On the Grid : Tuman's

"For better or for worse, Tuman’s is no longer the sentimental dive bar it was prior to 2003. When it closed it lost its portentous ‘Alcohol Abuse Center’ sign, underwent a number of renovations, and depending who you talk to, lost its character. We were 16 when that happened. As it stands, we’re more than happy to have an easy place to grab a beer (off of one of 28 ever-changing draft lines), throw down on some gastropubby food (custom-ground Slagel Family Farm beef burger with a shallot-port reduction) and play a little shuffleboard." - Potluck Creative

Google
This is an excellent place to eat. The food is outstanding and not at all what you would expect as bar food. The beer is could and there are lots of choices, even really great gluten free beer! The service could not be better. I can't wait to go back.

Natasha A.

Google
This place is definitely a Ukrainian Village vibe. Very cute place for a beer, lunch or dinner. During the summer you can sit outside, seating yourself where you want. They allow kids outside and inside, and there are always plenty of kids here. I have come here many times, they have great Amish Chicken tenders, good burgers, during Oktoberfest they had a great menu highlighting German cuisine and extra large beers. They have a great southwest style salad and adding shrimp is a great option! They have great beer, better service, good hot sauce, and a nice vibe.

Google
I had an amazing time at Tumans Bar! The atmosphere was cozy, the staff was friendly and attentive, and the drinks were top-notch. Every cocktail was crafted, and the food was just as impressive. I look forward to having that next time. Whether you're looking for a fun night out or a relaxing evening with great company, this place is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Google
Steak and eggs are surprisingly good. I don’t like overcooked scrambled egg but it was perfectly cooked, soft and fluffy. Chimichurri sauce was very pleasant and shined steak. Potatoes were little too greasy but still tasty. I hope fries were crispy, cheese burger was flavorful. Food price was very reasonable but sour beer was little expensive.. it was 10oz $10.

Michael D.

Google
Solid classically styled chicago bar. Drinks are standard fair with reasonable prices. Food is very good, especially the bahn mi. If you're looking for a neighborhood bar with good food to drop in on, this is a good spot for it.

Jenny B.

Google
Solid whiskey happy hour on Friday and Sunday featuring the Buffalo Trace rare breeds. I’ve had two meals here and both were just ok. Their dressings are super watery and it just puts a damper on the whole meal. It is a great place to stop for a drink or two and definitely a step above your typical dive bar. The patio is dog friendly so that’s neat.

Mike Z.

Google
I've been here at least 20 times & order food. Always very happy with my order. Highly recommend the Amish chicken, mussels, and any sandwich (minus buffalo chicken because I prefer breast over shredded).

Google
(3/29/24) Carryout. Just left, first timer wanted to checkout their Lenten Fish Fry. I get that the place was busy, however you should want your customers to feel welcomed, not like they’re in your way. Put a smile on your faces (females) and greet & respond hospitably. The fish was hot, however the fries were on the cold side, clearly they didn’t cook it at the right time. Would’ve been nice if napkins were in the bag. For $20(w/tip) you would think.🤨

Yelp
After hearing lots of great things from friends, I FINALLY made it to Tuman's and sat on the patio with my husband and dog for brunch. Service was great! Our server was extra sweet and patient with our dog who dramatically started crying when the server stopped petting her. Drinks - my husband got a half liter of one of their marzens and he enjoyed it. - I loved my blackberry mimosa - we also shared a delicious mango Margarita Food: B.A.L.T. - this was a BLT that included avocado. It was super tasty and I loved the her aioli. The fries were great too. Steak & eggs - This dish was insanely good and the chimichurri was one of the best I've ever had. Now I gotta go back for dinner!

Yelp
My husband and I have been here 3 times now and will keep coming back. The service isn't the greatest, and the food might not be the best, but it's pretty top notch for a dive bar. It's in the neighborhood, the drinks are plentiful, food solid (hubby LOVES the Chicken Sandwich), and service decent. Just do it.

