosas makes us wish we’d never left home. Sometimes you just want breakfast. In sweatpants. Maybe even entirely alone (the horror). If you find yourself thinking these thoughts, get out of bed, and get yourself to Hash. Hash is the best of both worlds. It feels like eating breakfast in your living room, if your living room was a friendly hipster commune. The mugs are mismatched, the alcohol is BYO, and the music actually adds to the atmosphere. Everything about this place gives you the vibe that Hash isn't interested in conforming to the brunch scene. Think of Hash as the beatnik genius who shows up stoned to Math. We’re all familiar with hash as a dish - meat, potatoes, and, at breakfast, a few eggs. The diced potatoes are heavily seasoned, giving each dish a strong base. You think you know what’s coming next, but then you see truffle aioli, pork shoulder, and the option to upgrade to bacon fat hash. It’s then that you realize you’ve struck gold. If hash isn’t your thing, you’re in good hands with breakfast tacos or the flap jacks. Comfortable, but creative - we hope you’re catching on by now. It’s an order-at-the-counter-then-grab-a-table situation, which is great because the food comes fast and the prices are cheap. The staff is friendly, but service isn’t their gig. They’ve been known to mess up an order from time to time, and the servers seem pretty confused about their role in the whole operation. Oddly, it doesn’t bother us. Probably because the entire atmosphere makes us feel like we just popped a Xanax. They also run a Serious Take-Out Operation, but we’d urge you to stick around. Cold eggs suck, and the atmosphere is quiet and cozy. So grab your beanie, and leave your high-strung friend at home. For breakfast like this, you won’t regret playing it cool for a bit." - Caitlin Doermer

Google
Fun spot! Well plated, the food is good but a bit lack luster, however for the price it does well. The decor is also fun, they have disco balls and the vibe is nice. Place seemed clean. I think this place would be fun for kids too.

Google
Disco Pancake has been a great addition to the neighborhood. It has really delicious food - it exceeded my expectations in that department! The lemon ricotta blueberry pancakes are to die for! And their French toast and avocado toast are both amazing! I love the inside decor - disco balls everywhere. The service was excellent! My only suggestion would be to upgrade the outdoor tables - they are a bit flimsy and wobbly. I will definitely be back!

Google
My first time being in Chicago! We went to this place for breakfast. The restaurant was so cute. The breakfast burrito was soo good omg. I subbed the chorizo for chicken sausage. Very flavorful and fulfilling.

Google
I love this place! The food was delicious and an incredible value. For only $10 I got the two eggs, potatoes and marble rye toast. For $2 more I upgraded to the hash brown waffle. I can’t believe I’ve lived my entire life without having a hash brown waffle. If you love crispy shredded potatoes, then get the hash brown waffle upgrade. It was well worth it! The food came out quickly, and the portion was large. Another sneaky star of the show was the homemade in-house triple Berry jam. So fresh and delicious. The service was impeccable, and the vibe was really cool. Even though it’s called disco pancake the music was all classic rock bangers from Creedence, the Allman Brothers, Elton John and more. The coffee was great and I got free refills. I would highly recommend you check this place out!

Google
We celebrated my friend’s birthday with brunch at Disco Pancake, and from the moment we stepped in, the vibe was perfect. The staff welcomed us with warm smiles, and our table was ready, which made for a smooth start. The food arrived fairly quickly, and I dove into the Lox Benedictine. The flavors were on point—the rich, savory salmon paired with the creamy hollandaise was delightful. The bread was a bit on the crunchy side, but honestly, it didn’t detract from how good everything tasted. My friends were equally impressed with their choices: avocado French toast, a croissant sandwich, and classic French toast—every dish got rave reviews. We couldn’t resist the sweets. The pistachio French toast was so good that we demolished it in minutes. And the cinnamon blueberry French toast? Pure bliss—fluffy, sweet, and indulgent. The overall experience was fantastic. Friendly service, delicious food, and a fun atmosphere with upbeat, but not overpowering, music. Plus, the place is perfect for snapping some great pictures! And to top it off, it was not too pricey. Highly recommend if you're looking for a spot that hits all the right notes.

