This Vegan Restaurant Is Facing Enormous Backlash For Embracing Meat | Bon Appétit

"Mollie Engelhart, owner of Sage Vegan Bistro, a Los Angeles staple known for its plant-based menu, calls herself a “card-carrying” vegetarian of 46 years. That’s why many were shocked when she announced on April 22 that her three restaurants, with locations in Pasadena, Echo Park, and a to-go window in Culver City, would be adding meat and dairy products to what was once an entirely vegan menu." - BySam Stone

What a delightful experience! From the moment we stepped into this vegan restaurant, we were impressed by its cleanliness and the friendly demeanor of the servers. Our brunch was nothing short of perfection – every dish was a symphony of flavors and textures that left us craving more. From the savory to the sweet, each item surpassed our expectations. Overall, our visit was a wonderful experience, and we left feeling fully satisfied and already planning our next visit. If you're looking for delicious vegan cuisine served with a smile, look no further than this gem of a restaurant!

Google
A nice, happening vegan restaurant. I've gone twice. Each time has been good—plenty of options. A little pricey, but I think justifiable with the portions & atmosphere. The food is good; so far haven't had anything outstanding. I was so happy about the lasagna since I've only had a handful of times since I went vegan. Many drink options, alcoholic & none alcohol. Service has been okay. Restrooms are a little tricky since they don't have their own. It's shared restrooms with the other businesses.

We enjoyed the food here very much and loved walking around town afterward. It’s located in a cute courtyard and our friends were able to bring their fur babies because they had plenty of outdoor seating. Service was great and the gelato looked very legit. They didn’t have the large mounts with nuclear color gelatos- it looked very tasty. There were plenty of vegan options here and healthy choices too with lots of fresh squeezed juices.

Google
Pretty disappointed- this place came highly recommended to me (token vegetarian spot I guess?) but the food was poorly seasoned and I have no idea what this ‘regenerative farming’ marketing Schtick is about because nothing was particularly fresh or made in house. Fried artichokes seemed to be from a can. Ramen was made with store bought fettuccine. Farmhouse ale was so how both flavorless and way too acidic.

Google
The food here is very good. My formerly vegan wife is very pleased to have well sourced meat and dairy options on the menu. Basically, the way my wife usually feels when looking at a menu that has a small vegan section is how I feel here, now that it has a set of meat/dairy options. :) That being said, there are some negatives to address: The tallow fries were soggy (albeit delicious), and some of the menu items from the past are missed. Probably most importantly, the price of the food here is extravagant; understandably so, but extravagant, nonetheless.

Google
We were looking forward to trying this restaurant. My son had been here before and said it was good. We came when my son was in town as a treat. We were very disappointed. They are trying too hard to be like a regular restaurant. There are a lot of deep fried foods on the menu many of them geared to mimic chicken, beef or fish. The food was bland. I was looking for a dish that stood on it's own, not one that was supposed to taste like meat. In addition the service was awful. They only had 2 servers to cover the entire restaurant, which was completely full. The server never came back to our table to check on us to see if we needed anything. It took what seemed like forever to get our check and just as long to pay for our food. Definitely do not recommend this restaurant.

Google
In Pasadena, California, for the day. Tried Sage Plant Based Bistro. The food is off the chain, and the portions are massive. All had great flavors and arrived at the table hot. Just try it. Take your wallet and some cash. Trust me, you're gonna need it. Mac and cheese, califlower wings to start. The wife had a Miso Rainbow bowl, and the adult child had a Brazilian bowl. I tried the Cali avacado Pesto Burger as our main dishes. The dessert was next. We shared a brownie sundae and peanut butter chocolate cake. I topped it off with a hot apple cider to drink. It was all good. Just take a big appetite and enjoy fresh, locally grown food. Watch the video they have playing. Support this restaurant if you can.

We had a brunch time this Sunday and we really enjoyed the savory dishes. We are not used to eat vegan and we were not disappointed. My favorite dish was the 3 wings platter!

