Tour groups stop outside of the Pickle Guys, Doughnut Plant, and Kossar's on Grand St when visiting the Lower East Side. Yet they never seem to walk farther along the same street to a local neighborhood favorite: Saluggi's East. You probably haven't seen and likely never will find this pizza establishment named on a list of NYC's best pizza. But I assure you that it's amazing. And the fact that locals, like me, continue to patronize it with loyalty, attests to its reliable quality, reasonable prices, and accessibility.
I've never had anything but pizza here, but everything I've tried is delicious. My favorite is the Little Italy pizza, with Italian sausage, roasted peppers, caramelized onions, and very generous and good quality fresh mozzarella cheese. I'm also a big fan of the Grandma Saluggi's Pizza pie, which is a thin-crust square pizza with mozzarella and parmesan. The Vegetarian pizza comes with a robust amount of vegetables, including mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, olives, and red onions. For a vegan pizza, the Vegan Cheese is wonderfully cheesy, with the basil hitting the right spot.
I also appreciate that the staff is flexible about adding ingredients to the specialty pizzas. We've been able to even add an ingredient to just one half of the specialty pizza. The atmosphere is casual and cozy inside, making it a great place to meet up with friends or just enjoy a family meal. There are TVs for those looking to catch a sports game, but thankfully are not on very loud for those still trying to have a conversation.
