The timeless atmosphere is particularly appealing in the evening, when the only other people on the island are Torcello’s eleven inhabitants, ensuring an authentic and romantic lagoon experience. "There would be no Venice if not for the island of Torcello, which was settled by Romans who were fleeing a Hun invasion in the 5th century and today has less than 20 permanent residents. In 1935, the owner of Harry’s Bar took over a tavern on the island and transformed it into Locanda Cipriani, a place everybody from Ernest Hemingway to Princess Diana have visited. You’ll get to eat the freshest fish and cold plates of vitello tonnato in a lush garden where there are plenty of vines and a covered pergola. What you come here for is the restaurant's garden, which is open from late spring to early autumn and is one of the best places in the lagoon to visit with a large group of friends and celebrate into the evening. The bartenders make the best negronis and have an extensive wine list that includes pours from most regions on the Italian peninsula. If you don't want to be marooned on Torcello Island, come for lunch.
