Best Indian Restaurants in Austin | Eater Austin

"More Indian and Nepalese specialties — plus some Indo-Chinese takes — can be found at this Northwest Hills restaurant, which continues to be a favorite amongst Austinites. Its namesake spice, saffron, shows up in the goat curry, scallops, chicken lazeez, and in the mixed tandoori grill. The rest of the menu is spared the seasoning, but it is still plenty spiced and flavorful. Grab a table inside under the impressive mural of Hindu gods or order a taste of saffron to your home to go or delivered by Uber Eats and Doordash." - Deven Wilson

I've been to this restaurant three times and I cannot stop ordering the saag lamb!! It is delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant. I'm sure someday I'll start trying to butter chicken and other famous and wonderful Indian food but now I'm very partial to this dish! And there's always plenty for another meal

Google
Had a great experience at Saffron! We tried a wide variety of dishes — panipuri, pakoda, kurkure bhindi, veg chowmein, chicken drumstick, veg and chicken biryani, and chicken thalis. Overall, the food was flavorful and satisfying. The biryani was a bit too oily for our taste, but everything else was delicious, especially the kurkure bhindi and the masala chai — the chai was a real standout! Even though we arrived close to their afternoon closing time, the staff was incredibly kind and accommodating. The service was warm, and the washrooms were clean and well-maintained. Definitely a good spot for flavorful Indian food with great hospitality!

Google
This place is amazing, the food always delivers, but it’s the service that makes a difference. If you’re lucky to have Bose as your server, he’ll make your experience unique. Please tell him about your like and dislikes and he’ll make the experience unique to you. I can’t wait always to come back!

Google
The food and service here is great! The staff were very attentive and helpful! They have clearly marked vegetarian/vegan options. The Samosas were very good! We all got mocktails! They were so good!

Google
Without a doubt not only the best Himalayan Indian and Nepalese food in Austin, but also the best overall Indian food in Austin! I’ve been to Nepal and their food is legit! The best Indian food south of Toronto in North America. Get the Samosas, but also get the Saffron Chicken Lazeez! It is to die for! My wife is a vegetarian and loves the Channa Masala.

Zhanna Makiievska

Google
A great place for lunch or dinner! The food was delicious, especially Butter Chicken, I also loved the rose lassy! The food was served fast, the waiters were super friendly! Will definitely visit again! By the way, they also have plenty of vegetarian options!

Google
The food was wonderful! Our server, Ashish, was very kind and attentive. Will definitely be back!

I visited Saffron in Austin, TX, last week during a trip, and overall, the food was quite good. I ordered the Lamb Curry, which many restaurants struggle to get right, but Saffron nailed it. The lamb was perfectly cooked, and the masala and spices were well-balanced. The Butter Chicken was also tasty, and the Mango Lassi, while a bit overly sweet, was made with good quality mango pulp, though it wasn’t fresh mango. One thing to note is that the menu is a bit overpriced for what you get. The young women serving us, who seemed like international students, were sweet and attentive. However, an older server or possibly the manager started closing up near our table and was speaking loudly with colleagues, which felt unprofessional and made the experience less enjoyable. As for the interior, the atmosphere wasn’t very comfortable. Given the prices they charge, I would expect a more refined and welcoming ambiance. In conclusion, while the food is worth trying, they could improve the overall dining experience to match the upscale pricing.

Yelp
We have been going to Saffron for years now. We often get Saffron to go on Friday nights and do our weekly "Friday & a Movie" at home. When we order, they already know what we're going to order. The lamb rogen Josh is awesome. The lamb is always tender and the flavor of the sauce is unforgettably delicious. Also, you can choose your level of spice. They have some great appetizers too! Both of their locations are equally good.

