"Oakland “If there’s one thing that gets me out of my sweats and out the door, it’s the promise of seasoned, thinly-sliced meat swaddled in bread. So when I heard gyro wraps were on the menu at Twins Halal Bakery in West Oakland, I rolled up to the small takeout window and got one for myself. Inside the lovingly tin-foiled soft pita was lamb, lettuce, and tomatoes, slathered in a garlicky yogurt sauce. And now, the family-run Afghan place has earned its spot as my favorite new restaurant of the year. If you like the idea of unboxing perfect vegetable bolanis, meat-filled mantus, qabuli palows, and crispy waffles fries at your table like you’re some sort of influencer, something tells me you’re going to feel the same way.” -Lani Conway, SF Editor" - team infatuation

The chicken halal plate from this place is Beyond DELICIOUS! If you like halal food, you won’t be disappointed eating here. It’s pretty good. The block it’s in can be sketchy at times, so practice caution when parking, stay alert and quick purchasing. They also have really good herbs, seasonings and products to purchase.

Google
Its a Mediterranean shop/Halal restaurant which have majority of mediterranean grocery items and little of Pakistani/indian grocery. I stopped here for food and surprisingly its mouth watering. I tried Chicken Shawarma wrap, Shishtoak and Philly Steak wrap beef & lamb. All were yummy (specially wraps) and had good serving size. Giving 4 stars for food. Must give it a try specially if you are bored of having same Desi food everytime.

Gauhar Ali

Google
Nice small place with limited grocery items and a restaurant in side lamb was not soft enough in wrap. Overall nice place

Grant Marr

Google
Amazing food, 10/10. Called in for takeout. The hummus, falafel, and baba ghanoush were all the real deal. First time trying Yemeni shakshouka and it’s incredible (it’s more of an egg scramble).

Kashif Khan

Google
when asked cashier that it looks burned he agreed with me but the cook was was disrespectful towards me and started arguing. He said that inside is still good and refused to make another one... on of the worst cook attitude I have ever seen... the ship is great but they need to replace the cook period..

Andy S

Google
Took longer than I wanted, but I'm more impatient than most people and my falafel wrap was definitely definitely definitely worth the wait. Everyone who works there and the regulars are outstanding folks. Very lively shop and if you need something they don't carry, they'll probably get it for you for the next time you come in. Keep this local business alive, folks.

Google

Vicente De Almeida

Google
Google say it closes at 9pm I came in 7:55 the person informed they’re closing in 5 minutes

Yelp
They make good fresh eats everyday. It's a regular urban stores with a food counter with various options to order. Their grilled chicken and lamb plates are nicely portioned and always hot.

Yelp
DO NOT SLEEP on this halal market and deli in West Oakland. It has the rating it has for a reason! Also, it's super close to the West Oakland BART station if you ever need to be there. I was actually stopping by to stop by a Goth market event at a local brewery (to review shortly)... The market has all of the things you would expect. Nothing off there. The real (!!!) kicker is the counter-serve deli they have. The food is quite frankly some of the best Middle Eastern food I have EVER had - and at an extremely affordable price. You order at the counter and it takes a bit because they are actually making your dish fresh! I ordered two dishes. First, I had to order the lamb platter - the store is Yemeni and lamb mandi is unique Yemeni specialty. It's basically lamb, rice, spices, veggies, yogurt and all the other stuff you'd expect. The meal was absolutely delicious and massive. There were two giant pieces of lamb - that basically slid right off the bone. An absolutely amazing dish. I also come from a very lamb-meat-centric culture and I was absolutely shocked at how soft this lamb was - I've actually never experienced anything like it!!! Second, I ordered the veggie platter because it was cheap and wanted to take something home. It was pretty good - hummus, baba ghanouj, pita, falafel, rice - also all the things you would expect. Also a great, solid meal. They also give out complimentary Yemeni tea. I think it's sugared up green tea. A bit too sweet for me, but a nice touch if you're into that. There's a few places outside to sit. Though it was actually raining the day I went, so I had to eat in my car. So I guess the enjoyableness of your dining experience is a bit dependent on weather. Anyways, the food is cheap, generally very good, and the lamb mandi plate is absolutely one of the best things I have ever eaten in that part of the Bay. Highly recommended if you want a tasty, cheap, filling meal (especially if you need to fill lots of people) - to show up and grab a plate!

