I'm thrilled to share my experience at Sammy's Ethiopian Food! The flavors were absolutely delicious, and I was pleasantly surprised by the generous portions. The authenticity of the dishes transported me to Ethiopia, and the warm and friendly staff made the dining experience even more enjoyable. Can't wait to visit again!

I first experience eating Ethiopian food and it was amazing! The owner Sammy was beyond friendly. As we ate dinner Sammy’s son gave us a wonderful history of each dish. The atmosphere of the restaurant nice, prices were good, and staff were great. A must visit restaurant.

Google
This place was wonderful. The service was great and the food delicious. We had the sambusa (which was perfectly seasoned and just the right amount of crunch), lamb awaze tibs (good flavor with a little spice), a side of the cabbage (which was SO good, definitely recommend) and a side of the chick pea stew (also scrumptious). If you want to try something different and delicious, definitely give them a try!

Google
My wife and I love Ethiopian food, and every time we go to a new city, we always try the Ethiopian restaurants. Who knew that the best one would be in our own backyard? If you are looking to try Ethiopian food, this is a great place! If you’re a connoisseur, this is a great place! We will definitely be back. thank you Sammy!!

Google
I ordered the lamb and the owner recommended the red lentils with it. All yummy. Oh plus the tea was perfect. The baklava was warm and gooey. You won’t regret trying it.

Google
We’d never had Ethiopian food before and this place did not disappoint. Everything was incredibly flavorful. If you like spice you’ll love the food, if you don’t like things spicy they’ll accommodate that as well. Try the Ethiopian tea, it’s mildly sweet and spiced. The owner and wait staff were very helpful and super attentive. We’ll definitely return!

Google
We had so much fun at Sammy’s. Was our first time eating Ethiopian food and they took the time to explain it all! We wound up getting a bunch of orders and shared family style. The people here are kind, the place is super clean, and it is delicious. We will be back!

This is not a vegan establishment. The items I ordered are. I got the Ethiopian spiced tea, lentil sambusa, and veggie combo. Everything was pretty much average. If you could only get one thing I recommend it be the spicy lentils.

Yelp
We enjoyed our visit to Sammy's. The atmosphere was very nice. Well decorated, clean and charming. It was quite spacious on the inside Our waitress was very friendly. She got our food out quickly and recommended some tasty teas As for the food, quite good. We ordered the veggie plate to share and still took some home. All veggie were cooked to perfection. Unfortunately, I rushed in to eat and did not take a picture I really meant to take pictures of the nice art work and the well stocked bar too

Yelp
This restaurant is a must do while in New Orleans! Everything we ordered was spectacular. We got the beef and lentil sambusas. Crispy, savory, perfection. The platter felt like a warm hug. It was so tasty. You could tell a lot of love went into it. Service was outstanding and above average. We immediately felt welcome upon entering and our server kindly walked us through everything. It's a great place for any occasion. Date night, family night, friends night, anything. I say this because it's a relatively quiet restaurant so you can have conversations without shouting. This was important for us because we took my grandparents were able to hear each other :') Parking is a available on the left side of the restaurant. Overall, this was such a pleasant experience and I would recommend it to anyone in NOLA!

Yelp
The food was really good but what kept it from being excellent was it was too spicy. I'm a wuss, but my friend that was with me is not, and she even said it was too hot. We started with the lentil sambusa and it was utterly delightful except for the spice level. I ordered the greens and I loved them. So yummy. I love eating injera (Ethiopian bread) with greens. My friend got the vegetarian sampler and I sampled her sampler. It was excellent. All of it. I ordered hot tea and was never asked if I wanted more,

Yelp
I really enjoy Ethiopian food, and have been to the other two restaurants in New Orleans (both great btw); but, once I experienced Sammy's, it shot to the top of my list. It's easy to overlook since it's in the former location of a recently moved Ethiopian restaurant, but don't! EVERYTHING was delicious, from the kitfo (rare of course) and tibs to the awaze and injira. Our party ordered family style with lamb tibs, ribeye tibs, beef awaze, special kitfo, and the amazing veggie combo. There was more than enough for five of us with leftovers too. Sammy and his son run the restaurant with a homey feel and checked on us regularly. One note: they do not have a liquor license, but they're open to byob. I will definitely be returning soon!

Shannon C.

Yelp
Delicious! Highly recommend! Service was excellent, food was amazing, atmosphere was clean and nice but not stuffy. We got the lamb tibs, the special kitfo, and the gored gored. Everything was cooked perfectly with the perfect amount of spice. The greens were the best I've had at an Ethiopian restaurant. Can't wait to go back!

