"We've accepted the challenge of hitting Queens more often in 2K14, and Salt & Fat was at the top of our Hit List. Salt & Fat's reputation precedes it. Our trusted community on Twitter has been urging us to hit this place forever, and, for what it's worth, it was the only Sunnyside restaurant to make the Michelin Guide's "Bib Gourmand" list. Also, the name is awesome. Salt and fat - our bodies prefer it to moisturizer. We've all seen the Salt & Fat movie before. A catchy name inside a pig logo, serving up a swine-centric menu with a side of Asian flair. In Manhattan and Brooklyn, they're a dime a dozen, but out in Queens, not so much. The difference between dining at a hot restaurant in Manhattan and a hot restaurant in Sunnyside is like night and day. Salt & Fat is easily the coolest restaurant in a five mile radius, and even though there's a no reservation policy, you can walk in and get a table with zero issue during prime time. They greet you with free bacon popcorn, drink prices aren't insulting, and you can eat like kings and queens for under $50 a head. They're also the only restaurant we've ever been to that serves Thousand Island dressing with everything. Salt & Fat doesn't go out of their way to impress with a slick design like the others either. Instead, what you have is a restaurant that was probably once a used DVD store, and all they did to the space was add a kitchen and a bunch of pig paraphernalia. The orange lighting and stained drop ceilings remain, and make Salt & Fat feel more like a Chinatown dive than a any place a "gourmand" would dine. God, we hate that word. The truth is, we wanted to love Salt & Fat more than we actually did. Every dish on the menu reads like a carnivore's delight, and while some items are incredible, like the BLT buns and the crispy pork trotter, others, like the pork belly and the fried chicken, completely miss the mark. If we lived in the neighborhood, we'd certainly be eating here all the time. However, we can't suggest making a specific trip out here on the 7-train just to eat another pork bun and lots of Thousand Island dressing. Food Rundown “Shaved” Hudson Valley Foie Gras We love a good shaved foie dish, and this one looked good on paper. The foie was excellent and the bacon brittle and cinnamon were a nice touch, but the mandarin oranges tasted like they were from a can, which is a problem. Scallops Impressive scallop presentation and a ridiculous roasted carrot puree with truffled corn salsa and capers. The scallops got a little charred on the outside, but that didn't affect the insides, which were firm, soft, and sweet all at the same time. Definitely order it. Korean BBQ Wraps This was a big winner. Marinated hanger steak in a miso sauce with pickled daikon in a crisp butter lettuce wrap. We could have eaten four of these each. BLT Buns Dare we say we've been a little bunned out from too many trips to Ippudo lately, but for some reason we weren't overly excited to eat these. That quickly changed upon first bite. The BLT buns from Salt & Fat are among the best pork buns in the game. Braised, soft bacon belly on a soft boa with just the right amount of bun and, of course, Thousand Island dressing billed as "spicy mayo." The "spicy mayo" is actually the key to this bun, too. Crispy Berkshire Pork Trotter Our favorite dish of the night. A salad of pigs feet is molded into a fried oval and topped with a slow cooked egg. It's super rich, but not too heavy or swine-tasting, which is nice. And of course it comes with "spicy mayo"/Thousand Island. Roasted Berkshire Pork Belly Judging by the amount of pig present on the Salt & Fat menu, we assumed the pork belly was going to be the crown jewel of the menu. Not so much. It certainly represented the "fat" portion of the menu though, as their belly was half chewy blubber, and also had a thick stickiness to it that was unappetizing and hard to get over. Let's just say we didn't go back for a second bite on this one. Fried Chicken The fried chicken was rough. The skin was filmy and tasted like a big uncooked cluster of breadcrumbs, which really made the chicken borderline inedible. The best part of this dish was that it was the "herb ranch" dressing for dunking purposes, aka Thousand Island. Long Island Duck Breast We loved the duck entree. A huge portion of rare cooked quack, accompanied by excellent compliments in butter lychee, grilled frisée and sweet & sour jus. Get some. Dessert We tried all three, the Lychee Panna Cotta with Yuzu Buttermilk Sorbet, the Rice Krispies Treats with Marshmallow Ice Cream and the Spiced Carrot Cake with White Chocolate Ice Cream and none of them were particularly memorable. The yuzu buttermilk ice cream was our favorite, but we wouldn't bother ordering any of these again." - Andrew Steinthal

This restaurant is known for their Korea/New American food. The bacon infused complimentary popcorn is a must try. All the plates are on the small side so I recommend getting a few dishes to share as it's more tapas style. I've tried their mussels which is one of my favorites. The sauce it comes with works really well with dipping with the bread it comes with. Their salad is also really good. I also enjoy their rice krispies dessert with ice-cream.

