Iron Chef Morimoto Surprise Opens New Los Angeles Restaurant Tonight | Eater LA

"This new Sa’Moto, opened by internationally known chef Masaharu Morimoto of Iron Chef fame, surprised diners with a pan-Asian concept inside the well-known Doheny Room in West Hollywood. I found the menu and name unique to Los Angeles so far, playing on the Doheny’s lounge-y vibe while offering unexpected dishes ranging from laksa soup and dumplings to inventive combinations like raclette paired with gochujang and heartier plates such as sticky ribs, all served with lots of cocktails and style. The venture is a collaboration with SBE founder Sam Nazarian’s Disruptive Restaurant Group, Morimoto plans to expand Sa’Moto to New York City in the fall, and reps say the restaurant will soon be available on DRG’s C3 platform for virtual kitchens and compact food-hall setups; reservations are available now." - Farley Elliott

Food was okay at best (Americanized Japanese food) but so overpriced. For that it's totally not worth it. Location at Doheny room was pretty but doesn't make up for the okay food and exuberant pricing. Here was our order: Toro tartare- beautiful presentation, more like an amuse bouche for $34 Yellowtail carpaccio- Okay Shishito peppers- Okay, but it's hard to get this wrong Duck tacos- Good, basically Peking duck but in a fried wonton skin "taco" Hamachi tacos- Good, probably the best thing we had Kushi-age with shrimp and mushroom- Okay, but the shrimp was over cooked. It's served with a ranch tartare (which is just ranch dressing, strange and seemed cheap) Spicy tan tan noodles- Okay, wasn't really rich in flavor and not that spicy

There are a few Vegan options on the menu. The Vegetable Roll and Vegetable Dan Dan noodle are delicious! 🌱 Ate here with friends before a show next door at the Troubadour. Excellent service!

Don't sleep on Sa'Moto at Doheny Room! Excellent presentation and customer service. Cuisine is delicious, everything was tasty. Cant wait to go back to try more. Great ambiance if you're looking for a fun dinner spot. Full bar and separate sushi bar, what else would you need!

I loved the vibes of Sa’Moto. Super cute place to go to for date night, girls night, celebration of something or even solo at the bar. The atmosphere just sets an amazing mood. Personally i was not a big fan of the smoked ceviche three ways, not to say the dish is nasty because that’s not the case. I just found the tuna to be unappealing to my taste(which is unfortunate because i love tuna). The yellowtail i slightly enjoyed and the salmon was my favorite i was able to eat majority of the compared to the few bites of the tuna. The sushi rolls came in and saved the day for me! Fresh and flavorful. This was my first time trying soft shell crab tempura (OMG I’ve been missing out). (Not pictured) but my group also ordered the spicy edamame, very delicious they do not hold back on the spicy lol, as well as the mochi ice cream for dessert which was the perfect ending to our girls night dinner. The service was very quick and our waitress was amazing. We did go up to the doheny room lounge on the second floor, slightly small but nonetheless still a great vibe, Bomb drinks not too strong but strong enough, and good music it made for The ultimate combo of a good night out. I love the convenience of valet being offered for $15, or $25 after 10pm.

The atmosphere and energy was amazing. The food arrived to our table in record time, and our waiter was on point the entire time. I was VERY IMPRESSED and will most definitely come again.

Probably a great spot for a young gaggle pregaming for the clerbs - but not my jam. Don't expect much nigiri or any sashimi from the sushi bar. The one non-roll on the sushi menu was the Doheny Combination. Though I don't recall the description on the menu mentioning a roll, it had a very strange one prominently featured and swimming in sweet sauces. Food, cocktails and the one sake option were generally sweet. Not bad but not great. Service was good and super friendly. Vibe is young and upbeat. Loud untz untz music. Not fine dining. Not what I would have expected from Morimoto.

Drink is nicer. I enjoy the drink here more than food.

This place is best place. My family and me had dinner in here. We did shrimp tempura roll and yellowtail sashimi and salmon sashimi. We tried Lobster , oysters. Everything is very fresh. Sushi chefs are very nice. Sticky pork and gyza are so delicious. We will back again.
