The 8 Best Restaurants In Civic Center - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"This small takeout spot on Van Ness makes some of our favorite sandwiches in the city. All 15 options are gargantuan, but our go-to is the Glorious Bastard stuffed with turkey, ham, and a garlicky mayo that should be a required condiment at every restaurant. If you’re an early riser, swing by for their simple egg-and-cheese breakfast sandwich that we love, yet again, for the mayo—this one made with chipotle and maple syrup. Seating’s limited, but Civic Center Plaza is just a few blocks away." - julia chen 1, patrick wong

The Best Sandwich Spots In San Francisco - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Salty’s gargantuan sandwiches—about the size of a Costco shampoo bottle—will keep you full until your next circadian rhythm resets. There’s no wrong choice, but the Glorious Bastard, layered with turkey, ham, and garlic mayo, is our favorite. Or, stop by before the lunch rush and try their breakfast sandwich. It doesn’t have a fun name, but it’s delicious and simple with just egg, cheese, and a lot of chipotle-maple mayo." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez, patrick wong

10 out of 10. Highly recommend no matter whether you’re just grabbing something quick to go or you wanna dine-in for a bit (like I did). Service was great and the sandwich was even better. I just randomly stopped in for the first time and the guy at the counter was very patient and didn’t rush me to order. Even suggested their best seller. The sandwich itself was very meaty and the bread was perfect. Better than Subway, Jersey Mikes, Firehouse, etc. Gave a three star for atmosphere because well… there is no atmosphere. You go in, you get your sandwich, and if you want to eat in… there may or may not be a seat for you. Simple, in my opinion.

Google
It was between Salty’s and another place for lunch and we picked Salty’s because the pictures of their sandwiches + the overall menu just looked better and we were not disappointed!! I tried the Ricky Ricardo without jalapeños and subbed a different bread. One of the best Cubans I’ve had! Extremely saucy so definitely a little messy, but sooo tasty. The sandwiches are huge and mine cost only $15 which I find very fair considering it’s in SF! The guy at the register was nice as well. If you plan to eat there it is a little small of a seating area; if you’re local you’d probably enjoy it more as takeout.

Google
The two sandwiches that I tried were tremendous I tell you. The #2 (Bonjorno) has a subtle heat, which gives it a nice kick to it and would be my go-to sandwich as everything blends in together. The #8 (InstaCran) that bread locks all the flavor without getting soggy, has a satisfying crunch to it, and the jam is nice & sweet. I enjoyed the atmosphere as I ate and would highly recommend you try this place as they had some quality sandwiches that you can't miss out on.

Google
Very nice cup of tea (I’m from UK, so naturally know a good brew). We had two teas, with a BLT Sandwich and a bacon with cream cheese bagel. Friendly staff, and pet friendly cafe. Will definitely be back if we come to SF again

Google
The Glorious Bastard was flavorful and had multiple textures giving it a great mouth feel: the bread was firm but not chewy, the cheese and turkey was soft, the bacon was crispy. And the cashier is very friendly and engaging. Glad I stopped by!

Google
Cuban sandwich was one of the best I’ve ever had , large portions and great spice level. Breakfast sandwich was also fantastic , chipotle maple mayo was life changing. Will be back next time I’m in Frisco ;)

Google
We had an awesome roastbeef sandwich there! They were doing it fast and it was nicely toasted and wrapped in paper. The place is small, but has a few tables to sit down and eat. The owner even made space for a customer to eat more comfortably when we were there, which was nice. They also have a selection of chips to try.

Google
MUST TRY FOR BREAKFAST OR LUNCH!!! This place was so good. The bfast sandwich with bacon and the maple chipotle sauce was very good. Staff was polite, helpful, and patient with a first time customer. Location was clean with ample seating. Very easy to find and well located. If you are around the federal courthouse and looking for quick, good food, this is a must try!!!

Yelp
Wow! By far the best vegan sandwich I've ever had! I tried the Habibi sandwich since I'm currently fasting for Orthodox Lent, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were perfect, and you can tell they use high quality ingredients. On top of that, the service was amazing! I placed my order over the phone, and I really appreciated the time they took to make sure my sandwich was just right for me. Salty's is a hidden gem I work and live in the neighborhood and had no idea it was here! I can't wait to come back and try another sandwich soon. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Overall rating: 4/5 Stopped by around 9:30am on a Wednesday and was warmly greeted by the friendly staff. Around that time, the shop was calm and not very busy. There are a few tables inside if you're interested to eat there. It was our first time and the worker was very helpful and patient, assisting us to pick our sandwich. We ended up ordering the Glorious Bastard - the most popular sandwich item on their menu. It was a solid sandwich. I really liked the sauce in it. But outside from that, everything else was pretty standard. Would I come back? Yes, but probably only if I'm around the area Would I recommend this place? Yes

Yelp
Friendly helpful staff, interesting menu with a lot of variety, and I had my sandwich in my hand in less than two minutes!
google avatar

Yelp
Very simple sandwich shop - a little bit pricy but really big portion size. I got their signature glorious bastard and liked how it had a good amount of sauce.

