Restaurant Review of Ilona Restaurant in Boston’s South End - Eater Boston

"Saloniki is a Greek fast-casual restaurant from James Beard Award-winning chef Jody Adams. The menu features a classic tomato and white bean soup, an 'old-world village salad' with olives, cucumbers, onions, tomatoes, and feta, a grilled haloumi appetizer, zucchini-feta fritters, tender lamb meatballs, a pork shoulder pita with spicy whipped feta, and Greek doughnuts. Eater Boston recommends the Herc pita with extra secret sauce, local Greek yogurt with lemon, and Amita fruit juices in cherry or peach." - Dana Hatic

I've been going to Saloniki three to four times a week just for their frozen yogurt—it’s that good! Gab is amazing; as soon as she sees me in line, she already knows my order. She even customizes my toppings with Dubai chocolate and pistachio, which makes it extra special. It’s the perfect combination of heavenly taste and her thoughtful service that keeps me coming back!

Google
Got the Chicken Souvlaki and Zucchini-Feta Fritters Plate, side of Fries and Halloumi Cheese (not shown), and the Sour Cherry Greek Fro-Yo (not shown). The price of the chicken souvlaki plate is steep given that you only get a single chicken skewer that was a bit cold. The salad on the side was drenched with olive oil so it didn’t taste that great, but the feta cheese was good. The zucchini-feta fritters, on the other hand, were really good. I really liked that they were pan-seared instead of fried. The pita in both plates was way too thick and bland. However, the fries, the halloumi cheese, and the sour cherry fro-yo were amazing. The dessert was the stand-out dish; the tartness of the cherries complimented the creaminess of the light fro-yo perfectly. The halloumi cheese and the fries were really good and weren’t too oily.

Google
It is a Saturday lunch. First I thought this is a sit down restaurant but actually is a fast food place. It doesn't matter as long as if the food is good. We order a Greek Feast, it supposed to have grilled lamb, the cashier said they have no more 😑 and give us more chicken, the whole plate tasted so so... We also ordered a Grilled Chicken meal, when I first check this restaurant from Google Map the pictures show it is a whole chicken meal, but the plate we received is some dry and over cooked grilled chicken strip 😖. The only thing we try and is good is the side Salads come with the meal.

Good food, quick service. I had a Grilled Chicken pita sandwich. I ordered a Dubai Chocolate Cookie too. Recommend

Google
We had the absolute best experience at this Saloniki. The food was delicious. We had some fro-yo topped with pistachios and caramel. The presentation was beautiful, the serving size was generous but not excessive, and the toppings paired well with the tart base– flavorful and not too sweet. We also took some chicken souvlaki skewers to go, and at the suggestion of Guy, the manager, reheated them in the air fryer. They were very flavorful, bite size pieces, a good mix of tender dark meat and white meat. Beyond the food, what really stood out was the service. In particular, Guy went above and beyond. He was super attentive and friendly, came and chatted with us and checked in on how we were doing. It was approaching closing time, and he was bringing in the tables and chairs from outside, but went out of his way to leave one table outside for us to sit and finish enjoying our food. It is clear that he and the rest of the staff care deeply about both serving high quality food, and providing customers with a positive dining experience. Conveniently located just across the bridge from the esplanade, this is a great spot for anyone looking to cool down and enjoy a treat or a nutritious meal after spending some hours in the sun this summer. Good food, impeccable vibes– highly recommend this Saloniki location! - Sabina and Colin

Google
⭐️Totally recommend this place to anyone nearby, very student and visitor friendly! Everything is super fresh and you can tell they care about quality. The service is always fast and the staff are very welcoming and friendly. I would definitely recommend the Village salad for a refreshing meal or one of the spreads. The fries are also super good and are made with better quality ingredients than typical. For dessert, definitely go for the frozen yogurt or a dubai chocolate cookie!

Google
The food was lukewarm, and the salad portion was tiny. One of the cucumbers had a thin hair on it. I appreciated the healthy brown rice option, but the grilled chicken skewer wasn't fresh and i could tell it had been reheated. Value is also not very good as the chicken portion was relatively small. Staff was attentive and very pleasant though.

