Sam’s Hideaway - Review - Homestead - Miami - The Infatuation

"Sam’s Hideaway calls itself “the oldest southernmost tavern on the mainland USA.” While we can’t quite fact-check that, we can confirm that the Florida City establishment on the edge of Miami-Dade civilization is a flawless dive bar. The wooden interior is frozen in time and occupied by a friendly cast of regulars. Last time we were here, the bartender shook our hands, introduced herself as Rabbit, and remembered our names for the entirety of our stay, which included free jello shots to celebrate a customer’s 62nd birthday. Bloody marys are garnished with a Slim Jim, and on NFL Sundays, complimentary hot dogs sit in a Crock-Pot. Sam’s is a worthy stop on any road trip to Key West, but it’s also a destination in and of itself for South Florida dive bar aficionados." - Ryan Pfeffer

Google
Great little dive bar ... staff is excellent, Rabbit, CoCo, Robin, Geo, and Milan are all very good tenders of the bar. The patrons are friendly. TVs, Pool Tables and other games too. A little off the beaten trail, but well worth a little side-trip.

Google
Nice lil spot to hangout, meet some cool people and have some cold beer. Prices are reasonable, great service and always a nice vibe

Google
A great bar. Good atmosphere, better barman, pool, good music. All.you need

Google
Great little bar, seems to attract mostly locals. Reasonable prices, good service and a couple of pool tables. A patio would be nice. They do have some bar food but it is a fairly limited selection. Music is a jukebox. There are two pool tables and some games.

Google
Typical little Florida Dive Bar, friendly folks and good service and reasonably priced adult beverages and a couple of Pool tables, not much more one can ask for in a local dive bar... will definitely return

I ended up here after Gilbert's closed on a Saturday night. plenty of street parking. "Cash only bar". Bar pretty big. Inside is much bigger than what it appears outside. A fun surprise. It was karaoke night. 2 pool tables. Enough chairs for eating but most just stand and hang. 1 bathroom though. Large equipped for handicap but limited on availability. I took a picture of their sign . Found the last line hysterical. Never been here before. I have a feeling I might be back. It does look like it has been gone thru a few changes through its lifetime. But many many locals come here. And it is a bit hidden so makes it feel way more local. Which I really like.

Yelp
Love!!!! They say you only know about this spot if a local told you and everything was DIVINE! My husband and I adored the food and drinks and wow, everything was perfect! I love eating at local spots when traveling and this hit the spot!

Yelp
My favorite bar in the area. Right off US-1. Cheap beer and drinks & friendly bartender. If you're looking for a bar in Homestead I recommend this joint.

Yelp
Drinks are good. Crowd was subtle. Seemed to be more of a biker crowd but they were nice. Has updated juke box and TV's. I'm here on a Saturday afternoon so it was calm. Looked at Yelp reviews which made me explore. Not disappointed:-)

Yelp
Loved the place. If you are looking for a cozy place with awesome drinks. Handcrafted Bloody Mary's. This will be my new stop on the way to and from the Keys. Thanks for the warm hospitality and the love and care put into making the drinks.

Yelp
I have the funniest story about this place. So I was on the search for this abandoned Insane Asylum on Krome (which by the way I never found) & I passed this place amid the search and decided to stop, have a beer & a slim Jim (Yes, it's on the menu) while I googled stuff on the exact location on my phone. I walk in to this divey bar dressed head to toe in my mamichula gear asking the patrons if they had heard of this spot. This one guy with a Vietnam Veteran Hat was very intrigued with my story yet confused on why I was searching for this. He simply looks up and says "Well, you found it. We're all mad here. As a matter of fact, we're invisible. This is all just a figment of your imagination. We're not even here". I chuckled at first but then it sank. We are all just mad. There's slim Jim on the menu and incredibly cheap beer for the biker crowds. I love history & this is the Oldest & most southernmost tavern on the eastern coast of the continental U.S. (I hope I worded that properly) and coming here is like slipping into a time capsule and reappearing in another place and time. For years I couldn't remember the name of the place and vowed to always come back. A quick google search has fixed that. If you're quirky like me- then you'll enjoy this spot!

Yelp
This bar checks off all the boxes of a good dive. If I lived in Florida I'd grow old and die in this place. Cheers.

Yelp
Great Dive Bar... if you like dive bars...I love them. Nice prices, portions, approachable clientele. Good place to watch sports. Even better place for a pool game, no quarrels, just very good players and a great time. As mentioned I love dive bars. and I would say this is a very safe place...they are not the type to tolerate much misbehaving, but hey it is a dive bar. See ya again soon Amber. No food, no credit cards, a little smokey.