Yelp
Solid spot for tasty not too Salty samiches! I ordered the chicken salad Sammy w errrting... they had me at bacon ! Samich was assembled quickly and grabbed some Voodoo chips too. Chicken was moist, tasty and messy, all the ingredients merged together into a harmony of flavors. I was only going to eat half but was sooo good I kept eating and then there was none... I may try the sliced sourdough next sammy. Overall a nice clean samich spot that gets you in n out like the burger!

Yelp
So delicious! I love a good sandwhich and this was just a 10 minute walk from my hotel. I had the Glorious Bastard and it was soo good, I went back the next day for another one and ordered it with extra pickled onions, game changer. Looking forward to being back and trying the pastrami!

Yelp
The food is actually incredible, breakfast sandwiches had my mouth watering. Very quick on the service and everyone is so nice, very good in n out place when you're rushing in the mornings. This being said there are some seats inside and it's great to take a moment to relax in the mornings. ALSO THE PRICE IS INCREDIBLE FOR THE SIZE.

Yelp
I've had Salty's bookmarked on Google Maps but haven't made the time to go or wasn't in the mood for a sandwich when I was in the neighborhood until recently. Owner is very friendly. Pretty busy around 2pm on a Friday afternoon. I was admiring their fun and extensive sandwich menu, particularly the Glorious Bastard. However, my eyes (and wallet) were especially drawn to the Breakfast Sandwich. At $6.50, it's a steal and a darn good sandwich. The bread was delicious and it was a great complement to the egg, sauce, and cheese. Will be back just for this. They have books inside, some cute artwork, and a few tables. Lots of grab-and-go-options.

Yelp
Date: Tuesday, November 7th, 2023 What: Lunch Delivery Party of: 2 Time Ordered: around 1:45pm Time Delivered: around 2:30pm How: DoorDash (DD) Delivered To: Outer Richmond *Glorious Bastard: Turkey, Bacon, Avocado, Pepper Jack, Lettuce, Tomato, Pickled Onions & Garlic Mayo on Dutch Crunch ($15.95) *Pastrami Papi: Hot Pastrami, Swiss Cheese, Pepperoncini, Dijon Mustard & Garlic Mayo on sliced Rye ($14.95) *Ricky Ricardo: Cubano Sandwich with Ham, Smoked Pork, Swiss Cheese, Pickles, Jalapenos, and a Garlic Mustard sauce ($14.95) The hubby wanted sandwiches and picked Salty's. I'm a turkey and pepperjack kind of girl, so I picked the glorious bastard. The filling was good and ample. I do wish we could swap out the bread or make notes on DD. I'm definitely not a sweet and salty kind of person. so the bread was not my thing. I don't eat much bread anyways, but it would have been nice to be able to modify that at least. The hubby got the other two and seemed to enjoy them. He does love his reubens and and this seemed to fit the bill. Solid place for sandwiches. Just wish I could choose my own bread.

Yelp
I get a sandwich here *every* time I visit my ophthalmologist across the street at the Eye Institute - it's a treat to look forward to. Sandwiches are inventive, delicious, big. I always have enough left over for dinner, but I get an extra sandwich to bring home to my partner anyway so I don't have to share. (Well, also so I can sample two different sandwiches.) You can concoct your own sandwich or sub but why bother? Shadi's creations beat mine. I just got their "Glorious Bastard". The main guy there -Shadi -is *super* nice and helpful too! Oh, and they have an unusual brand of potato chips that's killer: Zapp's. They're only open for lunch. Street, metered parking is usually easy.

Yelp
The people who work here are SO NICE and friendly. Would come back just to bask in the good energy. I ordered the habibi with half chicken and half cauliflower and it was solid!
google avatar

Yelp
Heard good things about this place from some colleagues. I believe this used to be where Philz was on Van Ness. Nice place to grab some sandwiches, salads and coffee. Big portions. I personally found their sandwiches a bit "salty " (ha ha) but still pretty tasty. Nice ambiance on this stretch of Van Ness.

