Sabor A Mexico

This is my favorite place on the upper east side. The food is great and fresh, the drinks are strong and good! This restaurant is owned and operated by a family of professionals that put service first and set a standard for dining on the UES. The ambiance is great for both a solo venture or a family and friends dine in. You will not be disappointed. Enjoy 🌹

My experience at this small Mexican restaurant was not very pleasant due to the service we received from the waitress. Although I have to admit that the food is very good, and we left a tip for the excellent chefs. The food is delicious. But the service provided by the waitress leaves much to be desired. She didn't even offer us the chips and salsa sample. She gave us because we order it, but she definitely gave it to the other customers sitting at the next table. In my opinion, I think she should be more empathetic with customers and treat everyone equally.

Amazing! The staff was incredible and the food was great. Came in for cinco de Mayo. The frozen margarita is so good. I really enjoyed the chicken and Birria enchiladas. Will definitely be going back. Amazing staff

This was a solid lunch + the best mojito! The service was not a problem for us at all. We did ask her her name and thanked her and found her to be very warm, more so than I’ve experienced at other places around here. I can definitely see myself coming here again 🌮

Loved this establishment for lunch on a summer Saturday. The Tortas sandwich was delicious! T he bread was warm and toasted and the grilled chicken filling tasty and not overly salty. Perfect!

We had one guest needing wheelchair access, one big step, but totally worth the lifting. They were so sweet to accommodate us and drinks were amaizing!

By far the very best Mexican restaurant on the UES - and there are a lot of them. Food is truly excellent. Love the staff. And, while the restaurant is pretty small, if you want a non-noisy, calm place for dinner, it can’t be beat. Would give it 6 stars if possible.

Chicken Burrito was almost the worst Burrito I have ever had! It was 75% rice! Some beans, and very very little bit of chicken! 😁 so be aware!

Really great spot! Good food, atmosphere, and service. Just moved in the neighborhood and discovered this gem. I liked the chicken enchiladas with green sauce! Rice and beans were on point! My boyfriend enjoyed his Chimichanga. We will be back!

I've never been disappointed by Sabor A Mexico. Staff and food is solid. I wish they'd make menus more easily available online. Doesn't get too crowded inside from what I've seen.

I usually get the fajitas. They're always good. Drinks are strong and affordable and happy hour 3pm daily. The staff are so kind too. Highly recommend. And I'm a chef.

The absolute BEST Mexican restaurant in NYC. The waitstaff is unmatched. Beyond friendly and personable. The margaritas will make you want to stay and drink all night. I love this place!! 10/10!

Community-activists. Purveyors or terrific burritos, tacos, fajitas & sangria. Sabor is a staple of the neighborhood. They support us as we support them. Love this spot. Recommend to everyone.

This place is a little gem in the neighhorhood!!! I probably walked by it 1,000 times without eating there because its down a small flight of stairs and tiny. I am so glad I stopped in. The owner is very nice and the service is quick. The place is tiny and very casual, but clean and cute. I highly recommended the Tortas which is Mexican Sandwich. The bread is amazing and the sandwich is so tasty. It is worth the trip just try it.

Came here after a beach day and worked up appetite. The spot was cute and clean. Our server was perfect. Tipped her extra for being a peach. Drinks were great and at affordable prices. Food was eh. My sister got a burrito and enjoyed it. My friend got a quesadilla and had no complaints. I ordered pollo con mole and it was a little under whelming. The chicken tasted fresh and juicy but I didn't have enough rice for the meal. We shared nachos and I was disappointed with how soggy they were. The ground beef was too wet and under seasoned and made the chips soggy. They topped the chips and beef with shredded cheese that did not separate into our chips. The jalapeños tasted like they were in old rancid water. I was honestly upset with the food but it was fine. I wouldn't go back.

Mediocre burrito. Bland watery salsa. Forgot my drink and said they would bring it, but never came back. I miss you Otto's.

I can't say enough good things about Sabor!!! We come here all the time, I literally dream about the margaritas. They're better than any margarita I've ever had. You can tell they are made from fresh ingredients and shaken perfectly. The food is great and always fast. Much love to Luis!! He always does an amazing job and is so nice to everyone. Ordered lunch special which was seemed like a good deal. The chicken chimichanga had mostly rice, hardly any chicken and quite bland.

