The Ideal Portland Spots to Load Up on Picnic Supplies | Eater Portland

"This Prescott market is a veritable meze heaven, with everything from house-made dolmas to bowls of beef-topped hummus. For those looking for something more substantial than a few containers of tzatziki, falafel, and labneh, the shop also sells kebabs, gyros, and a one-of-a-kind “falafel burger.” The Roseway Parkway is just across the street and lined with cherry trees." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Where to Eat and Drink in Cully | Eater Portland

"On first glance Samo’s looks like any other market with a small deli counter. But this bright and clean cafe’s menu rivals even the fanciest Middle Eastern restaurants in town, thanks to chef Sam Moussa, who bought the bistro and market from its former owner in October 2018. His Mediterranean dishes are bright and balanced, notably the hummus with beef and the kebabs, dolloped with his fluffy and bold toum garlic sauce." - Kara Stokes

Google
We stopped in for some chocolate cake and baklava - the baklava was like none I'd ever tried. Indescribable. The chocolate cake was also delicious, but I'm hooked on this baklava. The guy working the counter was so sweet and happy. A lovely little spot!

Google
I’m not completely sure if the egg salad is temporarily or permanently taken off the menu; but the egg salad here is amazing! I would come here frequently just to get the egg salad. With the place being a combined deli and convenience store, this place is the perfect ‘stop and go’ lunch spot. The deli has American and Greek food, all is fantastic, but I really hope they bring back the egg salad sandwiches.

Google
Working in the area and decided to stop in for lunch since their prices looked good. The food was a delicious and high quality, staff were friendly and the atmosphere was very warm and relaxed. I'll definitely stop here again.

I really like this place because they are welcoming, and it's a quick stop for breakfast, but please get sugar-free flavorings for espresso coffee ☕️. Thank you!

Google
Very nice neighborhood market and Bistro nice selection of barley pops and great selection of wines. We had the fish and chips washed it all down with ice cold beer the service was excellent the staff were great clean place would highly recommend this place if you’re in the neighborhood.

Google
Quaint Greek bistro. Unassuming on the outside. You order your food at the counter, and they bring you your food. They have an entire wall of refrigerators, full of beer and wine, so there are a lot of options to choose from. Food and alcohol are both very reasonably priced.

Google
Was visiting a friend who lives in this neighborhood and we walked here for lunch. Absolutely delicious. Food is made fresh and the guy working was attentive to our group and very sweet with my daughter. Will definitely come again!

Google
Decent food. Ordered the fish and chips, but they were out so I got chicken. Also ordered the vegetable kabab. The chicken tasted great and so did the fries. Not too greasy or over salted. The kabab was very fresh, the saffron rice was more like just white rice with abit of flavored rice sprinkled on. But was cooked and tasted good. The kabab was covered in some orange sauce which tasted good, and the vegetables had a nice chare on them. Overall good, but with the thick fatty sauce on the kabab and the fried chicken the meal was heavier then I was looking for, but 5 stars cause it did taste good.

Yelp
This sandwich did not disappoint. Four meats! That's right, four different meats. All of my favorites, ham, Turkey, roast beef and pastrami. And, grilled to perfection with American and Swiss cheeses. Absolute sandwich heaven. The steak fries were just right too. I look forward to trying other menu items soon.

Yelp
Super convenient neighborhood store and restaurant. My boyfriend and I were visiting a friend in the area and this was walking distance. We called in an order and walked over. Our order was ready when we got there. There were maybe 3 other customers there. We decided to sit there and eat. Great portion sizes we split the falafel sandwich and fries. Falafel was pretty good and standard. I don't understand the complaints other people wrote about. I'd definitely return. Half ot the shop is a liquor store, they sell lotto. There is also an ice cream counter.

Yelp
Eh, the food was just aight. I tried their 'Best Gyrp in Town' and it definitely fell short lol. The lamb was decent but all the other ingredients in there were pretty lackluster. The steak fries served with were crispy tho. I also tried the Kafta kebab plate w/ rice, pita & tomato wedge. Again, just aight. The kebab was a little dry and not that flavorful. The toum (garlic sauce) it came with was great tho, honestly probly my fav part of the meal. The place itself is pretty cool, little diner/corner mart vibes. The guy there is pretty cool too. They have beer on tap or you can just buy one from the store for half the price lol. Also their homemade pistachio baklava is very tasty.

