Friendly staff for sure — that’s honestly why I’m giving it four stars. The food itself was just okay. They do have a “Blue Plate Special” for about $14.99, but most other meals will run you closer to $25. The line was long and they took a while to get to me, but the whole setup is pretty interesting since it’s actually inside a church and really close to the convention center. Overall, it’s a decent spot if you’re already in the area, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to come back.

This place has the most delicious Mac n cheese. They've also got REALLY GOOD grilled chicken and green beans, and their fish and corn bread is amazing. Definitely one of the best places to get food in DC. Staff is super friendly. Highly highly recommend.

I recently visited Saints Paradise Cafeteria and was impressed by the quality of the food. The ribs were absolutely delicious—tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. What a great experience. The food was some of the best that I've ever had. The staff is amazing and so warm and attentive. The location is really nice. This is something that everyone should try at least once. We like that so much yesterday we are going back for lunch today

I have lived in the DMV area for the last almost 5 years and had not found a restaurant with some well seasoned soul food! I am from the south (Ga Peach) & I cook everything from scratch, so when my cousin (dc native) recommended this location simply because of pricing, service & SEASONED soul food. I HAD to try it out and when I tell you these ladies did not disappoint!!! The food was AMAZING very well seasoned. I decided on a turkey wing plate which came with 2 sides. The meat just literally fell off the bone !!!!! It’s a cafeteria so it’s plenty room to sit and enjoy your food. I would rate this experience a 100/10 definitely recommend & will be returning, just wish I had found this place sooner!!!

Best kept secret in DC. I’m upset I just found out about this place. The food reminds me of good old home cooking. I had to chicken leg, fried whiting, collards, yams and Mac. Prices aren’t bad either. I paid $24. Everything was delicious, I just wish the fish had more salt/seasoning on it but the chicken and sides were perfect! I would definitely come back to try more, maybe some turkey wings.

Great food, great service at a cheap price. I took the fried fish/whitling, beans and cabbage. Everything was delicious. They also give free cornbread on the side. Corn bread was soo good!! If you opt for the blue plate, you can save some money as the dinner platter is a lot of food to eat.

I take my aunt here annually to pick up her thanksgiving catered order. Today we decided to have lunch as well. This place has a warm feeling and the staff is stern but in a friendly organized way. The food is good and I am thankful for free street parking. Great job SPC!

Wowwwww....My Mississippi Grandma gave them her recipes. My Rating:10/10 I visited here in March(& my first visit 2 The African American Museum). The Whiting,sweet potatoes,turnip greens taste like "Real,picking from the field cuisine". The serving was exceptional. The price was overly fair. The customer service was so pleasant & accommodating. They are "Paradise".

The cafeteria food is good.The portions are great.I like the pork chops smothered in gravy .The brown gravy on rice was nice.Turkey wings,cabbage,collard greens,.The staff interaction or banter is great!The conversation I had with the lady on smothered pork chop and gravy poured on pork chop was fun.I like talking about southern food.You won't be disappointed. I'll keep it short and sweet about this hidden gem. We got the rib plate and the fried chicken plate. Total was about $27 (cash only). The chicken was delicious but you only get one breast the ribs are a BARGAIN as the entire container was full. I wish they served meatloaf every day as I would love to try that. The line moves slow and it's a long one. Wait time was about 45 minutes on a Saturday afternoon. They had run out of quite a few things so make sure to get here early. We will certainly be back but will go in early for what we want. The sides are delightful and clearly everything is made fresh in house.

This food is making me reconsider my current stance on being an atheist. OMG this is ALL the goodness from my childhood and mama's cooking. They could use some AC in there, or some retractable shades for the windows.

Great spot for a quick, fresh meal cooked with love. Stopped by on a Sunday morning and had a great breakfast. Grits, eggs scrambled w cheese, sausage patties, and a most delicious biscuit. If I wasn't on a diet I would have had a slice of that strawberry cake as well. Support this neighborhood institution and give it a try.

