The Saddest Restaurant Closures to Know in San Diego, September 2025 | Eater San Diego

"Temporarily closed for remodeling and a menu revamp, this first brick-and-mortar for the farmers’ market favorite had been serving earthy peanut stews and fiery piri-piri chicken; the owner says, "We need to remodel and simplify the menu so we give the community what they want to eat," and is focusing on hot chicken sandwiches and grilled piri piri chicken while continuing to serve Mozambique dishes like chicken peanut curry and broccoli sweet potato curry at local markets, with plans to reopen in early November." - Helen I. Hwang

Sabor Piri-Piri was some of the best unique ethnic food (Mozambique/African) food I've had! We first had them by ordering online and having them delivered. We got their sweet potato and also their chicken peanut curry. We really liked the food, so we then went physically to check out more menu items. We ended up having the red chicken curry made with their (slightly spicy) Piri-Piri sauce! And omg that was amazing! Apparently Piri-Piri is a spicy pepper from Africa, so it had a unique flavor I never had in San Diego. Their kale and black eyed peas was made with the same sauce so it gave it that nice slightly sweet and spicy flavor. I honestly didn't have high hopes but it ended up being one of my favorite items! The staff was welcoming and really nice. They answered my questions as I was unsure and new to Mozambique curry. The shop is really small but has decent seating inside as well as a nice spot outside to eat. There's Tahona next door (great to grab to go margaritas), so it's nice to grab a few different items with friends and enjoy the spread outside with a Marg! There's still more on the menu we haven't tried, so we want to go again!

I really like Sabor Piri Piri from eating it at the farmers market. The restaurant didn’t disappoint. We are outside. I didn’t take a picture of my food from the beginning but I made up by taking pics of the menu. The chicken samosas are delicious!

Sabor Piri Piri is the place to go for some delicious food! We had Eva cater samosas for our staff and those Samosas flew off the tray. The sweet and spicy sauce was amazing, everyone kept raving about it! The sauce paired perfectly with the chicken and vegan samosas. We loved hearing all about how she learned to make samosas. She was so sweet and knowledgeable about her craft. Can’t wait to try more of her delicious food!

I love this place. All the food is awesome. I especially love the samosas, peanut curry and the piri piri chicken. Also great vegetarian options. Authentic Mozambique cooking. I've been a long time customer at their farmers market booths and could not be happier to see them grow into a storefront. Great addition to National City. Take home some of their hot sauce 💯.

HIGHLY recommend! Not only are the owners incredibly welcoming and on point, but the food itself is top notch “imma keep eating even though I full” quality, both their vegetarian and meat centered dishes. And the story behind the menu is beautiful too. If you like great food with good vibes, don’t miss out on this gem next time you’re in or near National City area!

The staff at this restaurant are very polite. The service is extremely fast and the food is outstanding. One of my go to dishes is the sweet potatoes and Broccoli with a side of veggie samosas.