David L.

Yelp
Amazing food! Was in town on business and looking for Ethiopian food, saw this new restaurant pop up and decided to give it a try. Awaze tibs were out of this world. Not too spicy but great flavor. Injara was fresh and the lentils were on point. Great duo of father in son taking care of this place. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
I was sad for my neighborhood when Addis Nola bailed for a fancier address, especially having lost Fharmacy Nola not long ago. Then I saw Sammy's sign out front and made a snap decision to pull right in. I ordered Chicken Tibs that first visit, and just finished last night's Beef Tibs this afternoon. The one time I ate at Addis Nola, it was delicious but so spicy I couldn't eat enough of it to really get full. I like Sammy's even better, because all the wonderful Ethiopian flavors are there, but without the oppressive heat. I don't know where Sammy gets his beef, but it's some of the best I've had for a long time. I also got an order of lentil sambusas which were excellent as well. I took both my orders to go, and they were ready in 10 minutes or less. The dining room is charming-cheery orange walls, warm wood and brick, and white tablecloths with lots of natural light. I'm not sure if they serve alcohol, but I think my liver would appreciate a night off now and then.

Marsha B.

Yelp
I love Ethiopian food and often try at home and when I travel. This is a delicious, and healthy, option if you want another option outside of the traditional food found in the quarter. It was absolutely delicious. I'm

Yelp
I'm back. This is my happy place. I love the chill vibe and I dream about the food. Yeah, my own Saturday night treat. I'm lucky.

D L.

Yelp
Sammy's Ethiopian Kitchen has a delicious vegetarian/vegan dish consisting of 6 sample dishes and the signature "bread" of typical Ethiopian food. Some spicy some not. Much to our surprise Sammy came to our table to introduce himself and express pride in his food and the 3rd week of opening up! There were fresh red roses on every table as well as a candle. There are several booths and many tables to select from. Good for large families or a romantic date. Our food was served very quickly, wait staff was very friendly and answered all questions. The menu has many authentic selections-so give Sammy's Ethiopian Kitchen a take out order or an indoor experience.

Paige B.

Yelp
Everything here is amazing and the staff was so nice! Highly recommend the veggie platter, Doro wat and lamb tibs... Will definitely be a repeat customer!

Kstar W.

Yelp
I loved, loved, loved this place! My favorite things were the beef sambusa with the awaze sauce and the veggie plate. My dad is a very picky eater and once I was able to get him to try the food, he didn't want to stop eating it. If you're craving authentic Ethiopian food, this place will scratch your itch.

Julius J.

Yelp
My daughter and I ate here at 2:00PM after my doctors appointment. I had seen a documentary on Ethiopian food and since then had wanted to try it. As we were in NOLA and Sammy's was close to the VA Hospital we decided on it as our adventure in this cuisine. Be warned that the outside isn't pretentious and you enter from the side entrance not on the Broad Street façade. The interior was clean and well furnished with cozy low oak beamed ceilings. The reception and wait staff were knowledgeable and pleasant. We chose the classic Spicy Ethiopian Chicken Stew called Doro Wot along with sides of Lentils and Chick Peas which were spiced and pureed. The Doro Wot had a chicken thigh and leg and a boiled egg in a delightful sauce over a bed of the unique fermented flat bread. The dish is eaten from the communal platter with bits of that bread supplied in a generous amount rolled in strips in an accompanying basket. The food was comfortably hot with heat and served with a flourish to our table. I did request a knife and fork to cut up the chicken for us to share and those were supplied quickly and courteously. The food we tried this time was deeply flavored and not overly spicy and the sauce was thick and clung to the chicken and bread without dripping from the bread. Very nice taste. I enjoyed the lintels more than the chick peas but both were welcome additions. At the end the owner visited our table and explained our dish in more detail Saying the sauce for the Doro Wot takes 7 hours to prepare and that he hoped that the food would appeal to the NOLA palette. I assured him that it had met my expectations and then some and that I would most certainly eat here again. If you like Cajun spiced food then I am sure you will enjoy this just based on the Doro Wot alone. The menu is large and I hope to try the lamb next time.

Yelp
Returned for a meat dish--Ye'beg Tibs Wot--and Sammy did not disappoint. My new favorite Ethiopian is Sammy's!

Isabella T.

Yelp
Sammy's was an incredible dining experience! I had the veggie platter and my partner had the beef nibs and sambosas. All were 10/10, so flavorful and tasty. They are very gluten free friendly and vegan friendly for anyone with dietary restrictions. We were able to meet the talented chef Sammy and were served by his son, who was very knowledgeable and kind. The ambiance was great and perfect for date night, they had great music playing, too!! Thank you Sammy and Henny!