Yelp
I told the worker no sauce, and he confirmed that. However, the cook added sauce to the wrap and became upset, saying to wait 15 minutes. This was not great customer service.

Yelp
I had 2 orders from the Too Good To Go app. They were both 2 pcs. of chicken mandi w/ rice. I also ordered a chicken shawarma plate. - Rice - it was very flavorful. I can taste a good amount of saffron. It was also fluffy & not dried out. - Chicken Mandi - it was fall off the bones tender & moist. The spices they were marinated in surely permeated in the meat. It must have been soaked overnight. - Chicken Shawarma - has a lot more savory spices than what I've had in other restaurants. If you're not a spicy eater, watch out for the very thinly sliced spicy green peppers . I initially thought they were bell peppers because it had some until I bit into a small piece. It tasted good to me bec I like a bit of spiciness. - Hummus - it was great I definitely will be going back to try baba ghannouj, lamb aqdah, lamb chop plate, kofta kabab & meat samosa. I enjoyed what I just got so I'm very encouraged to try their other food.

Yelp
This place has all halal items on their menu which is great for those with dietary restrictions. They have street parking right outside of the business and you can call in your order ahead of time for convenience. The items are fairly priced and the service was quick and professional. I ordered the chicken shawarma plate and also a chicken shawarma wrap. Both were really tasty but I would take the wrap over the plate. They don't use pita for the wrap and it's more panini style, which I really enjoy. The plate is still a solid option. I didn't realize this place was so close by and had solid food so I'm looking forward to trying this again soon!

Yelp
This is for Too Good To Go review only. The area is very busy and minimal parking. You go to the counter and show it is for TGTG pick up. The counter will write the order on a piece of paper for the actual pick up. The portion is pretty big for the portion with a whole quarter chicken leg, rice, some lettuce and sauce. The store is packed wall to wall of products as well.

Adam A E.

Yelp
Pita breads amazing. Solid selection of middle eastern canned and dried produce. And the fresh produce is fantastic too. Don't sleep on the shawarma.

Alex F.

Yelp
Just found my new favorite local togo shawarma spot. This spicy shawarma was straight smackin. Hood eats are good eats!

Britt O.

Yelp
Listen!! The food here is so underrated. We usually get the spicy chicken mandi plates. So flavorful and juicy. Make sure to ask for the spicy one. We've also gotten some meat from the butcher and veggies from the produce section -- those were fine. Definitely don't miss the kitchen hot food offerings if you're nearby.

Phoenix A.

Yelp
Delicious and inexpensive catering. Use them frequently for events and they are always on point. We usually get chicken and rice with hummus and pita. All cooked to perfection.

Jose Manuel C.

Yelp
This place is crammed with good stuff!!!! They have a variety of goods from the Middle East and other places, bread and halal meat. I ordered a lamb shawarma wrap, a side of hummus and some Turkish cookies I enjoyed every single bite of this experience I should attend often this place is near my gym location

Tien N.

Yelp
Very non-descript and would be easy to miss if you weren't looking for it but it's absolutely worth a stop here. The wrap was very flavorful and mouth wateringly good.

Gregory F.

Yelp
This is the place I've been looking for: OFF THE RAILS LEGIT HALAL!!! Stopped in today and picked up a chicken shawarma wrap, baba ghanouch, and hummus. Each mouthful took me back to the streets of the Kurtuluş in Istanbul. The shawarma was moist and saucy inside a lightly crisped wrap and left no room in my mouth for more flavor. The baba ghanouch and hummus were sublime. This hospitality was warm and inviting. I cannot wait to go back.

Kathryn F.

Yelp
Delicious! Ugh, wish I tried this place sooner. Huge portions for a great price. I tried the lamb plate, chicken plate, and the chicken wrap. I think my favorite was the wrap - the wrap itself was soft and a little chewy and whatever red sauce they use is amazing. Great textures all around. The lamb was falling apart tender. My only qualm was that I wished they used chicken thigh instead of breast (?) because I prefer dark meat, but the flavor of the chicken itself makes up for that! The hummus is also very solid and is a great pairing with the rice plates. The sauce/salsa that comes with the plate has a nice kick too!

Yahya S.