Yelp
Interesting location, parking eh. Food is interesting. There are specials available after 4 p.m that seems good, but parking may be an issue.

Yelp
This has been my local for years and for good reason. Short menu and they nail it, roast chicken is winter fav but brunch also rocks, BALT . Alex the bartender has the best playlists and even surprises my teenager sometimes (wait TV Girl at Tuman's?). Always a Great beer selection too. But the real reason we come back are the awesome people who take care of us while we're there, Sarah, Michelle, Morgan, Brea, Asher, Alex and Jess. Great crew who take great care of us and always have a second to say hi even when it's crazy

Yelp
I'm so glad I came here and didn't read the other reviews. The service was so on point. The food was absolutely fantastic. I'm from Los Angeles and that roasted chicken is DELICIOUS. The only reason they lost a star is for the broken AC so the heat kinda made it miserable.

Yelp
It seems to be the end of an era. I can't believe the fact that the Czarina of the Patio, Sarah, is no longer at Tuman's. We will need to 'shop' for a new home away from home. Tuman's was a lifeline, a source of sanity during COVID and I have continued to enjoy dining in the tent during the cold months. If one of us had a harsh day- the answer was Tuman's. I feel robbed of a precious thing I could always count on. People are what make a place more than food and furniture. It always comes down to the people. At this stage I know the menu by heart and the food is reliably good. But the food stopped being the reason for going there a long time ago.
google avatar

Yelp
Although I do like it was dog friendly . The business was slightly busy the day the 3 of us were at a table. The food was average and the service was lackluster. Had to keep getting our servers attentions. Spend money elsewhere.

Yelp
Delightful. Great service, delicious food, love the variety and unexpected menu. Must try

Yelp
My husband and I were in Ukrainian Village for a Dentist appointment and we needed a place for lunch. We wandered into Tuman's and I think we found a neighborhood gem! It was brunch - I had the breakfast burrito (a solid A) and my husband had the mushroom, pepper, onion, and goat cheese omelette (solid A+)! We each had the blackberry mimosa, a regular mimosa, and jalapeño infused vodka cocktail which was outstanding. Our server was super nice, friendly, and attentive. I hate going to the dentist but Tuman's might be my incentive to go!

Yelp
Terrific food! Interesting weekend specials. Friendly, attentive staff. Nice weekend brunch.

Yelp
It has been a long time since I was here and I should have stayed away. We ate inside due to heat. The food and drink were okay, Nothing to brag about. The service was not good, (bad) she took forever to take our drink and food order and we never saw her after that. No salt , pepper, ketchup, water refill, extra side plates. Nothing!! We tipped 20% because two of the people come for drinks at the bar occasionally. I don't know if they will ever come back after this poor experience. I do not recommend this place. There are so many good places in Chicago to spend your money. This is not one of them. :-(

Yelp
This place everything you need to start (and end) your night. Greta drink options. Plenty of space to spread out. Food. Amazing staff. Went here with a small crew and this place did not disappoint. A+ for being a "local spot" that just does the trick.

Yelp
Old school classic bar with a decent whiskey & beer selections and one GREAT burger! Slagel Family Farm (Fairbury, Illinois) does a custom blend for Tuman's of sirloin, short rib, and chuck -- all naturally raised beef. The bun is soft, but firm enough to grip the burger for big bites. Delicious!

Josh P.

Yelp
old fashion is awful! moved to this neighborhood 8 years ago and loved Tumans for their old fashions; went there regularity with buddy just got the old fashions. Stopped by tonight and it was awful. come to find out regret switched their whiskey from Wellers special reserve, to Four Roses and now it's Benchmark at 80% alcohol,..the drink was awful. Given they're charging even more but using awful whiskey I'm sad to say I won't ever come back after an 8 year run of supporting this bar.