2 stars because it was edible. A lot less salt would've been a value of a low-grade 3 stars. But that'd be misleading even then, wouldn't it? I wanted to like it, truly. But the tipping point, pun intended, ha! -- the reason why I'm freed up so quickly after my meal was delivered is due to the portion size [in relation to the prices]. Listen, you're in New York -- expense is relative. Easy come, easy go. From a daily [and I mean daily] seamless UES orderer, take it from me, the portion:price ratio= misaligned. As the other folks have mentioned, the food is not a disaster and the portions are slightly, well, unscrupulous. I ordered a quesadilla and received 2 soft shell tacos, no lie, 35% full, salty, but totally edible and not gross. Here's the scene, for $18 you receive two 3" soft-shell flour tortillas w/your filing choice -- but secretly unfilled. And they are sorta mean about it, well, at least the woman I spoke with. I was only inquiring if I received the full adult order of steak quesadillas, as I genuinely assumed there must be a portion of the meal missing and got tons of push-back from the lady on the phone. "ma'am I gave you what you ordered" type vibe. Guess it's on me for ordering at the end of night. Always found it strange if you're gonna stay open, might as well try a little. Check out the photos. And yes, I clarified quesadilla v soft shell, you know, just to be extra sure. Nope, it's $18 for a 3" soft shell tacos for sale out these parts Hard pass

Avoid this place. Worst Mexican food in the UES. There are plenty of good places around. I ignored the first time I went, but this time was even worse. Ordered a grilled chicken torta sandwich, verified when I picked it up that I was picking up a grilled chicken torta, and they gave me a TIny ground beef torta soggy from all the oil. Not only was it wrong, but it was by far the worst torta I've had. It was missing mayonnaise, bean spread, barely any avocado. It wasn't a torta, it was just some crap sloppy joe sandwich. Tasted like the American ground beef taco flavoring.

My life-long search for the perfect nachos came pretty close to being fulfilled at Sabor A Mexico. We ordered the shrimp nachos, which were topped with cooked onions, mushrooms, refried beans, tomatoes, melted cheese, and a generous serving of shrimp. I have lived in this neighborhood for years, but never noticed the small restaurant on first. We were drawn in by the stellar Seamless reviews, and I am so glad. We will definitely be ordering these nachos again, and may try some of their other variations on nachos (there seem to be many!).

The delivery here is pretty good. It definitely hits the spot when you want Mexican food. The food is always consistently good. My favorite thing on the menu is the tostadas, which can either be topped with beef or chicken. I also love the hard tacos with ground beef. They have fresh made guacamole which is very oniony. Tbh slightly too oniony for me, but the chips are tasty and cut perfectly thick for dipping. The salsa is also great. Would recommend to others,.

Came here for a quick bite after 10:30 pm- glad the kitchen was still open! Ordered the nachos and three hard tacos- the chorizo tacos tasted better than the beef tacos FYI and the chicken nachos came with beans which I wasn't a fan of. Had I known the nachos would have included the beans even bough it had a protein in it, I probably wouldn't have ordered it. Wasn't a fan of the nachos- needed a little more flavoring to it which is why I reduced a star. The waitress was really nice and told us to take our time even though we were the last customers in the restaurant since it was so late.

Affordable and cozy little Mexican place around the block from where I live. Nothing too notable but decent food and service. Soft and hard tacos are pretty good here. Quezadillas are ok. Pretty standard menu with all the regular Mexican meal options. No alcohol other then beer and sangria served. Lunch specials Mon - Fri. Good choice for dinner when craving this type of meal and places like Pio Pio a few feet away are jam packed. But why do they charge for chips and salsa? I can never figure that one out since most other Mexican places put those on the table at no charge.

The positives - being open during this difficult time! Also, excellent margarita - I was concerned when I unpacked pale liquid in a takeout container - put poured it over ice & it was really good and strong (got it with no ice, of course). Also the guac was delicious. The reason I am not awarding more stars if that the steak in the steak fajitas should be much better. It's advertised as char-grilled & sauced. I asked for it rare, but got very thin, well done strips, not at all like the delicious steak fajitas I've had in most other places. Nevertheless, I will try them again.

