Yelp
The Salt & Straw empire just keeps growing and growing thanks to their second location in the city of San Francisco and one in a neighborhood that truly knows what a delicious sweet treat really means. Located on the corner of Hayes and Laguna Streets in what is still a relatively new condominium complex in the trendy Hayes Valley neighborhood, Salt & Straw blends perfectly in a neighborhood that has a variety of shops, restaurants and even other ice cream shops that are thriving thanks to the theatre area being mere blocks away. Also adding to the neighborhood's overall pastiche is Salt & Straw's well-known exotic seasonal ice cream flavors made with locally sourced ingredients from their home state of Oregon which is churned to perfection thanks to their team's ability to max out the ice cream's butterfat content which gives their ice cream a more lush texture. Their ice cream just tastes a little different, and thanks to the continually rotating menu, it keeps both loyal and new customers coming back for more and more!
I have previously been to Salt & Straw's other location on the peninsula in the Bay Area region and have walked around the Hayes Valley neighborhood a number of times looking for a sweet treat post shopping or dining. Thankfully my trusty Yelp app helped alert me to this second location in the city being open one sunny weekend afternoon that I happen to be running errands in the neighborhood, and what better way to satiate my sweet craving than to see what Salt & Straw had to offer on this particular visit. Walking in, I was surprised to see a lack of any customers, as practically all of the other locations that I have been to have been packed with ice cream lovers waiting to get their free samples with their metal spoons that customers conveniently return through a hole in their countertop. My first visit here occurred around the Halloween season, the Limited Edition Flavors had a number of options that combined various candy flavors and their slow-churned ice cream. After sampling a few flavors, I determined that their Great Candycopia which was made with salted butterscotch ice cream mixed with homemade Kit Kats, Reeses, Snickers, and Health Bar pieces. It was the butterscotch flavor that always does it for me with its rich and sweet creaminess that comes with every lick and bite, when combined with some of my favorite candy treats, it makes for the perfect flavor profile.
Of course no visit to Salt & Straw goes without a return visit, especially when there was no line the first time I ventured here, so I was back months later this time with friends after enjoying a dinner nearby. The Limited Edition Flavors menu now had more flavors geared towards the winter season in which we arrived, and I was able to try both their Marionberry Oatmeal Cobbler and Coconut Cake & Pineapple Jam flavors. There was something about a third flavor, their Bananas Foster with Candied Pecans, whose goal is to recreate a signature flavor of New Orleans by simmering ripe bananas, dark rum, brown sugar, and spices into a rich caramel. After being drizzled into a banana-infused coconut cream and mixing in crunchy bites of candied pecans helped to add a touch of nutty bitterness. The perfect scoop of ice cream on a sugar cone for the still reasonable price of $6.75 per scoop which shows that even with the price of ingredients going up exponentially even since my last visit Salt & Straw is keeping things grounded with their special ice cream scoops made with real ingredients and earnestness. Here's to hoping that their expansion continues throughout the Bay Area for many more years to come!
