Unorthodox Spices Meet Chocolate and Pastries at Intrigue’s New Capitol Hill Cafe - Eater Seattle

"Located between the newspaper stand and the fish throwers, Saffron Spice is ensuring Indian aromas waft through Pike Place Market alongside the many other tempting smells. The restaurant promises “usual favorites” like chana masala and chicken tikka masala, plus a rotating cast of daily specials reflecting the cuisine of India’s diverse regions. Status: Certified open." - Megan Hill

Solid Samosas. Tried every one they had, must get the spicy green sauce too. Tad pricey but the food is delicious.

Tucked away inside the food court on the left when entering Pike Place Market (by the fish market), Saffron Spice is my Samosa spot in Seattle on every visit! Staff is friendly and courteous always, the food is delicious and I could not recommend this place more. Give them a try!

Here are a few things I noticed that might be worth mentioning: 1. The pricing seems a bit deceptive. They list one thing and charge a different amount. They also add a 10% credit card fee without telling you. When I asked about it, they showed a tiny text hidden under boxes that said it was disclosed. The receipt itself is a joke, doesn’t itemize the taxes, food price or the “credit card fee”. 2. The environment could be cleaner. The workers didn’t wear gloves, and they served frozen food by just reheating it. I saw a container that was microwaved and then dipped into another bigger one. 3. The food is overpriced for the quality and taste, but the quantity is way too much for one meal. It ends up being a waste.

My husband and I live in Alaska but pass through Seattle pretty often. Every time we do, we grab a few veggie samosas from here. The beef and chicken are OK, but the veggie ones hit the spot for us. Over the last 5-6 years we've always had such a great experience, and the people working are nice normally. There were a few times we encountered a woman who didn't have the greatest attitude but when she's not there everyone is super nice haha.

Google
Super friendly service, and their samosas are delicious! Very different than your typical samosa. The dough is fluffier and the mint chutney is creamy like an aioli. I'm a big fan.

Google
Definitely not $1 - $10 More like $25 if you have a drink I was charged 19.98 without a drink and without naan. Just butter chicken and rice. It did taste nice though.

Google
Best easy lunch for local office workers. Excellent flavors, great serving size for the plate/bowl(based on my perspective as 6ft person) and quick to boot. This is a staple and if I could I'd eat from here once a week. It's about sixteenish bucks per plate after taxes(I drink water I bring no drink purchase) which is a great deal considering you're in Pike Place Market right smack dab in downtown Seattle.

"L$20 for butter chicken and chickpea curry? Not worth it - the butter chicken had hardly any chicken in it!ripoff street food

Yelp
I ordered two samosas for $6, one was chicken and the other was vegetarian. Both samosas were fried well and had similar flavor profiles. I just wish they added spice to the filling, not in terms of heat but in terms of flavoring. What helped with the flavors of the samosas was the chutney and tamarind sauces that were served. Next time I come to Pike Place, I'd love to try their assortment of curries, which might convince me to give this place a higher rating.

Yelp
Don't think it tasted 100% authentic but they were delicious, warm, spiced in a cozy way, and a great contained mess to dip into the sauces as we waited in line for coffee afterwards

Stefanie R.

Yelp
Been coming to this food stand since me and my boyfriend first relocated to Seattle in June 1st 2023 (maybe 3 times in total) The prices are always reasonable, and the food is good. The spice is however on the milder side, but if you request it, they'll add some extra chili oil to your dish. A good spot for when you're low on funds and looking for some comfort grub

Yelp
This little food stall in the Pike Place Market serves a small variety of traditional South Asian dishes and snacks. They food smelled amazing and the service was quick. I grabbed a few samosas for a quick snack while roaming the market. They were generous with the sauce and chutney. 10/10 would recommend.

Yelp
The portion sizes here are really great for the price! I loved the lamb - super tender, and the butter chicken was very flavorful. My favorite part was the samosas, as they were super crispy on the outside and the filling was delicious. A great place to grab lunch at Pike's Place!
google avatar

Yelp
Fresh crispy veggie samosas. The spicy and sweet sauces made the meal complete. Cute stall, attentive staff. Nice quick spot to grab a bite!

Yelp
We stopped here on a food tour and were blown away at how great the samosa was. I'd never had one and now I'm online seeing if they have one back home. The 2 sauces it came with were phenomenal- a green cilantro creamy sauce and the tamarind sauce. I asked and they don't sell the sauces there but wow were they delicious- next stop we made today.