Fast and attentive service. Drinks - margaritas are OK , they aren't big and they don't have frozen margaritas. I asked for strawberry margarita but they only do original margaritas. Beer- only Mexican beer Food - I ordered 3 tacos suaves ( beef and chicken ) they were very good. Small place with good food. Don't come here to drink , come here just for eat and u will have a great experience.

This place is one of the more legit Mexican joints in the city. The rice and beans are just delicious - and they're REAL Mexican beans (refried pinto, as opposed to black). This place has really, really good burritos, but they do skimp on beans. Also their portions are a bit small. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 for those two reasons. I love the chile relleno - the sauce is so good and the chile has a great kick to it. The horchata is amazing too, as well as their salsa verde. All around good spot, highly recommend.

Food is pretty good, but service is the worst in class .... 1) They are sweating all over the food because they will not invest in a fan or AC in the establishment 2) They get mad because you complain that they don't have big portions. 3) I have been ordering here for ages and it seems the portion size have been drastically decreasing ... most likely because they are going out of business ... Their food isn't bad, but only if they had people who knew how to run a restaurant in the front. The girl in the front doesn't know what she is doing. I am sure she is the daughter, but she is completely lost. I wish they would just get their act together because can be a great business.

Never again The personal in this Restaurant has bad attitud And The Food is very expensive I call for delivery And they take more then one hour to delivery & i got The order incomplete & i call back they answer me w/ bad attitud so i dont recomend this place at all

my wife and I came here on a whim and loved it. She's mexican and said everything tastes home made. She loved it more than I did. The restaurant was very clean. Bathroom was super clean as well. We will be back again.

My absolute favorite tacos and margaritas in the neighborhood. Everything feels right when I take home a few tacos, maybe a chicken tamale, and start my weekend right with a dinner from Sabor a Mexico. It's a small place, but the outdoor seating is ample and the staff are eager to help you enjoy your time there. I can't recommend it enough.

We've been coming here for years and this family-owned small restaurant is one of the top Mexican restaurants in the city. Everything is fresh and delicious - guac, tacos, fajitas, burritos, enchiladas. We've devoured it all very happily. Margaritas are real juice and delicious, prices are fair, and the service is always very friendly. Love this place.

Don't bother to eat at this restaurant. The quality of the food has gone down. Way down. I ordered a chicken quesadilla and their was hardly any chicken in it. The tortilla was hard to chew and the entire quesadilla tasted like it had just been reheated and not freshly cooked. It's the same as eating at Taco Bell and expensive for the quality and quantity of food you're getting. I won't ever go back. I feel like I wasted my money there and it was a big disappointment.

This was the worst food, Mexican food I've ever ever ever had. Literally right out of the can. There were five adults and 2 -5 year-old kids. We had two pitchers of sangria and each pitcher gave us a half a glass of sangria four glasses each. They charged us $35 each pitcher. Which I spoke with the manager and he reduced it to $20 each pitcher. I don't care whether you believe me or not but if you want to waste your money on Mexican food this is the place to go. Never ever ever ever again. The reason for 2 stars and not one, waiter was cool . The food was not good, no real salsa. 9 bucks each small portion of guacamole. I wish, I really wish I took photos of the food before we ate it. Extremely disappointing

I loves me a good lunch special! Ok I work in the hood so this review is for lunch specials only. The steak taco salad is so good! Tortilla bowl filled with mexican rice, refried beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream, peppers, onions, and a nice portion of steak (I think flank steak). Must add guac for $1. Salsa and chips are included with lunch special. Also have had chicken enchiladas verde, also good. With a soda my bill with tax and tip is usually $12. ;)

This place is was a bit disappointing. The servers were friendly which is a plus however the restaurant itself was completely empty except for us. The food is a little over priced for the quality. We got guacamole as an appetizer and it was tiny and needed a good dash of salt. The hot buffalo wings were just sauced in literal Tabasco and were hot hot hot. The enchiladas were okay but their green sauce was a little too sour. The cactus salad was okay tho! Overall not worth the trip, probably won't return.

