The Best Restaurants in East Portland | Eater Portland

"Compared to other East African cuisines like Eritrean and Ethiopian, Somali food is less commonly found in Portland restaurants. For a plate of suqaar (stewed beef, peppers, and onions) or kaykay (stir-fried strips of chicken and sabayad, flaky paratha, served with a lime-heavy, spicy green sauce), head to Salama International Bazaar, a restaurant with comfortable chairs and patterned silk tablecloths, next to a Somali mini-mall. Most entrees are served with a choice of buttery rice, spaghetti and marinara, or anjeero, a spongy flatbread traditionally made with sorghum flour." - Rebecca Roland

The Somali cuisine at this establishment is exceptional, renowned for its delectable flavors and warm hospitality. Despite its somewhat unconventional appearance, the overall dining experience was highly satisfactory. The standout dishes included goat and chicken rice, as well as fried fish.

this is the most stupid service in this store. Do people not respect for employee and also give you 10 minute to be ready food and bring you 40 minutes later I hate this store. I don’t wanna come anymore here the most stupid service.

AMAZING 🤩 AMAZING 🤩 FOOD 1. There is parking for bobtail trucks 2. Amazing food 🍲 and costumer service 3. Nice large portions 4. Prices is not bad good for the portions Cons 1. It take time for the food to be made i suggest u call and order ahead of time even though you would probably still have to wait little but. The wait is worth it cuz its just 1 lady doing all the cooking and it comes out super fresh so just be patient.....

The food here is very delicious. Lots of flavor with mild heat. I love the rice. The Samosa is really yummy. The coffee is very different. They put ginger in their coffee and it makes it spicy. It's all good. Service is a little slow, but the restaurant is still new. East African cuisine.

Let's start with what matters most: the food. Everything we had was great. We were greeted by a simple salad with an amazing dressing. It was a spicy affair with an amazing citrus and cilantro flavor. We were supplied with a pitcher of a pineapple beverage that had hints of coconut and lots of flavor. Then the main dish... I got lamb, amazing, falling-off-the-bone lamb with a wonderful rice and vegetable medley. They brought more of the same dressing as on the salads to mix with the rice. Do that. Don't think about it, just do it. My wife got a great chicken wrap that also had a flavorful and unique sauce. For dessert: bananas. Yeah, really. I only gave 4 stars because there are some basic things - like menus - that are missing. They've been here about a year, they should have some sort of menu by now. The lighting fixtures don't match locations with the tables so make sure to look in front of you when walking through. Everyone was super nice and really cared about our experience. Thanks so much and we'll definitely be back!

Friendly people and very good food! We went too early for some of the slow cooked dishes to be ready but had a delicious lamb shank and a stewed beef breakfast for a good price. They were kind enough to teach us how to brew up their awesome Somali tea at home and gave us a little of their hot sauce to go!

The staff was very friends and the food we Good as well. The place was a bit disorganized and we weren't even sure if the restaurant was open. The ambiance is minimal but we enjoyed our lunch.

Hands down the best sambusas in Portland. Friendly service. Very clean and welcoming. The portion size was perfect and the goat was tender and flavorful. I will definitely be back.