Google
I love this Greek restaurant! I love their Watermelon Summer Salad and I just love the area at MIT! I also walk there everyday for lunch! Only if I don’t have work lol. I go here and live there. I would die for another watermelon summer salad, I just love the watermelon and cheese and lettuce that they include with the salad itself.

Yelp
Taste is nice. Portions are big enough to feel full. Prices are ok compared to Boston

Yelp
A great spot for a quick bite to eat!! We came here on a Friday evening and each got the chicken souvlaki plate. Love that it came out on a fun wooden platter! The chicken was well-seasoned and the fries were so crispy and flavorful. The pita and the Greek salad were a nice touch. Service was quick! It was nice to sit outside right on Mass Ave, though there are plenty of seats inside as well. Would definitely come back for a quick lunch or dinner!!
google avatar

Megan K.

Yelp
Fast and friendly service. Food was good for the price I just wish there was more chicken. Inside was quiet with plenty of seating. It did taste fresh and very flavorful.

Yelp
I love coming to the 181 Mass ave location on my break! The food is always so fresh and is ready in minutes which is important since I'm short on time. Also the staff is superb always really friendly, they address me by name on the walk in, and memorize my order.
google avatar

Zoe S.

Yelp
Good food and service. We got our food fairly quick. Fries were crispy and food was freshly made.

Yelp
Greek food, a little too commercialized for my taste. Quality was decent, were there during the lunch rush, took longer than expected to be served. Heart goes out to the folks behind the counter - the stress and pressure must be intense! Chairs/ tables were uncomfortable at best. Price is pretty reasonable for what you receive. We'd likely return if only to give them another chance.

Sandy M.

Yelp
We love the beverages. love the *idea* of fries in my pita sandwich. but the other day i got 2 or maybe 3 fries in my sandwich, and it was just really sloppily made. we also ordered the side of Haloumi, and got 3 slices for $7. the price has gone up and the portion size has gone down. We liked this place a lot originally, but things definitely seem to be slipping. not sure if it's just this cambridge location, but this is sad.
google avatar

Grace X.

Yelp
I've had takeout from here before, but this was my first time dining in. The takeout is good already, but the fresh food was even better. They also have seats facing the window so you can look out while you eat, it's quite nice. The pita bread here is crazy good and super fluffy, way better than any store bought or even other restaurants in my opinion. I'm vegan and the impossible meatball pita never misses. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Stephon M.

Yelp
The food here never lets you down! Chicken gyro is on point and i like that when you order extra chicken they put it on the side. Lamb meatballs are so flavorful Ambiance is just a busy lunch spot Service is actually pretty good given how stressful the lunch hour scene is. Just need to clean the countertops a bit more but overall solid place to grab some grub.
google avatar

Josh M.

Yelp
Dig it, a lot. Really great Greek options and some very satisfying salads. And the freaking zucchini fritters. I'll take those by the truckload. This is definitely a place to do online preserving and do it before the rush. It gets swamped when the line forms. Online ordering there has food on time, in and out. Not much to say for the atmosphere. It's a place to pickup and go. Great for a quick Greek fix. Kind of pricey, but it's Cambridge.
google avatar

Margot B.

Yelp
Went for the first time the other day! Very busy at lunch but the food was awesome! I had a chicken gyro and the spanikopita. Can't believe I slept on this place for so long. Will definitely order ahead next time as the wait was long. 10/10!

John H.

Yelp
Really great lunch spot. Be ready to carry out your order and eat down the street if it gets crowded.

Diasporos D.

Yelp
My experience wasn't "inaccurate" or anything other than how I perceived it. Why was the pork so damn dry? Tasted microwaved. You say there's no microwave. Then how was that cooked as bad as it was and served to me without quality control? Why were there crumbs all over the table? Why isn't the flat top working? Why is the souvlaki overcooked then if it was done on a grill? Laughable excuses. Why are there 3-4 key items missing from the menu on an average afternoon?
google avatar

Yelp
Convenient lunch spot near MIT (yay for more options besides Flour and ehh Student Center food). Last time I was around the area some years ago, I saw the shop under construction, so I finally had a chance to try it. Pitas and plates the main entrees. Got lamb meatball grilled pita. Decent portion, but more fries inside would've been nice. Tsaziki sauce kinda leaked but was caught in bag. My lunch mate also ordered the baklava crisps, which instead of traditional walnut or pistachio topping, it had sesame seed. Crunchy but not the same as traditional baklava. Too: grab to-go and sit at the Novartis public outdoor courtyard next door with tables & chairs.