Very affordable and incredibly delicious soul food cafe! I popped in on a Saturday around noon and got 3 of the meals (fish dinner plate, chicken dinner plate, and shrimp plate) to share with four friends which were all delicious. You can't go wrong with any of them! We were able to try all of the sides and my favorites were the mac & cheese and collard greens. I also really enjoyed the apple pie. You enter this cafeteria through a side entrance of the church. You move through the serving line to order and you can point to the items you want. Everyone in there is super nice! We took our food to go but there were also tables set up to enjoy your food inside after you order/pay.

I was advised by a fantastic local DC couple to go here during my visit in the DC downtown area. My experience was nothing less than phenomenal! Whenever I'm in DC, I make my way over to Saint's Paradise. While I do love the food and I've never had a bad meal there, I love the people and the place. It's a great place to sit, eat, talk to complete strangers, people watch, and soak in the goodness of the place.

Stopped by for lunch during conference in the Washington Convention Center. Cafeteria style and cash only. I had the rib dinner platter which had two huge ribs and two sides. I got the collard greens and candied yam as sides. Everything was delicious and the people were friendly. Whole meal cost about $17. It was a really great price compared to the other options nearby.

I have been here a few times over the years and the staff and service is always the best. They make sure you get the best of everything. The experience is not complete until you sit and break bread with an unmet friend.

This is not a regular table service restaurant. It is a church cafeteria. It's less than a block east of the Mt Vernon Sq 7St-Convention Center Metro Station. If you're planning to come here, try not to come on a Sunday or else you'll be waiting in a very long line and some of the menu items will be sold out by the time you get up to the counter to order. Also, they only accept cash. If you don't have any cash, they have an ATM machine on site. I came here through word of mouth. My friend knew that I was going to be in the DC area and told me that I needed to check this place out for some soul food. It's probably among the best southern food that you're going to find this far north. Everything was very reasonably priced. When I was here, I wanted to try their meatloaf, but they were all out. My backup was their chicken wings, but they were all out of those as well. They allowed me to get chicken legs instead of the wings. I got them with collard greens and mac & cheese. The meal came with corn bread. I got their peach cobbler for dessert. Currently, masks are required when inside unless you're actively eating. They've also spaced the tables out a bit.

Ok Ok..I FINALLY get to eat here and enjoy this southern/soul food. I've had this place bookmarked for a while but never had the time to venture over. I came for lunch with my coworkers since my supervisor made a suggestion that we try this spot. In my yelper mind, I'm thinking "YES! And I actually have this place bookmarked!" The place is considered a "landmark" that many locals are familiar with. Its attached to a church or what I'll call "a place of worship" but don't let it fool you and dont let it stop you from walking in and getting full of GOODNESS! I ordered the whiting fish, greens, mac and cheese, and of course lemon cake! Don't let my slim build fool you..I ate ALL of it with NO regrets! It was THAT good. It has the great southern flavors and will keep you satisfied and wanting more! I couldn't even go to back to work and be productive and wanted to just go find a nice bed to sleep for the rest of my day. They have different selections for every day and have a set menu as well. I definitely need to come back again and try the other dishes!

Very good food and awesome service. I don't know what I was expecting from this church run cafeteria but what I got was flavorful soul food with somebody's Grandmomma/Auntie/Momma in the back cooking this food fit for your soul! I arrived so hungry and greedy, I am ashamed to post my meal here...but I will! Lol! I had the porkchop meal with macaroni & cheese and green beans. I just had to get a side of the candied yams...I was eating so fat! The candied yams tasted like angles prepared them while fairies hovered over them sprinkling fairy dust over the completed product! Y'all stop through now, ya hear?!

Stopped by this place before going the Auto Show next door, and glad we did! From the moment we walked in where we heard loud cries of "Cobbler" and faint whispers of "Blue Plate Specials", we knew that the saints were blessing our food choice. The line moved at the pace of yeast rising, but it didn't matter, as it gave us ample opportunity to decide which dessert we wanted, since those were the first thing on the cafeteria conveyor belt. I went with a slice of Cherry Pie for example. The guy behind me went with two slices of cake and a Banana Cream Pie. We're all responsible for the choices we make. For the main dish, everything from fried pork chops (paired well with fried shrimp) to not Catfish, but "something in the same family" rang true, all of which comes with two sides. I asked for a slice of Cornbread, and was reminded, that, "it's included, baby". All of the aforementioned was washed down with a 32oz. Lemonade, as is written in the Gospel. From start to finish, from first entering this holy establishment to the last bite of Mac 'n Cheese, Saint's Paradise Cafeteria wen't above and beyond the calls from upon high, and somewhere I would recommend and return to, if given the opportunity...