Yelp
There are a lot of good places in Pike Place. I would say in my opinion the beef and chicken samosas here are easily one of the best things in the market. Easliy is a top contender with spicy sauce. This stall alone is worth the trip. Add this to the must try. You can not pass this up.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious samosas. Fast service. Very affordable quick bite while you explore. Bar stool seating.

Yelp
Ommmmgggggg their samosas are the best ones I have ever tried! They are massive and DELICIOUS!!!! For $3! What a steal. I got their veggie samosa which has potatoes and chickpeas. I also got their beef one which had peas, beef and onions. They are crispy and full of flavor! It comes with this semi spicy creamy sauce. The samosa alone is great but with that green sauce it makes it 100xs even better! I instantly took a bite with out sauce and loved it but then when I added sauce.. omg. If you are coming to pikes place this is a MUST!!! It's on the left hallway from the main entrance.

Yelp
I have eaten at Saffron Spice a number of times and have always been pleased with the aromatic flavors. Today I decided to have the Mumbai spice wrap and I have to say it was even more incredible than the platter! I loved it! The reason I am knocking out one star is that they charge an extra 10% if you pay via credit card. A bit of nickel and diming in my opinion since the food isn't exactly cheap. So make sure you carry cash if you decide to stop by.

Yelp
I ordered a Lamb Kebab for lunch on Saturday. It was $8 and worth it. The lamb was well marinated and all the spices were good. I wanted to order the samosas but it was $4.95 that was steep for me. The lamb was awesome though.

Yelp
MUST TRY THEIR SAMOSAS! I can't speak for anything else but their samosas?!?!?!??? BOMB.COM You would wonder if it's still crunchy since it's been sitting in the warmer, but I'm telling you, it's voodoo magic in there cause it was so crunchy and flaky. The meat was seasoned to perfection, and that green sauce was crack. One of pike's must-tries.

Nooman L.

Yelp
This place is a rip off. I just ordered the chicken rice dish (the one that comes with the chicken in the creamy orange colored sauce). The amount of chicken they give in the dish is minuscule. What they do instead is give you massive amounts of rice, the green colored watery dish and salad to weigh down your container and make you think you are getting a lot of food. I am a local and am looking for places to eat during work hours and can tell you I won't be coming to this place again.

Isanegod5554 G.

Yelp
Some of the best food I have ever eaten. Wow, the food here sure packs a flavorful punch! Service was good. Highly recommend the kebabs and naan.

Yelp
You're hungry and you're walking around Pike's Place overwhelmed with where to eat. Go here!! This is my go-to everytime I'm in the area and they do not disappoint! Saffron Spice is located next to Daily Dozen doughnuts. There is a small seating area between the donut counter and Saffron Spice. I get a few samosas with their yogurt sauce and the kind of spicy sauce and am HAPPY! We like the chicken and beef samosas equally. The samosas are crisp and warm and ready for dipping in that delicious sauce! You can also get wraps, they're very filling. I've seen the food truck around Seattle but have never tried that option. The menu at Pike's Place is limited in comparison. Give them a shot before spending way too much elsewhere in Seattle.

Yelp
Service was nice! Friendly staff a little hard to hear with the background noise though. Tried the beef & chicken samosas.... So flakey and stuffed with meaty goodness the sauces provided were yummy but i would ask for 5 of the coriander chutney. Garlic naan was garlicy i wish i had gotten curry to go with it.
google avatar

Yelp
We stopped here while walking through Pike Place Market because it smelled soooo delicious. Hubby wanted to try the chicken samosas (they had them and prepared and displayed in a warming case). We ordered one and split it. They asked what sauce we wanted but we didn't really know so they gave us a little of each which was awesome. We liked the spicy one the best! This was fast, convenient, easy to eat while walking and affordable. Definitely recommend if you are in the market - but heads up, probably best to order 2 per person to be more filling.

Yelp
Dear lord, this was the worst Indian food I've ever had - and I grew up eating Indian food in Oklahoma. Bland as f*** and overpriced. I would rather have frozen Indian food from Trader Joe's. Trust me, it's better. For $20 I got baby food spinach purée and a piece of flatbread with rice. Lesson learned. DO NOT EAT AT THIS FOOD TRUCK IN SLU. Anything would be better.
google avatar

Smrithi S.

Yelp
Ordered lamb Kathi rolls for lunch through Peach. I was excited since they marked it spicy. You get 2 kathi rolls with 2 dipping sauces. The rolls tastes okay, but they were not spicy. I would classify the spice level as less than medium. The dipping sauces were good.