Geisa C.

Yelp
When I tell you this was the best salad I've ever had. 10/10 will recommend & return! (Greek Caesar)
google avatar

Derek G.

Yelp
Fries inside a pita are cool - unless it only 5 or 6 fries total. The Jody's lemonade was nice and overwhelming. A large was a bit too many flavor crystals. Soup was good. Halloumi - decent. Nothing was so amazing That I need to come back. Mustard in a chicken souvlaki is interesting - but I never had before in a pita. It usually is tzatziki.
google avatar

Tinah H.

Yelp
Saloniki has a atmosphere and the staff is super kind. This is a great place to go for a quick bite and for good greek food. The menu has a variety of very good options including desserts like greek baklava and nutella donuts. Id also highly recommend the lamb here. Saloniki is very conveniently located for students and offers free fries for students.
google avatar

Valerie Y.

Yelp
The niko pita is definitely my favorite! The grilled chicken thighs are tender and I love how French fries are embedded in the pita. I've also tried the crispy chicken pita but found it was too fried for my taste. My friend loves it though so it definitely depends on your taste. Love the baklava donuts but you must eat them hot (they don't keep well)! The donuts are plain but the baklava crisps add such a unique sweetness, complemented by the chocolate.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Nice option for fresh fast casual fare. The souvlaki with French fries and cucumber tomato salad made for an excellent lunch, though I'd prefer if the chicken were breast meat rather than thigh meat. Iced tea is herbaceous and the peach lemonade was refreshing and not too sweet. The Mykonos salad was also good, though too salty with many briny components, including capers, olives, and feta.

Devon R.

Yelp
Very nice employees and manager! Food is great and is ready quick! I've been coming here for years :)
google avatar

Vince H.

Yelp
A bit pricey for a fast casual restaurant in my opinion. I walked in really craving a lamb gyro, but that wasn't an option so I got a Lamb Meatball pita. The pita doesn't come with fries as a side, but rather on the pita sandwich itself. The pita was fantastic, but the meat was fine. I ordered a side of fries and those were great, but the ones on the sandwich were stale and old (I ended up just taking them off and throwing them away).

Mercedes S.

Yelp
Reasonable price, healthy, good quality. You know what to expect and always delicious. Don't know how they make chicken so tender and tasty.
google avatar

Cyrus A.

Yelp
Saloniki is an awesome fast casual option in this part of Cambridge! Lots of food for a reasonable price. It was one of the last places I tried before moving out of the area, and I wish I'd discovered it much sooner. The plates are loaded with heaping portions, not only of your main dish, but also numerous sides that are all really delicious and filling. I know there's a CAVA nearby, but if you're really hungry and want your buck to travel farther for delicious Greek food, Saloniki is the right move!
google avatar

Yelp
Great Greek food! I personally will choose a local spot, but this is great and fresh as welll. Nothing to complain -

Yelp
Went and ate there today for lunch with my mom and sister before sending my sister back to MIT. My mom and sister got the grilled chicken platter, some salad on it and as well as with the rice. They both said it tasted very good and yummy! I ordered, tried and got the pork shoulder (herc pita) and it tasted really good, delicious, tangy and saucy! We definitely appreciate their fast and quick service that it didn't take long to be served. Finally, we would definitely come and eat there next time! :)

Yelp
Food - 4 Service - 3 Ambiance - 4 Cleanliness - 3 I quite enjoyed the food here. I got the spicy lamb meatball pita. It was not spicy at all but it was good! The vibe in the restaurant was chill with people chatting or working. It had good lighting and plenty of seatings. Wouldn't mind coming again for a quick and cheap lunch or take out.

