11 Essential Halal Restaurants Around D.C. | Eater DC

"The biblical-sounding name is jarring. But with reasonable prices, speedy service, and late hours, Sacrificial Lamb is a great takeout option. And 100 percent of its dishes are halal. Delivery is free after ordering $18 of food." - Lenore Adkins

Google
Really disappointed with the aloo parantha. The bread was half-cooked and way too thick, with barely any filling—almost like eating plain dough. It had no flavor and was honestly unpleasant. The only saving grace was the yogurt, which was decent. Overall, I’d rate the parantha 0/10. Would not recommend at all.

Google
Hole in the wall place with great Pakistani/Indian food. Lamb vindaloo ($18) knocked the jocks off me, very spicy and flavorful. Curries come with rice which is nice.

Christine Carroll

Google
Ate here twice while staying in DC. The guy recognised us from a few nights before and commented that they must be doing something right. The place isn't huge or geared toward families, but the food more than makes up for that. The portions are huge and we had to ask for takeaway boxes. If we ever come back, this'll be the first place we head to.

Jinhee Park

Google
Had the lamb korma and I would go back. Plenty of meat and it comes with rice, naan is was a bit too bready/flour-y for me but great for soaking up the curry. Would’ve preferred some vegetables like carrots too

Christiane Alvarez

Google
This place is delicious and affordable. Everybody who works there is kind and considerate. They easily adjust their spice level to your liking, and they give very large serving sizes, especially for the biryani. Full send - I love this place dearly, and it is my go-to local spot.

Google
I ordered the Butter Chicken and Lamb Curry off Uber Eats. It was some of the best Indian Food I’ve ever had, even being delivery ! I can only imagine how fantastic the food taste in person at the restaurant. This will definitely be my go to for the time-being. I’ll be checking their restaurant out in person ASAP. Highly recommended.

Google
Consistently delicious Indian & Pakistani food. Some of the best in DC.

Google
I will say the workers are really nice. I want to lead with that because nice workers can make or break a business. However, the food was bland, underwhelming. The store inside was a “interesting” and while there’s outdoor seating, it’s at the bottom of the staircase and is not the greatest (to me). I wish the establishment nothing but the best, but I don’t believe I will be returning or even ordering take out.

Yelp
Wow, been a long time since I wrote a review. This place deserves some praise. It is a tiny restaurant that requires you to walk down some steps to enter. There are some tables, but this is mostly a to-go spot. The owner told me as much and said 95% of their orders are for takeout. You can eat there, but don't expect spectacular ambiance. There isn't much parking, I double parked on the two occasions I picked up. The food is amazing. I have had my fair share of Indian food in my life, and this ranks up there. I feel like chicken Tikka masala is a good measuring stick, and this was excellent. Sauce had spice and depth to it, even the texture was nice and thick yet smooth, with tender chunks of chicken. All the dishes we got were great. My cousin got a vegetarian dish that she loved, I forget the name. Butter chicken was on point. The second time around I got the Chicken Kali Mirch. Excellently seasoned sauce with tons of flavor and spice. Once again big pieces of perfectly cooked chicken. Their rice is not dry and the Naan is fluffy. My mom got some lamb kabob, nice pieces of meat. And the samosas were on point too. Prices are perfectly reasonable. Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
My sister-in-law wanted to take us here because she knows the owner. It's a hole-in-the-wall place where you just order. Since we were visiting, they put a couple tables together, so that we could dine there. I ordered a mango lassi and we all shared some naan, rice, tikki masala, and butter chicken. We had a few more dishes, but I don't remember what that name was. Hubby also ordered some kind of kabob, but it wasn't like the photo. Overall, the food was tasty and delicious. Prices were very reasonable as well.

Yelp
This is my go to Indian takeout spot! The food is very reasonably priced especially considering the huge portions they give. When in doubt, get the chicken biryani. Love love love the biryani! If I'm feeling extra hungry, I also get chicken vindaloo or chicken tikka masala with naan. The spice level of the vindaloo is perfect. The staff are really nice too and sometimes give me free naan. The place is pretty small but there are tables if you want to eat in the store.

