"Saffy’s in East Hollywood can be a tricky reservation on the weekends, but you can always opt for brunch next door. The East Hollywood kebab house has a casual café that, starting at 9am, offers a $24 Arabic breakfast set. The spread comes with a skillet of shakshuka and toasted challah with clotted cream, or you can keep things simpler with housemade yogurt sweetened with honey and a few feta-stuffed bourekas with coffee. "I visited the coffee shop they opened next door on July 14 at 4845 Fountain Avenue; it offers a selection of whole loaves of bread, pastries, cookies, tea, and coffee brewed with beans from Silver Lake–based Cafecito Organico and served as cortados, lattes, and cold brew. A rotating selection of Menashe’s breads includes whole wheat challah and sourdough buckwheat sesame, while Gergis’s pastries rotate daily and might include blueberry coffee cake with streusel topping, boysenberry cheese danishes, and bourekas. Other options include yogurt with Lebanese pine nuts, Bill’s Bees honey, and nigella seeds, and buttermilk biscuits that can be topped with cultured salted butter and housemade jam or with ham, cheese, and mustard aioli.