Yelp
I love the food. We got some dishes for take out. They were all yummy. My favorite was the Kurkuri Bhindi okra appetizer. It tasted sooo delicious. I bet it is even more scrumptious when they are eaten right after they are prepared. I also loved the taste of their Chicken 65. I don't mind if they would make it a little spicier. My husband ordered the Chicken Tandori and Channa Masala. He really liked the Channa, he said the chickpeas still have a little crunch to it, which gives the dish a little more contrasting textures. Love the dishes. We will be coming back.

Yelp
The food was great. The lunch special was a large portion, and everything was very tasty. I am not an Indian cuisine eater... this was me giving it its second chance, and I was impressed and will be back. Only reason for the 4 stars was pricing. I'm still adjusting to Austin.

Yelp
I don't normally eat Indian food, so I can't speak to how authentic Saffron is. However, it seems to have a lot of fans--just look at the number of highly rated reviews! I did get a reservation for a Friday night, but I doubt you need one. It was relatively empty even during peak dinner hours. Staff is SO nice and friendly. My friends and I ordered the momos, garlic naan, tikki masala, and one other eggplant entree that I can't remember the name of. The momos were really good--skin was really silky and thin. I'm not a huge fan of coconut, but even the sauce was yummy. My friends really loved the momos. The chicken tikki masala is really creamy, and I thoroughly enjoyed it with basmati rice. I like that it's more tomato-based than cream-based. I am normally a huge garlic naan fan, but I wish they had added more garlic and butter to the naan. Regardless, texture of the naan was awesome and I think I ate an entire portion by myself. My friend's potato eggplant entree dish was so delicious. My friends really enjoyed it and thought it was the star of the show. I would definitely come again! A great experience with my friends.

Jim F.

Yelp
Phenomenal food. But ever since it opened I cannot recall the name, and I have a huge quantity of friends who agree. I just spent 25 minutes trying to find the name. I have frequently booked luncheon meetings elsewhere after being unable to recall the name of the place.

Yelp
I ordered ubereats from have cause it had pretty good reviews and it was so yummy! The nan was perfectly soft and chewy while the goat curry might be my new favorite Indian dish! I also tried the chicken momo for the first time and it was also delicious! I will definitely be ordering again for my next Indian fix.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this cute fusion Indian style restaurant. I didn't eat at the establishment but instead, ordered a to-go. Because they make everything from scratch, I expect about a 20-30 minute wait. I ordered a customized order. Spicy, Vegetable Tikka Masala, rice, garlic naan and samosas! Their samosas are about the size of a size medium hand, full of flavor, potatoes, peas, and other veggies stuffed inside of a fried wrap! But the real star of the show was their vegetable tikka masala. I got them to make it spicy and it was the right thing to do. It was so incredibly creamy, filled to the brim with fresh vegetables, all of the spices that you can expect in a traditional masala dish! It was hot and tasted perfect with the freshly fire baked garlic naan!! omg! I'll be returning soon! They can count on that!

Yelp
Qualifier: I don't have a lot of experience with Indian food beyond our local ISKCON Temple (definitely worth a visit, and the delicious prasad/lunch afterwards IS amazing) BUT this spot is an absolute treasure, especially if you're a curry-lover. Niraj recommended the bone-in Saffron Goat Curry. I was in a mood so I jumped on it, extra spicy - the fatty goat and delicate rice balances all the fire. It's aromatic, elegant, savory, exciting, better the next day. If you have more respect for your tastebuds, medium or hot may yield more of the ginger, garlic, and aromatic curry flavors. Goat is like a delicate pot roast, oh-so-tender, not gamey at all, an absolute delight. Samosas are good too, sure to find more to love.

Yelp
Don't sleep on this place! Amazing food and service. Got their lunch special which came with Chicken Tikka Masala and 2 sides and a dessert. Everything was wonderful and expertly prepared. Sometimes, I prefer Nepalese style curry when I don't want too much spice. Another must try is their Chai tea - not too spiced and just right.
google avatar

Yelp
It's fascinating to me that this is a repeat now that I'm back in Austin after a seven-year absence. Joined by a friend, we did dinner with generous portions and attentive service. We had plenty to take home. Not a fan of overly spicy food, I would check on the next visit to make sure I don't get a whole entree of something I really can eat. The preparation, however, is still very interesting and authentic.