Jessica S.

Yelp
What a wonderful experience! Delicious flavorful food, amazing service, and great atmosphere. Also, BYOB for $10 corkage. Had a spectacular meal. We'll be back soon.

Claire M.

Yelp
We were driving thru on our road trip to California and decided to stop here for nourishment! What a great decision that was. The customer service was an awesome and friendly father and son and they treated us with complementary Ethiopian spiced tea. I ordered a veggie combo platter and was amazed to find out they use 100% teff injera! It's very rare nowadays to find a restaurant that doesn't cut their injera with all purpose flour. The spice was on point and amazing as well! The restaurant is new and very clean, they had someone even cleaning the outside windows which shows how much they really care about this place. The only thing I would say that could change is all the air fresheners and chemicals in the bathroom were overwhelming to my senses. I am allergic to strong fragrances so it was overpowering when I walked into the restroom. Maybe some natural essential oils might be better because other people like me can be sensitive to certain chemicals. Other than that thank you for the amazing food and music ! Bliss up.

Krista S.

Yelp
This was yum! We left stuffed. Was just visiting New Orleans but would be a regular for sure if I lived there. Beef tibs was so good. Sammy's son (who's name I don't remember) was a delight to visit with. If you open a store in Flagstaff, AZ, I'd eat there!

IinkBodie T.

Yelp
So, before I found this place I was a virgin to Ethiopian foods. The universe led me here and there are no words for the flavors and energy residing here. Many Americans have never had the chance to experience these plates. IT WAS sooo PIVOTAL AND WORTH MY MONEY. come by.... Hope to see you there! ps: try the doro wot and gomen. and BAKLAVA!!!!!

Hannah L.

Yelp
We picked up food this week when we had a friend visiting and it was amazing! The vegetarian combo is delicious and the injera is really amazing and flavorful. One of us in our group has a complicated set of allergies and they were so nice and helpful in adjusting his dish so that it didn't contain any of the many things he can't eat! Really great.

Jon K.

Yelp
I was on a lunch break from doing jury duty nearby when I discovered Sammy's and I am so happy I did. I was warmly greeted by the host and shown to my table. The dining room is lovely, with a combination of tables and booths, lots of natural light and interesting art on the walls. I ordered a combination vegetarian platter, which gave me an opportunity to sample all eight of the vegetarian selections along on the menu along with the delicious injera one uses to eat with instead of utensils. I enjoyed everything on the platter; the flavors were big, bold and savory. Service could not have been nicer nor more attentive and even Chef Sammy took the time to see how I was enjoying the food and offered the great suggestion of trying the items in combination. I can't wait to come back with some friends and sample more of the menu, including the lamb and traditional Ethiopian chicken stew.

Scientist W.

Yelp
Best Ethiopian we've had so far! The price was just right for our budget. Spent about $20. We 2 shared an order of lentil sambusa and a vegetarian platter. Tastes and textures were authentic (correct spices in the berbere spice mix) and so delicious! Two of us were filled and satisfied with even some more to take home. Our waitress was sweet and happy to explain the 8 or so dishes on the platter. The owner/chef brought us "the red sauce" which was a warmly seasoned pepper paste - not a runny watered down approximation. The decor was attractive with warm brick and wood accents. A/C worked just right. This new place should be a staple of all those in the neighborhood as well as the out of towners.

Blake B.

Yelp
Been eating Ethiopian for years and this place did not disappoint. We had the Beef Awaze and Doro Wat with red lentils and collard greens. All amazing. Authentic injera hit the spot and great service. Would definitely make this a regular stop!

Eva C.

Yelp
Me and a friend went for lunch and it was so good! The host and server was so sweet and welcoming, and the space is super cute with booths and tables. We shared the veggie platter which came with 8 different sides to go with the injera and it was delicious! If you love Ethiopian food or want to try it this is the spot!!

Jennifer P.

Yelp
This place is SPECTACULAR, and Sammy's son was an amazing server! It was our first time having Ethiopian food, and he really went above and beyond to explain the dishes and even the history behind them. Everything was absolutely delicious, especially as a vegetarian. My boyfriend ordered the fish goulash and was blown away. I got the veggie plate and was wowed. Also, highly recommend the spice tea!

Shannon R.

Yelp
This place is such a good vibe! Excellent food, friendly service with heart, comfortable , and off street parking. We will definitely be back.

Yasir S.

Awesome service and very interesting seeing food in this form. Delicious and loved the experience!