Yelp
Love this neighborhood bar and everyone that works there. *It gives me "Cheers" vibes in regards to the staff and patrons My go to: - chopped chicken salad -turkey burger -grilled chick sammy + sautéed mushrooms -FRIES

Yelp
My coworkers and I came here after work and immediately in a rude manner the waitress demanded we move and broke up our group. We complied and we all sat in separate tables and the lady kept talking down to us. We could not move to talk to one another, she screamed at us to stay seated. I understand keeping order but have some customer service and talk like a normal person, not like Sheldon Cooper.

Yelp
We went here to meet some friends for Happy Hour and were very pleased we went. We got there first so we just sat at the bar. Bartender was quick to welcome us. (Wasn't very busy inside...most people were out on the patio enjoying perfect weather). He was very knowledgeable about their whiskey selection. When the rest of our party showed up, a very pleasant young lady found us a place where we could sit. We didn't eat anything but we had great time with a great staff helping us do so! We'll be back!

Yelp
We rented a car to escape the greater downtown tourist area. We stopped my Midwest brewery and were hungry. They recommended this unassuming place. The draft beers were unique and delicious. We split an app and chicken salad. Sooooo good. Best beer and salad ever

Yelp
I'm afraid too much about this gem because it truly is a treasure, I'll start by addressing the ambiance , very chill , makes it hard to leave, the kind of place you post camp and relax , only downfall is lack of seats at times ,, The service which is always down to earth , friendly and attentive . Being a craft beer guy I have to say , the beer list rotates fast enough and has great variety which includes hard to find releases, Their vivid descriptions of each beer , makes it hard to leave without trying several , but what really prompted my review was the food , OMG is it fabulous , I don't know if they have a chef or if it's somebody's mother back there cooking , but everything tastes as if it were homemade , Tumans has a regular menu with delicious burgers and tasty wings, (BBQ is my go to )but if your really hungry they offer a Amish Chicken with potatoes which is killer. I recently discovered they have a dinner special each weekend and it runs out fast , I had the last 2 breaded pork chops , and they were cooked to perfection ,I couldn't wait to see what was next and I wasn't disappointed , Baby Back Ribs with a Honey mustard glaze was for dinner the following weekend , off the charts delicious , cant wait til next weekend !

Yelp
I went to Tumans for a beer tapping,. Great neighborhood joint with an energetic vibe. Nice food and beer selection. Have been there many times, definitely worth checking out. Parking on the street is no problem.

Jenny K.

Yelp
Doesn't get much better for a neighborhood spot. Dog- and family-friendly patio scene. Shuffleboard in the back area, which you usually have to yourself. Better-than-it-should-be bar food. Highly recommend the Brussels sprout salad and cheese board. Selfishly I wish it were a little more under the radar (so why am I writing this review?!).

Yelp
We love Tuman's and have been enjoying the beers and food here for years. It has the feel of a neighborhood bar, but unexpectedly has an amazing beer menu and delicious food. My boyfriend love how casual Tuman's is and that we can usually get in without a wait. Their burgers, grilled cheese, and mashed potatoes are my favorite. My boyfriend loves their Amish chicken. He says 'they have the recipe down!' I like how the prepare their thin cut fries too. The only thing I didn't really enjoy was the pasta, so I won't be getting that again. Everything else has been above expectations. They also do a good fish fry during Lent! My boyfriend is the beer nerd, so he loves their selection of craft beers. He says they must have some hook up, because they get some really unique things, like Collective Arts and some beer from Spark, NV. We were excited to go back and support them today. We had dinner outside and were able to bring our puppy! The setup was safe and seemed to be in accordance with social distancing rules. It's currently first come, first serve with a 90 minute max. Definitely stop by to support!
google avatar

Yelp
Went there on Monday night football bears game. Got the Amish roasted chicken. AWESOME!! I normally order wine to enhance a dish but this was Soo good it wasn't needed. I wasn't even very hungry. The mashed potatoes and gravy had a wonderful taste like a creamy french onion soup. The roasted broccoli was perfectly charred. Cheese plate was kinda lame in comparison to places like Hidden Root, Lula. But it had some killer walnuts Great beer. Volume too loud for the game which forced the local idiot sports "expert" to voice his blathering louder.