Yelp
One of the few restaurants offering Nepali fare in Austin. Go here if you want to satisfy your momo-cravings. Not the best for authentic Indian food but then again, not a lot of places in Austin are. Things I would order here are -- saag paneer, pakoras and the Mango lassi that totally hits the spot!

Yelp
This was my first visit to Saffron. It's a Nepalese Indian fusion restaurant , so I knew it's gonna be good. There is ample parking space and it was a easy walk in on a weekend for lunch. We didn't have to wait in line. The ambience is very nice and restaurant looked very clean. The hostess was very kind as well.. gave us enough information to make the right calls on the dishes we wanted to try out. I decided to go for a Thali to get to taste a bit of everything. My chicken tikka masala thai came with 2 vegetarian dishes (Bhindi and dal), papad, tandoori roti, rice and gulab jamun. My husband decided to get chicken biryani. All of the food was so delicious. We were very happy with the quality, taste and spice level. I am excited to come back again to try out Nepalese momos. The price is reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. Definitely coming back for more!
google avatar

Martin K.

Yelp
Food was excellent the naan, vindaloo, tandoori chicken. The baigan bhartha stole the show though! The restaurant has nice furniture and decorations. The staff were helpful and polite.

Yelp
I had some time to kill before a late appointment, so I decided to grab dinner in Northwest Austin. This place popped up nearby with great reviews. At around 545 on a Thursday night, I was the only table. But I noticed that they were doing a bustling to go business as well. I probably saw eight orders pop up just in the time I was there. My waitress later told me that the storefront has only been reopened for a month, so that makes sense that the word isn't an out yet that they have dine in. For a strip center off of Far West Boulevard, this place has a fantastic ambience. I love the mural, the lighting, the tables, the incense. I'm obsessed with brussels sprouts so I ordered those with a mango lassi. Both were absolutely perfect. I was so excited to try Nepalese food, but I literally chickened out and got the chicken tikka masala. And I think I made a great decision, this was the best I've ever had. Even better than my now second favorite Indian restaurant. The naan was crispy and also soft. Sooooooo good.

Averi M.

Yelp
The food was incredible. We tried so many of their dishes and every one of them was delicious. Their Naan bread is by the best I have ever had. We had onion, jalapeno and garlic Naan. Their menu is impressive. I have a few suggestions. For example, their beer was warm. I didn't have any but my husband and another member of our party did and asked the next beer be placed on ice. The staff was very friendly and the restaurant was nicely laid out.
google avatar

Manpreet M.

Yelp
Always best. I got catering done recently for a house party - food was AMAZING. Ordered Koftas, tandoori chicken , kalonji paneer- Raj was very helpful from helping in order to the delivery.
google avatar

Ed S.

Yelp
Hmmm. Disappointed. Made a reservation which they forgot, which shouldn't have mattered as 1/3 of the tables were empty...on a Friday eve no less. Then we sat 10 minutes before we could order. That said, had a Nepalese lamb dish - overcooked so had to cut lamb pieces rather small to chew. Also had a goat dish - better but a bit bland. Naan was good. Raita was like water. Sorry, but there are several other, better places in Austin.
google avatar

Ashley A.

Yelp
Hands-down the best Indian food I've had in Austin and I lived in Dubai for 5 years. Mild Mattar paneer was perfectly creamy and not too tomatoey with a nice undertone of heat. Super authentic. Rice really makes the dishes shine, it's not overly salty or al dente. Loved the samosas and particularly the sauce. The filling is not too mashed up and fresher than most Indian fare in Austin. My server was very attentive and gracious and I visited on Diwali. I'll return to try other dishes, I'm excited about the Nepali menu as well. Very nice to see a lot of native Indians visiting, that's how I know it's good.
google avatar

Dana S.