Yelp
INCREDIBLE samosas. Very flavorful; the chicken is perfectly cooked and flavored well, and the veggie (potatoes and peas) is incredible as well. Sauces were out of this world. I was in the mood for a snack and not a whole meal so I ordered two samosas (one chicken one veggie) They were so dang good that I went back for two more. Definitely a must try. I will be back. Too bad I didn't have these two days earlier otherwise I would have been here every day.

Yelp
Wandered around Pike Place market and found this little stand selling a few different Indian lunch combinations. For around $11 I ordered saffron rice, chicken tikka marsala, and dal (lentils). I wanted to really enjoy this as I love Indian food but I was sad to find all of the entrees were super bland and lackluster. The chicken tikka had no chunks of chicken and the sauce just tasted like tomato sauce. The lentils, while better than the chicken weren't spiced and almost just tasted like a ladle of lentil soup. I have yet to find another Indian restaurant in Pike Place but doubt I'd buy another meal here.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm addicted to their samosas. This is a small stand located in Pike's Market near the donut booth. Parking can be found in the surrounding lots. Unfortunately the service can be hit or miss, but fortunately their samosas are tasty each and every single time. They offer beef, chicken and veggie, but I've found the beef the tastiest with their tamarind sauce and their mint. They have other items too, but I have yet to try any of them.
google avatar

Mandee O.

Yelp
Stop here 1-2x a month for lunch for a Combo 2 (one veggie one meat). I have only tried the Chicken Tikka and Saag Paneer but they are both consistently delicious. Rice always is perfectly cooked and flavorful. The green chutney is a must on the side if they offer it! They also make fresh samosas, juices and smoothies, I have yet to try myself but hear great things. If you find yourself in the Market I would definitely recommend stopping by here for a quick bite!
google avatar

Liliana M.

Yelp
The samosas hit the spot. The spice served with them was great! Washed it down with a refreshing fruit juice.

Sabrina L.

Yelp
Really rude customer service. Wanted to give them business as they seemed like the only stall without a big line. Happily went next door to the Italian store instead.

Yelp
I'm no expert Indian food critic, but it was ok. I only came because it was the first thing I saw when I got out of that Amazon sphere. I went to the truck and I think during lunch rushes, they just prepare everything and keep it heated because my food was ready instantly, but it was lukewarm. My box of food just really looked like a bunch of stuff came out of the blender, there's not much flavor, but it did filled me up for lunch given that it was a generous portion that you can choose 2 meat/veggie entree on top of rice and a salad. Tell me about your experience if you've been here or is going to after reading this review:)

Yelp
Came here for the first time for lunch because I was craving something spicy and was in the Market. It took the three employees working there nearly 5 minutes to see me standing there. There were no other customers present so that probably was a bad sign. I proceeded to order a two curry plate with salad. Not all of the curries were labeled but all looked pretty good. I paid for my order with a credit card which was surcharged $0.50 and proceeded to take the lunch back to my desk to eat. The flavor of the curries and the salad dressing was actually pretty good. The chicken masala was very flavorful and had a nice thick curry. The meatball curry was super buttery which was both tasty and slightly unappetizing. Neither had any spice whatsoever. I think the only thing that was really off putting was the salad. It was iceberg lettuce and really brown. It definitely wasn't the spring greens that I have seen in most everyone else's photos. Why would any restaurant in Seattle serve iceberg lettuce, and if you are in the Market it better be fresh. That's the main reason that I docked two stars. That and the service wasn't that friendly. May or may not go back.

Yelp
I've probably said this before, but I get Indian food everywhere I go and pit them against one another. A small food stand like this would not be my go-to, but Pike Place is not very conducive to vegetarianism without being pastries. There are a couple of combos to chose from at around $9. I got the veggie one, obviously. Several options to choose from including a generic veggie curry, saag paneer and chickpeas. I got the latter two. It was served over a huuuuuuge bed basmati and a side of onions and peppers. I opted out of the salad. It was average. On par with what you would expect from an express food joint. I wish they severed naan instead of rice, but I didn't see that as an option. The flavors were good, but not enough spice. Will definitely please the masses. Friend got a smoothie and said it was delish, though.

Maddie E.

Yelp
best samosas in seattle!! guys who run the stand are super nice as well and will give recommendations.
google avatar

Alyssa W.

Yelp
We had the meat samosa and the veggie samosa. They were both quite good. BUT the veggie had a better flavor. And the texture was better to me. The meat samosa had almost to much meat and not enough veggies.
google avatar

Swati A.

