Where to Eat Comforting, Cheese-Stuffed Pupusas in DFW | Eater Dallas

"With purple-shrouded tables surrounding the kitchen on two sides and reggaeton booming in the background, Salvadorian Cuisine is like a theatre in the round, and its pupusas are the stars of the show. Despite their enormity, the pupusa maintain a perfect ratio of filling to masa dough. Try the rich and creamy pupusa de loroco, arguably one of the best pupusas in Dallas, or the simple yet impeccable cheese and black bean pupusa." - W. Trace Miller

We stopped by for some pupusas on Sunday and the place was great. The service was amazing, we were greeted at the door and our server was very attentive and polite. The one faulty thing is the fact that the kitchen is kinda open, so you smell what's being cooked at all times. We had the bad luck to be there as they cooked fish so it was unpleasant but the food more than made up for it. I never finish the little bean dips that are usually served as you sit at the table. This time, I cleaned out my cup and fought my mom for the rest of hers. They were really tasty. I ordered the plantain and one pupusa. The plantain was out pretty fast but the pupusa did take over 25 minutes. However, the place was full so it was understandable. The server kept refilling our coffee and waters and made sure we were taken care of as we waited. All in all a very good experience. Totally recommend!!

Google
Wonderful food, wonderful people. I had tamales de pollo and pupusas with queso, frijoles y puerco. Excellent. Highly recommend.

Rosalie C.

Google
I love their pupusas, this is the go to when I'm craving Salvadorian. They kinda feel like a hole in the wall place in that they're hidden off the main roads, but absolutely authentic and delicious. The staff is always friendly too!

Google
food was excellent.... service was great! we had Pupusas cheese and tiger nut milk

Google
Walking in didn't feel welcoming, they weren't wearing masks regardless of the sign on their door. No coffee since it was the afternoon :/ but once we got our meals and more patrons walked in the place seemed to lighten up. The food was delicious but the rice tasted par-boiled... chewy and not what I'm used to when it's made at home. Everything else was great, the horchata was not too sweet and the plates we had were great 👍. Check it out.

Google
As soon as we walked in, we were promptly greeted. They were busy but they took our drink order as soon as we sat down. They also brought out chips along with the amazing bean dip and salsa. Super friendly wait staff. Our entrees came out fast! I ordered the Carne Asada, it was very tender and they cooked it a perfect medium rare, which is what I asked for. My daughter and husband ordered The pork and cheese Papusas. Everything was delicious. We will definitely be back!

Vic Dela C.

Google
Great food! And very affordable, too. I came with Sunday for Father's Day with a big group. The servers were somewhat confused and the food came late. But this was totally understandable as the place was packed for the special day. Still, the servers managed to do their job with a smile. Good job!

Google
My favorite place to eat, Delicious pupusas! Usually get the Salvadorian plate that has a bit of everything, plantains, yucca, rice, tamales and a salad. Authentic amazing food and drinks, service is always excellent!

Yelp
they don't have enough staff and takes long the food is great but it not a clean restaurant there was a lipstick stain on the coffee mug when he brought it out
google avatar

Nathan C.

Yelp
Without question the best pupusas I've ever had. With the slaw and the green sauce, it was perfectly balanced with the creamy cheese and the crispy pork. Also, don't sleep on the beans and salsa with chips. Super fast service and very friendly staff. Would highly recommend!

Yelp
I got their Plato Típico, the portions were a good size and it's a great option for sharing. The pupusas and cortido were fantastic and hands down the best part of the meal, savory and busting with flavor. The chicken tamal was pretty good but could've used a bit more chicken and there was a big chunk of potato in it and the corn tamal should be offered as a dessert with a sweet sauce. It was kind of dry and a little boring on it's own. Overall the food was still very good, the restaurant is super clean and the staff is great.

Erin B.

Yelp
Fantastic Salvadorian cuisine. Must get the Papusas! My husband and I drive from Grapevine just for this spot!

Yelp
This is by far my favorite Salvadoran restaurant. You can't get any more authentic than this. I came here just to have 3 pupusas and every bite was worth it. The pupusas comes with two salsas and the cabbage dish (I'm not sure what its name is in Spanish). But all that is delicious! The bean and cheese is by far my favorite but the pork and cheese and plain cheese are good as well. This restaurant is located in a busy shopping plaza so it may be easy to miss. There is plenty of parking and customer service is excellent. It is a small restuarant and I noticed a lot of people ordered take out which is okay but the restaurant it self is very clean and orderly. I will always come back here for delicious Salvadoran food!!! You will not be disappointed!