Yelp
We were so impressed with the food at this restaurant! It's so hard to describe it's a sort of fusion. I guess it would call it. But the flavors and the textures and the combinations are just wonderfully delicious! I have not had one thing there that I did not like. You might try the Momos. They are dumpling type appetizers that are truly delicious!
google avatar

A W.

Yelp
I always come back to Saffron. I LOVE IT. Flavors are good. The paneer tikka masala, lamb rogan josh and paneer chili NEVER disappoint. Garlic naan was a tad doughy today but I'll let it slide! Already thinking about going back.
google avatar

Patricia B.

Yelp
Great samosas and saag paneer. The rice is spectacular. I wish I could recommend other dishes, but the samosas and saag are so good. Perhaps if I lived closer but my favorites are my favorites.

S F.

Yelp
I ubered some butter chicken tonight and it was great! It's my favorite Indian dish and I don't always love the way places make it but I definitely love it from here. The garlic naan was also yummy. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Cherokee W.

Yelp
Yooooo this might be my new favorite spot to grab Indian cuisine! I'm a sucker for the clay pit but Saffron's chicken tikka masala just hits different. On top of the amazing creamy like savory flavor of their chicken tikka masala - they also have the nerve to serve rosemary cheese naan! Ask for garlic on it as well and thank me later! The combination of the two - whew! Again, order it and let me know! I thoroughly enjoyed this establishment and CAN NOT wait to go back. I see it becoming a fav in my future! Ambiance and decor is beautifully themed for the space that it occupies. I found the artwork of one of the Indian gods on the wall extremely tantalizing. If if we're a larger location, I'd imagine it'd be extremely themed and beautiful!
google avatar

Gabriel T.

Yelp
Have been eating Saffron regularly for years and they are always good. Portions are huge and ingredients fresh. It's all delicious
google avatar

Ann S.

Yelp
Stupendous Indian food!!! Best I've ever had. I had Dal Ghost, subtly layered seasoning, very tender goat meat, just amazing. My companion had Tikka Masala which was so very rich and complex that I could've eaten hers too. Definitely the best I've ever had! We had Saffron na'an which was simply out of this world, especially with the sauce from the excellent app Saffron scallops. Garlic banana was also exceptional; both very clearly housemade to order. Mango Lassi was wonderful. Rice pudding was truly exceptional. Portion size just right; with apps and na'an we had leftovers. Heat was American medium; when we ordered medium we didn't know if Indian or American heat scale. Prices reflected the extremely high quality but I felt they were reasonable. Absolutely only (minor) issue that language was occasionally difficult. Go there already, you'll thank me!!!
google avatar

Pamela M.

Yelp
Delicious food with fresh ingredients with just the right amount of spice. Friendly staff, very nice atmosphere.
google avatar

brenton m.

Yelp
Fantastic! We ordered the chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, chicken momos and plain naan. Everything was just so good. I think we found our go to Indian spot!
google avatar

Talha K.

Yelp
A little pricey but the chicken curry is really really good :) Service is great too!!!
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
Postmates sent me a $20 credit so thought I'd try something new. I love Indian food and have a couple go tos by my house but this is probably my new favorite. I got the chicken korma and chicken tikka masala and they're both great. The only tip I'll say is I ordered both mild bc you never know how hot Indian food is going to be. They both aren't spicy (which is correct in my opinion when you order mild) so next time I'd go for medium. Really great though, highly recommend.
google avatar

Cece R.

Yelp
Everything was great. Food was really delicious. Rich deep unique flavors and not overly greasy. Everything made with care. The staff is very attentive and so pleasant, so cheerful. I normally make my own Indian food at home but Saffron is as good as what I make.
google avatar

Marsha H.