Yelp
We've eaten at Saloniki's branch in Harvard Square and Beacon Hill/Government Center, and had a GREAT meals there. This was our first time at their MIT/Central location, and like the others, it was A+. We ordered the Chicken Souvlaki Double Classic Meal and the Impossible Meatball Meal. I've had impossible burgers before and was never impressed, but in this case I was surprised at how tasty the Impossible Meatball was. The spicing was superb! The chicken souvlaki was moist and tender, perfectly spiced. The brown rice was chewy and tasty, the pitas tasted like they were made minutes ago. And how do they make the fries so addictive? Yum!!!
google avatar

Oznur B.

Yelp
We got the zucchini platter substituted brown rice with fries. The guy at the register was so attentive. The platter was tasty and the lemon soda was yummy. I recommend this place for lunch.

Rachel K.

Yelp
Good fast-casual Greek food, close to the MIT campus. I particularly like the lamb meatballs and zucchini fritters. The service is usually pretty quick, especially considering how popular it is during lunchtime. Pro tip: they offer free fries with a student ID, it keeps my friends and I coming back!
google avatar

Jenny T.

Yelp
Definitely not the best Greek food I've had. Everything was really heavy, greasy, and overall tasted very average. Nothing stood out to me, and I don't think I'd come back again. There are better Greek places in Boston for sure.
google avatar

Iris P.

Yelp
i'm a huge sucker for greek food and the mykonos salad didn't disappoint. at first i was a bit wary that i was paying $15 for a salad, but then i got a ginormous, heavy box and when i opened it, it was loaded with fresh veg, grilled chicken, and crumbled feta. huge portion size, so i had plenty of leftovers. i don't know what it is about the olives but they were dang scrumptious

Allyson G.

Yelp
I loved the Mykonos Salad with zucchini fritters and the limeade I got. The fries and pita I sampled were also great.! Lots of vegetarian-friendly options. Spacious, neat, and cozy dining room. I'll be back!

Sarah M.

Yelp
Delicious, fresh salad! Helpful about ingredients and knowledgeable about allergies. Space is clean and bright.

M B.

Yelp
Awesome Greek food. We ordered the zucchini fritter pita and it was so good! Must try.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times and really like the interior. It's a fast-casual restaurant with plenty of good lighting if you, like me, love to take pictures of your food. I don't like waiting in line so last time, I ordered online and it was a very smooth experience. I was not a fan of my impossible meatball pita, though. The halloumi was good and I would definitely order it again. Those items combined were a very big lunch for me, so if I go again I would just get a pita or a salad with no sides, or just a side with no entree. Very accessible and conveniently located.
google avatar

Damien S.

Yelp
Oh Herc, fill me up. Braised honey-garlic Maine pork shoulder, spiced whipped feta, Saloniki's secret sauce, some roughage, tom-onion, not-so-crisp fries and slaw on a pita they make throughout the day. It's a $9 meal-unto-itself only made better with a big, fat Greek iced tea (black with mint, orange and lemongrass!) and the end game of skinny baklava crisps or some dope loukamades ($4). Quality varies throughout the day, which is a bummer crap shoot, but even at 50%, the flavorful, well-seasoned offerings at Saloniki. Easy, meaty, Greeky. Bring it on!
google avatar

Yelp
I had noticed Saloniki on my last trip to Cambridge, but this trip got to finally check out the food. That part of Cambridge has needed more Mediterranean options, so I'm glad Saloniki filled that niche. The restaurant is in the first floor of the new Maya Lin building (aka the one with holes) on Mass Ave. near MIT. A friend and I got take out and since she was the one to pick up, I didn't actually see the interior of the place or do the ordering myself. Just from the online menu, though, I could tell they had some traditional and modern twists on classic Greek offerings. I got the Mt. Olympus salad, with grilled chicken on a varied bed of greens. Since I passed on the tomatoes and feta, they loaded on the other ingredients -- something not all restaurants do, so I appreciated having a full salad. The chicken was very flavorful and tender. Portion-wise, I could have polished it off and been pretty full. My friend hadn't previously liked what she got at Saloniki, but this time really enjoyed the George (spicy lamb meatballs). This place might be a little hard to navigate if you are dairy free or need to avoid nightshade plants ( tomato, eggplant, bell peppers, and potatoes galore). But I was able to find some options, and there are plenty of things to eat if you're gluten free. Not super cheap, but a good lunch or fast dinner option. Next time I'll check out the actual brick and mortar and report back.