Yelp
Met up with a girlfriend for lunch on a Friday afternoon. The restaurant was not very busy and we were seated immediately. I was still waiting for my friend and our server, Urban, was super friendly and accommodating. We ordered the fried artichoke hearts, the carbs asada tacos and the curry. I'm a meat eater and my friend is vegan so this was a great meeting spot to cater to both our diets. Everything was delicious. Urban was nice enough to bring us a bag of ice so my gf could keep her pumped milk cold and we all had a laugh about it. Great atmosphere and great food. The prices are high, but you're paying for the quality of food.

Yelp
I used to enjoy Sage when it was a vegan restaurant. It was a bit bizarre to see the restaurant change so drastically, but I was open minded. Unfortunately, both visits have been MAJOR disappointments. The fries, whether regular or tallow, were completely soggy and had a bitter taste--definitely not what I expected. The potato flautas tasted frostbitten and otherwise flavorless. The lentil dal had ok flavor but was so watery. The bison pizza tasted like cafeteria pizza and had very little bison actually on it. Truthfully, the food is gross here and left my family and I feeling unwell both times we've eaten it since the switch. I do not recommend coming here.

Yelp
Four of us found our way here. 3:of us are vegans (not me). All 3 declared this to be their favorite meal of the trip. They have indoor and outdoor seating. We were out next to the cricket wall. Lol, seriously crickets a plenty. Thankfully they brought us a bottle of cold water, which helped us wait for a while to order. Do not be in a hurry here. Loved their blood orange iced tea. Others loved the lavender lemonade and sunrise smoothie. Child's tofu tacos, tofu banh mi and grain less bowls were all hits. My lemongrass miso ramen was giant. Lots of broccoli and spinach which I love. Broth was so so. And the ramen was just spaghetti with a couple accidental pennes lol. Kids loved their kid's vegan vanilla and chocolate shakes to go. And I bought them each a chocolate donut for breakfast which they said were good but there had better.

Yelp
Wait...you can get your Vegan AND your meaty desires satisfied in one place?? Yes, you can. This formerly Vegan ONLY restaurant has now added meat options. If you're a Vegan or in the Gluten-Free realm, your wants are still more than well-represented here with myriad options. In fact, there are only a smattering of meat-based dishes to choose from but, the ones that they do offer are of very high quality. I get the sense that business matters to them as well. Our fries were a tad on the soggy side. After telling the waiter, he didn't hesitate to put in a new order for us and within minutes our new-and-improved crispy fries, hot outta the kitchen, appeared. The beer array is still robust as is the newly enhanced cocktail and drink-selection menu. What we had: VEGAN BURGER WITH AVOCADO SHREDDED CHICKEN TACOS (x3) FRIES HOPPY JUICY IPA (6.7%)

Yelp
Very nice exterior perfect for a sunny day. The service is mediocre as they seem short staff in front, but they are so friendly once seated. You can tell they are hustling and I really appreciate that given the many customers to staff ratio. Menu extensive and you will be sure to find something to fit your style whether it is American, Asian, Mexican, or fusion. Portions are big, at least for me, and it is good enough to share if you want to make it to dessert round. The noodles were perfectly al dente and spicy if you like kimchi. Noodle bowl has kimchi inside while the eggplant had a spicy sauce. It was salty for my liking but nothing that a bottle of water can't do to help dilute. Restroom btw is tricky. I rather use the restroom outside the restaurant with a different code vs. the one upstairs (2 flights of dark narrow stairs) and that takes you out to another room. It was a horror show for me to go through dungeons just to get to the loo. So beware if you need a restroom break, use the loo outside the restaurant, especially for my ladies rocking the heels.

Yelp
Came here for brunch/lunch on a Saturday with a couple girlfriends - I have never been here before and it was my first time. The service started good, but you can tell our waiter was kind of annoyed with us, but still kept trying to play it off and be nice. We got the cauliflower trio - it was actually really good!! For the main dish I got the breakfast burrito. It could have been so good but it had ZERO flavor. With the amount of things in there you would think you can taste something, but it was so bland. I was so let down - especially with the pricing for this place? Super overpriced for the breakfast burrito. In addition, one of my friends got ranch my the other got pico de gallo. GUESS WHAT??? When the bill came- it was an extra 2 dollars for EACH extra side and it was the smallest cup ever. So just a warning if you wanted extra sauces. I don't think I would want to come back.

