This cozy Upper East Side gem serves up authentic Neapolitan wood-fired pizzas, hearty panuozzi, and a delicious array of pastas in a charming, rustic space.
"San Matteo Pizzeria e Cucina on the Upper East Side is opening for lunch on Election Day after receiving numerous customer requests. The restaurant features the Americana pizza, which includes tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, and Mike’s Hot Honey." - Alexis Benveniste
"San Matteo serves more than 25 types of pizzas, and, in the very unlikely event that you need even more pizza-adjacent food from this Upper East Side Italian spot, they also serve panuozzi—which are like giant sandwiches made with pizza dough. To place a delivery order, call them at 212-861-2434." - team infatuation

"If you want to sit down and eat a pizza on the Upper East Side, you should be going to San Matteo. They make Neapolitan-style pies in a wood fired oven that you can see in the back of the space, and almost all of them are under $20. You can also get a panuozzo here, which is pretty much just a very large sandwich made with pizza dough. There’s also plenty of seating, and you can always sit at the bar and watch sports on TV if it’s a Tuesday night and you don’t want to talk to anyone." - bryan kim
"You could go to San Matteo every night for a month, and never have the same thing. Similar things, sure, but never the same thing. This neighborhood Italian spot on the UES serves a bunch of different pastas, pizzas, and some mains like chicken parm and porchetta. Occasionally, though, we’ll come here and order a panuozzo. It’s a type of sandwich made with pizza dough, and it’s exactly as good as it sounds." - hannah albertine, bryan kim, matt tervooren