Jaime S.

Yelp
Piece of glass found inside pupusas. Luckily I was not hurt or that a child found it. It was the size of a nickel with three sharp ends. The pupusas themselves had very little filling and not enough salsa was given for 23 pupusas.
google avatar

Gill S.

Yelp
Damn good pupusas. Everything you would want with ordering a pupusa right here. The pork cheese and bean were the best ones! Thick, cheesy, with plenty of flavor. I should have asked for salsa rojo or verde but definitely next time. Although its just filler, I really enjoyed the black beans from here (especially the cheese added on top). The shirmp in garlic sauce is not bad by any means, but mostly not worth it due to the price point. They give you a GIANT box of rice with about 7 shrimp. The shrimp taste as expected, but theres nothing special about them. They arent charcoal grilled, coconut breaded, blackened, fried, or even seared. Just regular ol' shrimp for 13 bucks. I'll have to try more things from the menu but for now its definitely worth checking out.

Yelp
Amazing is all I have to say. Went in on a whim yesterday with one of my besties who is half El Salvadoran. We both agree this spot is amazing! We tried all the pupusas on the menu and got a chicken tamal as well. Salsa on point as was the pickled cabbage. We will be back for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
My review is based off of what I have eaten so far. I got the passion fruit drink it was so refreshing. I actually got full off of the complimentary chips salsa and bean dip so by the time my sampler plate arrived I had no room for the puposa or chicken tamales but the sweet corn tamal and cream was delicious. The sweet plantain were caramelized with a little crispness around the sides and creamy on the inside very good. I have to come back later and give a proper review.

Peter G.

Yelp
Amazing pupusas, I had the bean and cheese. They were cooked well and I could tell they made them fresh. The pickled cabbage (not sure what it's called) was plentiful and delicious. I had extra! Really good fried plantain for desert with sweet beans and a creamy desert cheese I think. Definitely authentic. Will be coming back!

Yelp
This "easy to miss" restaurant is located in a plaza that doesn't have much going on. The restaurant has two seating areas. One of the areas looks like it is used for events. The tables in this area had linens on it and the chairs were decorated. It looked like a baby shower was taking place in that room while I was there. I believe they also use this room as an overflow room for the main part of the restaurant. The customer service was great. Despite the language barrier between my party and some of the waiters, we were still accommodated and felt comfortable during our visit. The food was delicious and the portions are huge. There only con was lack of cleanliness. It wasn't dirty but it wasn't clean...you know what I mean. Otherwise, I would recommend this place. It was my first time trying El Salvadorian food and I'm officially a fan until further notice.

Yelp
Came to Texas for a conference and saw good reviews for this restaurant so we tried it out. In short, one of the best home-y feeling and authentic meals my partner and I have ever had. We're pescatarian and had plenty of options. Everything was fantastic - papusas, plantains (holy), tamales, fried fish (so flavorful). Met an older physician who had been coming for years and thinks this is the most authentic place. The service was also super friendly, got mega topups for our horchata. Definitely 5 stars for delicious food and friendly service in an non-pretentious environment. Wish we could have this in Canada.

Linda M.

Yelp
The best papusas I've had I love everything they serve very sweet ladies everytime I come in the tamales too and I love the plantains
google avatar

Jasmine R.

Yelp
I got a passion fruit drink and sweet corn tamale and chicken tamale . Everything was good except the chicken tamale you only have little potatoes like about two small pieces and for the chicken yea wasn't barely any to call it a chicken tamale
google avatar

dean d.

Yelp
Ordered the Tipico Plate: cheese and bean pupusa with coleslaw on the side for topping, one chicken Tamal, one corn tamale, fried plantain and fried cassava (think non-potato fries). All washed down with a giant cup of horchata. Dang I'm full: all of it was delicious. Wait staff are friendly and helpful, if a bit slow.

Yelp
As soon as we walked inside we were greeted and sat wherever we liked. Our server came and brought chips black beans and salsa and took our order. He was so kind and HILARIOUS. Excellent customer service!! Food came out quick and our server checked on us frequently. We ordered Plato Típico, Mar y Tierra (I think is the name) and some bean/cheese pupusas. (which are HUGE) the horchata is AMAZING might I add!! Totally recommend this place!! Will be coming back FOR SURE!!!!

Lucky J.

