Guide to Uruguay's Punta del Este, José Ignacio, and Wine Country

"The most successful restaurant in the area is, without question, La Huella. Designed to look and feel like a boathouse, with a thatched roof, sand-dusted wooden deck flooring, and a staff of perfect-looking, evenly tanned twentysomethings, it's probably the most painstakingly curated simulacrum of effortlessness you'll ever see. It's also the hardest table to score in the busy months of January and February." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Alan Faena Creates La Vie Bohème in José Ignacio, Uruguay

"Good food has been the social glue in these parts since a young Francis Mallmann turned up in the late ’70s; the Michelin-starred chef still has a restaurant in the town of Garzón, and his former protégés can be found at their own restaurants cooking fresh-caught brótola or locally raised lamb inside wood-fired ovens."

This trendy restaurant offers an exceptional beachfront dining experience. Ranked among Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants, it is renowned for its grilled seafood and relaxed yet refined atmosphere . The restaurant’s signature dessert, the dulce de leche volcano, is a must-try. Come early in summer, it can get really busy.

Amazing culinary experience guaranteed every single time! They go the extra mile to get us the best service, definitely a must!

This place is good and has good food. The three starts it’s because it gets so packed the service decreases, and the clientele is just snobby, arrogant people that ruin the whole experience. If you don’t mind getting cut off in line, with no organization, people receiving preferential treatment if they are regulars, and just seeing the staff being treated horribly by all the arrogant people, and you want to just focus on the food, then this is the place for you. Tato pescador is around the corner and it’s an easy going vibe and better people as clientele.

Parador La Huella, located on Playa Brava in José Ignacio, Uruguay, is widely celebrated as one of the country’s best dining spots and ranks among Latin America’s top 50 restaurants. Known for its casual yet chic beachfront atmosphere, it offers stunning ocean views and an innovative menu focusing on seafood, grilled meats, and fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Signature dishes include grilled squid, octopus, and their iconic dulce de leche volcano for dessert. The restaurant is led by Chef Vanessa González, who has been with La Huella since its early days. Its setting—a wooden structure nestled in the sand dunes—makes it a must-visit destination for those seeking relaxed yet refined dining. It has also gained international acclaim, inspiring a sister restaurant, Quinto La Huella, in Miami . If you’re in the area, reservations are recommended, especially during peak season, as it is a favorite among both locals and tourists.