Google
Fun place for breakfast /brunch. The disco sound track is great! Not too loud so you can talk and heat. I had the florentine Benedict —so good! Fresh and delicious. I asked for medium poach on the eggs, they did it perfectly! ( this signals to me they know how to do eggs). And I was able to sub in fries for hash browns (it was 11am) Will definitely come back.

Google
Standard breakfast/brunch eats in a trendy setting. Was running an errand in the neighborhood and needed to fill some time in between and came across this diner. Really enjoyed the service here, it was fairly empty on the Monday afternoon I walked in, but the server provided impeccable service and was very attentive. Ordered the turkey club and a couple glasses of mimosas. Could only eat one half of the sandwich, it was very filling. The mimosa was also very tasty! Grazed through the fries and overall left satiated. Loved the vibe, decor, and layout. Would come back with a group on a weekend without question!

Nice vibe, kind staff and good food! Terese & Alyssa were absolutely amazing! The food is delicious and the ambiance is fun! Definitely will be back!

Yelp
Step 1, grab your bestie/significant other/stranger off the street..literally anyone you can share two entrees with. Next, you're going to get the Lemon Blueberry Ricotta Pancakes (thank me later) and you're also going to get the avocado toast. Finish your order off with an order of the hash browns and prepare to be mindblown. We went on a Sunday @ 1:15, not busy at all. We sat inside and the atmosphere was iconic, and they have an outdoor patio! Our food came out in less than 10 minutes & we could not believe how good it was. We washed it down with bloody mary's. Yum. Delish, great service, i WILL be back!

Yelp
Let me start by saying this: just because I had a bad experience doesn't mean you will too. Now, onto the review. For a place called Disco Pancakes, the fact that they don't offer a single main dish that includes pancakes as a side feels like a seriously missed opportunity. You can't even order one pancake à la carte which would at least make sense from a menu-design standpoint but no, that option doesn't exist either. I understand not every restaurant gets to design the perfect menu, but that's not even the real issue here. The real issue is this: how do you call yourself Disco Pancakes and still manage to serve pancakes that bad? Honestly, it's impressive in the worst way. We ordered two stacks originally. Both came out completely undercooked gooey in the center. We sent one back to be cooked longer and tried to eat part of the undercooked one just to see if maybe that was their "style." Remember when I said it was impressive? What's even more impressive is how bland and forgettable the pancakes were. No flavor, no personality, no soul. They tasted like pancakes made by someone who showed up to the disco wearing all black and refused to dance just standing in the corner, easily forgotten.

Yelp
TLDR: my pancake was not good. So I wanted to try this place out because it looked cute and was a relatively new brunch place. Ambiance was very cute as expected and I took a seat at the bar. I ordered the waffle hashbrowns and the lemon ricotta. Everyone was nice and food came out in a reasonable time. The food itself was not very good. The hashbrown waffle was good but under seasoned. Now the lemon blueberry ricotta pancakes were just bad. There was a bitterness to them that was not lemon that tasted like it was burnt. Not a pleasant experience. I did not finish them and ended up going to Quiznos across the street because I was still hungry. Overall would not recommend but it is cute.

Yelp
It is a fun place to go out for brunch! Friendly staff and a wide variety of food and dishes to choose from! It was a fun and lively atmosphere! I got the chicken and waffles! It was delicious and the syrup has a sweet and spicy kick to it, loved it! The only major downside was the cream for my coffee was curdled and ruined my cup of coffee. I was able to get some more cream, but the oversight the first time was not pleasant.

Yelp
We ordered an omelette with bacon. The omelette was dry and not very tasty. The potatoes that came with it, ditto. We had much better for less $$$ at a pizza restaurant yesterday. ( Yes - breakfast at. a Pizza place). The Coke I ordered to go was a Pepsi (okayed by me), but was $4 for a small cup. I would not go back to the cutely decorated and named Disco Pancake because despite all the 'cute', I came for the food. $31 for a bad breakfast (tip included) heck no! Never again.

Alana Z.

Yelp
server was so nice and we got seated super quick! Food came out so much quicker than we expected and was so good. I had the blueberry waffles, the loaded table fries, and the disco scramble and all of them were 10 out of 10! The coffee was so good especially for a brunch place and wasn't too sweet. All of the employees were super nice and wait staff was super personalized! will definitely be back!!!

