Crispy fried chicken sandwiches, wings, and sides with unique flavors

"After a hiatus, chef Chris Bleidorn and partner Aarti Shetty’s chicken shop Birdbox is returning for a one-day pop-up in San Francisco on Sunday, September 8 at Square Pie Guys’ Mission Street location from 11:30 a.m. until sold out. They’ll offer the attention-grabbing Claude the Claw sandwich—a deboned chicken thigh and drumstick with the claw attached—alongside a regular chicken-breast sandwich (Bleidorn’s favorite), quarter chickens, and sides like fries with schmaltz and cornbread; seasoning choices remain spicy falcon or the classic yeast. The South Park/Second Street Birdbox closed in May as the team focused on a New York outpost, and while there are no plans to reopen the San Francisco location yet, the New York ghost-kitchen has taken off with sandwiches selling out daily. The business’s popularity has endured thanks to a commitment to high-quality poultry (hence the claw), and the team is exploring possible future locations in San Francisco, San Mateo, and the South Bay." - Dianne de Guzman
"The team at Michelin-starred Birdsong unleashed phenomenal fried chicken, cornbread, and coleslaw upon South Beach in the fall of 2022. All the birds pass the West Coast check, too: organic, free range, and likely had names such as Ms. Bird and Carlo back on the farm. The space itself is worth a visit, too, with lots of natural light and handsome wood decor." - Lauren Saria, Paolo Bicchieri

"This fast-casual fried chicken shop from the team behind Michelin-starred Birdsong might offer up some of the most exceptional birds in the Bay. Not only do they source quality chicken, all organic and free-range, but they also fry them flawlessly and then douse them in an array of funky and unexpected seasonings: think Classic Yeast, Spicy Falcon, and sour cream and onion. There’s buttery cornbread to be had on the side, and a double-fermented hot sauce if you’re into spice." - Lauren Saria, Paolo Bicchieri

"You could do a whole hell of a lot worse than grabbing a pre- or post-game meal at Birdbox, the fried chicken spinoff from Michelin-starred Birdsong in SoMa. Chef Chris Bleidorn serves super-crispy fried chicken by the box or shoved between sandwich buns and you can have it coated in a choice of finger-licking good flavors like sour cream and onion or the umami-forward Classic Yeast. For those doing it all for the ‘gram, there’s also the famous claw-on Claude the Claw sandwich, a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to sourcing quality chickens only." - Lauren Saria

"Birdbox is the casual Birdsong spin-off that’s home to an excellent fried chicken sandwich with the entire chicken claw still attached. But don’t let fried toes distract you from the fact that this counter-service South Beach spot also runs a mean chicken wing operation. Choose between flats and drumettes (or tenders, for the boneless crowd). We love the ones coated in nutritional yeast, which adds a mildly cheesy and extra crunch to each bite. There’s a sampler of all five of their housemade sauces, but if you’re trying to narrow it down, go creamy buttermilk ranch or spicy mayo." - lani conway, julia chen 1, ricky rodriguez
