Bamurru Plains, near Kakadu, Northern Territory, Australia - Explore & Book

"Getting here is no easy feat. You fly into Darwin, then either jump in a chartered 5-seat Cessna to a remote airfield followed by a bumpy 20-minute Land Cruiser transfer through the bush; or you do it yourself and drive the 3 hours from Darwin along roads of dwindling quality - first sealed, then dirt, then into the middle of nowhere. But the remoteness of this eco-retreat - it sits on a 300 sq.km. farm called Swim Creek Station at the edge of Kakadu - is very much part of its appeal. It's a place to switch off, big time.Once at Bamurru, you'll be mighty glad you came. You’re greeted with fragrant face towels and a cooling drink, then go bouncing through the bush in the back of a 4WD on a wildlife-spotting safari. Come sunset, your guide slows down on a track that turns out to be the wall of the floodplain - during the wet season, this dry land transforms into a lake on which airboats dock. Here you can watch the wallabies and water buffalo graze in the golden afternoon light, and help yourself to icy beers. An hour later, as the sun goes down, you’re sipping smooth Australian wines and savouring delicate canapés on the deck of the lodge. Throughout your stay, these luxurious touches abound. It’s like the best of African safari lodges transported into the outback - with crocs instead of zebras and water buffalo replacing hippos. The attention to detail in the quirky bush-style bungalows and suites - very eco-minimalist and open-sided (just nets separate you from the wildlife) - brings a luxury of its own. Provided you come prepared for this, you won’t miss the minibar or spa bath one bit. Who needs a flatscreen TV or WiFi when you get a 180-degree view from your bed, with binos and guidebooks supplied? Highs Abundant birdlife and wildlife includes plenty of water buffalos, wallabies, huge crocs, wild boar, brumbies and dingoesPlenty to do besides classic safari drives: bird-watching, bushwalks, exhilarating air-boat rides, scenic helicopter flights - all with capable and fun guidesStunning landscapes - lush floodplains, monsoonal forests, savannah woodland, billabongs blanketed with waterlillies, and spooky freshwater mangrovesEnormous, imaginative bush shower rooms with corrugated iron walls and tree trunks for soap holders - and fragrant natural soaps too!Imaginative "bush tucker" cuisine using local ingredients, with an open bar boasting delicious Australian wines, including some rarities Lows Couples seeking romance might not like the communal diningThe Safari Bungalows are made for sleeping, with little else other than the bed: no comfy sofas or hammocks for chilling out, although there are sofas in the main lodgeWhile the infinity pool is welcome after a sticky day of wildlife spotting, it could be largerThe Cessna flight from Darwin is not cheapHumidity here can be fierce and only 3 of the Safari Bungalows have air-conditioning (at an extra cost)" - Lara Dunston

The best safari-style luxury getaways near Darwin - SilverKris

"An African-inspired, luxury bush camp on the coastal floodplains of the Mary River within Kakadu, offering an immersive safari-style experience with close wildlife encounters. The chef highlights native and locally sourced produce, and a standout is a fully hosted three-course dinner accompanied by the lodge’s resident frogs; the all-inclusive rate includes an open bar. For maximum immersion, the Kingfisher Suite — three times the size of standard bungalows — provides a private dining space and floor-to-ceiling mesh walls that bring the outdoors in. The property spans roughly 300 km² of biodiverse floodplain where safari bungalows are positioned for wildlife viewing, and an extensive touring programme offers airboat tours, river cruises in search of basking crocodiles, birdwatching, astronomy evenings, overland safari drives and guided wilderness walks, plus arranged day trips to ancient rock art and Indigenous cultural sites in Kakadu and Arnhem Land. Approximately a three-hour drive from Darwin." - Dinesh Ajith

This is a very difficult review to write as some parts were really good and others pretty disappointing.||The rooms - we opted for an AC cabin which actually was not need in June. This would vary by time of year. The rooms are tiny with an almost impossible to access veradah. The bathroom was surpisingly large with a great shower. We have been in far more remote camps with much better beds and linen there is no way they are up to standard for the prices. However not toally uncomfortable either.||The Station - we found the buffalo station facinating with fantastic bird life. We only saw one crocodile the entire time. As previously mentioned activities are limited. The air boat was fun but really did not need multiple trips.||The guides, Cory, Megan and Jack were all fantastic as were the all the staff.||The food - really hit and miss. They started with good quality ingrediends but seemed to be able to serve it only warm and with very poor flavour combinations. Drinks were fine. Although one couple expected higher quality wines.||We were there at a time of very low occupancy and I would hate to be there when busy. They really need a more efficent coffee machine especially for breakfast.||The management - IMO in place like this the managent should be very visable and they were not. ||The highlight of our trip was the day cultural trip to Kakadu - we loved it.||I am glad we went however at the price it leaves a bad taste in your mouth for Australian tourism.

