20 of Chicago’s Most Beloved Closed Diners

"Sealed into the annals of history by comedian John Mulaney, the Salt & Pepper Diner began its reign in 1965 on Lincoln avenue and went on to earn generations of fans over many decades with its milkshakes, burgers, and unironically retro vibe. The original diner closed in 2013 but a Wrigleyville outpost remained until 2016, when it was displaced by a massive redevelopment project that brought about multiple restaurant closures." - Naomi Waxman, Ashok Selvam

I’m from the UK and I love John Mulaney,, so of course when I was in Chicago I had to come here,, and honestly I thought they would have removed the jukebox because of that incident,, but I felt I had to reminisce the old days,,and of course I played What’s New Pussycat 7 times,, with Its Not Unusual bang in the middle. Anyways the staff were lovely and the food was delicious.

Salt & Pepper is an old-style that does it right every time! The food hits the spot, the decor and atmosphere make you feel right at home, and the service is top notch. Eat there once, and you will be hooked!

Wanted to take my husband here for breakfast to show him the place I used to go as kid/teenager. Unfortunately, they’re out of business and the building is up for sale 😢 SO BUMMED!!!

Really hit or miss on the hours, as I've come by a few times and found them closed during normal meal times - but they have a great sloppy joes and tater tots and a full menu of solid diner dishes.

It's a wonderful family restaurant in Chicago, which means it caters mostly to teenagers and homeless schizophrenics