Yelp
Quick option but food was ok. Ambience n seating - this is a food truck so no specific ambience. Like most food trucks, no tables/seats that are put up, it's purely a order and take away place. Food - Tried their Vegetarian rice bowl. It includes 2 side of veggies, basmati rice and salad. The veggies I took were Chana masala (garbanzo beans) and saag paneer (spinach & cottage cheese). The food tasted ok. Not too bad but nothing great about it either. They have daily specials, like in vegetarian today they had veg korma and yellow dal as well. Their chai was pretty good. Price - pretty reasonable for the quantity of food. Post taxes it was $8.81 for the vegetarian rice bowl. Quantity - decent portion size for one. Service - they were very quick. I had to wait only a few mins after placing my order. Overall - If you're in the area and the line is not too long, it might be a quick option. I wouldn't recommend it if your motive is to try 'good' Indian food. Another thing to keep in mind is that they change locations and the line can get pretty long during lunch time.

Yelp
Tried Saffron Spice again for a quick lunch, decided to get the combo #2 that comes with a choice of 1 meat option and 1 non-meat option accompanied with saffron rice and a salad. I decided to get the chicken tikka masala as my meat option and curry veg as my non-meat option. Pretty decent lunch when you are craving a curry for about $8 and you are at Pike Place. Didn't realize there's a little seating area next to their food stall, a few stools and a ledge to eat off. Anyways, pretty solid lunch option at a good value.
google avatar

Chahinez T.

Yelp
I got two beef samosas here. Unfortunately, we got here a bit late so that's all they had. I would've loved to get a chicken and a beef one but next time I guess! The flavor of the samosa itself was good but the crust was very soggy! I would've expected some crunch to it but I am guessing that if you take it home and toast it for a bit it'll be as good as new. I completely and utterly fell in love with the spices of the beef samosa though!!
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
Order: Chicken Tikka Masala w/ Chick Peas, Salad, and Naan The food was fresh and edible, the portions were sizable, fairly priced, and the service was quick despite the large influx of customers during the lunch rush. However, that about surmises the entirety of my positive experience, which concluded with my first bite. When you can't tell the tikka masala from the salad dressing you know something's wrong. Typically, Indian cuisine carries with it an expectation of strong, well-rounded flavoring. This was not the case with Saffron Spice. The spicing, ironically, was the weakest point of the dish as I struggled to differentiate one bland flavor from another. The only unique flavor was the naan, baked with enough butter to make the doughboy himself raise questions. Yes, the dish was edible, but just so. So unlike the doughboy I have no questions; I will be eating elsewhere during my lunch break.
google avatar

Harsh C.

Yelp
I would highly discourage anyone going there. The manager is overtly friendly, trying too hard to build a customer relationship, often times going overboard with comments like "I should give you more food so you can put some weight on" or "oh you don't want rice, are you dieting?". Food- * almost always the saag paneer has no paneer in it. * found a jean button in my curry once. Abandoned the place for a month * Tried again after a month, the naan was raw. absolutely worst food in terms of quality.

Yelp
Hubs and I decided to past time while waiting for our dinner reservation, so we decided to walk around Pike Place. To quench the thirst (cos the thirst was real. Jk), we found some bomb lemonade from this food stand that also sells samosas. DELICIOUS SAMOSAS!!! It's a fried dish with savoury yummy goodness!!! It's kind of like an upgraded version of an empanada. More tasty! I've lived in Washington for 12 years now & I cannot believe this is only my first time trying it. If you're in the area give it a shot!!

Yelp
It was mid-afternoon and some of the food stalls had stopped serving food. Fortunately Saffron Space was open. I didn't want too much because I was having dinner in a couple of hours. Got a veggie samosa that came with a couple of dips. Delicious and warm, just right for a cold, rainy afternoon.

Michelle M.

Yelp
The samosas were good and meaty. The combo plate was good as well. Good prices . Under twenty dollars for a hearty and good tasting meal.

Yelp
This food truck used to be great, but the food has taken a dramatic turn for the worse over the last six months or so. First, they used to actually be spicy - like give-me-hiccups spicy! Now it is just bland. I thought maybe it was just an off day, but I have been back 4-5 times and they have permanently turned down the spice level on their beef kofta, saag paneer, and all their chicken dishes. Maybe they got a new cook or they were responding to customer demand, but now the food truck offerings are just insipid. Second, their tikka masala and other chicken dishes were made from shredded chicken that had been slow cooked until it was falling apart. Again in the last few months the food truck converted to using chunks of chicken breast, and these things are hard as rocks. It's like eating styrofoam. Really inedible. Wouldn't be so bad if the sauce were any good, but even that sucks because it is so bland. Seriously can't understand any recent positive review.

Anand B.