Yelp
Some friends and I came here for dinner before a concert and had a good time. From my understanding this restaurant just went though a menu change where they started serving meat. I personally am not vegan, but will eat vegan if need be but it was nice to have other options as well. I started with a mocktail and didn't love the first one I had tried. They were nice enough to take it back and I instead got a lavender lemonade which was delicious. We ordered chips and guac as an appetizer and the guacamole was delicious but the portion was extremely small for the price. For dinner I ordered the burger which was pretty good. Again, it was pretty pricy and none of the entrees came with sides. My husband got bison tacos which he said were good. Overall this was a good experience. I'd definitely come back and try some more of the menu if ever in the area.

Yelp
BOMBEST ORGANIC CUISINE I'VE EVER DEVOURED. this was the What's Possible Burger and I had Tallow fries and it was the best burger/fry combo since White oak Pastures in Georgia keep it up Sage this was the best move for the environment, animals and people.

Yelp
I visited Sage when it was a vegan restaurant and always enjoyed their food. I found it sort of sad that it was often empty, but now with the changes in menu the restaurant is busy. I'm glad they kept a lot of vegan items as I visited for certain things I enjoyed. I'm not vegan but enjoy vegan food and with a wider range menu options, there's something for everyone. I had the chilaquiles which were just okay, I was not fond of cucumbers in my chilaquiles. They went a little too fusion for my taste on this dish. I'll get the sweet potato pancakes next time as I really like them. The service was excellent and quick. They didn't change anything in the restaurant so it is just as spacious as ever.
google avatar

Kelly H.

Yelp
I've been coming to Sage for the last five years and they revamped their menu to a broader audience for both vegetarians and vegans. The pizza options are more limited, with an expansion to more noodles, bowls, cheese platter appetizer and kimchi as a side order. I enjoyed the vegan pizza and garlic fries and burger. The service is great. And ambience is dim lit and more on the quiet side. There's an outdoor patio with dim lights or indoor seating with TV screens. I recommend and will come back again.

Yelp
My friends and I were traveling to Pasadena for a music festival, a friend of a friend is vegan and she suggested this little spot. WOW! The outdoor dining felt very cozy. Even though I'm not vegan (I consider myself a flexitarian), everything was fresh and delicious. SO MANY DELICIOUS FOOD OPTIONS to try! When in Pasadena, I'd go back in a heartbeat. A+
google avatar

Yelp
Vegan food has always been tasty despite the slow service every time. I saw that they started serving animal products and are now even serving baby deer in their dishes... Total shocker and completely disappointed. Won't be coming back.
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
Location is gorgeous and in a fantastic spot. Staff was kind and attentive....but the food wasn't good. I wanted to love it but the flavor was lacking and very off. Kombucha flight was the only enjoyable thing here. Unfortunately with dining out being so expensive I wouldn't come back.

Yelp
Sage Regenerative is doing its best to keep up with the demand by adding meat dishes (and unusual ones at that, bison? Really?), combining fried foods galore, and attempting to 'fuse' dishes in order to please many diverse taste buds. 'Ramen' chicken bone broth bowls were nothing short of just being exhausting to eat. The soup broth was cringe-worthy tangy while diving for 'spaghetti noodles', which have little to no resemblance to real ramen tasting noodles. On a positive note, giving this overall meal its righteous 3 stars, was the generous heaping veggies, that were utterly delicious! In fact, the abundance of freshly tasting corn, spinach, and mushrooms were the hero's that saved this otherwise lackluster ramen bowl. Staff were warm & friendly while checking on us often. Having our own chilled bottled water at our table was a pleasant addition. Hubby and I are planning on giving Sage Regenerative another chance, since they historically have been a vegan & vegetarian staple in our old town Pasadena!

Yelp
Came here for a birthday. Very friendly staff and pretty good service. Cute interior and outdoor seating. I also noticed there was a room available possibly for smaller parties to reserve but confirm! The noodles were alright but super spicy. I was a bit surprised but maybe it's my fault for not reading the menu in detail. The cauliflower appetizer, on the other hand, was DELICIOUS! I'll be back just for the appetizer.. that's how good it was! open to trying their bowls and other menu items!

