The standards for a grocery store are very low. How can a chain store make buying stuff and leaving into a punishing, 1-star experience?
I'm short: Terrible layout/bottlenecks for shopping & checkout, pointless frustrating procedures, mistreated staff, high prices and increasingly lower quality. Read the many 1 star reviews that confirm it as the most hated grocery store in our area.
The most unique aspect of shopping here is also their most terrible part of shopping here- Anti-theft measures that don't work and make staff + customers miserable.
If you're like most shoppers and want to grab basic necessities, toiletries, and/or alcohol. You have to go to a small corner of the store that's blocked off and has only two checkout counters. It's an absolute mess in this nook. You WILL get stuck in here when they're busy; gridlocked & blocking others from entering, shopping, and/or leaving. Now, they've recently added signage stating they're checking receipts at the exit and suitcases are banned (but backpacks are fine, somehow?). Just another layer of time-wasting, ineffective security.
Let's be real- How would this stop someone from stealing, walking past security (who can't get physically involved) and doing it again tomorrow? Of course it doesn't, lol. If you come here often, you'll see it happen.
This is the only grocery store I've ever seen employ this combination of ineffective "Anti-theft" measures. Of course they're only doing this at the store in an area full of minorities and this does not feel like coincidence. Why? You'll never see this behavior in a "wealthy" neighborhood and you/we shouldn't tolerate it, either. Even the Target downtown doesn't do this, and y'all know they have a legit problem with theft.
From a financial perspective - Safeway mgnt has told me they're having a serious problem with shoplifting... but how significant is a problem if your company is hitting record profits? Why not use some of that "doing the best we ever have" money to hire a cop to sit outside, like Costco and other high volume businesses do? Obvious solutions exist, but they cost money, and greed doesn't like spending money.
Lots of words to say it doesn't make sense to come here or support this mess. QFC is right up the street and closer to the train/bus station, anyway.