Yelp
Had jury duty on April 15, didn't want to have lunch at the court cafeteria so I walked to Salty's and ordered a Pastrami Papi. Sat at one of the limited tables. The place is clean but gets busy during lunch hour. The sandwich was fantastic! The bearded kid behind the counter was courteous and, I think, his father was mulling around straightening shelves and clearing tables. I appreciate the attention to cleanliness and the fresh quality food. I recommend this place.

Yelp
Really nice little sandwich shop oasis in a busy but tougher neighborhood. The ingredients were high quality and super fresh. It reminds me of the early days of Ike's when they had their small shop in the Castro. The guy running the show here seems on his game and everything is well organized for in person or pickup. Espresso drinks and coffee available too! Easily walkable from CPMC Hospital as well.
google avatar

Justin B.

Yelp
Great Place, amazing food and service! Highly recommend the terrapin girl! I was really touched by the attention they gave to my pup!
google avatar

Stewart L.

Yelp
This is a great sandwich shop with really tasty options. I used to work in a deli so the one food I know really well is a sandwich. They are pretty quick with the service here and it's very fast if you order ahead. I recommend the #2 pesto and provolone sandwich. I can't wait to work my way through this menu! You should check it out if you get the chance
google avatar

Ada H.

Yelp
The sandwiches here are absolutely delicious and typically are well made. I usually DoorDash from Salty's since it's extremely difficult to find parking for pick up. The sandwich shop itself is a bit small so it's best to order your sandwich and eat elsewhere. Glorious bastard- (5/5) This is always my go to and even though the ingredients sound basic, the sandwich is jam packed with flavor. Service in person is always nice and quick. Overall great spot to get sandwiches.

Yelp
A very very cute sandwich and coffee shop on Van Ness. I had their coffee and breakfast sandwich, which was delicious. It was a Japanese egg omelette Inside of ciabatta bread with spicy Mayo dressing. Very delicious. People who work there are very nice.

Steve R.

Yelp
Stay out of my business, if I wanted anything but delete I'd let you know. We understand each other now.
google avatar

Yelp
Came by in the morning and loved the vibe. Casual sandwich place, similar to Rhea's in the Mission. Friendly owner. Glorious Bastard - 4.5. Well conceived combination of flavors. A premium sandwich in cost ($16) and execution. Great Dutch crunch bread for sweetness and texture, flavored mayo, hearty turkey, avocado.
google avatar

Aleda G.

Yelp
I ordered 40 sandwiches for my team as a staff appreciation luncheon. Ordering was smooth and Salty's delivered on time! The sandwiches were a hit! Most requested sandwich was the #1Glorious B-sandwich followed by #15 Double/Double. Sandwiches were delicious, made with fresh ingredients, and tasted delicious! Thank you, Shadi!

Yelp
This place is great. Went here for lunch several times and it is good. They give a good amount for the amount being paid. The sandwich is excellent. Very tasty and very filling. Service is pretty good. They have a lot of people at weekdays noon so try avoid ordering at the lunch hours. The restaurant is pretty small, maybe around 6-9 small tables. This place is my go-to place for quick lunches. Highly recommend it.

Michele N.

Yelp
It's so nice to get your morning coffee from a friendly, smiling face instead of a bored barista. And the giant sandwiches are great, too!

James B.

Yelp
Amazing sandwiches. Creative and most importantly delicious. Will definitely be back when I am in the city.
google avatar

Jake A.

Yelp
Great sandwiches and service! They have a lot of unique sandwiches or you can build your own. I'm picky so I did DIY. Aside from getting my order a little wrong (asked for no onions or tomatoes) everything was perfectly. I easily took them off so no issues. Meat was stacked and the bread was fresh. Found my new neighborhood sandwich spot!
google avatar

Eric W.

Yelp
Dang I followed the reviews looking for something to eat. I was not disappointed. The number 1 was the best turkey sandwich I've ever had.
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
This has got to be one of my most favorite sandwich places I been to in San Francisco. You get a lot of sandwich for the price. This sandwich was LOADED with meat but it has a perfect ratio to the other important toppings. I loved the bread too. It was crunchy yet moist. Most importantly it was not soggy. This has got to be one of the most unique sandwiches I have seen. Not only by the name of the sandwiches but the flavor combinations! The coffee here is also legit. They got full on espresso machines! The service here is impeccable. The staff is so nice and welcoming. Such a warm environment.
google avatar

Vincent V.