Yelp
Tha worst service , waitress was sooooo rude and this restaurant is OVER PRICES , their big plates Is just to cheat

Yuri G.

Yelp
Pupusas were mid, i've definitely had better. They offered two different salsas which was good. They brought chips to the table without asking and they charge for it. Also the AC must of been broken it was HOT in there uncomfortably hot. I asked for my drink to be replaced because it was bitter and got charged for two. You can definitely find a better place with better food and prices.

Sarah C.

Yelp
I ordered some pupusa and tamales for togo. I ordered all three different kinds of pupusa and the one with cheese and beans was my favorite. But I couldn't tell which one had beans, cheese and pork. And their tamale de pollo was huge. I thought they would be regular tamales size from mexican restaurant, but they were humongous and had potato in. I also ordered tamale with the sweet cream, it had very unique texture. It was more like dessert, I preferred the regular tamales. Lastly, their fresca is huge. I ordered passion fruit, but it tasted more like guava, but still good, not too sweet. Overall, they were good, specially their price ($1.99).

Yelp
This was my first time trying Salvadoran cuisine! I got the combination appetizer for lunch, which was a mix of all the most well-known Salvadoran dishes like pupusa, tamales, plantains, and fried yucca. I did not know what pupusas were and was excited to try it. It was like flat bread with pork, beans, and cheese stuffed inside. Though the pupusa was quite good, it came out cold. Out of everything on my plate, I liked the meat tamale the most as it was most tasty. The only other complaint I have is the slow service. It took forever for us to get our food and even longer to receive the check. However, we were part of a large group, so it's a bit understandable. Just keep this in mind if you ever come in a large group.

Jerry P.

Yelp
Hard to find in a local shopping center, but it was worth it. We each had the Plato Tipico which come with a potato/chicken tamale, a plain tamale, plantains, yuca, salad & a Papusa. We were used to that style of food but the papusa was new. The horchata was very good. The corridor slaw was great. Salsas great. The food is fresh, had to wait for our plates, but good food is not fast food. The ladies were kneading the masa right there. We were the only non Latino diners in a busy restaurant so you know it was good & authentic. Next time we'll get just 1 Plato and split an entree. The soups looked great, as did the other dishes the waiters were carrying. Only wish they had more English speaking staff who could help explain the menu. Go Saturday and see if Carlos is working the floor!

Yelp
Best Pupusas! Salvadoreños actually eat here! We have never been disappointed with the delicious Pupusas from this restaurant! The chef is very nice, and patient with us when we had questions about the ingredients that were unfamiliar to us.
google avatar

Chrystal S.

Yelp
Let me start by saying that I have never tried Salvadorian cuisine, so I can only write based off of this experience as a newbie. The cook really understood beef. It's been marinated and cooked at the perfect temperature to hold in it's juices. I've never known a skirt steak to taste so good! I got the steak and onions and the garlic shrimp. Both of the meats were cooked well, and the onions properly caramelized. This was all eaten from delivery, so I can't offer any review on the inside but the food certainly speaks for itself.

Yelp
Oh you guys....you guys.....you have to try this place. Seriously. There are 3 types of food I consider myself a connoisseur of. BBQ, Burgers, and Mexican food. That being said, I think Salvadorian food is kind of like a cross between Mexican food (no, not Tex-Mex....Mexican. You are in Texas, you should know the difference), and Caribbean/Puerto Rican/Cuban food. We started off with the combination appetizer, and it was huge. Fried yucca, fried plantains (the sweet kind, not like tostones), a tamale, a papusa, and a salad. I could have done with out the salad. The papusa was a bite of delishiousness inside basically a tortilla. How you stuff a tortilla, I don't know, but that is basically what it is. The yucca..yum. The fried plantians...oh, my, God. Could have been desert. The tamale...meh. The meat inside tasted spectacular, but I didn't care for the...I don't know, it would be corn masa in a mexican tamale....but this had a different texture. Almost gelatinous. I didn't care for it. But wait, there's more. We ordered the BBQ...or I believe it was called the parilldas dish. I can't remember, sue me. Forget the name...just get it. You like fajitas? I do. I would eat fajitas for every meal if I could. If these were served with flour tortillas, I would say they are the best fajitas I have ever had. but they only came with 3 corn tortillas, and I am glad, because I got to focus on the protein. Steak, chicken, s link of chorizo, grilled onions. BAM!! It is also served with a side of refried beans and rice...which we didn't even get to because there was SO MUCH FOOD!!! Seriously, I want to go back now, it was that good. This is a little hidden gem, and the people working there were so nice. Don't pass it up if you get the chance.