Yelp
Tuman's is dangerously close to my new apartment, but I can't complain about being this close to a neighborhood favorite. Our party of six showed up on a Friday night around 9:00, and no surprise, it was packed. It's a narrow space, one that's hard to navigate if you and a larger group are waiting to be seated. One of the hostesses was incredibly gracious (I so wish I remember her name!) and settled us out of the way in a corner, bringing us drinks shortly afterwards. Eventually we got a table, and proceeded to eat burgers like it was our job. They had a great beer menu with enough variety to satisfy everyone in our party. The burgers were fantastic (again, a little concerned that I live so close). If I'm being super picky, the fries were overcooked. Based on other Yelp photos, it looks like it could have been an isolated incident. Tuman's has perfected a dive-y ambiance that still retains an atmosphere of neighborly camaraderie. We will most certainly be back!

Yelp
What a great neighborhood gem! Tumans is a great place to grab a drink with friends and will always feel welcome

Yelp
Admittedly, I've only been here once, but that one visit this week was magic. Service by Sarah K. was excellent. We came by at 5:30, and we were surprised that this worked as a relatively kid-friendly space (we were in the back). We tried the soft pretzels and the burgers with fries for adults and kids. Excellent. Those damn pretzels were so good that my crazy-picky daughter got angry that there weren't more of them. The burgers were cooked just right and the fries were my kind of greasy (as in, not too greasy, felt fresh cut, etc.). I had an old fashioned and my wife got a beer; on my next visit I will try more of the cocktails but this was a great start. Looking forward to trying the chicken sammie and the oysters, since my neighbors recommend those!
google avatar

Kylie C.

Yelp
Delicious chicken dinner! Also the grilled cheese with tomato soup is the best in the city. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. You can also eat on the patio and bring your dog!
google avatar

Doug W.

Yelp
Good bloody Mary's; Sort of bare, but tasty. Good spot for sure. Outdoor seating, friendly staff, passion for their craft.
google avatar

Keri R.

Yelp
I miss the old Tuman's Alcohol Abuse Center:-) I feel the prices are too high now with not a huge menu. For two drinks and sharing a turkey burger, my portion was $40. The turkey burger was very good, and the pickles are amazing (made in house). However, we asked for extra and she charged us without telling us. Also charged for one little thing of ranch. Just seems they could do a better happy hour or something for a bar that's just a bar and nothing much else.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
What I enjoyed about Tuman's is that my friends could dance their booties off while I chilled at a table drinking my brews. On the night I went, it was craft beer week and Tuman's had some special beers on draft. Total win for me that my friends were happy and Sarah stayed happy. Tuman's is a really chill atmosphere, great music and most importantly great beer!
google avatar

Jeff R.

Yelp
Beers are great, taps always rotating!! Food is wonderful and staff is friendly! A home away from home!
google avatar

Colleen D.

Yelp
Tuman's has one of the best burgers in the neighborhood and although their food menu might not be expansive, their consistency is delightful and their weekend specials keep you on your toes. Their beers are cold, cocktails delicious, and bartenders and wait staff are helpful and kind.
google avatar

Orest K.

Yelp
Invited by friends to meet for drinks. They insisted I should order something to take home (as I couldn't stay for long). Waitress suggested the short rib dinner and my friend said "yes, take that home." Delicious! Delicious!! Meat was so tender and flavorful. Thanks Tuman's for a great meal! Thanks Margaret for the invite!! I will be back. P. S. I grew up in the neighborhood and used to play back in the 60's with the owner's daughter (Karen). Used to go up to the roof and also play in the back room with Karen and other friends.
google avatar

Elisabeth C.

Yelp
Always a great selection of local & regional pale ales. Service is consistently good too - food and drink comes quickly and correctly. Love the divey ambience - Tuman's has become a frequent meet up spot with my boyfriend. Everything you want in a neighborhood bar.
google avatar

Shell S.