So, here I am, almost 2 years from that first review. I think, at the time, I thought I was eventually going to find better Mexican food in NYC. I didn't realize that this place was about as good as I was going to get in this city. I've gone several times since that first review, and between the good service, and trying several other dishes, all of which I liked (helloooooo chilequiles.....), I have to bump it up to a 4. This really is a nice little neighborhood place with good service, good food, a decent price, and the ability to get a table without a wait. I'll miss it, as I move down to Central VA, where good Mexican food (outside of my own kitchen) is even harder to find than in NYC.

Excellent, once food arrived the server even asked I'd like to switch to a larger table to accommodate my meal and articles I'm reading for graduate school. I feel that he was a very gracious host and very attentive. The Bistec Mexicana was delicious too.

Very poor quality. I ordered grilled pollo, pollo loco, and al pastor tacos and they all looked and tasted the same - rubbery bland meat, cheap elastic tortillas and no toppings beside cilantro (no toppings could have made these good tacos). I don't often write negative reviews, but I thought this place was a poor excuse for Mexican food. You can get much better and cheaper elsewhere. One word: Unsatisfying

I ordered here for lunch for the first time today. I love Mexican food and I figured it was close enough to get a quick delivery while I was handling work calls. Maybe half hour after I ordered I kept getting calls on the other line from a number I did not recognize, finally after the fourth time I picked up and it was the restaurant to let me know my order was downstairs. I said, well ok he/she can come up , I'm on a business call, she replied "well, that's a project, right?? (Public housing) We don't go upstairs in the projects" I said lady this is 94 street, are discriminating because I live in the projects??? Well he's not going to upstairs, she replied. I mean seriously??? So they would deliver to the door to building across from me but just not here. I thought the food would make up for this upsetting experience, but no. There was not much authenticity in any of the flavors. The meat tasted old and no type of seasoning at all. Needless to say I will not be ordering from there again

Sabor is our favorite Mexican restaurant, hands down. This is a family-run super authentic restaurant and the food is consistently delicious. The drinks are excellent too, and even though they're on the pricier side, I guarantee you're getting your money's worth. We come here about once a week and have never been disappointed. Delivery is always fast and fresh too!

Sabor A Mexico is a small intimate place and we had a good server. She was attentive and followed up with us frequently. We ordered margaritas and horchata which were great and worth the price (we went during happy hour!). The food was also really great, however the only thing is that the price does not match the portion of the food received. I recommend the soft shell tacos and quesadilla as they were made well. The 4 star rating is only due to the portion size of the food.

We stopped by here on a whim to get a drink and nachos. It was adorable and clean- the waitress was extremely nice and efficient. We ordered two Mexican beers, a margarita and she brought a little tray of nachos with a unique hot salsa, then we ordered a plate of nachos that was perfection! We actually wanted to stay for dinner and I saw a large slice of vanilla cake that I am still thinking about! A neighborhood gem! Our bill was only $35!!!

Small 18 seat restaurant with quality food. Chips and salsa to start were excellent. Veggie Fajita was very tasty, but could have used more than the 3 tortillas. For lunch it was a bit of an extravagance at $15 with club soda. Would be nice to see lunch specials. Restaurant is clean with mexican music nicely played in background. A step above the fast food non chain mexican joints. Decor is very nice with quality tables and chairs.

After dinner in the area, we wanted something sweet and savory. Thanks to Yelp, we found this place for some herbal tea and TRES LECHE! Fresh, flavorful, very moist ( as it should be) yet not soggy. Cute little restaurant with friendly service. Sat by the window and watched the Upper east side walk by. After we came, it got busy. Would come back to try the food. Tres Leche here is Delish!

ordered take out from here. expensive, below average food. the beef and al pastor tacos were so dryyyyy and unseasoned. guacamole is expensive and i prefer chipotle's guac ???

We ordered combination steak and chicken fajitas. It was really delicious! They also had a jalapeño margarita that totally rocked. Staff was friendly and gave us an extra tortilla even though we didn't ask. Nice restaurant!