Yelp
we enjoyed a lovely lunch at sage, both the inside and outside decor are lovely and there's a bar section as well with sports playing, so something for everyone! i would definitely recommend the cauliflower trio as a starter, it's huge and only a little pricier ($3) than getting one of the cauliflower entrees, we loved all the flavors! the eggplant arrabbiata was delicious, the spicy sauce and cashew cheese were definite highlights. Last, we got the brazilian bowl with fried tofu, the plantains were definitely the stars of this dish as the rest felt like a chipotle bowl. overall, delicious vegan options and very attentive service, we will be coming again :)

Yelp
They still kept the cauliflower wings after switching up from being fully vegan but they didn't feel the same. Felt guilty ordering some for my bday but last minute issues left me no choice. A bit soggy and lacked that classic flavor they used to have. They got rid of the white pizza which baffled me because it was among the best in LA. Going to miss this place, already feels like it's gone (the good food for sure is gone). Happy Munchies, aVeganAndHer P.S. Your response was as soggy as my wings.
google avatar

Melissa R.

Yelp
Came prior to the menu change and visited again last night. The first visit when they were fully vegan, we ordered a curry, a salad and dessert. It was an expensive menu but nothing was delicious. Lacked flavor, seasoning, or proper pairings. Wanted to give it a second chance though and went back last night but saw they're not only no longer vegan, but the vibe shifted as well. The staff wasn't excited to be there, children in the patio seating were stomping on grasshoppers laughing at killing them and staff just watched, people weren't finishing their plates, it looked depressing. Walked to True Food Kitchen for dinner instead and had a great experience there.

Yelp
Not sure why the bad eating for this place. It has nice outdoor seating and a lot of organic choices and food from regenerative farm is good for us and the planet. We've eaten here over the years when it's been vegan and we're pleasantly surprised when we went this week and found out it served regenerative meat, eggs, etc. We are always down to support regenerative farms! We had the bison meatballs and added mozzarella, which was fantastic! A2 cheese is from cows that have a different protein in their milk so it is often tolerated by folks who can't tolerate dairy. Cows in Europe tend to be A2 cows. We also had the coconut curry, which was especially great as a leftover the next day and the nachos with A2 cheese, also really good, though I miss the house made pickled cabbage that they used to put on the nachos. Also the carne asada I paid to add was extremely underwhelming. I will add the caveat that if you can eat gluten (we can't), it opens up a whole new world with the menu. Thank you for adding the GF and V to your dishes, it makes dining out so much less stressful for diners and servers and imagine the kitchen as well. There's still a lot of ableism out there about food allergies and some servers can get quite dismissive about it. Having it on the menu takes alleviates that stress so thank you! The food was very good to great, my Mojito was OK (they used to be great here, maybe an off night?), and I'm giving five stars because they are doing the right thing for the planet and for people.
google avatar

Yelp
This used to be my favorite plant-based restaurant in Pasadena, but recent changes have been disappointing. They've introduced animal-based options, including beef and chicken, which goes against what I loved about the place.
google avatar

Aaron L.

Yelp
Went here for date night with the girlfriend. The scenery is beautiful. It is in a courtyard next to the Ipic. We ate outside. Service was faster than expected, especially since they only had 2 servers that night. Unfortunately, the food was underwhelming. It wasn't "bad" persay, I was just expecting or hoping for better. I ordered the noodle bowl, and maybe its my personal palate but it didn't "hit" as the kids say. I am definitely open to coming again and trying the food again, I don't think this experience was a good representation of their potential.

Yelp
My favorite Sage is the Pasadena location. It's airy and welcoming. I'm glad they still have happy hour M-F from 3-6, friendly staff and plenty of seating. I'm all for their new concept, which includes grass fed meat because I am not a vegan. I supported their vegan restaurant because the food was excellent. I'm glad all my favorites are still on the menu (buffalo cauliflower, vegan nachos, cheesecake, etc) They did it well and during the pandemic I ordered their vegetable box weekly because I believed in them. Yesterday we tried the Oaxacan Flautas and the Ren Nachos with carne asada. We also ordered a Strawberry Blonde and a Boozy Booche (my favorite). The drinks make me look forward to happy hour. The food we tried was expensive and not that great at lunch. The grass fed beef was unseasoned and reminded me of public school cafeteria food. It was flat out gross. The A2 cheese wasn't really there at all which is confusing because we ordered nachos which means cheese sauce not cheese sprinkles. It was a lot of money for what we got. Will I go again? Yes more than likely for Happy hour and I will only order from their original menu. But this new stuff needs a lot of work.