Yelp
Upscale greasy spoon. Upscale due to prices and greasy spoon because I found a hair in my pancakes. Now, the bussing and support staff; top notch. Food was underwhelming to be honest. Coffee was okay. Cream served in am espresso cup; made pouring messy. Spoons weren't offered or in the set of rolled silverware. Will not be returning.

Yelp
Service was slow and restaurant could have been cleaner. Some Menu items were delish some others were hoped to try were not available that day.

Yelp
First time at the newly rebranded Dicso Pancake. Let me start with praising the delightful service from Ericka. She is one of the best, most thorough servers I've ever encountered. Her attention to detail and positive attitude were the highlight of our meal. We will return because of her! The food was also tasty. We tried a shared plate of lemon blueberry pancakes. These are yummy. Though we didn't catch any lemon flavor the blueberries were fresh and plentiful. They serve with a tiny amount of syrup so you'll need more. I ordered the Florentine Benedict which was on point. I went with hash browns that were crispy and delicious (look like mini waffles.) I don't drink coffee but my friends said the small opening for your hand in the coffee cups was a problem for them. Skip the Bloody Mary, it tasted like cold, not quite smooth, tomato soup. What a fun vibe! Strobe lights, neon signs, festive decor and jamming (sometimes a bit too much base) music. Cute outdoor seating area and a bar counter which is cool for solo diners. Right now there isn't a wait but I bet there will be soon. Don't delay! Ask for Ericka!

Yelp
Delicious pancakes & great service. Busy spot. My eggs were overcooked but everything else was Devine!! Vibes are super cool and the interior is beautiful!

Yelp
Great breakfast spot!! Will be returning ! We really enjoyed the food and vibes. Service was very nice too.

Yelp
Boogied on down to the Disco Pancake for a groovy brunch with my family. The decor and ambiance inside was so fun and full of disco balls and great vibes. They also have an out door patio. It wasn't super busy for a Sunday mid-morning so we were seated right away inside. The service was fast in the beginning and the food came out fast but then our waitress didn't check back until the end of the meal which was a little lacking. We enjoyed the avocado toast, a byo omelet, ricotta lemon blueberry pancakes, belgian waffles, and waffle hashbrowns and bacon on the side. All was very good. The pancakes were almost overloaded with the lemon-blueberry topping and I had to ask a bus boy for some syrup, but it still satisfied my sweet tooth. I am surprised that with a name like Disco Pancake that there weren't more pancakes on the menu, but the ones we had were very tasty and loaded with toppings. The side of bacon was nice and thick but was oddly 2 pieces cut in half to appear as 4. What stole the show was the waffle hashbrown - hashbrowns seasoned to perfection and cooked on a waffle iron to create a deliciously crispy delight. Might be the best hashbrowns in the city! We disco-vered a new good spot in River North for a tasty meal and something on the menu for whatever makes you groove!

Yelp
This seems like a fun spot for brunch! I came here after a morning workout class with a friend. Their Crispy Pistachio French Toast was delicious. Our server was helpful when we were making our decisions. Their other Disco Stacks (brunch dishes) seem to have unique flavors. The decor is fun. This seems like a place that you can have both a chill brunch or a boozy brunch. The location is great too!

Yelp
No, plain no. Worst meal I've had in a long time. 4-5 tables filled in the entire place and they sat me by the kitchen. Had to wait for service. Asked if potatoes came with the eggs benedict, yes. No, it was an extra charge. Don't bother, they don't...
google avatar

Shelby H.

Yelp
The food was good! They were really busy so we had about a 35 minute wait. It went by fast for us, we meandered and they just texted us when it was ready. We waited I would say over 10 minutes to be greeted once we were sat. We went through almost 2 water pitchers and the people behind us received their food when we were sat and done eating by the time we were greeted. Our food was behind about 4-5 tables so it took a little bit but it was good! We had the biscuits and gravy, my over easy eggs were slightly underdone and slimy. Two eggs & very thick crispy bacon (yum!), and a benny for the birthday girl. they came out with an awesome birthday dessert which i think made it all worth while! great selection of cocktails on this menu. beware of pricing, $5 for one egg or $10 for (two eggs) 2 eggs, toast, and potatoes.

