Tokyo’s Best Speakeasy Bars to Feel the Vibes

"Shinya Sakurai, who has researched various ways to enjoy and brew Japanese tea, opened a tea shop in Omotesando in 2014. They offer a wide variety of teas, including in-house roasted tea, “gyokuro” tea, and the rare fermented tea called “Goishicha,” as well as tea cocktails. Enjoy a set of gyokuro, blended tea, and four tea cocktails accompanied by Japanese sweets. The tea cocktails brewed in the quiet ambiance will help you take a deep breath and refresh." - Kyoko Nakayama

Lionel Beccat of Two MICHELIN Stars ESqUISSE Shares His Favorite Parts of Tokyo

"It’s no exaggeration to say that this restaurant opened my eyes to Japanese tea. Everything comes together perfectly—selecting the most appropriate water, adjusting the temperature, choosing the tea utensils, a certain way of speaking, the manners when preparing and serving, and more—all together they create the tea you’ll enjoy here." - Wakana Kubo

27 Best Things to Do in Tokyo

"Copper and wood greet you inside this minimalist sanctuary dedicated to sado, the Japanese “way of tea.” A small retail space filled with glass jars containing 30 varieties of green tea conceals an intimate eight-seat cafe. Founder Shinya Sakurai studied for 14 years to become a master, and his modern take on tea ceremony is meditative and illuminating. As Sakurai prepares the infusions behind an L-shaped wooden counter, a continuous stream of water flows from a copper tap—a symbol of purification. Gyokuro, a luxurious variety of green tea grown in the shade, is the specialty here. Sakurai travels the country to select the leaves, which he roasts daily in-house. The tasting flight for ¥4,800 (about $35) is the best introduction to the range of teas on offer." - Anna Chittenden, Melinda Joe

Google
Sensational. It was honestly such a delicately perfect experience, one you should absolutely go for if you’re willing to pay the price. Is it a slightly insane price for some tea yes. Would I pay to do it again. Yes. My word every sip of tea was so carefully constructed I’ll never experience tea like that again. It was such an amazing way to have tea. Felt like I was watching scientists at work.

Recommend making a reservation for your visit! The entire tea experience was incredible. The professional staff will give you a special course and experience. It was great learning for us from the US to learn more about Japanese tea. It would be a great opportunity if you're interested in Japanese tea.

Google
I tried the “Tea and Liqueur Course.” The full experience takes about an hour, with each tea served in a beautiful set of cups and utensils. The tea masters’ graceful and intentional gestures add a sense of ceremony to the tasting — a true delight for both the senses and the soul. Highly recommended as a serene and refined stop before shopping in the area!

Google
Very nice experience. We did the gyokuro set and the tea was amazing plus watching the whole brewing process was very cool. I don't think paying for the cocktails would be worth it so I'm very happy that I just stayed with the tea set. During our time there were mostly foreigners until thankfully a Japanese couple came so it didn't feel a tourist trap!

Look, it’s a bit wanky and expensive but utterly delightful. I did the tasting menu and loved the whole experience. Recommend seeking the seat facing the work station as watching the fastidious and deliberate making of the drinks was a big part of the delight.

Google
Unforgettable experience!! Cannot recommend enough. Everyone so kind, helpful and just amazing at their craft. I had the pleasure Hiro and Kanako mixing my tea cocktails. Definitely a highlight of my trip!!!

Google
This is a great place to learn more about Japanese teas in a tranquil and intimate setting. I ordered their houjicha and matcha, which each came with a pairing of sweets. We were first given a glass of cold-brewed gyokuro, which had a refreshing umami flavour with absolutely no bitterness or astringency. We were then given a selection of teas to choose from and were encouraged to smell the dry leaf to help with this. With the houjicha, you select the unroasted green tea which they will then roast on-site to turn it into houjicha. I also got to taste tencha before it was grounded up into matcha. Our host was absolutely excellent throughout. He answered all our questions about the teas, the experience, and had even provided restaurant recommendations. When looking at their menu prices, don't think of it as a cafe - you are paying for an education, the excellent hospitality, and for a master who can help guide you with your tea journey.

Fantastic experience. If you're at all interested in tea this is a must-see. We did the spring floral tea experience and it was well worth it.