Yelp
Dive bar. So fun. Friendly service. Wall to wall packed when we went. We loved it! But don't go if you're looking for a quiet drink, posh atmosphere or prompt service (although it wasn't bad for a packed house and one bartender. She rocked it!) we will definitely make this a stop on our way to the Keys!

Yelp
A wonderful spot for the nostalgic part of you that loves old florida! A last stop tavern before heading through the keys! Laurie is kick ass cool

Yelp
Everything a dive bar should be - cheap, raucous, and off the beaten path. I loved it and went there twice in the two days i was in the area. I even bought a t-shirt. :-).

Yelp
By far my favorite bar in Homestead! Come get sassy at Sam's with our very own Sassys Food Shack! Can't get any better than beer and delecious burgers! They even have weekend specials too! But most important, we've got the best bartenders there are! MARY MAY AND LAURIE CASE!

Yelp
Sam's is perfect for what you want in an old school divebar! Far enough from the city where you get the local vibe from the obvious regulars, cheap beers on draft, music only when someone dropped $1 in the juke box for 3 songs, $1 pool tables, and a fun divey ambiance (including a few cracked windows near the pool table either from wild shots, anger release after missing, or bar fights - let your imagination run wild!). The joint was quite busy for an early Wednesday evening and everyone from all walks of life were sociable.

Yelp
Authentic Old Florida establishment, hidden in plain sight at the end of Krome Avenue. The old wooden bar is a clue as to how long this building has been here, said to be the oldest Southernmost tavern on the US mainland. A couple of pool tables, cheap beer on tap, some decent liquor, but not a wide selection. It's a meeting place for many locals and a few travelers now and then. Five girls, good servers and conversationalists, take shifts at the bar. Sam comes in for a couple of hours in the late afternoon. They have a 24 hour liquor license and they've been known to stay open very late for the hard working FPL maintenance crews on 24 hour duty. Bring cash because they have no idea what a credit card is, but there is an ATM in the back. No food. Picnic table out front. Smoking is allowed, cigars outside only.

Yelp
It's one of those bars if you start a conversation with a regular you end up staying for hours. Reminds me of home. Music is turned up and everyone was very friendly.

Yelp
Florida Dive bar at its finest. $7 for 3 beers and free hotdogs on Sundays can't beat that. A mix of locals and bikers, everyone is friendly .

Yelp
I do not really know what to say, ha ha. A bar with full, some strange people. Gets the feeling the only local bar where everyone is seen after work, far out in the Middle of nowwhere. But I like it anyway. The bartender Michelle was able to give the drunk male guests comebacks if they did not behave. Dive bar deluxe!

Yelp
Love coming for drinks and pool. Mary is hands down one of the sweetest baretenders I've ever come across. I'll forever come here late nights to chill.

Doris R.

Yelp
Sam's is a hole in the wall kind of place it has a great atmosphere and we love going there. If you ever plan on visiting make sure you go when Mary is not there. Had it not been for her I would have given it five stars.

Yelp
They come down the homestead, which is pretty often for work. I always stay at the Holiday Inn across the street, I walk out of my hotel ant 25 steps away is Sam's Hideaway. A real locals bar, everyone knows everyone and makes you feel welcome. A great place to feel good and have a good drink for a nice price.

Yelp
Some people will read this review and say to themselves, WTF is this girl thinking? She actually LIKES this dive bar and gave them 4 stars? If you've read any of my reviews before, you know that I'm a true lover of a dive bar. The dive-ier the better. The dirtier the better. The more biker boys, the BETTER! Imagine this: a dirt parking lot tucked away off Krome Avenue near the Holiday Inn. The door leads immediately to a small, dark bar packed with leathery locals who look like they have been sitting and nursing their beer for several hours. Scattered about are some bikers messing around with the dated poker machines and a few tourists pumping dollar bills into the fancy touchscreen jukebox (which happens to be the most sophisticated thing in this place). Do not expect to be served cuisine here. They used to have chili dogs for a $1, but they did away with that. The best you'll get are some frozen, from-a-box "sliders" that are quickly nuked and served on a flimsy paper plate with a neon pickle chip garnish for your dining pleasure. This past weekend when my plans to go to Key Largo to Jimmy Johnson's pool were squashed by a 6-car pile up on US1 that sat for hours, I made an illegal u-turn and found my way back to Sam's for a much needed frosty PBR in a bottle for $2. Just because I enjoy a good dive bar doesn't mean I should be mistaken for someone from The People of Walmart Gang you see flaunting their cray cray on the Internet. I appreciate the simplicity of a dive - a good old- fashioned pub with friendly service, no frills, good rocking tunes without the $15-20 per drink South Beach vibe. I also enjoy all the bathroom graffiti in the ladies room (one spot on the wall simply stated, "my neck, my back, my.......") Good advice, Girl. Good advice indeed. PS - CASH ONLY.
