Don Alfonso 1890 San Barbato

"Run by the Iaccarino family, who are renowned for their Mediterranean cuisine at Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi (some dishes from which feature on the menu here), this restaurant owes much to its talented chef Donato De Leonardis. His excellent cuisine includes regional influences with a hint of exotic flavour in dishes that are balanced, harmonious and often original without becoming excessively extravagant. The restaurant occupies the first floor of the luxury San Barbato Resort, which has a strong and committed approach to sustainable resource management. The modern, spacious dining room overlooks the illuminated fountain in the hotel garden." - Michelin Inspector

My family and I stumbled upon this lovely resort while driving by one day. We were intrigued so we made the decision to reserve a room. Our choice proved to be a delightful one as this hotel surpassed all our expectations. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the gracious Domenico, who warmly escorted us to our impeccably clean and spacious modern room. The room boasted two balconies, one of which overlooked the picturesque pool, adding to the overall charm. My daughter couldn't wait to take a dip. We ended up spending most of our time at the pool. Francesco from the pool bar was very friendly and accommodating, he made our experience even more enjoyable. In summary, our stay at this resort was nothing short of extraordinary.

Really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The staff was extremely accommodating. My kids had a great time. A special shoutout to Francesco at the bar he was great and very attentive making our stay especially enjoyable. The gym and spa / sauna are also very nice. Would definitely stay here again.

We arrived in the early afternoon during a biking trip through Basilicata and Puglia. We were tired and baked by the summer sun. We were looking for something to eat and drink. We were greeted by Domenico, the manager, who kindly answered our questions. The staff provided us with an excellent service all around. A class act.

Good place to stay. Rooms ok but shower water all over the floor. Careful stepping out, I almost slipped. Roof top bar is a big disappointment! No service, hurry to close before closing time. Almost self service if you come after 10 PM. The saving grace was the wonderful guy from Cuba at the reception. He arranged a wonderful wine for us by the poolside after the rooftop...

I cannot express just how happy my girlfriend and I were with our stay here. The resort feels like something straight out of Dubai, with modern and SUPER CLEAN finishes. The rooms are large and extremely comfortable, and there are many eating options to choose from. But the true gem of the resort are the staff. Each and every one of them were welcoming, friendly, and went out of their way to make our stay feel like one of the best we've ever had! I cannot recommend this property enough..

Review Sanbarbato resort spa & golf revealed to be an oasis of luxury, comfort and wellness- as a whole. I recently had a brief journey there, with my wife and my newborn child, with the aim of escaping the daily routine and distress. My experience in Sanbarbato overcame every expectation I may had: each and every Member of the staff is perfectly prepared to encounter and satisfy all the Customer’s needs - even the ones the client itself wasn’t aware of. In addition, in this period of the year, you can breath a warm and Christmas-sy atmosphere, which makes everything more intimate and familiar, preserving the inner sophistication of the place.

Historically, Basilicata hasn't had much in the way of choice for contemporary high quality accommodation, so San Barbato is a welcome addition. If you only had time for a couple of nights and wanted to experience a great resort with amazing food then you'll be hard pressed to find a better choice than here.||||The hotel itself isn't large with around a couple of dozen rooms in each of the buildings, yet the facilities, such as the huge pool are as if they're designed for a hotel with hundreds more rooms. This means that it never feels crowded even when the hotel is full. There is a lovely spa area too with an array of steam rooms, a sauna and experience showers. It's a nice area to unwind in and if you're feeling more active then there's a well equipped gym too.||||The rooms have the same distinctive style as the rest of the property, although I would note that given that it's only been open for a few years or so, in some aspects it seems to be ageing somewhat prematurely so perhaps needs some extra care and attention in places to prevent it from becoming tired before its time. The air conditioning in our room could have been quieter too, but these are relatively minor niggles.||||The quality of the food offering is outstanding. The breakfast comprises either a savoury selection of cheese, bread and cold cuts or the sweet option of four different pastries all made in house to standards that would put many Parisian Palace hotels to shame. Both the ingredient quality and execution is top notch.||||For dinner you have the choice of what is probably the world's best pizza (Franco Pepe) or Don Alfonso (see separate review) which is a sister restaurant to the legendary 2* Michelin Don Alfonso. The restaurant here very deservedly has a Michelin star in its own right too. The same attention to detail and lightness of touch is evident as well as some of the Don Alfonso signature dishes also being included on the menu. The price point here is great value with a four course menu coming in at less than EUR 100 a head.||||All of the staff have a great attitude and really want to ensure that guests are happy and enjoying their stay. They are proud of the product and as a guest you can really feel this sense of local pride.||||All in all a great resort which offers everything from relaxing by the pool to top class local cuisine, it's got every base covered and it's less than a 2 hour drive from the airport so if you're after some Italian hospitality where everything is under "one roof" then San Barbato is the place to go.

Undoubtedly 5 stars for the spa! We got lucky that we were assisted by the manager of the spa, Ms Lucia. Spa is very clean, with different tours and rooms. Ms. Lucia has lot of experience, and all our pain and stress vanished with her treatments. The Salt room was awesome, like going back into mommy’s womb. Please try it, and won’t regret.