Yelp
The beer selection here is honestly the best. Everything rotates but all from places around the city. The chicken dinner and gorgonzola burger are worth any drive or wait to come here. When we visited the servers on the patio were so awesome. We brought our dog and they had water bowls and they have burger patties for dogs! So good!

Maria K.

Yelp
I'll preface this by saying I've had several great experiences with Tuman's. Their chopped chicken salad is delicious and so is their Amish chicken sandwich! Beautiful outdoor seating in the summer. After reading the great reviews about the burgers a few weeks back, I decided to order one. The fries were great but the burger was dry and waaay overcooked. Gave the burger another try this week and was really disappointed. Burnt to a crisp and so hard I could barely chew it. I ordered it medium well. Burgers burn. It happens. But coming from someone who works in the industry, you gotta take the ten minutes to remake it when you can see that it's visibly burnt. This thing was inedible.
google avatar

Yelp
I really love this bar. The decor is cool - it's clean - but the service is horrendous. Came yesterday and had a few cocktails and lunch and more cocktails. They never took any glass or finished plate away. There was only two of us and we were here for about two hours. We might have stayed for another drink but our server was difficult to flag down and worse there was not enough room on the table for another drink. It was seriously gross. They said there was some confusion with a shift change but there were not that many tables. Came in again today / the next day because that is how much I like this place. I count 6 tables and 6 people at the bar. As I type this we are still waiting on bloody Mary's we ordered at least 15 minutes ago. We've already reminded the server once and we are sitting right next to the bar. Terrible service. At this rate this may be my last visit here. We just left - unacknowledged and never served. Heading to another place in the neighborhood that wants our business. Here is the kicker - we just walked into Mariano's and the handed us a Bloody Mary! Boom!
google avatar

Liv R.

Yelp
While I don't get over to the neighborhood often I have had a great time at this neighborhood go to spot every time I've stopped in!! So happy they have survived the pandemic and are still going strong!
google avatar

Viv M.

Yelp
Outdoor seating during covid is comfortably social distanced. Recommend the Cuban sandwich - one is enough for two to share. Avoid the margarita - it was very bitter despite the server's recommendation. Service was just ok, probably not a place where you can expect them to go above and beyond.
google avatar

Liz W.

Yelp
I really love this bar. The beer selection is not overwhelming and always has absolutely incredible picks with new, rare, and exciting taps continuously rotating. My untapped is always buzzing with my friends' jealousy over the beers I have here. No bottles because honestly if you are coming for a can of bud light, you don't get how much of a gem this place is... Some people wrote that the food is OK, I actually think it's one of the best bar kitchens around. Everything is fresh, well made, good options and I swear every time I come here I don't plan on eating and get too overwhelmed by good smells to help myself. The staff, amazing. The owner is easily one of the best people I know in Chicago- won't go into why but if you come you'll understand. Joe, one of the bartenders, is also exceptionally nice and everyone is crazy knowledgeable and helpful. Just enough TVs that watching sports is an option but the neighborhood feel shins through more than a sports bar vibe. I live in lakeview and make a trek easily once a week to see them, so if you haven't it's way worth it. All around a 5-star bar for the entirety of Chicago.
google avatar

Kimberly B.

Yelp
We have been eating takeout from Tuman's almost every weekend during the pandemic. Very sad to see that they nixed the Ham and Cheese Omelet from their brunch menu. Hopefully, it will come back next year.
google avatar