Yelp
The best lunch I've had in a long time. Lamb & Chicken combo. The lamb was fresh & fell right off the bone, cooked to perfection. The chicken was crispy on the outside & juicy on the inside, also fell apart! Rice has raisins & spices, huge fan. The chef behind the counter was funny & humble, I can tell he has baraqah in his hands mashAllah! Highly recommend this spot if you're in the area!

Elle H.

Yelp
Unbelievably good chicken shawarma wraps! Most of the ones I've had around the bay are made with a folded wrap and filled with grilled chicken and plain veggies but this wrap came fully burrito'd in a chewy paratha-like wrap which was chewy and delicious. The chicken and veggies inside were covered in the most delicious red marinade (maybe bc I ordered it spicy?) with sauteed onions and peppers in addition to the fresh veggies. It was enormous, easily enough for two people to split. I also got a veggie platter and a side of babaganoush for the next day. The platter was great too, nothing stood out like the shawarma but it was tasty and also a giant portion. Lasted me another two meals! The babaganoush had good flavor but unfortunately was unbelievably salty, Maybe it was a fluke but if not I wouldn't order that again. The only issue I had was that I preordered it for pickup via yelp and I guess they often have a problem with yelp orders not coming through. Since they didn't receive my order I had to order again in person (not pay again though, so I guess that part works?). I wasn't in a rush so it was fine, but it ended up taking at least 15 min since there were other people ordering too, next time I'll call it in. Excellent customer service despite that, the people working there were so nice and I'll be back soon.

Ahmed H.

Yelp
Don't let facade of a market fool you into that's all this place is. There is restaurant inside that you should not pass up trying. First time here and let me tell you in 1 word when it comes to the food "WOW". Very traditional middle eastern food at its finest. Nothing fancy, just great tasting food. Chef Alzhari. That's right an actual chef displaying his skills. Seating is limited, but I noticed a lot of to go orders and pick up orders constantly being picked up The food is cooked fresh to order on the spot. Great place to let your palate explore the world

Sandra T.

Yelp
One of the best chicken shawarma I ever had. I randomly found this gem after going to an event nearby and boy was it a happy accident. Friendly staff and very flavorful food.

hc m.

Yelp
Nice ppl, good food, great selection of north-African specialty items. Will visit again if in the area!

Howie L.

Yelp
Not many options around, but it's as good as you'll get. Authentic experience - aloof service, nothing fancy home cooking, but hits the spot yumminess.

Emily G.

Yelp
Came for the food, stayed for the super kind staff and community feels inside. Very clearly a beacon for an Arabic speaking community, while serving up some bomb food. We got the chicken shawarma, had some of the rice and potatoes with yogurt, and hummus. All was delicious, but the shawarma wrap was a highlight. Exploding with flavor, chicken with the perfect amount of smoky char, luscious cucumbers and tomatoes inside, and if you ask for spicy, some flavorful diced chilis. Can't wait to come back and visit Saíd and the crew. May have them cater my housewarming.

Misha T.

Yelp
We had the chicken shawarma and lamb special plates and both were pretty great. I'm not sure what the spice difference is but the yemeni shawarma recipe tastes pretty different and is a little earthier. I'm not sure what went into the lamb special but it was some sort of stewed shank and it was pretty moist and flavorful. Speaking of flavorful, we got some cups of lamb soup while we were waiting and they were really delicious. Lamb might be might favorite meat and it was really lamb-y. It seems like half of the menu is basically unlisted daily specials so be sure to ask what they've got when you're there.

Greg M.

Yelp
Didn't explore the market beyond prepared food, but they did have one of the best chicken shawarma I have had!

Deontre M.

Yelp
chicken shawarma wrap is absolutely incredible. also some of the best baba ganoush ive had outside the mediterranean

Victor G.

Yelp
Salam Halal Market lacks nearby parking, has an food counter within. market carries halal fresh meats, spices, boxed, dried and canned food products, beverages, food products in refrigerators, counter: apptetizers, plates, mains, wraps. eats: lamb and beef shawarma wrap(7.99) -large wrap with mostly grilled meat slices, cucumbers, onions, peppers, spicy sauce. -made to order, tasted fresh, deliz. -quick, friendly service take outs: -menu listed on overhead board. -some foods scoop ready on steam table. -only negative is the lack of parking.

Nesanet T.

Yelp
This place has one of my favorite chefs and Most delicious halal food in the Bay area. They have various options, delicious combinations, clean environment. Specially with the Covid all the shelves and employees wear masks. I always see people constantly sanitizing. Shout out to salam halal market for getting us thru this hard times

Nimi M.