Well I come here atleast once a week this is the only soul food that's almost compatible to my great grandmas. I usually get veggie platters but sometimes I decide to get meat. I've tried the spaghetti fried fish baked chicken legs green yams cabbage and Mac n cheese ribs plus more lol only problem is some days are slow so they food isn't all that fresh but still some of the best soul food in the dmv straight from this church. also the yams sometimes have hard strings in them which I hate but I just take them out my mouth which is kinda a hassle but they are so sweet I just be wanting them lol. They have some good cakes but lately they haven't been having that many flavors. The lemonade tea mix is so goodt I can't leave without grabbing one. I seen them give ppl on the streets free food and tell them they have to eat it inside. Sometimes I wish that was me I'll come eat inside everyday for free it can get expensive sometimes up to 30$ just for me with cake dinner tray and an extra side or wateva they do have blue plate specials and kids specials but the greens is so good my son be upset that I get him that because they give a smaller portion for kids. If you ever looking to get soul food eat here you won't be disappointed

The food is delicious and fresh. While I don't like most restaurants' collards, because they taste like they are from the can, Saints Paridise collards are fresh greens. I usually get three dinners and usually order collards for all of my sides. I love the place.

Lawd have mercy!! I've finally found some good southern food in DC! This food tastes like everybody in the kitchen is a grandmother from down south! The customer service was superb! Saint's Paradise doesn't start serving lunch until 12:15. So we were kindly shown 2 others cafeterias within the church that had food as well and were ready to serve what we wanted (Soul Food)! They have a candy stand and all sorts of stuff going on in this church. It's cash only so no CCs people. They do have an ATM on site. Which was out of order when we came, but one of the ushers walked us to the corner store where they had an ATM and escorted us back to the church!! Talk about customer service!! The food!! Whewww!! Every bite was amazing and I felt like I was gaining weight as I was eating it!! I had neckbones, Mac n cheese, greens, cornbread, strawberry lemonade!! YASSS!!! Then the banana pudding ! This was homemade, double boiler, pudding from scratch banana pudding! Thank you Yelp for putting me on to this gem!! I am a forever customer!

A friend brought me here 10 years ago and I never forgot this place. You know you're in the right place when you see people who look like your grandma serving food or cleaning up. Feels Like Home The cornbread tasted like pound cake, the croaker was delicious, Fried Chicken needed a little seasoning. I initially plan to get the cabbage but I could tell by looking at the dressing it was going to be so good, the dressing tastes like my grandma made it, mac n cheese was on point. The staff was very helpful & entertaining. A mask is required and they only take cash but there's an ATM in the rear of the cafeteria. Everything is very clean, will definitely be returning on my next trip. If you're a tourist the Metro is right there on the corner within walking distance maybe a block away

Listen y'all, I was born and raised in Atlanta and this is some real southern cookin'. They say VA is part of the "south" but I don't think so when you get blank stares when you mention shrimp and grits, okra, or green bean casserole... It's nothing pretentious - just plain good cooking. Will it blow your mind? No, I don't think southern food is meant to be like that, and that's why it gets a bad rep. But it will take you to a place where you're full, happy, and ready to take on the rest of the day. Generous portions, delicious, some of that southern hospitality I ain't seen anywhere else up north yet. I probably wouldn't come out of my way to eat here, but if I get a real itch of the south I'll come back. Cash only.

Found this place while visiting and I must say remind me of my grannies cooking. Everything looked good and tasted amazing.The staff was very friendly and the portions are very well. Will definitely visit this place when I come back.

Saints Paradise is legitimate. It's been in existence for as long as I can remember. Prior to the pandemic the food was great and currently it's still great. Yes, the prices have increased just like the prices of everything else but the food is still great. Your pro tip is, go when they have turkey wings!