Yelp
I came here after an event at MIT with a coworker. She was raving about the lamb patties so I was looking forward to trying them. I was greeted by a very friendly, helpful staff including Kobie the manager! Since it was my first time, he talked me through the various meal options. He even helped me understand which meals were lighter and which were more hearty like the chicken and beef bowls. Since this was my first dinner (yes I had plans for a second a few hours later) I chose the George plate, especially since it contained the lamb patties my coworker raved about so much. The portion was the perfect portion for a first dinner, even satisfying enough to have been an only dinner (if you are not super hungry). Everything was very fresh!!! The spicy slaw and zesty garlic yogurt were my favorite part of the dish! The fries were a nice teaser (I heard students get free fries?? If so I'm jealous)! Also the lamb patties lived up to the hype (there are 2 in the George plate)! I also had the opportunity to try the loukoumades thanks to Kobie!!! I tried the them topped with Nutella and Baklava, and also cinnamon with honey. Imagine a funnel cake..... but better!!!! They were a little bit chewier than a funnel cake and soooooo good!!!! Next time I am in the area I will be back for sure!!!

Yelp
Opa! After trying (and loving) the original Saloniki in Fenway, I was stoked to check out the new Cambridge spot, located conveniently (and dangerously) on my way home from work. The layout is quite different from Fenway, with the food assembly line and cash register at the far side of the restaurant. This provides a more open area for seating (which was ample during Tuesday dinnertime) and plenty of room for an orderly line to form inside (much appreciated during Boston winter). The menu isn't too overwhelming, and I'm convinced that you can't go wrong. All of the proteins are unique and flavorful and the toppings tasty and fresh. I was eyeing The George since I'd had such a good time with him previously, but I decided to do things differently and build my own salad. I chose half lamb meatballs/half zucchini feta fritters for my protein, and I regret nothing. With a leafy green base practically overflowing from the bowl, the staff expertly arranged my desired selections atop the ever-growing mound. Eggplant, feta, cucumbers, tomatoes, and more! There were definitely a few points where I was convinced all of the deliciousness would topple like ancient Greek ruins. But no! The Herculean staff know their stuff, and my salad was certainly a sight to behold. The salad with lamb is $9, and the one with zucchini fritters is $8, so my Grecian creation came out to an easy $8.50. BUT! When you pay with the LevelUp app for the first time, you get $3 off! SO I got a gargantuan salad (which lasted me 2 meals) for $5 and change. I almost couldn't believe it. The Greek fries are also so good. My pita-eating dining partner and I shared an order, which was brought to our table piping hot with spices and cheese on top. The perfect, less-healthy accompaniment to a fresh salad. Saloniki is a fresh, fast, affordable, and flavorful addition to the 'hood. Thanks for bringing a bit of Greece to Cambridge!

Yelp
I've been coming here since Oct 2020 and have been eating here about 1x/week. They are consistently delicious. Front counter is always friendly and patiently helpful with menu selection. I've had all the plate options, kebabs and this time for this review I had the salad with grilled chicken and moussaka. Wow I was surprised by the moussaka, could be my new favorite. The salad was very fresh and balanced. Don't overlook the dessert options: the house made baklava crisps, and the house made Greek yogurt with lemon. The setting is very clean and presentable with nicely appointed decor. Lots of detail was put in place on this ideal mass ave corner location.
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
Love this spot! Recently started going on my lunch breaks and cannot get enough. The fried chicken one is my favorite! Make sure to specify if you do want to add fries inside.

Jay C.

Yelp
Great Greek and must try the fro yo. Balaclava and Nutella toppings. Great lunch outing at MIT. Meals don't come with fries but they are in the pita wrap
google avatar

Jenny F.