Jessica G.

Yelp
Food menu is disappointing. The server was rude and careless. The ambiance is not what it used to be. They just lost four regulars. The place is not even vegan anymore. The prices are ridiculous. It lost class, elegance, and what made it special.
google avatar

JJ C.

Yelp
Went here for dinner tonight. Let me just say first off, the vibes are immaculate. It's in such a great area and the patio is awesome. The cocktails are off the chart. Especially the mai tai and the old fashioned!! They get you where you want to go. The food was so good, my favorite was the pizza. Some of the best pepperoni I've ever had. On top of that, the staff is top notch and incredibly sweet. I will absolutely be back!
google avatar

Urvie P.

Yelp
Pasadena location is a bit different from echo park. It's certainly bigger in size. They recently changed their menu drastically. Sage is no longer a plant based concept they now have upmost quality meats it's seems. Due to the change in concept it seems they took off some realllllllly good menu items. I used to love getting the vegetable lasagna since I could never get a good veggie lasagna anywhere else and they removed it . This time we opted for the cauliflower platter and a pizza. Both were good not great, but made me miss the old menu items even more. Plant based options are not as appealing as before. Maybe the cost of it was higher not sure why they got rid of the better options and kept a lot of average / cheaper / easier plant based options, my guess would be to keep up with the meat costs. Also I noticed our server was very slow, I felt like I barely saw her when we needed something. I had to flag down a bus boy for boxes to go and the check. Overall portions were very good tho, and flavor profiles have been consistent since the rebrand. Honestly I probably would not visit again, the unique plant based options are no longer available and the options that are present can be found at other restaurants as well.

Yelp
Where do I even start! From the second we walked in until when we left we were not only greeted with the best service, but the most DELICIOUS food! All of the food was high quality, fresh, and cooked to perfection. I ordered the Bonvivita cocktail with the nachos, and I could not recommend it more! We sat on the huge patio where there was great air movement for a warm day, and a great view of a little courtyard. Can't wait to go back, and try more great stuff!

Yelp
As a passionate vegan, this was my favorite restaurant, and I was always excited for the nachos and ice cream. I would rave about this place! It aligned with my values! It was a place for people like me who often feel left behind in restaurants. Today, we sat down at the restaurant to enjoy a yummy meal, and upon looking at the menu, I thought we were in the wrong place because I saw the word "venison," then "beef," then "chicken." We asked the server what happened, and I was crushed to hear that they went from fully vegan to...not. So, we left and went to a vegan counter service spot. Not the same, but at least it aligned with my values. Time to find a new favorite restaurant.

Kiki B.

Yelp
I have been coming to this place for many years. I truly think this is one of the only restaurants that cares more about the ingredients they are putting on your plate and all the effects of those ingredients than they do about the bottom line. I know there has been a lot of upsets about their recent change to not solely plant based (though they do still have a massive vegan menu) but they have always been about connecting customers to their food and giving them clean, nutrient dense options. They are doing that more than ever now. After hearing their story I often think now how many hands touched my food before it came to my plate? How did this affect the workers that picked it. Or the land it was grown on? It honestly changed the way I eat. So that along with their food which has continued to be delicious (and the beers yummm) I will continue to support and advocate for this place.

sherry j.

Yelp
This place is joke. Wrote a review same location that says its closed. Save your money, food is awful in all the ways. This $25 patty was raw. Servers and staff are amazing. Margs defend themselves. Waste of money and energy. Yuk, yuk, yuk!
google avatar

Erica S.

Yelp
I went to Sage for dinner with my husband, friends and 10 month old and we totally enjoyed ourselves. We got the nachos for the table to start with the carne asada and it was SO DELICIOUS! The flavors were poppin and the ingredients tasted fresh and clean. I got the grass fed beef burger and a side salad. The food came out fairly quickly and the flavors meshed really well. I got the watermelon margarita and if was perfect on a warm summer night. The wait staff was kind and attentive to our needs. Others at our table got the noodle bowl which was a great portion size and had good flavor. I'll for sure be going back with my family and friends.
google avatar

Yelp
Hopster Haze beer was my favorite. Great food in a nice location. Staff was nice. Restroom location is not convenient.
google avatar

Aaron F.