Yelp
This place is legit! Unexpectedly good food. Gyro was well seasoned, chicken pita sandwich was delicious. The day we came they were out of fries and substituted their house made potato salad. Delicious! Wish we'd found Samo's sooner. Will be back!

Yelp
Interesting place...a real slice of life. Polite, clean and tasty fare. Although I did not get into the menu too deeply, what I had was satisfying.

Yelp
I have drove by this place so many times and never stopped in. It says they have the best Gyros and I should try those but what I did have was their fried Cauliflower!! Yummmmmm!! It came with pita bread and really delicious tahini sauce and a pickle! I seem to be gravitating towards cauliflower lately and with the sauce it was really good. I will come back to try other items next.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious kebabs & really unique baklavas. We'd definitely order again but would call ahead. Because it's fresh it does take 20+ minutes for kebabs. Not sure about the time for anything else. An interesting vibe with a lot of different beverage choices but to-go for me.
google avatar

Yelp
What a gem. The theme is Mediterranean, the buzz on the Kafta Kabab drew me in. Their version is very reminiscent of Persian Koobideh: the basmati rice is up to par, the grilled tomato and topping sauce are excellent. The chicken kabab was also good, but stick with the two beef varieties. The pita is just average. Another menu winner was some sort of regional soup with chicken, it had a umami taste, so good. The choices are vast, including an impressive dessert case. The owner is polite. It took 25 minutes for the kabab so I recommended calling ahead if that's what you want.

Yelp
I can't believe how many times I've driven by Samo's without entering; even more incredulously, how I've been completely oblivious to how awesome it is! My wife and I were looking for a place to have breakfast on Black Friday, and after checking out one place and finding it to be...unremarkable, we declined to order, got up and left, and drove in a direction that had us passing by Samo's. This time, armed with Yelp giving us suggestions, we headed in together, unsure of what to expect. What you *can* expect is something truly special. On the surface, Samo's is a strange amalgam of convenience store, deli, bakery and ice cream parlor. All transactions are handled at the checkout counter, from placing grill orders, purchasing snacks, drinks or entrées from the cold case, buying lotto tickets, beer and wine...you get the idea. This place is popular, too. In addition to the steady stream of customers who came in to purchase something, many others arrived merely to pick up grill/deli orders placed online or over the phone. How's the food? Fantastic! They've got a little of everything, from American to Mediterranean, with all the deli classics. I grabbed a Kofta Kabob, my wife ordered the special Tuna Melt, and we split a delicious, crispy baklava. A couple drinks from the cold case rounded out our order, and we dined in at one of the cute tables by the window. The cashier, who also delivered our food, was polite, amiable and fun to talk to. It might seem a little weird dining in what amounts to a "fancy convenience store" at first, but give Samo's a chance, and you're going to fall for its charms in a hurry. It's hard to beat food this good, in a casual, friendly atmosphere, whether you dine in, or grab and go. Something tells me I won't be just driving by anymore.

Yelp
Ding dong we have a winner! (Can you tell I've been watching Glow Up?) This place is unpretentious, and delicious. I haven't found a lot of good falafel in Portland, but this place has it. The burger is a fun way to enjoy it and the platters are solid too. I wish there was a falafel gyro option! My sister tried the "best gyro in town" and said it was indeed pretty good. They also serve breakfast foods and more typical American sandwiches, and they have huge coolers with lots of beer/soda/drinks. Best part for me is they're in walking distance of home! I'll be thrilled to most over in the future when I don't feel like cooking. My homemade falafel never turned out well anyway.
google avatar

Yelp
Ok....new owners. The food is now off the charts good. I had the french dip special and was pleasantly surprised how tasty it was!!! They have dog friendly outside covered seating and plenty of bike parking as well. Kudos all around.
google avatar

Amanda N.