Yelp
1st time, Ordered a sandwich through door dash. It was delicious! I need to order again to make sure it wasn't a one hit wonder. By the way Saltys's, please remove personal phone numbers from door dash receipts.
google avatar

Vira P.

Yelp
Salty's is my new go-to for sandwiches. You can build your own or choose from their menu. I usually go for the Glorious Bastard, which has turkey, bacon, and avocado with a garlic mayo on Dutch crunch. I usually am full after eating half because they're quite large. I also like the Instacran, which has turkey, cranberry sauce, and a za'atar cream cheese. The half I saved got soggy later in the day, but it was still yummy. They now have breakfast sandwiches, toasts, and salads. I'm glad that they're expanding their menu, and I'll need to come back to try more items. They have a few tables for indoor door dining. I usually get mine to go. I always found it easy to place my order by phone, and it's ready by the time I walk over there. The people who work there are really friendly. Definitely check them out if you want a really good sandwich!
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Great sandwiches . Large portions. Family owned. Always look out for the specials. They are very good
google avatar

Julianne L.

Yelp
This is a great place to grab a filling sandwich for a lunch! Came here around noon during my lunch break to get something quick, and there was a short line ahead of me. It's a small venue with a few tables, so it looks like it could definitely get crowded. I ordered the Glorious Bastard sandwich and it was exactly what I wanted: a perfect ratio of turkey to veggies, some bacon for a salty crunch, all on Dutch crunch bread with garlic mayo. Portion-wise, I saved half for dinner, so it felt like I got my money's worth haha. On top of that, the staff is very friendly and seem like they enjoy serving the city some delicious sandwiches. I can't wait to try more sandwiches!
google avatar

Lian T.

Yelp
Big yums. Would definitely go out of my way to come here! The owners are so sweet and you can taste the quality and love that goes into their sandwiches. I got the pastrami and it was perfect. I wanna come back asap for the instacran!
google avatar

Ione A.

Yelp
I ordered the Build Your Own Sandwich (Dutch crunch, turkey, lettuce, onion, peperoncini, tomato, garlic mayo, yellow mustard, & Swiss cheese) on DoorDash. The sandwich was super good, very generous portions of all the ingredients! The only downside was that on the build your own sandwich on DoorDash you are only able to select one protein choice, would be great if you could pick two for an additional cost. Will definitely visit in store and see if I can order it that way next time!
google avatar

Kelley H.

Yelp
I ordered the Glorious Bastard to go and it was delicious! I crave this sandwich every day. I also ordered a bagel with the sun dried tomato cream cheese. They ran out of bagels, so they made mine with ciabatta bread instead and it was so tasty! I also ordered a Cardi B latte and I loved the flavors!
google avatar

Arlene C.

Yelp
Was told that Peet's was nearby, but didn't find. Thank goodness I saw people leaving with coffee cups out of Salty's! If your mechanic is in the area and you have a short wait this is your place. My mechanics confirmed it's a good choice for sandwiches. Keep your eyes open behind your head in the area!
google avatar

Sam Y.

Yelp
I've always passed by this place during lunch and there's always people there...now I know why. We waited 45 mins for our sandwiches. Everyone else either ordered online or thru the phone. We saw a bunch of orders being done before ours and people coming and going. We were getting hungrier and hungrier. It smelled so good in there and we just kept on waiting and waiting... There was another lady there that also waited a long time. She seemed frustrated. We were the only ones that didn't seem to have ordered ahead of time. Eventually our order came out and we had to rush back to work. Due to the time crunch, I did not check my order. Two of our orders did not have the requested bread change. I can see that the workers were working thru the lunch hour traffic and doing the best they can for those 45 mins of us waiting, so I didn't really care too much...plus at that point we were too hungry to be picky. Lesson learned. From now on I will call or order ahead of time if I decide to get Saltys again.
google avatar

Naima C.

Yelp
Saltys is my favorite sandwich place in the Bay Area. No other sandwich compares. The garlic mayo really sets the sandwich apart and is greatly paired with pickled onions.
google avatar

Nicholas C.

Yelp
So i deliver here every week and sometimes i get sandwiches here or the cardi b drink, i highly recommend them, great people great vibe. I got the turkey avocado sandwich and it was great, i also got a basic breakfast sandwich and it was amazing the chipotle sauce they put in to was a spicy and sweet flavor and it compliments the sandwich. Def check it out they have a variety of different sandwiches
google avatar

Frank P.