Yelp
Te amo upgrade. This is what I thought while coming back to Tuman's for the first time after an almost 5-year hiatus... also after, er... uhm... well... we'll just cal it a 'number' of alcoholic beverages at various locations where I admittedly only used the Spanish words 'Te' and 'Amo' because after several drinks it sounded like a jumbled version of the words 'Time' and 'To', and that's pretty much how 'Te amo upgrade' drunkenly translated into 'Time to upgrade'. So stupid. So stupid, but it's the only explanation I'm capable of at the momento... which I'm almost positive means 'moment' in Spanish. Still awaiting confirmation, though. Sooo, I had a few. I don't speak Spanish. The 'lube-age' was liberal. And mostly, I just felt like Tuman's is better than the 3-star rating I'd formerly given them and the 3-star rating that they're currently touting. From the moment we walked in, Eli the door guy was a peachy pants. Bearing the cold winter night to check IDs and ensure all in the bar were safe and not over-served. There's ski-ball in the back along with a two other games, a really respectable beer menu, quite a few wines, some on point table service (even for a bar at midnight on a Saturday night) and a few pages of better-than-decent bar food. I remember this being a borderline-dank dive bar about 5 years ago, tonight it had dark wood, a decent and well-behaved crowd and the very best beats, ala your 90s high school dances and your Pandora soundtrack from 6 months ago, you could have ever wished for. Mariah. The Lumineers. Faith Evans. Alexi Murdoch. Puffy. Etc. All that. All that and an upgrade.
google avatar

Danny W.

Yelp
For real yo? Tuman's is totally better than a 3 star bar. Between the awesome patio seating, ski-ball and Big Buck Hunter in the back, the beer selection, and the tasty food I was pretty freakin' shocked at this overall rating. They've got legit burgers and their cuban sandwich was worth a repeat visit as well. Both come with a whole heap of meat and are priced pretty moderately so it's definitely a decent value for what you're getting. They come with choice of crispy fries or a salad and certainly satisfied my hunger. For drinks you won't be bummed about the beer selection. They've got 26 craft labels on tap and some Not Your Father's Root Brew that's listed at about 20% alcohol. The stuff tastes exactly like Barq's only with way more of a bite. The service was super friendly too. We had a cute Irish server and although it was her first day she seemed to know the menu as if she was there for months. Her accent and charm were entertaining and totally made the experience that much more enjoyable. Not sure what it was like back in the day, but again the Tuman's that I tried definitely deserves some more love than they're getting.
google avatar

Kyle H.

Yelp
I used to live by Tumans' when it was the "Alcohol Abuse Center". I never went back then, but have been there a few times this summer to enjoy their outdoor patio. The patio is nice, chill, service is pretty attentive- a good summer hang. But the patio does close very promptly at midnight, and then you'll be shuttled inside, to a different scene, entirely. The inside decor is old school ethnic bar with wood trim, a dancefloor for the DJs that "wickywicky" over good songs instead of just letting them kick it. They have Golden Tee in the back by the bathrooms, so there's lots of nooks and crannies to hang out in. Where Tumans starts failing is the late night indoor crowd, intent to get wasted, spill beer on you, and grind on each other like it's the basement of a Frat party. Maybe they miss those days, but I surely don't. Solid outdoor choice for the summer- I'll just take my cranky old ass home at midnight, no worries!

Yelp
Sat at the bar, my bartender was great and very attentive. I ordered a burger with the aged cheddar and it was delicious and was cooked to the right temperature. Their beer selection is diverse in style with a lot of local breweries. I tried Goose Island's sour beer and it may be one of my new favs.

Yelp
We love going to Tuman's for a quick bite and drink! Their drink selection is very robust and the food is amazing - highly recommended for a bite.

Yelp
I liked this place better when it was Tuman's Alcohol Abuse center, and was a little grittier. Now it's all fern bar, with an oh so chic DJ playing ironic hipster hits. However the waitress couldn't have been more charming, bringing a glass of cherries after she brought our drinks. For two giddy women who still feel the need to make each other laugh by doing that cherry stem trick. And my friend's now-college age daughter who carries on the cherry stem torch. Yeah, and I'm still the queen of that trick. SNAP!!

Yelp
Solid divey bar with elevated and flavorful food. Good outdoor seating area as well as indoor bar area with some hidden hooks. Really good beer list, and very descriptive menu with beer advocate rankings. We both got burgers. You get to choose your cheese from a list of local cheeses which is a fun added touch. Really good and juicy meat. Shoestring potato fries on the side.