Yelp
Sakurai Tea Experience provides a modern take on the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, with curated tea cocktails and course menus in a intimate setting. We were looking forward to coming here months in advance for our Japan trip and I am so glad we stopped by here for a memorable and elevated tea experience. We ordered the gyokuro and the highest grade gyokuro at our reservation. We were amazed by the art and practice of our tea practitioner who also spoke English and led us through our gyokuro brews. We received three brews along with seasonal wagashi in between. The service and tea experience was exceptional; I hope to return again to try a course menu next time.

Yelp
Very glad we found this tea ceremony activity. We tried 5 different kinds of tea and appreciated the art of tea making. The environment was welcoming and serene. The little snacks were nice and creative. I guess for the average tea consumer their tea could feel a bit too strong. The snack portions were tiny.

Yelp
Really great bar in Tokyo! Amazing drinks and ambiance. Really enjoyed the tea inspired drinks and the people. I didn't make a reservation but since I was by myself it was alright. From what I heard there were some parties that made reservations several months ahead of time and making a reservation is usually required. Great place if you're looking for an authentic tea ceremony experience with alcohol. Plenty of options for non alcohol as well.

Yelp
This is without a doubt, the best, most intimate tea experience I've ever had in my entire life. The menu is intricately curated and accessible to novice and experienced tea drinkers. The service is impeccable even to the high standards you can expect in a tea ceremony. The movement in the preparation of your tea courses is precise and practiced, the soft lighting warm colors enhance the aromatics, and I was almost brought to tears at the depth of taste.

Yelp
Sakurai Tea Experience is an amazing place to experience a modern, updated tea ceremony. The teas are all carefully-selected and (if you choose a roasted version) hand-roasted in front of you. The sweets pair extremely well with the tea. There are tea-infused alcohol options, as well. I would definitely recommend reservations. We were lucky enough to get in without one, but many people were turned away while we were there. It's definitely a place to spend a leisurely afternoon enjoying tea, not a place to rush. The staff are all extremely professional and well-trained, and the whole atmosphere is calm and serene. You can buy their tea in their small shop and it's worth the cost. They do a fantastic job here.

Yelp
Small shop but such a unique experience. Make sure to make reservations to ensure you have seating. You can quickly tell the experience and finesse that the tea baristas have when it comes to making the drinks. We ordered the green tea gin, whiskey, and a couple other green tea drinks. All of the drinks were excellent and unique in its own way. The whiskey had a good smoky flavor to it and the green tea was extremely refreshing. The spirits were not too expensive but the green tea was on the pricier side (roughly 1800 yen each) so be wary of the price if you are on a budget.

Yelp
Small upscale tea shop. I dropped by to pickup some Japanese tea, they had a good variety of tea to chose from. It's a bit pricey but I picked up a few bags. Unfortunately there was no seating available to enjoy tea in the shop, reservations are recommended.

Yelp
This was my favorite experience in Tokyo! Extremely warm, friendly and knowledgeable staff. They touched my heart honestly. The pairings with infused liqour teas left me mesmerized by the attention to detail and just overall artistic passion put behind each cocktail. You have to go here if you visiting Tokyo! It's honestly a must!!!!

Yelp
A truly unique experience if you were to get a set tasting menu. Reservations highly recommended. I got the set tasting menu that allowed me to try gyokuro (higher grade) tea, hojicha tea, a blended tea and matcha. It was lovely sitting there, in a peaceful room where the tea artist would explain each infusion and detail. I liked tea before but didn't know much about Japanese teas and so it was a great learning experience, as much as it was about the tea. We left the place feeling fully caffeinated and rejuvenated. Thoroughly loved the experience.

Yelp
This was my first time in Japan and I was amazed at all the good tea I found. I think I probably ended up drinking more tea than anything else on my trip, which made the experience I had at Sakurai all the better. I got the tea with a meal tasting. They served both black and green tea through the course with a main dish of rice, chestnuts, pickled veggies, and a salted sardine. The rice was amazing. The tea, even better. Definitely worth going out of the way to try it out.

Yelp
The Sakurai Tea Experience was one of my favorite activities on a recent trip to Tokyo. This is tea unlike any other and the patience and discipline on display is awe-inspiring. Every single movement performed during the tea preparation was efficient and graceful. The environment is serene and you could easily spend 3-4 hours here trying various teas prepared by a true master.