Yelp
We waited so long to make a reservation for Mothers Day that Saffron was one of the few choices available, and I'm so glad. The food was delicious. Saag paneer was best I've ever had. I love the tandoori chicken: perfect flavor and very tender. My husband had the lamb vindaloo, spicy but not overpowering. Also recommend the samosas. The restaurant is clean and not too noisy, and while the decor is fairly plain, the ambiance was nice.

Harini K.

Yelp
We ordered takeout from this restaurant a couple of times and it has become one of our favorites for North Indian food. Everything we ordered was great (Paneer Tikka, Malai Kofta, Palak Paneer, Naans, Veg Biryani) and it reminded us of the succulent North Indian food you get at restaurants back in India. This will remain on our list for future orders.
google avatar

James Z.

Yelp
THE BEST Indian restaurant in Austin! Service was fast and the staff were incredibly friendly! The samosas were good, and the saag paneer was some of the best I've ever had!

Madeleine M.

Yelp
This is the best Indian food I've ever had in Austin. Their lunches are a good deal for a lot of food, and the quality is impeccable. Love this place!
google avatar

Gihani D.

Yelp
We called in the order, worked great. Food was ready in 20 minutes. We got chicken tikka masala, mango lassi, saag paneer, coconut shrimp curry, garlic naan and saffron naan, and gulab jamun. All of the curries came with basmati rice too. It was way too much food for 3 people but we loved it! The chicken tikka masala was the best curry and the magi lassi was amazing. The gulab jamun was really good too! So fresh that the lady brought out a container that was too hot to hold. The naan was great too. The other curries were good but not as much of a standout. All the curries were sealed really well too. Nothing leaked in my car which was super appreciated. I will say the online ordering is a little confusing. There are two ordering options on their mobile website with seemingly different items on the menu and one didn't have descriptions so we just called it in. Next time we want to try the Nepalese food!
google avatar

Gilbert P.

Yelp
The Indian food here is really delicious. That lamb saag is definitely my favorite! The chow mein was good but didn't stand out. I was a little taken back from them charging me for water without them letting me know first. Other than that, I would say it was a four star experience.
google avatar

Christopher C.

Yelp
Ok so this is my 2nd review of Saffron... the 1st time was out of this world good. This time, the food was so bland, the quality severely was suffering, and it tasty very "fast foody" and "cheap". The chicken was super dry and overcooked and the lamb had NO seasoning... oh and it was cold. I don't know what changed in the past few months but it's no longer my "go-to" Indian spot. Friday night should be your A-Game and A-Team, it was clearly the Z-Team. Time to find another place...
google avatar

Kathy M.

Yelp
Lastnights take out effort from Saffron had to be the worst choice i made all day. I took about two bites of the dry, flavorless, mushy, bland food and threw it promptly in the garbage. The naan was as thick and boring as texas toast. There was NO sauce in my entree. It was potato and eggplant that was sadly under seasoned. My veggie fritters were greasy and dull. The rice was extra dry and tasted day old. I was actually really questioning my dietary habits after that bad take out and will have cereal next time rather than eat there ever again. To be fair, vegan friends warned me about this place. I was hungry and made a mistake. Perhaps their meat entrees are better?...but considering a lot of vegetarians eat this type of food they should get it right.
google avatar

Clau B.

Yelp
We came here based on a recommendation from our Pre-marital Counselors.... After seeing the reviews, I was delighted to give this place a try! I was soooo disappointed. We ordered the chicken tikka masala as I usually do at every Indian Restaurant. The tikka masala was not seasoned to perfection. It lacked a lot of flavor. I'm used to the masala hitting my mouth and causing an explosion because of all the spices. I was so sad that I didn't get that same feeling when taking this first mouth full. This place is BYOB which is so cool and the first time I've ever heard of.... You can bring whatever liquor/wine/beer you want as they don't serve any alcohol. Their samosa was dry but the green sauce was super yummy, as it always is, it's my favorite sauce! They have a lunch buffet every day and it's only about $12 a person. We came for dinner tho so weren't able to take advantage of that. Overall, this place is decent, I won't say I'll never be back. HOWEVER, it is not the best in Austin and it isn't fancy.... so give it a try but don't have high expectations and you'll be fine!
google avatar

VH M.