Yelp
Ordered door dash because I was craving salad. This place did not disappoint especially with the portion sizes. Sorry my boyfriend ate the other half of sandwich before I took the photo. Everything was really good. Simple ingredients sometimes is all you need. Def will be ordering from them for lunch again sometime.

Becky E.

Yelp
Food is wonderful I think the falafel are the best in Portland. The place is a little bit of a cross between a store, a bakery and a deli. Casual. Neighborhood spot.
google avatar

Angela J.

Yelp
Sadly I will not be going back. I went in ordered food and waited in the back. 15 minutes later I went up and asked how much longer. I was told about 15 more minutes. Now I saw people coming and getting food after yet got theirs first. Not a way to keep customers coming back.
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
This is a great little market with fantastic food options. It looks like a mini mart from the outside, but is so much more. They have a great selection of pre-made and made to order foods. Sam is also extremely friendly and helpful.

Maddie B.

Yelp
You guys should really stop putting lettuce on the bottom of your burgers. It makes the whole thing nasty. Edit. I called and he said he's give me a refund and a new burgers still upset but I like the gesture.
google avatar

Christopher P.

Yelp
Really good food and generous portions. Lots of good vegetarian options. We went with the veggie mezza and our friends had the falafel sandwich and the kabobs. Everyone was happy with their meal. Nice service too and a great selection of drinks inside.
google avatar

Amber H.

Yelp
The good is so fresh, and they have big portions. Highly recommend their hummus and kabobs.

Yelp
The only reasons why we had a to-go lunch here: 1. They're in my neighborhood. 2. I was craving anything Greek, specially pastries with spinach, but they didn't have them! 3. My husband had been wanting me to go try them! We both ordered the Best Gyro in Town. It came with wide-cut fries, I would have preferred thinner cuts. They're crispy on the outside, soft on the inside (Ore-Ida commercial remember them?). Service was very friendly! The deli was very clean. The sandwich was 5 stars. Take-out was well packaged. There are lots of interesting things in the deli: sliced cakes from a bakery, coffee, variety of wines, dairy products, good selections of sandwiches.
google avatar

Megan P.

Yelp
The best gyros! We go here all the time and it's one of our go to staples. The owners are so nice and welcoming. All the food is great
google avatar

Alena R.

Yelp
Great food, and great service! A must try! if you need a place to start - try the beef skewer meal with hummus on the side ( so tasty-think fine restaurant hummus!) and pistachio baklava for dessert. 10/10 would recommend!

April J.

Yelp
We made a nice sized order from Samo's via a delivery service to our hotel room a few weeks ago. A side dish of Hummus and Pita came with my order and the "hummus" wound up just being Tahini, which was an unwelcome surprise as I'm not a fan of tahini alone. The baklava were also a bit too small, everything else was very good and filling.

Amy N.

Yelp
Samo's is the perfect neighborhood bistro and market. The delicious food is made-to-order, staff are always so friendly, and they have a great selection of beer and wine to choose from while you wait.
google avatar

Tracy D.

Yelp
I ordered the two skewers entree and side of hummus. I LOVED the hummus and pita bread....delicious! The chicken kabob was also delicious and perfectly cooked. The Kafka had a mixed of herbs in it that I did not care for which is why I gave four stars rather than 5 stars. My food was delivered so I am unable to comment on the staff.
google avatar

Humam T.

Yelp
As the name suggests, this is a restaurant that a Market, so you can find wine, beer, pop, and chips. Grab a beer and drink it there... My food was good. I like the humus and the fried cauliflower, but I especially liked the baklava. It wasn't too sweet. The best thing about this place is the service and the people. They go out of their way to make sure you are happy. The Arabic food menu is fairly limited, but they make up for it with ice-cream and baked stuff. They also have the beyond burger to boot.
google avatar

Nikki N.

Yelp
Great food and even better customer service. Owner knows everyone, remembers what they like & it's a genuinely good guy. Best fries in town!
google avatar

Tricia S.