Yelp
Saw this place was nearby while on my travels, and decided to drop in and have a bite. It is very hole-in-the-wall esque, with limited cramped seating inside, but it's chill. The staff are friendly and we got our food fairly quick. My boyfriend got the butter chicken while I had the malai kofta, we also had some naan on the side. We forgot to add a spice level, so he gave us a little green sauce that was supposed to help, which was a nice little topping, but I think the food was enjoyable without spice so I wasn't fussed. The butter chicken was tender and the sauce, while different than what I'm used to, was super good and flavorful as well. As for the malai kofta, it was great as well. Tender, flavorful, definitely my new favorite thing. The naan was average, I enjoyed the cheese filled one best. While it also wasn't too big of portions, it felt like just the right amount by the end of the meal, and I even took some leftovers. It was tummy upsetting, but I'd eat here again if I could, definitely recommend!

Yelp
Friendly service.....open late.....delicious food. And the neighborhood is fairly safe.

Yelp
I'd give them 5 stars just for the name. Honestly, I are here a while back and remember enjoying it. Some of the meat was a little tough but the chickpeas were especially good. Still tempted to give 5 stars for the name.

Yelp
This is one of my go-to takeout spots. Each time, I get the biryani (chicken or lamb). I believe it's one of the best values in the area. There's heaping amounts in the box and it's consistently flavorful. It's usually enough for two or almost three meals for me! I have yet to try much of the rest of the menu. I got a curry dish once, but I always prefer the biryani over anything else. I call ahead of time to pick up my order and they always have it ready in about 15 minutes. +1 for fast pickup! FYI very little seating inside.
google avatar

Justin N.

Yelp
I like Sacrificial Lamb! It's super convenient for me to grab takeout, doesn't break the bank, and the food is good! I call 15 minutes before I want my order and it's ready when I get there. I also like that they have late hours-- great for night owls like me. My go-to dishes are the Lamb Biryani and the Chicken Korma Kashmiri. The Lamb Biryani is a big portion for the price and has a lot of flavor.
google avatar

Yelp
pretty good dal and baingan bharta! lots of oil on top, and the baingan bharta had larger chunks of onions than i like, but it hit the spot on a cold day when i couldn't cook, so i enjoyed it.

Jose S.

Yelp
9PM - walked in and ordered chicken vindaloo with chawal and Peshawari naan. 9:15 PM - walked out completely satisfied. The spicy savory sauce with the sweet Peshawari naan was the perfect combination. Very authentic!

Yelp
First things first the food was delicious. Out of everything I ordered my samosas were my least favorite item. The chicken tikka was soft and flavorful and cooked well. Basmati rice - tender. The naan was fresh and warm. The packaging is where things fall apart. Sauce everywhere and soaking through everything. Stained towels now fill my hamper. Maybe a more secure system should be implemented?

Mike L.

Yelp
I order delivery from them often and it's always good quality and good value. Tonight, I wanted extra spicy vindaloo and asked them to make it spicy enough for me to cry. To their credit they followed through with an incredibly spicy (and tasty) dish. Gotta appreciate when a restaurant actually listens to your request and it still tastes great. Highly recommend

Yelp
Thought this would be a quick in and out order, and we ordered 20 minutes ahead of time, and when I got there to pick it up, they hadn't even started the order even though I arrived at the specified pickup time. That being said we ordered 2 kabobs, the chicken/lamb and the fish kabob. The fish kabob was a grilled salmon, which was pretty good taste wise, but it was pretty dry. The chicken and lamb were also pretty dry, but drenched in sauce it was pretty good. The naan bread was soggy. I was hoping for more crunch especially since they advertise as the best naan in the DMV. The chick pea soup was delicious though!! Good for something quick in the area, but I'd avoid the kabobs, I would try the currys next time.

Morgan T.