Yelp
So you want to enjoy Indian food with friends. Some of you like the Indian spices and taste. While others are dipping their toes in that "hot" water. What to do? Where to go? Easy answer - Saffron!! The food can be tailored ... cooked ... to your taste without making it something other than Indian food. The staff is warm and welcoming. My favorite is the Goat Biryani. Now enough reading ... go eat
google avatar

Alejandro R.

Yelp
The samosa Chat was absolutely on point. Btw friends... They close at 9, at least on Saturdays, when I went.
google avatar

Jade H.

Yelp
I thought this Indian food was very good. It tasted fresh and was well spiced. Portions were good.
google avatar

Rolando N.

Yelp
Simple and delicious Indian/Nepalese food. I really enjoyed the food at this place. It wasn't the best I've ever had but it was quite good and well prepared. A good variety of options and it's BYOB. Bring you're own wine, awesome! Gobi Manchurian- battered cauliflower with a spicy sweet manchurian sauce. Very tasty with just the right level of hotness. A little heavy in the batter. Samosa Chat - Excellent. This was the best dish of the night. Perfectly cooked chickpeas and samosa bursting with flavor. Chicken Momo - Nepalese dish which was perfect. Absolutely loved the dumplings. Cooked just right with just lite wonton skin. The accompanying mustard sauce was excellent. The vegetable momo was equally good. Dal Makhani - very well prepared lentils. Flavor was delicious with the butter and cream. The Nan- not my favorite. It's a little thick. My preference is for making it as thin as possible so it doesn't dominate the food. Service was exceptional. Quick refills on drinks, food was brought promptly. Very friendly.
google avatar

Candice C.

Yelp
Everyone in our party of seven loved their food. The portion sizes were good, the garlic naan was fantastic and our server was great. This is our new favorite place for Indian food.
google avatar

Zach D.

Yelp
This food will change you. For the better. I was in the application process for a new mortgage and BAM! Approved 5 minutes after finishing chicken lazeez. Coincidence? I think not. A few weeks later I was helping my nephew study for a math test...which was not going well until the little guy put away half a baigan bhartha. Now he's an engineer for a little startup called Tesla. In all seriousness, they run a good business. Best Indian food in town. Not one wrong order all pandemic. We go there on average once a week (don't judge!).
google avatar

Samantha L.

Yelp
Delicious! Some of the best saag I've ever had. Loved the vegetable pakora too. We were very pleasantly surprised in the best way!
google avatar

Sabrina I.

Yelp
This place is really good. Lots of options on the menu, including Nepalese food. The pakoras, chana masala, aloo gobi and garlic naan were delicious. Service was prompt and friendly. We'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Gaurav K.

Yelp
We usually go eat at the biderman's deli in the next door shopping center. This time when we came they were out of lot of food options. So we decided to give saffron a try. We got there around 2pm right before the were closing. They let us in. Restaurant looked very clean and staff seemed very friendly. Definitely a step up from a usual Indian restaurant. We asked for were momo's but they didn't have any. Actually they said it would take a while to cook momos and they were closing. So we ordered regular entrees including some okra appetizer. Definitely a unique kind of okra I ever had. More like a hay stack fried okra. It's was fine though. Little bit on tangy side but still good. For main course we ordered baigan bharta, classic chicken curry and some goat dish. Baigan bharta was amazing with smoky flavor. Goat meat was equally good. Only complain on chicken was, it said chicken would come o the bone. But when we got the dish it was boneless pieces which were a bit on hard side. Never the less food was simple just like home cooked with just enough spices. Will come back and try different entrees another time

L H.

Yelp
Excellent food, great service. We had lunch today and ordered the mushroom curry and kofta along with naan and kulcha. My favorite Indian/Nepalese restaurant in Austin!