Yelp
Great bean dip and cheese and probably the best pupusas that I have had in Dallas. This is a nice place to visit. Friendly server and good music.
google avatar

Malachai S.

Yelp
Good spot. Drinks were great. Yucca was soft inside and crispy outside. Pupusas were flavorful. No complaints. Def be back.
google avatar

Tiffany F.

Yelp
We used to live in Richardson and try to stop in here when we're visiting because it's so delicious and inexpensive. Two handmade pupusas, chips, and bean dip will probably fill you up and only costs $4. The plantains and chicken tamale are also great. I haven't tried much else because I'm so addicted to the pupusas with cabbage slaw and salsa. The chips taste like cheap ones from a bag, but I'm not complaining. Service is always good and friendly.
google avatar

Sharlenne S.

Yelp
The pupusas are legit, and huge. Best tasting ones I've had in a long time. I like the "revuelta". It has everything (cheese, beans, pork), and you can taste each component. Dinner plates are huge and will leave plenty of ledtovers... unless you're like me and eat it all right then and there. The place is small and a little crowded. You can see right into the kitchen as everyone is making pupusas by hand. I will be back time and time again.
google avatar

George B.

Yelp
Phenomenal. Expect to order in Spanish because this place is as authentic as they come! Get the Plato Tipico, it's a sampler of a bunch of the most popular Salvadorian recipes.
google avatar

Gil S.

Yelp
This restaurant has some of the best pupusas in Dallas. They're a great size and come loaded with meat and cheese. The complimentary black bean dip with chips is a nice touch. The wait for food can be a little long but it's worth it!!
google avatar

Crystal C.

Yelp
Jennifer was my server and boy was she amazing!!! I got here with no time was in a rush and a slightly bad mood. She eased my anxiety, she picked out my meal for me based off what I told her I like. She is the reason I'll be back and the food is AMAZING!!!! PLAINTAINS ARE SO FRESH!!!!
google avatar

Elmer M.

Yelp
We ask for a hen soup and they give us chicken instead for salvadorian people that's a big difference the pup usas are good just don't ask for hen soup
google avatar

Victoria H.

Yelp
This place was so good! I've been searching for a place that makes pupusas like my moms and they have nailed it here. I also had the platanos and crema. It was fresh and authentic, the atmosphere was very pleasant as well. I can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Yomaira C.

Yelp
So I'm from New York where they have mastered the art of the term "revuelta". Mixing all the ingredients and then placing it in the masa.. that makes for a good pupusa. This place just takes each separarte ingredient and places it in the masa.. which didn't do much for my taste buds. Is my opinion biased, perhaps? Either ways, their tamales de pollo were good, chicken was very dry but that's typical for Central American cooking. The beans were bomb! But the plátanos fritos were over ripened and in excessive oil. Overall this place was okay. I wouldn't go back though since the main dish "pupusas" were mediocre.
google avatar

Nas G.

Yelp
The cashier, who must be the owner, was rude. I love pupusas and they make it great here, but not worth visiting if you want bad customer service.
google avatar

Yuby A.

Yelp
Found this place thanks to Yelp and I couldn't be happier! Their cheese pupusas were delicious and the curtido salad was definitely better than other Salvi places I've tried in Dallas. Their horchata was decent but I've had better. I really liked their chicken tamale... It was wrapped in a banana leaf and had rice cooked in. Reminded me of the flavors of a nacatamal (for my Nica peeps). I will definitely be back when I get that itch for some tajadas de maduro (fried plantain). These are a MUST try! Hope you all enjoy!

Trey M.

Yelp
The absolute best pupusas in Dallas / Fort Worth Great food made with care and attention to detail
google avatar

Colton R.

Yelp
My favorite place for Salvadorian. Is it a hole in the wall...yes, but trust me that now a days it's like the Taj Mahal compared to when it opened. Are they super fast and the best at customer service...no, but they do well in both these departments, just not rock stars at either. Their food, particularly the tamales and pupusas, are the best in Dallas. I could likely eat here every day and die a happy man. Salvadorian tamales are like the Rolls Royce of the tamale world, in that they are wrapped in Banana leaves and remain oh so moist and steamy. I will continue to be a customer well after it becomes bad for my cholesterol and health, but I'm OK with that.
google avatar

Mayra G.