Yelp
So grateful to find a restaurant that has both delicious food and also cares about providing sustainably sourced food. I had the mandarin cocktail and the pepperoni pizza. The sourdough pizza crust was delicious and I could tell the cocktail was made with fresh ingredients. The service was great and they were very attentive to our needs. I would definitely recommend Sage to anyone looking for a great ambiance and fresh food in a quaint location.

Yelp
BE AWARE! This is not the same Plant-Based Bistro it was in April/May of 2024. They have completely flipped the menu and are now serving not only beef, but bison and antelope as well. They no longer serve burritos. The prices are outrageous. The kids menu is way overpriced. NO LONGER A VEGAN RESTAURANT. It looks like they got rid of the ice cream as well. This was our go-to vegan spot and we wanted to share that with our daughter, but today was probably our last visit (7/3/24). I wish them well but this review is to inform readers of the drastic overhaul Sage has undergone.

Suz P.

Yelp
Avoid this place unless you want a $30+ burger that tastes like any other average burger. Sage is a disappointment of a business and restaurant. The food quality has declined immensely but somehow they have almost doubled their prices. What a joke. I understand regenerative meat/ingredients are pricier, but not that much. At least match the quality to the price. It is obvious that the business is tanking (empty weekends, upset customers, insane prices, unhappy/overwhelmed managers, runaway owner). Save your money for some better quality food everyone. Oh I forgot to mention the cockroach I saw climbing the wall inside by our table :(

Eva H.

Yelp
This place used to be my favorite restaurant, it was 100% vegan!!!! , but the menu drastically changed, everything on the menu is very questionable... since everything plant-based and animal- base is prepared in the same kitchen..?! No, thank you, there are plenty of other vegan restaurant options in Los Angeles.. you definitely lost me as a customer!
google avatar

Coco A.

Yelp
Menu isn't the same menu as listed online. It's actually 1/4 of the online menu. The actual menu is horrible. Have no intentions of ever coming back. Came here years ago when it was all plant based. New menu changes are horrible. Come for drinks and get food somewhere else.
google avatar

Tamara P.

Yelp
I've loved Sage since they opened and love them even more now. The care that goes into where they source their food is highly respectable. It's a fun place to hang out and the food is delicious. I crave their chicken tacos & cauliflower 'wings'. :):)

Reed D.

Yelp
Awesome gem in Pasadena!! Great vibes, great food, and great old fashioned! I got the What's possible Burger along with the nachos! So good! Can't wait to go back!

A. H.

Yelp
I just ate here and it was delicious. I especially liked the tempura artichokes. My friend who is from Japan and a foodie really liked them as well. Everything was excellent. I jumped on Yelp to post a review and was surprised to see a bunch of negative reviews. Then I saw they were largely by vegans who are upset that they started serving high quality meat. I guess they're trying to punish the restaurant ... you know the cancel culture thing. Well, all I can say is that the food is really excellent and it's also really good for you. It's not cheap, but you aren't going to get good quality food cheap these days ... This place is well worth it. Ignore the haters.
google avatar

Erica K.

Yelp
Well they sure skirted the truth in response to my last post, I THOUGT they brought back the Festival Burrito since it was listed on the menu here... only to show up for it today and NOPE! Still no jackfruit in the menu. Hard pass on this place now. So disappointed in this menu change.
google avatar

Barbara C.

Yelp
The Buffalo cauliflower is simply the best! Servers are efficient and friendly. A refreshing, lovely spot right in the center of downtown Pasadena.
google avatar

Tyson T.

Yelp
What happened?? I know plenty of people are angry that they have started selling meat (I don't really care) but the quality has of the food has absolutely nose dived. My burrito was borderline inedible. Service was also awful, staff was friendly but basically nowhere to be found. Had to ask the seating hostess for someone to bring my check. So sad! I really loved this place!
google avatar

Yelp
Just not what it used to be. Options were not great and when I finally picked the Bahn Mi, I'm sorry to say but it was just not good at all. The other dish we chose was the eggplant arrabiata and it just lacked flavor. Really disappointed especially at this price point. Hope this menu can change for the better and soon because I do want to continue to support.

