"Salty Cargo is a fast-casual restaurant focused on Hawaiian-Asian dishes. It is run by chefs and co-owners Michael Carranza and John Gocong, both Uchi alums. It is located within the food court of Hana World Market and offers takeout, delivery, and dine-in services. The menu features Hawaiian-style pork ribs, seasonal whole fried fish, huli-huli halibut, a tori katsu sandwich, and garlic butter firecracker shrimp." - Nadia Chaudhury

"Salty Cargo, in the Hana World Market food court in North Austin, describes themselves as a restaurant with an Asian twist on Hawaiian staples - and they do just that. On the menu you’ll find things like a tori katsu sando and heiehi moa wings with kimchi. Our favorite is the O’Hana Style fried fish. It was a whole snapper in our case - so prices will vary a bit - fried and served with a bowl of sweet chili sauce that’s meant to be poured over the fish right before eating. And they serve it with rice, mint, cilantro, red onions, kimchi, and butter lettuce, so you can turn every bite into a little lettuce wrap." - Nicolai McCrary

I would not have imagine such an amazing experience from a food court. After hearing all the raving and recommendations from friends,TikToks, food blogs, I was convinced to stop by. I have two emotions going through me, first, sadness that i have missed the opportunity to have eaten at the salty cargo for the 3 years I have lived here and second, excited that I know about it and can come back often because I’m not too far! I ordered the whole fried fish. It’s huge! Comes with rice, butter lettuce, thinly sliced onions, cilantro, macaroni salad and an amazing made-in-house Sambal. It could have easily fed two people but I was greedy and had two meals from it. The fish was simple, seemed like a little salt and pepper, and perfectly fried. I made little lettuce wraps with all the herbs and gave it a drizzle of lime and some of the sambal. It gave me memories of home. The bf got the fried pork sandwich which I would have eaten/shared with him too but I was too full from gorging myself with fish. I’m surprised that there aren’t more reviews here about these guys. I’m converted and I’ll be back!

Ate at the Salty Cargo food truck outside of Celis Brewery. Was blown away! Had the mac and ribs. Great portions, stunning flavors. Everything was cooked with care and tasted so fresh. I can't wait to go to the brick-and-moiter location!

I ordered the loko moco special and it was, no joke, probably one of the best things I've ever eaten. Loco moco is usually made with a hamburger patty, but these crazy folks threw a slow cooked beef rib in there instead. The unspeakable euphoria I felt eating macaroni salad, rice, super rich beef all topped with a sunny fried egg. Ugh. And they had like a fresh pepper, basil, onion vinaigrette that cut through all the richness. Man. It was a thing. Yeah.

Pretty much sampled the entire menu, was not disappointed with any of the dishes. Will return again and again!

I like coming to Hana World for quick groceries. Even happier now that there are more take out options I can pick up on the way out. Salty Cargo has a colorful and creative menu. Order the whole fried fish. Trust me. Now I can’t wait to try every other dish.

This place is a hidden gem! Like its 2 other neighbors in this secret food court, the food is absolutely delicious and authentic. We had the poke and the grilled fish and it was truly fingerlicking good. I heard that they now opened a food truck in north Austin as well and will try it very soon as the experience here was amazing. I would say that the only thing I regret is the opening hours, it's very confusing. There's plenty of time where we wanted to go there but ended ordering next door because they were closed. Overall, highly recommend!

My son ordered the Ohana fried fish and I ordered the Hawaiian ribs. The Ohana fried fish was delicious and the Ribs were tasty and fell off the bone tender. We will more than likely return again to try some of their other menu items.

Why passion projects deliver. It’s not the type of place you just randomly stroll into. You hear about it, and you’re glad you did. It’s well worth the drive up north. I was greeted by the owner with a warm welcome, a friendly neighborhood type vibe. He took me through the menu and I decided on the Hawaiian Pork Ribs and Fried Fish. I thought both dishes delivered in taste, quantity, quality, and novelty. The dishes aren’t just Hawaiian, they’re a culmination of Asian influence (Korean, Philippino, etc.) with a curation and intentionality coming from a former Uchi/Uchiko Chef. Oddly enough, the macaroni salad had the most impactful flavor to me because of this distinct garlic flavor that I’ve had only while dining on specific Mediterranean dishes. The owner, John, shared his story and how this passion project came about. When you finish your meal, you’re grateful that chefs like him have enough financial support to pursue a spin-off from what some would regard as a high point in their career. However, when you try their new project, you realize they have much more to offer than their former and that’s what makes this place special.
