Sahlen Packing Company Inc. Ham in NYC Delis Has Been Recalled for Plastic | Eater NY

"I learned that Sahlen Packing Company Inc., based in Buffalo, discovered late last week that more than 13,000 pounds of ready-to-eat whole hams used for slicing at delis were contaminated with extraneous materials — including pieces of plastic. The recalled hams, which carry labels such as “MARKET 32 BY PRICE CHOPPER BLACK FOREST HAM” and “EST. 5155,” were shipped to stores and delis across New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. So far no adverse reactions have been reported, but the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service is urging anyone who purchased the meats to throw them away or return them to the store." - Carla Vianna

Sahlen’s smoked ham is the best ham I’ve ever tasted. My local butcher talked me into trying it. Ever since he sliced me off a fresh slice, I haven’t looked back. The texture & flavor is unmatched. We don’t eat any other ham. Keep up the great work Y’all!

These hot dogs are straight up trash. Worst taste, texture and smell of any hot dog avaliable. The only reason people in Buffalo like them is because they have never had a quality hot dog. Try a hot dog from Super Sausage and you’ll never look back.

Paid for 2nd day air. Shipment is now delayed with no location. Perishable items so I'm guessing my 10lbs of hot dogs will be spoiled after sitting in a UPS warehouse all weekend. Now I know that ordering hot dogs online is not a reasonable or viable option.

I grew up loving sahlens hot dogs and bologna. But now the casing on the hot dogs is so tough and the bologna has shrunk in size and they added so much fat, i mean you can see the white fat. Why take a good thing and ruin it because of greed, raise the prices if you have to i buy only Hoffmans hot dogs from Syracuse ny and they are amazing. They didnt mess with the original recipe.

Fast shipping and great product!!! We live in Nevada and can’t get Sahlen’s hot dogs here. Paired with Weber’s mustard, they’re the perfect taste of Buffalo!!!

The absolute best Hot Dog period. l get The Pre Grilled Smoke House dogs and I find myself wanting one every day. I’m from The Burgh and we salute you Buffalo. Keep sending them. I tell everyone how good they are. PS Watching The Go Bowling at Watkins Glen

Ordering was easy, fast, and safe. But the foot long hot dogs was the best tasting hot dog I ever tasted. I won’t buy any other hot dogs. Money well spent!!!!!

Yelp
I first tried a Sahlen's hot dog at a hot dog place in Las Vegas, Nevada and was impressed with the quality of the hot dog. Learning a bit about the hot dog, I learned that it was a favorite up in upstate New York and came from Buffalo, New York. Upstate New York seems to know good hot dogs. First, they have Sahlen's hot dogs, which I am reviewing here, as well as the fantastic Hofmann's hot dogs. I know people think either New York City or Chicago when they think hot dogs, but let me say, upstate New York is worthy of culinary accolades just on the power of both Sahlen's and Hofmann's and their fantastic hot dogs. Sahlen's has both beef hot dogs and a pork and beef blend hot dog. Both are fantastic and your favorite will be determined y your taste or by your mood on that particular day. As a rule, I usually prefer the pork and beef blend hot dogs, but will be in the mood for an all beef hot dog here and there. I keep both in my freezer. If you have Sahlen's hot dogs in your supermarket, I recommend checking them out. I give them five stars.

Yelp
I want to cry. Shalen's smokehouse ham is slowly disappearing from NC. I was introduced to this high quality and wonderful flavor ham when I lived in Virginia. This was a primary ham for Harris Teeter, but the Boar's Head, a bigger brand but not the flavor pushed them out. Then I moved to NC and joy's of joy's, Walmart had Sahlen's. Now Prima Della, a lower quality product is pushing them out. So if you are a lucky one and live in an area with Sahlen's smoke house ham, do yourself a favor and buy some. Make yourself a ham sandwich or a Cuban sandwich with roast pork. That and a cold Sam Adams and you will be in food heaven.

Yelp
How does Sahlens have no reviews? Anyone growing up here grew up on these. At least when allowed to have hotdogs. They have been around for a century or so and have expanded into other parts of the US, often because Buffalonians moved and brought Sahlens with them. They have gotten themselves into some national supermarket chains, so probably will be available across the lower 48 soon. They still make their product at the original location and have expanded as demand grows. They have remained current by using the latest technology in food safety to make sure all are indeed, safe. They have grown as the demand changes and make all beef and beef and pork hotdogs now. They also make other packaged meats and offerings. We are lucky to have this 150 year old company in Buffalo, it'll soon be a household name across America. And it'll still be in Buffalo.

Yelp
Every time I find a place that sells this product, they stop carrying it. It is never advertised or even listed at the point of sale. This is the only lunch meat I like. Unfortunately, I can not find any place locally that sells it any more. Contacting the company was useless. Five stars for taste, no stars for availabilitie!