Jas S.

Yelp
I've eaten at sage plenty of times as I'm vegan and loved this place it was special before but I recently went and was told it was no longer all plant based that they offer meat and dairy now, I was disappointed to hear the news but ended up staying as I was with family who eat meat. I ordered a pizza and was shocked to find out that the pizza no longer comes with cheese and is still the same price it was like eating bread with tomato sauce! So disappointed they changed many items they had that were vegan and removed so much I also ordered a burger as well and it was also different did not taste the same at all. My family that eats meat ordered pizza, burgers and tacos and they said it was nothing special that they personally wouldn't go back to eat there and now I will not return for there vegan options either I complained about the pizza no long having cheese and the manager who I believe is the owner said she had to make the change to make more money and to get more clients but I believe she really is going to lose her business because the only thing that made this place special was that it was plant based... the food she offers meat eater they can get better tasting versions anywhere at a more affordable price as well She lost most of her vegan supports and I really don't see meat eater making this there go to as well Sadly disappointed and I will not return

Yelp
food quality, service, and price for what you get has gotten so bad. for almost a decade Sage was one of my favorites, and now my husband and i don't even bother trying. the last five (FIVE!!!) times have been an utter disappointment. food thrown together, soggy, messy, barely warm. servers were either rude or ignoring us, everyone looked unhappy. and the price continues to go up and up. we just can't justify it any more and it makes us sad. there's other better places for vegans to eat, and even more higher quality options in the area for meat eaters.

Yelp
Ambiance is nice, decor is nice, server is nice and accommodating. My family and I were really hungry and I wished we had listened to the yelp reviews. We ordered a kale salad on special, it was ok, a little over dressed. My husband and I ordered two $25+ burgers which we wanted a medium cook on both. We got well done, burnt patties. The pickling of side veggies was off. I only tried the carrot and I couldn't eat any more of it. My kiddo had the tofu strips, it was rubbery and my daughter only ate 1.5 pieces. I only ate maybe half my burger and couldn't eat anymore because my beef pattie was so burnt and hard to eat. We didn't send our burgers back because our 5 year old needed to get back to our hotel for bedtime. They also tried to pass off a made west hazy IPA which was another type of IPA. My husband was like, umm this is not made west and I had this beer a hundred times. The waitress was super nice and got 10% off. We still spent $100 on two burnt burgers that Gordon R. Would probably throw across the restaurant. I would never come back to this place and I definitely don't recommend. Also, they took my food before I could take a picture.

Yelp
Though vegan, not angry about the change, and came to try it out! I got the new Bahn Mi which was terrible (giant pile of miso dressing on pizza bread???). My favorite "potato ravioli over kale" that was actually delicious is gone including the "soul bowl." Really sad they don't know what items were worth keeping and wish this was a Bahn Mi I could get behind :-(

Yelp
We are vegan and Sage used to be our favorite restaurant in all of the LA area. The food was delicious and there were so many different options. We would come at least once a month for casual dinners as well as to celebrate special occasions such as Valentine's Day and to bring relatives/friends who were visiting us (most of them were non-vegan and they all enjoyed it!). Naturally we were very sad to see that they were changing from being all vegan to adding meat. However, we decided to give it a try after they made the transition. We were thoroughly disappointed. The menu was very different and they had removed all of our favorite vegan entrees! The lasagna, eggplant parm, ravioli, multiple flavors of pizzas - all gone. We ended up ordering the tofu banh mi sandwich and the fried artichoke hearts (luckily they hadn't gotten rid of this vegan appetizer). The sandwich was ok but nothing special. Why don't they bring back their delicious vegan pasta and pizza dishes?? They were a huge hit with everyone we ever brought to Sage (including non-vegans!) and we don't understand why they would remove these top menu items. We will not be coming back and will not be recommending this restaurant to others anymore.

Yelp
Totally miss the old menu and the food quality this place used to be the best in terms of quality of food now not just the menu has been revamped but the food quality has gone downhill so sad to see such a wonderful vegan place transform into an overpriced average quality food restaurant with horrible service