Yelp
I got the Delhi combo. The Chana tasted like left over from 2 days ago. Lamb seemed to be cheap minced kind. Rice was good. Quantity was good. They charge 10% more for CC purchases. The drinks and samosa were expensive.
google avatar

Maggie C.

Yelp
Ordered chicken tikka masala from food truck and the chicken was not fully cooked... this is the second time I had not fully cooked chicken from the truck. I got food poisoning the first time because I didn't realized it until I almost finished the food. This is a serious food safety concern.

Yelp
We were walking around the market and I was craving fresh juice and I remembered seeing these guys from the day before so I dec'd to give 'em a try. I knew that I wanted beet juice but didn't know what complimented that and couldn't find any fresh juices on the menu so I asked if they would make it and their answer "We can make anything you want"-- GREAT ANSWER! They made a beet, apple and orange juice for me. The ONLY bad thing that I could say about it is that it was NOT cold and if you've ever had beet juice warm, it's quite EWWWWW. I asked for some ice but since the glass was full, there was barely any room for them to put ice so I was in a lose-lose situation and just tried to drink it as fast as I could before it got warm. Though tasty, enjoying it at this point was not possible. Next time, I'll try to bring my own glass or something bc that warm juice situation was NOT the business. The Gist: Great option for fresh juices but please use ice for crying outloud!!!

Yelp
LOVE Saffron Spice, all of the people who work here are so incredibly nice and the food is delicious for a fair price! If you go try a smoothie, they're super fresh and delicious!!
google avatar

Tom B.

Yelp
This is a review for the food truck. They have a nice rice bowl setup where you get scoops of a couple different entrees for a few bucks. You also get nice clean saffron rice and some diced vegetables, along with a complimentary drink. The roast eggplant was a little on the gooey side, even for eggplant. But the lamb was nicely flavored and fairly juicy, with no undue gaminess or anything like that. Service was nice, and they take credit cards, though with no tip line.

Yelp
Indian food at the Market! Amidst the flying fish, and various asian-ish places smattering Pike place, this Indian place stands out. They have three kinds of Samosas, veggie, beef and chicken (went with beef) The meals are either in wrapped form or served on rice (plain or saffron). I went with the non-vege meal with chicken tikka masala and creamy spinach. This came with a tiny salad and saffron rice. The beef samosa was decent for being kept in warmer. The chicken tikka was okay. Small portion but yummy over the rice. The creamy spinach I gander was some kind of ode to palak paneer or something but less flavorful and without the paneer. Total damage was less than ten bucks which was okay for what you got. Not a bad option for a grazing oppurtunity while down at the market!

Yelp
First things first: 'love the chai! It's small (easy to carry and fast to enjoy), inexpensive and very pleasantly mild. Ye-ah! One smooth strolling lunch I went here for some good stuff. I was in a wait, briefly, so I looked over the menu fairly good. With trying to keep material waste low that day, I decided to go for an M-something (or so I thought?) Chicken Wrap. It's kind of hard to understand them over the Market ambient noise but she asked if I wanted everything. You pick the optionals, she mixes them up in a bowl, plops it on a spread out whole wheat wrap and gracefully rolls 'er up into the wrap. It looked like a big burrito but I found it best to fork it back at the office and then eat the wrap sort of last. AND, of course, dat chai, yo!

Yelp
This is for the Food Truck establishment.I based my review purely on the food and speed since you don't really get service in a truck. The staff is friendly and very apologetic when they ran out of somethings. Even with a long line they were able to quickly pump out orders. The flavors in the Tikka Marsala wasn't the best i've had. It was very oily, over salted, and wasn't as creamy as i'm use too. It wasn't horrible nor was it great. The Lamb Kabob with mint Chutney was delicious. I haven't had it before so i don't have anything to compare. I will point out it was ground loose meat and not a "kabob". The naan isn't anything special. Felt like warmed softer version of pita bread. It wasn't thin, bubbly, and light like most naan I've had. The rice was also kind of oily and undercooked. Overall the food is more than filling and is satisfying but it nothing to rave about. It a great value for Indian food, 8 dollar for 2 choice of sides, rice, and small salad and add naan for a dollar. I would come again if this truck came to my work place.

Yelp
Grabbed lunch here yesterday. The line was long but moved super quick. You should probably go early because they sell out of stuff by 1pm. I got the non-veg rice bowl combo. The chicken tikka masala was actually really good. It was better than most other places and wasn't just colored cream. Good flavor and juicy chicken. The dal makhani was below average and unimpressive. The rice and salad are nothing to write home about. The samosas are not bad when they are hot and fresh. Overall good value for money. If you get the right dishes in your combo you're good. Will stop by here again sometime.