A great place to connect with nature.|Lots of bird life here , quite spectacular when you see the flocks of birds on the wet lands take flight.|The guides were great and shared lots of knowledge during the jeep trips and airboat ride.|There are quite a few buffalo, wild horses and pigs around the property which are great to watch during your downtime.|It’s a beautiful spot. |The accommodation is rustic but comfortable , clean and functional .|The food was very good and chef was good at accommodating for people’s requirements.|The team were all very welcoming and helpful. |I would say that 3 nights is probably the right amount of time to stay and get the full experience.

We went for 2 nights and arrived by charter plane. This is a very expensive place to visit and we expected more. The airboat safari and the drives were interesting however the current management is not at a level that matches the cost. We were told to move our flight back from 1 PM to 11:30 on our last day which made us miss the only thing to do on the property, the airboat tour. We had absolutely nothing to do but watch the staff wash the floor in the lodge. The pool, although beautiful is too cold to swim in. ||Positives: Kory the safari guide was extremely friendly and informative on birding. Our Air Conditioned Cabin was next to lodge so very handy and well made, no holes in screens. The lodge was screened and comfortable. Drinks, nice wine, good hard alcohol options, good non alcoholic drink options. Good cold water supplied. Loads of birds and wildlife. Nice setting. Cold wash clothes on return to camp. Mar the staff member who handles ordering drinks and showing to room. Family dining room in lodge is comfortable and open to socializing. ||Negatives: Management, the food! worst food we have ever had in a exclusive remote camp, very crabby chef and no options at all only give you one lunch and one dinner, no appetizers served in lodge before dinner, limited snack options. Pool not heated, swimmable but only for short time, biting ants at pool sofas. Strong dead animal smell as leaving the camp on driving tour in the afternoon. Many of the cabins are not Air Conditioned which in this part of the world is hard to understand. No river cruise as boat is broken. condition of the tour vehicals are very dated. Owners dont show respect for guests as proven by driving in front of our open tour jeep kicking up loads of dust while traveling in a closed SUV. Water Buffalo are live shipped to Asia for human consumption, better to process them in Darwin and ship, live shipping crowded animals is uncaring for these gentle beasts, must be very stressful for them. ||Will not recommend going unfortunately.

Bamarru Plains works on the African safari model. The meals were first rate, prepared by a French chef and with knowledgeable wine pairing. Snacks and drinks were always available, with a great selection of wines, beers, and spirits. The public areas overlooking the plain were exceedingly pleasant, complete with infinity pool. Similar to the African model, there were activities in the morning and late afternoon. The morning activities were on the water. Although were we warned that the airboats were not available due to low water levels, we did go on the airboats. The afternoon activity was a wildlife and scenic drive around the property (an active buffalo station), with plenty of birds and wallabies. Almost all of the guides were very informative. We did the optional day excursion to Kakadu -- it was very expensive but worth it. The staff was very helpful, especially in dealing with our lost luggage and changing our return flight. The one qualm was the quality of the accommodation. We had selected a cabin with AC, which was essential in early October. But there were no bedside tables, the area for clothing storage was minimal, and the light in the room after subset was wholly inadequate.

We loved our experience at Bamurru Plains, it's a very special experience in a very special location. Without exception the staff were amazing and the tours incredible...the airboats, as most people have said, are the highlight but the afternoon safaris are also special. The guides are knowledgeable and really add to the experience. I liked the fact that we got to know a couple of them a little bit better when they hosted dinner. ||Dinner, like all meals, was exceptional, Tiffany and her team created some magic in the kitchen which defied the remote location. ||The accommodation is unique, very clean and l loved the 'tent' feel that connects you with the environment and wildlife and birdlife, it's very special! It was around 35 degrees each day we were there and it was hot in the room but fine if you are directly below the roof fans... the pool is also a good place to hang out in the afternoon. I can see why some people might struggle with the heat but l would (and will) be back.