Yelp
Oustanding food! Warm, caring service! Absolutely delightful place! Sammy and his son are excellent hosts, taking care to explain the menu in detail and offer thoughtful suggestions! The sambusas are excellent, both the beef and lentil ones! Ribeye tibs to die for and the vegetarian plate was inspired! And baklava for dessert YUM! Cannot wait to go back!

Mekdes T.

Yelp
If you want Ethiopian in New Orleans - go to Sammy's. I was visiting New Orleans and went to Sammy's my last night, and it was terrific. I highly recommend to anyone who is seeking an Ethiopian restaurant regardless if you have Ethiopian heritage or if it's your first time having Ethiopian food - I'm sure you will enjoy. The menu has options for those who want meat or plant-based options. In addition to great food (& service) - the décor and the art in the restaurant is so beautiful. Highly recommend Sammy's with no hesitations!

Jessica K.

Yelp
A delicious taste of Ethiopian food on a Sunday afternoon. Service was wonderful and a lovely Ambiance. We will be back soon!

Jonathan P.

Yelp
My friend and I accidentally got our dishes mixed up, but nobody complained, because everything was suuuuuper tasty! You gotta check out this new spot

Julia W.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious!! We ordered a vegan platter and lamb tibs. Both dishes really hit the spot. Full of flavor! Even my picky toddler chowed down on the yellow lentils. We will absolutely be ordering again. And again. And again!!

Krystell E.

Yelp
This place was amazing! The staff was so nice and the food had so much flavor. Every plate smelled delicious and the meal was very filling. If I'm ever in New Orleans again, I'll be back for sure :)

Kali M.

Yelp
I was sad to see Addis move out of this space, but very excited to try the Ethiopian restaurant that entered the scene. Our party of 2 enjoyed the intimate, informal, cozy atmosphere - perfect for date night or dinner with friends. We ordered the veggie combo, which our server recommended to us as the best way to try all the veggie dishes they offer. All the veg dishes were good but the sweet peas, collard greens, cabbage, and red lentils really stood out. We also tried the awaze tibs and the Doro wot, which is unique in that it's served on the bone. Everything was hot, fresh, perfectlyspiced, and really tasty. The chef came out and answered some questions for us, and we left feeling well-fed and well taken care of. We'll definitely be back to try to whole fish and some of the lamb dishes. Thanks for a delicious dinner, and welcome to the neighborhood Sammy's! We're happy you're here and we'll see you again soon

james w.

Yelp
Great Service! Very nice people at this establishment. Extremely informative about the food and history. My first time ever eating Ethiopian food and I will be back. Everyone should experience other cultures.

K N.

Yelp
Great food! Service was fast and food was fresh. Also, great value for the price. Would definitely go again.

Seble A.

Yelp
Probably the BEST Ethiopian Restaurant I've been to outside of Ethiopia. Excellent service and Amazing food. 10/10 recommend!!

Ruth A.

Yelp
Flavorful, authentic food and great service! I recommend trying their sambusas and lamb tibs. They also have delicious vegetarian options as well. The interior of the restaurant was also lovely, with nice art and plenty of natural light. Definitely give this spot a chance if/when you're in the New Orleans area!

Laura C.

Yelp
While not in an area that is the first place you'd think of for delicious food, do NOT overlook this spot! Had the absolute BEST dinner here with my family. We started with samosas and the Sammy Special which were both incredible. For our main we had a mixture of almost everything but the vegetables and lamb stole the show! The staff was very kind and the service was great. Can't recommend this place enough. We will be back!

Z A.

Yelp
If you liked the old Addis Nola at this location, you'll still like this. I feel like they even give a bit more protein now than they did before. Everything tastes great.

Jenna B.

Yelp
They are so lovely! The food is incredible everytime, we love the veggie platter, sambusas, and ribeye. It's a really nice quiet spot on broad st.

Eden G.

Yelp
I cannot praise Sammy's enough! It is a true oasis offering food for the body AND the soul. Their food is incredible and their hospitality beyond compare. It is not often that a restaurant owner stops by my table to give me a hug, but it is this kind of generosity of spirit that Sammy's offers. A beautiful setting full of beautiful people and delicious food and tea. Please stop by, you won't regret it. Thank you Sammy's!

John B.

Yelp
We ordered the ribeye tibs and fish goulash. The service and food were amazing. Nice atmosphere as well. Possibly the most authentic and best Ethiopian restaurant in the area.

Anna W.

Yelp
BEST shiro in New Orleans!! Such a friendly and welcoming atmosphere! Will definitely be back soon!