Yelp
Yum! I've visited the restaurant once but have had Grubhub deliver it about 3 other times. Tonight we ordered in and they were 20 min early, the driver was friendly, and the food was hot. The Royal Burger was perfectly seasoned full of toppings. The fish (and chips) was crisp on the outside and came with 3 large pieces. The Reuben was delish!! The food is well seasoned and they got all of our customization correct.
google avatar

Joshua P.

Yelp
THE best little deli on Prescott street! All the food is good, and they also got some good ice cream for the little ones during a hot day. The employees are exceptionally nice and welcoming, and if you like video poker they got that for you too in the back!
google avatar

Lazarus L.

Yelp
Love this place everything was really good the tuna fish sandwich is amazing the euro is really good of course you have the whole convenience store aspect I will definitely be coming here again.
google avatar

Josh B.

Yelp
Samo bought this deli & market from Ira, who retired this year. Initially, he made few changes to it; the store still sells beer & wine from the cold case, has 6 beers on tap, and 8 flavors of Tilamook ice cream. But, now there's a whole Lebanese menu! Starting last week, Samo launched a light Lebanese menu, including several meze, salads, kebabs, and kafta, in addition the felafel and gyros that Ira had before him. And just about everything comes with a dollop of delicious toum (garlic spread). It's tasty, there's plenty of space, the staff are really nice. And it's the only Middle Eastern food in within two miles. Good for lunch, dinner, and takeout. Samo is also launching a catering option.
google avatar

Raymond E.

Yelp
Very excellent food. Friendly service. Nice selection to choose from. I would most definitely eat here again.
google avatar

Alex P.

Yelp
From the outside, you have no idea the great food that is waiting for you inside! They have a few pre-made items (salads, small sandwiches) but their kitchen offers so much, their menu is double sided! (HA!) While heavy on meat options, they do offer a handful of vegetarian options, too, including a veggie burger. They have a huge selection of beer, some wine options, as well as usual milk, juice, tea type of drinks to-go. The Baklava is so good, you'll want two pieces!
google avatar

The Real J.

Yelp
The people here are great. The food is awesome It's just a nice place to chill if you want to watch a game have a glass of wine or a mug of beer the ambience is Great

Margaret P.

Yelp
Such an odd location but such a great spot! The owners really know food and are always so welcoming and kind. It's always meticulously and smells yummy! I have had several items off the menu now and everything was fresh and delicious! I was lucky enough to work in the neighborhood for several months on a build and went there every other day. They have a great selection of drinks you can buy from the store inside or order beer and cider on tap. They have food to go which is great if you just need to grab something quick but the food comes out fast as well. Their fried zucchini brings me back once a month even though I'm nowhere near the spot anymore. My mom loves the food and the machines in the back! She always wins here!
google avatar

Melanie D.

Yelp
This is my neighborhood's cornerstore. In the short amount of time I've lived on this block I've came to this store multiple times. Very friendly service, and they have a nice menu that serves Mediterranean food. Vegan options as well! They have a wine rack and a lot of cool beverages to choose from. My landlord vouches for their baklava.

Charlie S.

Yelp
Owners a prick and the place is overpriced.. but I guess that's the neighborhood. Drive a few blocks more to 82nd Ave..
google avatar

Jayne H.

Yelp
This place is just amazing. I'm not going to write a long review but I'm going to say just order you'll be happy with everything they have. The chicken kabob is so damn tender but perfectly grilled with a little char. The steak is tender and lightly seasoned ( I add more at home) the hummus side is HUGE with plenty of bread. The basmati rice is amazing too. Even their side sauces are perfect. Overall I absolutely love this place.

Kris K.