Yelp
Really nice vibes and tasty food! Had a much better experience here than at the one near MIT. With the attached bar and lovely vines in this venue, one might even think they had transported far away from the Cambridge cold... It's not Mykonos, but Saloniki is a great place to meet someone you don't hate for lunch to properly enjoy yourself. The regular souvlaki sandwich will get you quite full for like $5-6 -- quite a steal in Harvard Square. I wish they sold more individual kebabs (not a great value at $4/ea, might as well just get the sandwich). Some people seem to have complained about some of the meat but I had the chicken and it was flavorful, warm, and quite delicious. The Greek fries are free for students (!!!) and so good with tzatziki sauce. The nutella and baclava loukoumades tastes like warm, nutella-slathered donut holes that I should not be having but the portion is gigantic and I can't stop /sob/ The staff is extremely attentive and very friendly. Shout out to Jeff who was extremely helpful in deciding what to order and introducing me to loukoumades.

Darius S.

Yelp
The food is decent. Student fries are a good deal, but the meat dishes are often too salty. The online order system sometimes underestimates the waiting time significantly. The app told me to pick up my order at 12:41 but I didn't get my food until 1.
google avatar

Efraim S.

Yelp
Solid and cheap eats. Some locations are a bit fancier and have cocktails others are more of a quick bite type of place. They have vegetarian options. My favorite thing to eat there is the frozen yogurt which is incredible and comes with two toppings(not generous on toppings).

Ally W.

Yelp
nice place to grab a meal with friends and/or get work done. looks small but was actually quite filling!
google avatar

Yelp
**Updated Review** I originally came to Saloniki and left disappointed after slightly rude employees seemingly; however, that did not repeat itself during my second visit! The employees were friendly, helpful and patient. I ordered the Souvlaki plate with chicken and a side of feta! The presentation and taste were great, and there was more than enough feta as a side! The chicken skewer had a nice char, and seemingly used the breast while I'm not sure that the other chicken dishes (such as the Niko) do. I will definitely now come back when in the area. Props to the company on valuing customer's feedback! Pita is a bit too chewy for my liking, but I enjoyed the other aspects!

Yelp
Amazing flavors come out of this place. I've been to two locations and was not disappointed I also love using the app.

Yelp
Fast-casual greek food, you say? Yes, please! We found this place looking for lunch at an off-time after our whale watching excursion. We were planning to be in Cambridge, so stopped in here before setting off to explore the town. I had looked it up on Yelp beforehand, so I was familiar with the menu and how to order somewhat - and thank goodness I had! There was only the "traditional plates" sign hanging up in the restaurant, there was no menus to be found!! I pulled up the Yelp app to check out the different types of proteins, sauces, toppings, etc. After a initial awkward start - we ordered a plate to share. I opted for all the sauces to try, all of them more delicious than the next - my favorite being spicy whipped feta. We had (at Yelper recommendation) ordered half chicken and half zucchini fritter for protein, which was the best decision - both were delightful and the zucchini left me wishing we had more! We topped it with cucumbers (which I think had been pickled?), tomatoes, onions, french fries, and feta. Unfortunately, no olives, because the husband doesn't like them, *sigh*. The chicken was great - super flavorful and tender. The rice was yummy too, perfectly soft and slightly sticky! The sauces were absolutely killer - I could probably have used more - but I feel like I ALWAYS feel that way about sauces with greek food; they're just so good! The zucchini fritter was amazing. It tasted so familiar to something I used to eat in Spain all the time - super flavorful with dill (?), onions, and zucchini - the preparation was also on point because they managed to stay slightly crispy/crunchy without getting soggy! French fries were good - I kinda forgot about those guys, and I have a hunch my husband ate them all! Overall, a solid "plate" and so much more enjoyable than other fast-causal made-to-order type places! Only two things I wasn't super impressed with: - No menus, and despite our clearly confused appearance, no offer to help us. - For some reason, our sauce choice was requested first - so they put sauces directly onto the plate, before all the ingredients - still so confused why this isn't done last?! I would absolutely come back for lunch again and again, if I lived in the area. Such a shame - Saloniki Greek, come to Jersey!!