Yelp
Good stuff. Butter chicken was good and the curry was good too. Staff was also nice. Would recommend
google avatar

Christine L.

Yelp
The food is excellent. There is not much space to eat inside and it was too cold to eat outside, but the food was fast and really good. I got the paneer makhani (aka butter paneer) off of the vegetarian menu and my husband got the lamb rogan josh. We split some garlic naan and had mango lassis. I absolutely demolished my curry. The plate was a little weird (pic) and the space a little cramped, but the food was so gooooood. I'd recommend ordering to go. At least one food app person came when we were there. There's a cute outside area but too cold for now.

Rebecca D.

Yelp
Ingredients were fresh and some of it was very tasty. The Chicken Tikka Masalla tasted more like tomato soup sauce though. Trying to find my go to Indian place in the area, and this one wasn't quite up to par for me.
google avatar

Teresa B.

Yelp
There used to be a place in Queens, Ny where I used to get my Kashmiri chicken. The owners made their millions and probably went back to Indian leaving me curled up in a corner sobbing. Kashmir chicken is harder to find than a good man in Canada. Alas Sacrificial Lamb. I didn't have to travel so far. It's closer to home and it great. Quiet and delicious.
google avatar

Rohan N.

Yelp
I had the tandoori chicken and naan to go and was somewhat satisfied with the meal. There were 4 pieces of chicken in total; I would've been satisfied with a couple more. The chicken itself wasn't too dry but it wasn't particularly moist either. The highlights from the meal were the naan, which was decent, and the channa/chickpeas, which were really well spiced. I would come back here in a pinch but feel like there should be more chicken in a serving. Also keep in mind that the restaurant only takes cash, so make sure to have that if you visit.

Yelp
I've had a lot of great Indian food in the US and abroad. I'm usually licking up the plate and wishing I ordered more. Unfortunately, the food I had here was average and I did not finish everything. I ordered the lamb biryani, tandoori bread, and aloo paratha for delivery. The container smelled great. The biryani portions were generous. However, the flavors were average. The rice was mushy and uninspiring, as were the breads.

Yelp
We got delivery from Sacrificial Lamb and were both happy with our food. I really like that they offer a vegetarian platter where you can choose two different dishes to try. I also appreciated the small amount of Chana masala that came with the samosas. My novratan korma was tasty, as was the palak paneer. The peshwari naan was enjoyable, and the garlic naan stood out to us as being pretty dang good. My fiancé enjoyed his butter chicken too. We'd order from here again, for sure.
google avatar

Nupur C.

Yelp
The food was great for the price! There was a lot of it and it arrived way quicker than I thought it would. We had a wonderful time eating our biryani at school it gave the same vibes as being at home again.
google avatar

Jessie D.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing again! Ordered the other week, the tikka masala was a bit different than I'm used to but I loved it! Got the butter chicken this time and it is so dang flavorful and delicious. If you're wondering how the naan is, I ordered three today after realizing two wasn't enough the last time ;) Prices are so, so reasonable and affordable, and my delivery came in less than a half hour! Thank y'all so much :)
google avatar

Tarak D.

Yelp
Food: carry out Indian and Pakistani cuisine Service: quick Atmosphere: it's carry out for a reason Price: $$ I ordered fish curry and a mixed kabob plate. The fish Curry was delicious and I enjoyed every last bite. The Kabobs were pretty dry and I don't think I'd get them again. I'll stick with the Curries and naan and stay away from the rest.

Emily N.

Yelp
This is my favorite Indian restaurant in DC to get takeout from. They have the best chicken tikka masala
google avatar

Jo-Ellen G.

Yelp
Food was amazing and the people were great! Samosas were amazing. It's just no no nonsense amazing food. Would recommend!
google avatar

Catherine X.

Yelp
I ordered the butter chicken here, garlic naan, and the lamb biryani. The butter chicken and garlic naan were alright. The lamb biryani was undoubtedly my favorite. With the price too, the dish is a steal!