This an adorable little street pop in style Mexican restaurant. I love the quaint authentic atmosphere and food. I found their tacos to be slightly bland and void of flavor. But this local reminded me of home, San Antonio and the food was still good. So for that reason I give a fair hearty 4 star. I would go back-

I don't know why this restaurant was not full of customers and half empty. The food was very fresh and they listened to our preference for level of spice. Very friendly and great service! We had the seafood soup (huge shrimp and salmon), guacamole, fajitas and soft tacos. All excellent.

I ordered a Chorizo hard shell taco. It was the worst! Chorizo was dry and brunt to hell. Cheddar cheese on a taco?! I felt like I was eating school lunch leftovers! I also had the chicken taco salad. WHERES THE LETTUCE?! So bland. Are they trying to trick these poor white people into thinking this is flavor? This is the worst Mexican food I have ever tasted. And I am from Mexico! The star goes out to the fast delivery people!

Let me start by saying this is a "5 star" dive Mexican restaurant, and as much as it hurts I can only give 4 because they charge for EXTRA CHIPS!!!!! I MEAN COME ON,,, CHIPS! But read on, everything else is awesome. Since you asked, here's my take on NYC Mexican... overpriced and average at best! But luckily there is Sabor a Mexico. I would like to say I am a Mexican connoisseur living the first part of my life in California and the last 8 years in Texas I have had my fair share of Mexican dishes. First the prices here are good, and for me this is a very important part of the experience because lets face it, mexican does not cost the most to make. I am a huge fan of NYC's "fine dinning Mexican" i.e. Rosa Mexicano, Maz, etc... but I dont always want to spend 20 bucks on enchiladas! Second the food is great! By far the closest I have found to authentic Mex. In fact, this is authentic Mex. Family owned and from Acapulco. Like some of the other reviews the mole sauce is amazing. I had it on the pork tamale as an appetizer and it was fabulous. This too me is a true sign of good Mexican as anybody can make a cheese quesadilla but mole is tough! I also recommend the pollo enchiladas with the verde sauce. Great flavor and the right amount of spice... I hope this review helps, if youre in the neighborhood and looking for a good dive mexican spot where the price is right give it a shot. They also have 2 other locations...on 75ish and 2nd and in the West Village if that is more convenient for you.

Dear owner/manager lady, Why were you so rude to me? I asked how big your half pint of sangria was. You ignored my question and asked for ID. You then made me wait for 10 minutes for my sangria even though everyone else had their drinks. After you took the guacamole from the table, you took away my untouched silverware and didn't bring me a new set. When you brought the entrées, you were so busy snapping at me about the enchiladas that you didn't hear my date say 3 times that they were hers. Did I steal your man? Or are you upset that your food is just ok, not particularly good and nothing worth coming back for. Perhaps it's that in your tiny, squished establishment the only thing worth ordering is the damned sangria? Just wondering... Sincerely, Ava R.

I've been in the neighborhood almost 4 years and can't believe I've waited this long to check out this little gem. Simple, quaint and tasty. Just went here for brunch and was very satisfied with thw experience. The menu is limited, about 8-9 offerings which come with a juice or mimosa. I had the huevos a la mexicana which was served with fresh, warm tortillas and hit the spot. Portion sizes are reasonable and for $12 I'd say totally worth it. Only I wish the guac was freshly made as well. I loved that the place is not pretentious at all and embraces it's little hole in the wall status. Will be back again whenever I feel like a cheap and easy brunch.

I had no problems with service. I did have to ask a couple times for some things, but even when my tacos came from kitchen in the wrong shells, the situation was quickly and pleasantly corrected. To me, good service is how you fix a problem when it happens. On to the food. This place is inexpensive, and getting a seat to dine-in is never a problem. They seem to do a l lot of take-out. Sometimes its really nice to just dine without feeling like your on the 6 train at rush hour. The Chile Rellenos was simply divine. It was spicy, but not insanely hot for no reason. The sauce was excellent and the entire dish was full of flavor. The tacos were ok. I would get the softshell. This isn't the most "authentic" Mexican experience in town. But if you are close, it is convenient, inexpensive, and easy to get into. The guacamole was very fresh, although it could have been spicier. It seemed made to order, so this probably varies a little bit. This is the perfect comfort meal when you want to just grab (or take out) something and not be in a crowded, high-pressure environment. Nothing pretentious, just good food at a great price.