Yelp
Late night AND brunch, love both. On Friday stopped in for drinks and our bartender David was super conversational and made our drinks well. Decided to go back on Saturday for brunch and the Host Candice(sp) was so nice and profession... Now don't get me wrong, it was a bit of a wait for our brunch, but the food was worth the wait. I had the Waffle burger, which in my opinion was more like a skillet-like dish, but seasoned really well. The menu said it was to be served with a sunny side up egg, but I decided to get mine scrambled. The music was at a level you can hear and still have a good conversation. Definitely picture opps there too.

Yelp
First off, Erica was our server and she did not disappoint. That was the best service I've had in quite some time and absolutely will be back again. The food was great too. I ordered a Disco Benny and breakfast potatoes. More drinks would be a nice offering but other than that, I was very excited to try. Disco Pancake did not disappoint. I liked the decor personally and enjoyed my experience there.

Lauren A.

Yelp
Food was very, very good (I had the breakfast burrito and my partner had the two egg plate). Great service; very highly recommend.
google avatar

Anna C.

Yelp
Cute fun restaurant but I wouldn't say the food is fantastic. Pretty standard breakfast fare, but I liked that the hashbrowns were made in a waffle iron! We asked for the potato's to be extra crispy and they were perfect. Definitely get extra syrup too.

Javi T.

Yelp
Amazing food, amazing ambiance, service was a little slow and I warn against the mimosa tower. We were promised 3 Litres and as you'll see they fell short of that promise. Simply heartbreaking.

Yelp
I rarely write reviews, and never like writing a negative one, but I couldn't let this go. My fiance and I stumbled upon this place on a rainy Sunday, excited to try something new in the neighborhood. Friendly staff, but horribly slow service. And that's just the first of many problems. Given we went on a Sunday, I would forgive the delays if there was a busy brunch crowd, but it was not crowded at all and we were seated right away. But then we waited at least 10 minutes before asking one of the waiters if they could find our server to at least bring water and take a drink order. We then ordered food and drinks at once to avoid further delays, only to have our food come out decently quickly while waiting another 10 minutes for the drinks. It would all be moot if the food was actually good, but it was meh, at best. My fiance got the turkey club and thought it was "the most average turkey club you could imagine." I got the chilaquiles and sadly, they were below average. At least the prices weren't crazy, but you shouldn't have to spend $$$ to get decent brunch. We live downtown so are blessed with many good brunch options. I actually can't remember the last time I've had such a mediocre meal. I will never go here again, and recommend you don't either.

Amber G.

Yelp
Amazing Food! Perfect place to relax and have a good time, Great staff and service. Fun menu and drinks
google avatar

NaywriChi W.

Yelp
Ahh! This used to be Hashbrowns, remember that! This is by the people that's behind PB&J and Grapes & Grains. I had Avocado Toast, Chilaquiles, Steak & Potatoes. For cocktails, I had Martini Espresso and Discolada. The staff and service are superb.
google avatar

Raul V.

Yelp
Make sure to double check on your reservation because they lost ours and didn't want to find a solution. Thanks for the service.
google avatar

Devinito

Yelp
Ambiance is amazing Food is Divine. The opportunity to dine there is truly a blessing. I will definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Shannon J.

Yelp
Fun kitschy place for brunch with friends! Lots of photo opportunities for social. Food, drinks & service were good too.

Bubz B.

Yelp
Well, I try not to be negative because it's not in my nature but this place tipped the scales. The food was flat out awful. I ordered Chicken and Waffles but I received Rubber and Batter. The chicken was dry, chewy and zero flavoring whatsoever. If you order it and they ask you for hot sauce and ketchup, get it because you're going to need it. My wife ordered Eggs Benedict which she could only describe as "meh." She also got an Iced Vanilla Latte which tasted like burned bean water with about 20 oz of vanilla syrup to cover up the awfulness. The jukebox was so loud that I couldn't hear myself think and I had to scream at my wife. The only positive I can say was the young lady at the front. She was very kind and welcoming.

Katie K.

Yelp
Service was a little slow, but server was very friendly. Inside is a little loud so we chose outside. Food was all around amazing. The potatoes were so so delicious

Courtney H.