Yelp
Pupusas were the only thing good. Yuca con chicharon were bland and dry. Service was horrific. 7 people and only 2 tables to tend and people were on the phones. 20 mins just to get drinks. Ridiculous. Never again will I eat there.

Brandy V.

Yelp
Was not happy that when I asked for my receipt I see a 1.08 charge for chips and salsa. Um, yall bring this to us when you bring the menu. We don't ask for the chips and salsa and bean dip. Then he tells me its on the menu the charge (YES IT'S THERE IN SMALL PRINT).. I told him it's not right if I didn't ask for my receipt nobody would know that they charge for those chips and salsa OH and that bean dip (that they bring to you without asking when you first sit down) Like I told him don't be bringing ppl chips and salsa if they ask you all need to say there is a charge!!!!!! P.s my rice was hard!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Kathicita Y.

Yelp
This is my favorite Salvadorian restaurant. Service is incredible, always with a nice smile.
google avatar

Megan E.

Yelp
Service is a little slow but that's ok. Food was mostly good (beef was overdone) but shrimp was spot on. Salsa is good as well. Definitely worth trying!

Figgy F.

Yelp
This place is tiny and delicious! Everyone was pleasant and I loved that you can see in the kitchen and see the ladies making the pupusas. Definitely have as many pupusas as you can--the chorizo and cheese are to die for. You could probably fill up on those alone, but give the Mariscada a chance. It's huge and full of fish and seafood, including half of a huge crab. It'll be messy but totally worth it. My husband had the Agua y Tierra (Surf and Turf) and the meat was delicious. Highly recommend it if you're looking to try something new, that tastes like home food and will leave you filling full and happy. I'm gonna have to come back and try everything else--the Loroco pupusas and the tamales looked great, too!

Teresa C.

Yelp
Hands down the best Papusas in DFW metroplex. They are cooked to perfection. The chef grilled/fried crispy and stuffed with lots of cheese. The Papusas are served with Curtido Slaw that is seasoned to perfection as well. The restaurant is clean, the staff is friendly, and the food is great. You can't ask for more. Please support this local business. I have had other dishes that are great, too. But I always find myself ordering the Papusas.
google avatar

Melissa T.

Yelp
Awesome pupusas!!!! The service is great too. It's a great little restaurant. I haven't had pupusas this good since I lived in Los Angeles. My husband and I can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Yelp
Across parking lot from Holy Frijoles in Richardson. Don't know anything about Salvadorian food but this appears to be the real thing. I had chicken & onions entree - two chicken breasts w/ cream and quite a bit of sliced onions, rice, beans, a side salad. $7.99. Stepson had - not really sure - some kind of combo appetizer - with a bunch of different south american veggie items - one was plaintains, piping hot, mushy but good. Lot of Mexican sodas - Jarriscos I think they're called. Lightly carbonated fruit juices. Ambiance - hmmm - like I said the food was good. Worth a try if you like sampling foreign foods. Give 'em a try, looks like a new place, and they're trying. They really need to redo the menus tho, almost unreadable.
google avatar

E J.

Yelp
Excellent for the price. Only wish they had a couple more pupusa ingredient options. Have tried all pupusas and tamals and never been disappointed. Their black bean dip and salsa to start are very good too. Service is very good. Can have a filling meal for under $8 that also tastes great. Can't beat that, unless they had 1 or 2 more pupusa filling options that is. Will definitely return.
google avatar

Dorothee H.

Yelp
I love this place! The food is delicious and the staff is very friendly. As a vegetarian, I especially love the pupusas, corn tamale and fried plantains. My husband had a plate with beef and beans which he very much enjoyed. Finally the horchata drink is a must try! We'll keep coming back.

Laura M.

Yelp
We walked in for Lunch. They did not offer us or say anything about a Lunch menu. The Menu that they gave us was Really High for lunch. $11.00 and up. My Husband Ordered the Plato Tipico for $11.99. It was a large plate of food including the Salad. I ordered 2 Chicken tamales by themselves. There was not much flavor in the tamales.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Its a small place run by a family i think. It has an open kitchen at the middle of the dining place. They serve you chips and tasty salsa as soon you sit. Bean dip is good too. The owner is cheerful and courteous. I got myself bean and cheese pupusa. I became fan of pupusa from the fist bite. Got myself chicken breast with onions, it was fair. If the owner is reading this, i would recommend get rid of their rice and switching with different brand or making it plain.