The food is delicious and innovative. The service is welcoming and friendly. The ambiance could be better but not a deal breaker. Salt & Fat is located conveniently across the street from the 7 train stop and not too far from Manhattan. There's nothing much else to do in the neighborhood from what I saw but it was also around 10pm so a lot of the surrounding stores were closed. The starter popcorn wasn't fresh or hot so it was a bit cold and soaked with the duck fat. It might be better if you came earlier. But it's a small detail. My only comment is that the menu overdoes it on the fat... this isn't a restaurant for gluttony and some fat is good on dishes but at some point, it seems to try just a bit too hard. Nonetheless, the food was wonderful and the plating is beautiful.

I went to Salt & Fat for a small fixe prix menu during Queens restaurant week. The theme seems to be at least in part uncommon flavor combinations, but instead of pushing the envelope, they seem to settle for easy options, such as fruits with a sour sauce, which was a thing both in the appetizer and the dessert. The pork buns had very thick layers of fat. The food was fine, but nothing memorable, and the portions were on the small side for the price. The service was friendly and helpful. I wouldn't recommend this place for anyone staying in Manhattan, but Queens locals may want to check it out.

We did not understand the menu the first time we read it, so we asked for descriptions and the waitress was super nice and kind explaining to us the options. We tried the fish in an avocado mouse mattress, which was delicious. Also the pork shoulder sandwiches, 3 small looking portions that are in fact really full filing, are a great appetizer. As dessert we have the ice cream and vanilla mouse. On weekends the place is very busy and they do not take reservations, besides this, we were seated within 5 minutes in a friday night and the whole service was very fast. The ambiance is very relax and easy going.

I really liked this place. The dishes are all small plates, which lets you try a nice variety of food. I went here with six people, ordered 90% of the menu, and found almost every single one fantastic. Quick tip- the menu is ordered with smaller/less expensive dishes at the top and larger dishes towards the bottom. The prices are fairly reasonable, the decor was modern & clean, the lightning dim & cozy.

Prefect for adult date night I have to say, I'm impressed with the decor and service. The popcorn is as promised and not to be missed. The food is flavorful and presented well beyond for what I expected for the area. Korean barbeque is flavorful and I wanted more of the yellowtail tartar, which leads me wanted a little more in the portions but this is what makes it a perfect adult date night location, great amount and not a stuff whale at the end of the meal. Also as a bonus, the floor layout is open, which is a thumbs up in my book.

I love salt & fat! It is such an unnoticeable restaurant in Sunnyside that opens only during dinner. I came here merely for the bacon fat popcorn and I was truly impressed. A place like this in the city will mean long line, high price and hipster crowd. On the contrary, it is very cozy, relaxed and intimate here. We tried many dishes here and I love everything we got. Isn't that great? This is a small-mid portion style so make sure you order a little more than the number of people to get enough food. Now, my favorite is their duck. It is so fatty and tender I think I can eat it by myself. The pork belly is also a winner, another fatty and tender dish. The pork bun comes in 3 and is a great delight. Their sauce is delicious. The oxtail terrine is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Finally the apple prosciutto salad is refreshing and nice. We ended our dinner with all of their desserts. They are all quite simple but sweet. The rice crispy with ice cream is very good and so is the panna cotta with ice cream. If you love ice cream, got to try their Thai Ice Tea flavor among others. Oh and I forgot to mention the FREE bacon fat popcorn. It is absolutely FATTY, savory and awesome!

This place is terrible. A tapas style cuisine should have portion sizes you are able to share. Also they should offer dishes that are normally shared. I ordered a salmon and my girlfriend ordered a pork chop. Who shares those types of dishes on a date?? When they came out with the salmom and I asked where the pork chop was it hadn't even been put to cook yet because we were expected to share the salmon first. The waiters have no uniforms and look extremely sloppy. My girlfriend and I decided to leave before the pork chop came out because everything was taking so long. Completely over priced and I will never be back. Queens Blvd is full of many more restaurants worth your time and money.