Yelp
Really liked the French fries. Had the waffle burger (comes with egg and bacon) and it was pretty good but very very greasy. It was pretty busy on a Sunday at brunch time

B S.

Yelp
Amazing service, great atmosphere. Food was really well done, some of the best chilaquiles I have found in Chicago. Totally recommend and will be coming back! Bonus points for ownership being awesome!
google avatar

Natalie T.

Yelp
Fun and funky brunch option Chicago needed! They did a great job on the remodeling with plenty of IG worthy photo areas including a disco tree in the middle of the dining room. I tried both of the frozen drinks and they came with the cutest disco ball straws! Perfect on a hot summer day. I had the lox plate that came fully stacked with all the accoutrements, everything was chopped up so finely which I loved. I also tried the blueberry pancakes and they were delicious! They were thin, perfectly sweet and had plenty of berries plus a gooey sauce and syrup. The music was bumping old school hits and the vibe was exactly how the name described, Disco and Pancakes! There's few other spots like this and definitely worth checking out!

Miggy J.

Yelp
The amount I was charged for ok to bad food was criminal. Very loud environment, hard to have a conversation without yelling. Will not be back and would not recommend.

Betsy G.

Yelp
I'm rating it a 5 because of our waitress, Erica. She didn't miss a beat. Positive, patient, friendly, hard working, informed, courteous, and she didn't rush us out. To me breakfast is all about the experience and I'd def come back! (The music could be softer at breakfast though) Ask for Erica to be your waitress!

Mike K.

Yelp
Amazing food and the mimosa towers are a must , had a group of 8, the place was packed , and music and atmosphere were fantastic

Brookley G.

Yelp
Waiting for food for over an hour. Ordered a coffee and it was given to us with alcohol in it...

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
Disco shits! Terrible waitress and terrible food. The food has no taste and was awful and the vanilla latte was the worst latte I have ever had in my life. It was sugar coffee water. Just gross. My husband and I both got stomach aches.

L A.

Yelp
Avoid this restaurant unless you want fur in your food. I was so looking forward to this, we had a reservation -- then the restaurant allowed a dog into the dining room. Not a service animal, an "emotional support" dog! We left. If someone is going there to eat with friends, that's their emotional support. This indulgence of allowing fur-dispelling, drooling animals into a restaurant is absurd.

Suzanne R.

Yelp
The service here is terrible. Lots of people walking around not doing anything. We had probably three different servers come to our table and still our order wasn't correct. They're new and have some kinks to work out but I'll give them another try.

mona g.

Yelp
This business changed over from hashbrowns to disco pancake from one day to another. I think they could have at least informed the neighborhood. They are good neighbors that live here and that would probably frequent the restaurant a lot if they knew more about the owners and food services that are going to be there so far all I see there when I drive by or walk by is a bunch of punks hanging out, I guess they don't think that the people in this neighborhood are the ones that will probably keep them going and opened. I would have sent flyers out to all the neighborhood because we are the ones that will probably be their customers so I can see now how their customer service is going to be. Get it together people when you open a new business anywhere always consult with your neighborhood neighbors they are the ones that will keep that business opened and Customer Service is key.

Riss H.

Yelp
I was very excited to try this place out, since I loved the place it took over (Hashbrowns). Having high expectations, I was very let down. We waited over 30 minutes to even place our order and be seen by our waitress, and almost an hour to be given the food. 2 of our friends joined us as we were placing our orders but got overlooked (no big deal, they came late) - except for the fact that they didn't get to place their order for at least 45 minutes of sitting there (that's how long it took for our waitress to come by again). Finally once the first round of food came out, mine was wrong. Again, no big deal, ordered sausage and got bacon which they fixed quickly. But the bacon that was brought the first time was as close to raw as they could serve and the sausage looked like it had been cooking for a year. It was rock hard no flavor. Very disappointing experience. There were more things but these were the big ones. I know this restaurant just opened but they definitely have some things to work on. I miss Hashbrowns. And the new design of the place just seems tacky :( bring back Hashbrowns.

Lyle Q C.

Yelp
Pancakes were good but I wanted to just eat the sausage all night and the owner wouldn't let me eat his sausage all night. All in all tho the food was good and the ambiance was quiet though