Good souther cuisine. I had the Turkey Wings and they were fall off the bone good. The Mac n Cheese was okay and the potato salad was good. The only thing I didn't care to much for was the dessert. I was expecting grandma's pound cake but I got was not it. Service was great and it's CASH ONLY! An ATM is located in the rear of the flushing hall.

I am a Southern Belle, born and raised, but living in the North now. I know what real Southern cooking is. You can't fool me with that thrown together junk guises as Soul Food. So a friend of mine at work recommended this place. Another friend and I got an Uber at lunchtime and headed there. Just a heads up, they don't take debit or credit cards, so bring cash. In the event that you forget, they have an ATM to the left as you enter. We went on a Friday at lunchtime. The line was long, but we were determined to wait. They were out of fried chicken so I opted for the fried catfish platter which comes with two sides and cornbread. I chose Mac and cheese and cabbage. I also get an extra Mac and cheese for later. I hate people who cook without seasoning. ALL of the food was already well seasoned. I was pleasantly surprised. Everything was cooked perfectly. I felt like I was home in NC. I'm not a big cornbread fan, but theirs is delicious!! I'm not a huge fan of cake, but their desserts were so tempting so I tried the strawberry cake(the pink one-they have two different kinds). This is going to be a regular spot for us now. The line moved slow, but that was my only complaint. This is hands down one of the best places I've had for authentic soul food. It's a MUST try! Loved this place!

DAMN. I hate I have to give Daddy Grace spot 3 stars because this was my favorite place to dine in DC from 2014-2019. The food is phenomenal. Very nostalgic, I've been eating at saints paradise since living in NC and the food down there was equally as bomb. The service is great, all the lil church ladies are so sweet and helpful! I love interacting with them. Cash only!!! My one gripe with this place, and it's a big one, is how nasty it is, and I really hate to say this, but they're pretty gross. So gross it's made me stop eating there, although I love the food. I can't help but to start looking behind the service line in corners and such and it's pretty grimy which makes eating the food tough. Hopefully they do a cleaning overhaul so their biggest fan (myself) can come back because God knows I want a turkey wings plate.

The ladies working here make this place a 5 star just on their hospitality. I arrived early on a Saturday morning with the toddler in tow. Upon entering all the women working immediately treated the tiny tyke like their own grandchild! I have been wanting to check this neighborhood spot out for some time and it did not disappoint. We got a breakfast special with eggs, cheese grits, turkey sausage, and a biscuit. Everything was delicious. I was pleasantly surprised that they serve their entire menu at breakfast and I had to resist ordering the amazing looking mac and cheese with every fiber in my body! Definitely coming back for that!

Despite the food being served cafeteria style, the line moves incredibly slow. I ordered the baked chicken, cabbage, macaroni and cheese and corn bread, the chicken was over cooked and dry, the corn bread had a strange mouth feel like it wasn't mixed properly, and the macaroni and cheese was tasteless.

I have a love hate relationship with this place. Pros : Good food (hit or miss) Bomb cake Cons: Food hit or miss- too salty or bland RUDE customer service sometimes. "Wait, I thought you said we're getting soul food for lunch. Why are we going into a church?" Thanks to Yelp - who knew such amazing cafeteria serving beyond delicious, ginormous, affordable, home-cooked soulFUL meal exists in the basement of a church! It's a true cafeteria - enter one side, pile your tray, pay and exit on the other. There were so many choices to choose from - ultimately, I went with their blue plate special - 2 baked wings, 2 sides - candied yam + stewed cabbage, corn bread, and a drink, while my husband went with their baked whiting fish dinner platter, 2 sides - collard green, mashed potato, corn bread. My blue plate special was just perfect - pulled off the bone, juicy, succulent wings, perfectly seasoned stewed cabbage, and drool inducing candied yam. My husband's fish platter - let's say was a bit ridiculous (in the best possible way) - 3 whole fish filet, each the size of my husband's arm, overstuffed collard green, and gravy spilling mashed potato - it was a struggle to close this box let alone to finish this meal in one sitting. Did I mention the fish was moist + perfectly battered - (forget tartar sauce!)? The collard green convinced my husband to LOVE greens? And the mashed potato was spoonful, after spoonful of yummy goodness? The staffs were beyond the nicest, sweetest - not your every day jaded cafeteria lunch ladies. They really put their pride and joy in making and serving food to every customer. Everyone was extremely welcoming. 5 stars all around - My husband and I can't wait to return to try the rest of the menu (crabcake, shrimp basket - we are coming for you!).