Yelp
I ordered a Glorious Bastard sandwich via Grub Hub, which was terrific. From the fresh ingredients they used to prep this, I can tell they genuinely care about their customers.
google avatar

Erin L.

Yelp
My lawyer is across the street and he recommended this spot. First off the fellow behind the counter was great, making jokes w/the customers and efficient. I wanted to try the Glorious Bastard since it seems to be the most popular sandwich but they had a special sandwich on the menu which was called the Mushroom melt... roast beef (Keyword : Boar's Head!), swiss cheese, & sauteed mushrooms, with a garlic mayo on sliced sourdough (just over$17 total). I had to try it! DELICIOUS! I'm from New York so I was sad when I didn't see any cream soda, but I had a root beer. I suggested cream soda to the fellow behind the counter & he smiled & told me about the deli his dad used to own downtown on Montgomery St (for 35 years) & he sold cream soda. I hope he considers it, because there's nothing I love more than a good deli sandwich with a cream soda. It just takes me back and you really can't find great sandwich shops in this city. But this one is a gem. I'll be back!

Yelp
Earlier this year Salty's was featured in one of the top 100 places to eat in the Bay Area in 2022, and after trying it a couple times, it's easy to see why. Quality and flavor, great customer service, it checks all those boxes. I occasionally visit the 24 hour fitness on Van Ness, and Salty's happens to be just few short blocks away which makes it perfect when I'm looking for a post-workout sandwich. And for those that know me, I love me my sandwiches. On my latest visit, I decided to go with the 'Glorious Bastard' sandwich, which come with turkey, bacon, avocado, pepper jack, veggies, and garlic mayo. The blend of flavors and high quality of the turkey is no wonder it's at the very top of the menu list. It's one of those sandwiches, that you can bring to park and not need a ton of napkins to get through. It was well put together, with the ratio of all the ingredients matching well. Nothing overpowering, just sandwich perfection. The size of the sandwich I thought was the perfect size for my appetite. As I've gotten older I can't put down as much food as I used to, and after one-half I knew I could've stopped eating, be content, saved the rest for later. But of course I ate the whole thing and nothing sounds better than taking a quick power nap right after. I love that their menu has so many different sandwich combinations, so definitely take time to check their menu before calling-in/walking-in to order because it'll definitely save you some time. On my latest visit, I was in and out in 10 minutes. Definitely towards the top of my list of sandwiches in this part of town!

M M.

Yelp
Excellent food and excellent service. Their sandwiches and breakfast bagels are delicious. Thank you Salty's!
google avatar

Patricia F.

Yelp
The sandwiches are to die for , def a 10 out of 10. The customer service is great, and the food is so fresh.

Cee P.

Yelp
$20 for a sandwich?!! Prices are outrageous here however the service was courteous. It wasn't particularly remarkable; the sandwich was salty, just like its name... I've had better elsewhere.
google avatar

Yarely P.

Yelp
Ordered the glorious bastard with light garlic mayo and it was incredible! The Dutch crunch bread was one of the best I've had in the city. The sandwich was delicious, filling, and still tasted great hours later when I had my leftovers. I'm not a fan of mayo but the garlic mayo was tasty and had a strong garlic flavor which really made the sandwich 5 start worthy. Not only was the food delicious but the service was amazing. They were extremely friendly and overall had a great experience. Definitely coming back here!
google avatar

Leslie S.

Yelp
WOW!! YUM! AMAZING! Two of the best sandwiches!! Stumbled on Salty's after a terrific visit to the Asian Art Museum in SF! First, the service here is 10 stars! The son and father duo who run the front with family in back cooking! Just the kindest people alive! Onto the food!! I had the Ricky Ricardo, which is there version of a Cubano, and my husband had a pastrami on this crunch bread! Superb level sandwiches which are made even better because of the love and attention.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Got food for pickup. It's quick and they're friendly at the front. Answered any questions we had at the time. I had gotten Captain Planet which was pretty good. I think honestly I'd want other veggies I could add in. It was mostly lettuce. If I could add egg in there that'd shore things up a lot too. Good for what it was though, would stop by again for a quick bite.
google avatar

Justine Ray M.

Yelp
This is definitely now my go sandwich spot. 4 two tops and my fave sandwiches Maui crunch which is tuna pickles, red onions, and chips. The other is the sweet heat bbq which is soo good. I flip back and forth. The whopper I tried once but it was too sour for me. I highly recommend this spot
google avatar

Mauricio D.

Yelp
The Ricky Ricardo sandwich is delicious. We even order catering for our office and everyone loves it. Totally recommend.