Yelp
Delicious food!!! We got the falafel wrap and veggie platter. The falafels were made fresh. The tzatziki and hummus were amazing as were the dolmas and side salad of lettuce/cabbage/scallions. Prices and amount of food was fantastic. This will be our go-to Mediterranean food place!

Julie R.

Yelp
Saeed is the BEST! Wonderful customer service food is amazing and a lovely cup of tea while you wait for your dinner!

Countess C.

Yelp
Very friendly staff and great food. Will definitely go again. Purchased a chicken and a lamb dinner. Very tasty. The only suggestion would be to have a sauce to go over the rice. Enjoyed the side of hummus. Love creamy hummus with Pita bread or Trader Joe's frozen Naan (Tip: heating the Naan in the toaster rather than oven is much faster ). Glad to have another Mom & Pop eatery in West Oakland.

Willl W.

Yelp
Friendly, family run middle eastern market with a take out counter attached. They have honeycomb, rose-water, and specialty groceries for middle eastern cooking.

Paola R.

Yelp
So delicious great flavor, very authentic & halal the price is very fair for the amount of food they serve. Win win

Jun K.

Yelp
Dude I really like this place! I came in to get a samosa though and they were out. I got a thing of tzatziki and it's super delicious and the store just has a distinct savory atmosphere. There's not a lot around here, but I'm happy to come check it out again. Hopefully they'll have samosas.

Jean K.

Yelp
We found this take-out market/deli through Yelp and decided to drive over to try lunch. Parking is tight; check the other side of Filbert St. and cross 7th (carefully). Despite reports of "cheerful smiling service" we received little of either. Also, important to note the staff closes down 2x day to perform their prayers, so there's a 15 min pause during these times. You can check http://irusa.org/prayer-times/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4dv88Lmv3QIVAS1pCh0gRw2tEAAYASAAEgLKCfD_BwE for the times for Zuhr (noon-ish) and Asr (late afternoon) prayer times, should you have any time constraints about dropping in. We arrived about 12:15 weekday. There were several chicken dishes but no lamb except for shank, so we were disappointed. Got one shank w/rice and yogurt. Okay, but somewhat dry and overcooked. Rice was excellent. Veggie Platter was a miss for us. We love tzatziki but this didn't match up to others we enjoy from Ikaros/Oakland, Lokanta/Pleasanton, and Khyber Pass/Dublin. Generous amount of diced cucumber but seasoning seemed flat altho a nice whisper of fresh garlic to it. Falafel is coarse-textured. We like Ba-Bite's/Oakland smoother falafel with its fresh herbs. Babaganoush and hummus were on the salty side altho eggplant made a nice addition to the fine arugula salad. No dolmas included in the platter this time. I think most customers get the wraps and sound very happy with them. If we're back this way maybe we'll give those a try instead. Prices very reasonable, and it's good to see West Oakland getting a few more businesses started.

Leona F.

Yelp
There food is hella good! It's a hidden market but their Mediterranean cuisine hits the spot every time.

Ali G.

Yelp
Authentic middle eastern cuisine prepared to perfection. Tucked inside the market is a chef cooking up mouthwatering plates that are extremely filling. I am torn. Part of me wants the place to stay as a hidden gem but the food is too good to not share for others to try. I can get my shopping for all the specialty items done while the food is served up which is quite fast! (10 to 15 mins at most) l just learned they have a website movehalal.com which is perfect for placing orders online for pick up or you can even schedule home delivery for an additional fee. Definitely will be checking it out. Price is perfect for the quality and amount of food I'm getting and the hospitality reminds me of being abroad. Seating is limited but the place is perfect for bringing home what tastes like a home cooked meal to the family on days I'm not looking to cook.

Lynn S.

Yelp
Bbq chicken special with 2 types of rice, salad, hummus, bread. Everything was excellent more then enough food for 2 meals. These guys know how to cook. Lots of great grocery items too. We are lucky to have such a great spot in the neighborhood!

Saleh S.

Yelp
From the first visit I realized that I was in a shop I could find all I needed. Salam Market & Deli where all food items, vegetables, beverages, spices, ice cream, kinds of lotions and a lot of things are inside, as well as a restaurant that offers the best Arabic cuisine by the most famous cooks. The location was perfect too... I would recommend everyone a visit Salam Market & Deli.