We had a wonderful stay at Bamurru Plains. It was frustrating to read other reviews that complained about the heat and lack of AC in their room. Any little research would have informed you that it's very hot there. It also makes sense that AC rooms are slightly more expensive because they provide an additional amenity - just like any other hotel or camp. ||We stayed in an air conditioned room which was perfect for sleeping and provided more than sufficient cooling. The room was smaller but comfortable. The bathroom is screened and large with a great shower. The week before we arrived, the dry season really started so the humidity was pretty low. This allowed us to spend more time outside during the day. I do recommend wearing bug spray at all times while outside, even during the day. ||The air boat tours were really fun, pretty and interesting. We also enjoyed the drives. The guides were knowledgeable and we learned a lot about the bush. ||The food was heavenly. Every meal was fantastic - the chef really set the bar. Of all the places we stayed in Australia, Bamurru had the best bar offerings in terms of cocktails and wine. They even have green ant gin which is a must-try. We enjoyed the communal dining aspects and getting to know the other guests during our stay. ||We stayed for 3 nights which was enough to see everything. You can even get away with 2 nights if you arrive in the early afternoon of your first day.

It's difficult to assign a single score because some aspects of the hotel are amazing while others are a challenge. The main plus is of course the area. The early morning boat trips take you to places of exceptional beauty and solitude. On one of them, we saw a Mitchell Water Monitor, a highly-endangered species. The bird life is phenomenal. Out front, wallabies and water buffalo roam about the property. The challenge, not surprisingly, is the heat. Since the rooms are set up with mesh all around the front and sides, they cannot be air-conditioned. This makes sleep a challenge. When we where there (late April), it didn't cool down until 3 am or so. If you are two couples travelling together, think about renting the Jaibiri cabins as they are connected and share a much-needed plunge pool. Food was very good, but perhaps more elaborate, especially for lunch, than needed. We all felt for the chef and kitchen staff who were working in furnace-like conditions. So, you will experience an amazing place, but be prepared for a bit of sleep deprivation.

I recently had an unforgettable 3-night stay at Bamurru Plains Wetlands Lodge, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Nestled deep in the wilderness, this lodge offers a unique blend of luxury and adventure. The meals are nothing short of sensational, with each dish showcasing the finest local ingredients and expertly prepared by talented chefs. The staff are fantastic, always going above and beyond to ensure every guest feels welcome and cared for. The scenery is awe-inspiring, with breathtaking views at every turn. Waking up to the sight of wallabies hopping and water buffalo grazing on the floodplain right outside your room is an experience like no other. The airboat tours each morning were undoubtedly the highlight of our stay. Skimming across the water, surrounded by an abundance of wildlife, was exhilarating and provided unforgettable memories. Bamurru Plains is truly an oasis in the Northern Territory's top end. The sheer abundance of wildlife in their natural habitat is both exhilarating and awe-inspiring. The passion and knowledge of the guides and hosts enhance the experience, as they share their insights and stories about the local environment and its inhabitants. Whether you choose to relax by the pool or explore the plains through one of the many optional tours, every moment at Bamurru Plains is a delight. The delicious, chef-prepared meals are the perfect way to cap off a day of adventure. I thoroughly recommend this bucket list adventure to anyone seeking a unique and unforgettable getaway. The combination of stunning natural beauty, exceptional service, and luxurious accommodations makes Bamurru Plains a must-visit destination. I would also like to extend a special thank you to the staff who made our stay truly unforgettable. From the very beginning, we were welcomed by guide Jon, whose enthusiasm for the lodge is infectious. It is evident how much effort he puts into ensuring each guest has a wonderful experience. Sam and Corey led our safari and airboat excursions, showcasing everything the lodge has to offer. A big thank you to Liam and Tiffani, the chefs who prepared wonderful breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. They thoughtfully accommodated my request for a vegetarian menu, and every meal was on par with a Michelin-starred restaurant. Additionally, thanks to general manager Jo and lodge supervisor Matt, whose diligent work ensured that any issue was resolved promptly. These were the most memorable holidays, and I write this review with pride and gratitude as someone who has traveled to every country in the world. Zhdanov Alexander