Melissa M.

Yelp
This has the best Indian food in the city. It's our go-to delivery. They add extra spice upon request, and our order is always plentiful & fantastic. It's a gem!

Yelp
Excellent lamb curry . Also some other dishes. Saag paneer is good too. Service is very prompt Location is very central .
google avatar

Carlita B.

Yelp
The food is here super flavorful! Indian and Pakistani cuisine is served. The restaurant itself is small but the meals have great portions! Would definitely recommend to anyone that likes spicy food. The employees are also very nice and make great small talk. If I wasn't leaving DC soon, I'd come back again!
google avatar

Schala B.

Yelp
Ordered through Grubhub and it was super quick and came piping hot. The curry goat was delicious! Enough for two meals for me. The garlic naan was pretty good. However, while the dough was great, the garlic was baked inside rather than on top. That would have been good but the garlic was a little too sweet for my taste. I ordered a side of chickpeas but wouldn't order them again. They were just a little under seasoned. All in all, was a great order and would definitely order them again.
google avatar

Rumit P.

Yelp
I ordered food for delivery. I ordered aloo paratha and raita as an appetizer, chicken kabob as my entree, and a mango lassi as my beverage. The chicken kabob entree had four large pieces of well-marinated, well-seasoned, juicy, and very flavorful fresh chicken breast. The green chutney was not sufficient so I borrowed from the raita to avoid such a dry meal. The entree did come with a few spoonfuls of chana masala chickpeas, which tasted great; a plain naan, which was a good portion size and also tasted very good; and a small salad without any salad dressing. The salad was still good! The aloo paratha tasted appetizing and was filling. The raita was a huge portion size; I admittedly drank the rest when I had leftover. The mango lassi was sweet and tasty! Didn't taste like the can variety, but it also didn't taste like it came from fresh mangoes. Momma makes lassi with fresh mangoes and that has a unique taste and texture. Real mango lassi isn't supposed to be smooth and puréed but still it tasted great! Everything was well packaged and nothing spilled over. I did not get any napkins or plastic ware in the bag, but I had those items in my office. Just an FYI for prospective diners. I spent $25 including a 15% tip; there was no delivery fee. Give it a go!

Yelp
Placed an order over the phone for a chicken/lamb Kabab combo with a naan ($17+). Both the boneless chicken and the boneless lamb kabob were exceptionally dry. In fact, the two kababs tasted old as if they had been sitting out and were quickly placed on the grill to just warm up and be served. I always look for the good in every place, however this shop was a true disappointment. I will definitely not return and I'm saddened that I didn't spend my hard earned money somewhere else.

Deepesh C.

Yelp
Unhygienic and terrible vegetarian options. Service is also a bit unpredictable. I'd not recommend eating in the restaurant.

Shawn H.

Yelp
pretty good food honestly great service aswell def recommend for everyone who loves desi food
google avatar

Rana A.

Yelp
My go-to desi food! Everything I've ordered is delicious at an affordable price. Portions are large and ordering is easy. Order directly from their site for even lower prices

Quinn C.

Yelp
Fast, cheap, delicious. They also offer free delivery for orders over $20. No reason not to eat here
google avatar

Victoria K.

Yelp
We've been doing delivery from this place for the last 6 years. Love, love them! Especially the chicken - spicy, herby, soft, lots of flavors and good sized portions. Thanks a lot guys, please keep this up!

Jaime O.

Yelp
I've come here almost weekly for years and the food has always been really good and the people who work there are extremely nice. I love the spicy lamb Briyani in particular. It's a great portion size for the price and really quick service.
google avatar

Caity T.