Yekaterina B.

Yelp
Wow! What a hidden gem! So I was super excited that a new halal market was opening near me because the meat offerings at my go-to markets are hit or miss. The gentleman at the meat counter told me to come the next day because their meat delivery was coming later on that night, so I did, and I got some very fresh lamb chops. It seems like they rotate what they get in the store and the flavor was very good, although I will opt for a different cut of meat next time. I prefer rib chops, so hopefully I can pick up some of those next time! My favorite thing about this store is their interesting grocery items. I literally wanted to buy everything in there. They have some good quality frozen fillo dough, lots of dried herbs and cooking spices. I even picked up some dried hibiscus! They also have so much cheese! I had to walk away, because if I bought one cheese, I would have to buy them all! Maybe next time! All in all, this place is great for restocking your pantry and buying fresh, halal meat. I'm still looking for a place in the East Bay that makes their own halal sausages (other than merguez), so please consider it...that would be awesome!!!

Adam A.

Yelp
Great food always b3st chef , love the lamb is daily fresh plus the chicken. He makes my favorite rice and super nice customers service. ( ).

Sophia D.

Yelp
This place is the best Mediterranean food we've had in the Bay Area. You really get your bang for your buck there because the portion sizes are amazing. The food was ridiculously good! Every single dish on the plates has so much flavor, nothing lacking! I ordered the lamb mendi and it had such amazing flavor and was falling off the bone tender. The babaganoush was a great side that I highly recommend you order it along side your meal! The medium size was basically a large. Thank you guys for an amazing Father's Day dinner. Can't wait to come back.

Salah E.

Yelp
Possibly the most undiscovered treasurer in Oakland! Could not hold myself from talking to Chef! Good quality and taste was something else! Found out that Chef Borini has years of service at high end hotel chains in Chicago and the bay. Hotels such as the four seasons. I recommended them for catering to one of my friends. After ordering for a party, he too received much praise... Price per meal hovers around $14. Which for the quantity and quality of meat and rice combinations is a steal!

Nora N.

Yelp
Really good prices, nice staff. The store has tons of items and the hot food is in the back. I got a gyro and hummus it was very good. I ate too much. Hummus was really good too. I wish they weren't out of Tabbouleh when I went in tho. :P Next time meat samosas.

Patti R.

Yelp
I ordered a chicken platter and a lamb and beef wrap delivered via GrubHub. The portion was great, food was very flavorful. If I had to pick one, I'd pick the wrap because of its flavor. I'm very glad to find this restaurant and will check out the grocery store next time!

Za R.

Yelp
Great quick halal. Really solid portion for the price. I would definitely come back here.

Qusai R.

Yelp
Best Yemeni food in the Bay Area, great service and clean place. The culture is there and there's a masjid across the street Allhamdulilah

Leila B.

Yelp
Blown away by the food! This tastes like something my mom would make. My only minor suggestions: -Include an option to select hummus or tzatziki sauce - I have a dairy allergy, so this wouldve been nice :) -The photo looks like theres a small arugula side salad, which I was excited about. Not a big deal and a personal preference, but I noticed mine was a lettuce salad. Great job. Will come back :)

Gabi C.

Yelp
Ordered on Grubhub through yelp delivery, restaurant called grubhub customer service and said I picked up my order (total bs). Grubhub called me and said that restaurant claimed I picked up my order yet it was for delivery. Restaurant cancels my order. So basically they gave my food to someone else and then cancelled my order. Further more I have to wait 3-5 days to get my money back. SCAMMERS.

Joshua J.

Yelp
Little Yemeni market hidden on 7th St near Downtown Oakland. I go there for their Halal Chicken and Lamb. They also have the most delicious hot food.

Richard R.

Yelp
I really, really wanted to try this place. I was on my way home from SF and was hungry. Parking here is a challenge, but I was able to find a spot. I walked in and there were 10+ people inside the store. Cashiers, workers behind the food counter, and a bunch of teenage kids loitering. I walked in and not a single person was wearing a mask. People were gawking at me since I was wearing a mask. Also, no one acknowledged my presence or asked for my order (which I'm glad they didn't because I didn't want to order anything after seeing the conditions). I walked out of the store without buying anything. I'm sure the food would have tasted good, but good food isn't worth getting sick for. It was obvious that the owners and their employees aren't taking this pandemic seriously.