If you know and like soul food! COME HERE ASAP!!!!!! PRO TIP - if you go on a Sunday - don't interrupt church by walking into the church entrance, look for the cafeteria entrance! It has a red door down some steps! I'm from Chicago and I'm a true foodie, I enjoy food with flavor, to give you a background on my palate. Food : Great, its that church basement (literally) soul food that black people are used to from the south! Everything is freshly prepared that same day! The breakfast is also delicious! What I didn't like - The fish... it tasted like fish sticks! The breading and seasoning was good but it was fried too long and the fish didn't taste fresh! Also, the fried chicken could use a marinade and additional flavor and seasoning mixed in the batter. It looked great and was prepared well but it has the potential to be A LOT BETTER! Lemonade were excellent Mac and cheese were excellent Yams/sweet potatoes were excellent Collard greens were excellent Corn bread was good Scrambled eggs were excellent! Corned beef hash was simply AMAZING! The biscuit was phenomenal! I could eat a bunch endlessly! Cheese grits were plentiful and excellent! Service - Great! Nice down home soul food cafe. I remember it being better than what it was today though. The turkey winds were bland, but the baked chicken was good. The fired whitting was ok but not great. I was really disappointed by the baked mac & cheese and the greens and green beans were out of a can. Even the pound cake missed the mark! I will however be back because I support the mission of the church and have had better meals here.

Holy Hot Sauce . Had a business meeting at my new favorite southern/soul food spot, Saint's Paradise cafeteria. NOTE: It's connected to a lovely church. This puts working lunches elsewhere to shame! Amazing slow cooked greens, creamy mac 'n cheese and homemade mashed potatoes. Fried chicken, and more for the meat lovers. The menu rotates daily so be sure to come back often. Seating is communal. Try their homemade iced tea. Although not available that day, I am told their banana pudding is out of this world. Go early as a line forms out the door quickly

I am from out of town and found this place on Yelp. I love to go to local places that tourists don't get to. This is a great example. If you are looking for gourmet food, this is not for you. But if you are looking for a comfortable place with some local color this is great. It is in the basement of a church. The staff was great. The food was mediocre. Would I come back? You bet!

Our order: seafood combo: a piece of fried whiting fish, a crab cake and about 6-8 fried shrimps. The sides with this was Mac n cheese and fried potatoes. Strawberry Cake. Verdict: I will never order the crab cake again, reason it was LOADED WITH SHELLS.. the worst thing ever. The Mac n cheese had no flavor and was basically cheese and noodle, maybe held by an egg. The fried potatoes needed basic seasoning. The shrimp were decent and the fish was ok, bone central since it was a small piece. Second order: Fried fish dinner, with potato salad and Mac n cheese, peach pie and marble cake. Verdict: Fish was ok(beware of the bones), read above about the Mac n cheese, the potato salad was very good.

Got recommended to go to this cafeteria during a work conference nearby. Otherwise, I don't think we would have ever found this place since it is in the bottom of a church! I love that they have comfort food, especially since it was rainy and cold the days I visited. I tried their catfish, mac and cheese, and collard greens the first day of the conference. The catfish was delicious! Perfectly crispy and flaky on the inside. The mac and cheese was a bit mushy but I still enjoyed it. Collard greens were good and flavorful. The second day I got the whiting fish but I did not like it as much as the catfish. They were very generous with the portion though. The mash potatoes and cabbage were both yummy both could be better. Not sure when I'll be able to come back since I rarely eat in DC but will stop by if I'm in that area again!

It's cool but not your typical spot in dc. It's inside of a church called Daddy Graces in NW. Parking was ok and the people there were really friendly! I would go back surely.

I purchased two different plates to taste everything. That probably was the worst soul food I've ever eaten. What soul food restaurant makes pack gravy lol. Anyone who thinks this is quality soul food has really low standards. I'm from New Orleans and eat soul food all the time. I literally threw both plates in the trash. I wanted to like it but it's certainly not worth the money