Yelp
This is why you venture into hole-in-the-wall places. Coworkers and I tried Sacrificial Lamb for lunch and were pleased. Paneer makhani was creamy and flavorful. It had that perfect sweet and savory balance. I was informed by my coworkers that the curry chicken was also good.Everything was served with hot naan, which was nice. Interior-wise... that's a weak point. There are technically several tables but they're crammed together so tightly that I'm not sure how you could have people sitting at all the available seats at the same time. Bathroom is not the greatest. So I think I'd opt for takeout next time. That way I can take delicious food and head somewhere nice with it!
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
My first time eating here, I noticed a hole in the wall boasting the "best naan in DC." Intrigued, I went in and was amazed by the delicious smell as soon as I entered. I ended up getting chicken biryani and it was delicious. They have a regular and spicy version, and the regular was seasoned to perfection. The rice and vegetables tasted fresh and delicious and was the perfect lunch option at a very reasonable price. Would eat here again! Also has some outdoor seating.
google avatar

Maddy R.

Yelp
Had ordered a delivery through Grubhub. Delivery and service was ok. Samosa plate was very good. 4 stars for Paneer makhani & malai kofta. Matar paneer & mixed veggie was meh! Not bad for a late night craving for Indian food.

Elon M.

Yelp
Prett meh food. got the tikka masala which had the smallest chunks of chicken I've ever seen. The palak paneer was bland we had to doctor it ourselves. And the naan was actually deplorable the garlic inside was unbelievably sour. The only good thing I can say about the food was how cheap it was. We got two meals, a mango lassi, two garlic naan, and a drink for only $35.

Raven D.

Yelp
I have ordered the same thing all three times: fisk tikki masala (the sauce is divine), naan and the veggie combo. Really like this place especially the fish--so very delicious. Can't speak to service as I have ordered delivery every time
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
This restaurant had been a weekly go to until they gave my order to the wrong delivery person and would not make good on their mistake. They were horrible and yelled at us on the phone when we called to sort out the issue. I am happy to take our business elsewhere.
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
What a disappointment. I ordered from Sacrificial Lamb through Eat24. The food was barely warm. It's 4 minutes by car or 3 minutes by bike from the restaurant to the hotel I was at. I really like Indian Butter Chicken but not from this restaurant. The Butter Chicken from Sacrificial Lamb had no taste to it. It looked the right color, I don't know where the flavor was hiding. The texture was right for chicken but it was horribly bland. I ordered Garlic Naan and Kashmiri Naan, both room temperature and lacking taste. The real insult was the $2.95 Rass Malai. I thought it was a small cup with some type of condiments at first. It was a portion for a Hobbit with a gastric bypass, it was gone in two wanting bites. I wouldn't recommend eating at this restaurant. This is probably my most negative review on Yelp.
google avatar

Camsie M.

Yelp
We order delivery from sacrificial lamb almost once a week. Our slightly picky 2-year old is obsessed with their special biryani - a mix of chicken and goat and lamb. Spicy rice is a huge hit! We've tried almost every lamb and chicken dish - they are all amazing. My personal favorite is the lamb bhuna punjabi. So so yummy. I never have photos bc we always just go crazy and devour everything! Highly recommended for super tasty Indian food delivery :)
google avatar

Foodie M.

Yelp
Really good and fresh food, Yogurt chicken is my favorite!!! Daily special!!! Well reccomend!!
google avatar

Dumebi U.

Yelp
Authentic food. The garlic nan is a must. I had it with the goat meat curry. Goat meat was tender & tasteful (as it should be). 5 out of 5 would recommend
google avatar

Alexi S.

Yelp
This is real, authentic Indian food, and downright delicious. At every Indian restaurant I visit, I always try some variation of the lamb. So this time I ordered the Lamb Roganjosh. This is a nice sauce with added tomatoes, so a little different of a sauce than vindaloo. The meat was quality and didn't taste too animal-y, which can happen some places. A couple reasons I docked the star: The portions were soooo small, I was still hungry after I ate. One entree is not enough if you are really hungry. My girlfriend got the mixed vegetables, which she loved, but we always ask for spicy for her dish and no place ever does it! None of this is really make or break however. Take note that this is virtually not a sit-down establishment, there is maybe one table inside. Although it is in a very cute area of Dupont. I will definitely be back here.