Yelp
Sunday. Super hot outside. 11:00am. We'd just picked up a package we had Amazoned to my friend's place off of Prescott. Not a lot around that area. Then I remembered Samo's. Samos is a gorgeous Greek island, so we assumed the food would be Greek. Yes and no. We missed breakfast - darn. The b fast menu options looked yummy. Lunch it would be. While there were some tasty sounding non-Greek options, Bill and I went with a gyro (pronounced year-o). Gyros are basically gyros, but there are certain details that can make one especially delicious. The chef here had those details in spades. The pita was toasted, yet soft. The lettuce was chopped, the red onions & tomato's were thinly sliced and just right in proportion. The tzatzeki also was in perfect proportion. The generous 3 slices of the lamb were still hot. A bite of all the elements was super satisfying. Remember when Red Robin served great steak fries? Yeah, these were better than that. They were on the combo plate hot and perfectly salted. A crisp outside with a soft interior, they made Bill do a little food moan every once in awhile. Reasonably priced. Friendly server. And some hand dipped ice cream indulgence before we left. Samo's Bistro is also a convenience store offering lots of cold beers and soft drinks. Don't let the caged windows scare you off. The place is clean and the food is really well down.
google avatar

Claire M.

Yelp
Betty is hands down the best! She made a point to remember who I was, and always makes me feel like I'm walking into my own families store. Sam is also super welcoming and knows me by name. I get breakfast for my kitchen staff, almost every morning, and the food is some of the best in town. 10/10 will always recommend this place to anyone
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
Ordered from here last night and did a pick up. I got the Gyro with onion rings for myself and a cheeseburger and fries for my partner. Oh, and mozzarella sticks! Everything was really tasty. The ingredients on my gyro tasted fresh and there was just enough sauce. Onion rings and fries were nice and crispy. There was a good amount of salt on the fries. My partner took note of the fact that the burger patty was also properly seasoned which is uncommon in Portland from our experience. I look forward to having a sit down meal at the restaurant.
google avatar

Stephan D.

Yelp
This place has become my go to for breakfast and Mediterranean food. Everything they make is delicious and made with care. Pickup service is always fast and friendly. On top of that, they have a great selection of beer and wine to bring home with your meal. If you're not sure what to order, you can't go wrong with the Gyro, Breakfast Burrito or Mezza platter.
google avatar

Kathryn C.

Yelp
Just moved to the neighborhood and I was so happy to find Samos! It is great for a quick cup of coffee or a beer, and they have a Beyond Burger! You can Veganise it by skipping the mayo and cheese, it was so great to have when I first moved in before I unpacked the kitchen! Staff is fast and friendly. The only thing I would need to bump it up to 5 stars is more vegan options!

John R.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised by the friendliness and enjoyed my time there. I had the Beef and lamb Gyros and side salad, it was really delicious. I felt like family. The tiramisu was outstanding. Was just a great experience. If you look for something different this is it.
google avatar

Melissa D.

Yelp
Great services & sandwiches! Was leaving ikea & wanted to grab sandwiches on the way. Ordered on the phone and picked them up for the whole family. The onion rings were so good they didn't make it all the way home Fish sandwich & turkey club were a hit but those fries were given the top rating.
google avatar

Moe F.

Yelp
The best customer service, food, and environment in town! Definitely a must visit and grub grub!
google avatar

Jody M.

Yelp
Love this little neighborhood gem, staff always friendly, steady flow of customers. Really great burgers, steak fries. They have a small ice cream scoop section, bar in the back of the store and plenty of flat screen tvs to watch different things while you eat. The counter staff are genuinely courteous and come to your table and ask if everything is good. Check it out, definitely quirky and unique.
google avatar

Kristin M.

Yelp
Excellent. Hot and freshly cooked! The sandwich was perfectly balanced and I loved the addition of the fetta. Sandwich took a bit longer than I expected but it was well worth the wait. The woman who served me was so friendly. I will be coming back.
google avatar

Wicked L.

Yelp
Amazing beyond meat burgers and the owner Sam is super nice. This place is worth the try!

Alex B.

Yelp
Ended up buying the double cheeseburger and some fries to go. Decided to sit down and take a few bites before I head out.. it turned out so good I had to stay and finish the whole thing!!! 10/10 would recommend their food and the person working register has great customer service! Highly recommend!!!

Bob W.

Yelp
WE just left Samo's We've really thought their Reuben Sandwich was the best. But NOT TODAY. The meat was not corn beef, at least the way it's been in the past. It was chewy and looked like ham. We've always told people to go to Samo's for the Reuben, no longer. We will have to look for another place for Rueben Sandwiches. VERY DISAPPOINTING!!! Bob and Virgie
