San Wei - Review - Midtown - New York - The Infatuation

"For people in the very specific situation of craving dumplings while inside the underground Grand Central dining concourse, Veselka is no longer your only option. Just a few feet away, you'll find San Wei, a quick-service Chinese spot that has another location in the Queens Center mall. They also serve noodles, rice bowls, and a classic pastrami sandwich (you read that right) we're curious to try. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Molly Fitzpatrick

Tom Colicchio Changes the Menu Format at Craft After 24 Years | Eater NY

"A noodle and bubble-tea shop originating in Elmhurst known for an unexpected pastrami offering will bring hand-pulled noodles and boba to a Grand Central location later this season." - Melissa McCart

Google
Tried their Shanghai style chicken leg noodle and pork&shrimp wontons today. The texture of the wontons was nice and bouncy because of the chopped up shrimps. However, I thought it will come in less soup and a stronger sauce. It was a bit too washed down for my liking. The noodles were nice. Looks like they already stirred it before they pack it, but the bottom was extremely salty. The sauce was okay, too salty and not flavorful enough. It’s supposed to be spring onion oil with flavored soy sauce based, but I almost didn’t tasted any spring onions in it. The chicken thigh was nice, and glistening. The flavor was nice, too. It is a good choice for a quick bite on the train, but not worth it going there all the way just for the food. The staff were nice and friendly and offered me a tiny cup of tea. It was chill and lemony. It was delicious.

This is my second time trying them, similar to other people. I had the soup dumpling, which had holes, and some of them were packed upside down, making it difficult to pick up. They were still pretty okay though I gave them the benefit of the doubt being a fast eat in Grand Central I also had the tonkatsu ramen, the broth was rich and creamy, and I didn't expect it. The noodles, though, were either too cooked or undercooked as they kind of clumped together, making the texture not so favorable. The next day, I decided to have pork and chive dumplings; they were okay, not the best, but okay. Good for eating quickly before the train, but there is a 9-minute wait time. I also had the chicken noodles. I noticed it was the exact same noodles as the ramen, and again heavily clumped together. The flavor was almost identical to the ramen. For me, the flavor isn't worth its price. I'm thoroughly disappointed. Tomorrow I'll try their bubble tea if it's good, and I'll update my review.

Google
Ordered the short rib beef stew over rice was hearty and comforting. The beef was tender and well-braised, and the bok choy kept it fresh and balanced. Portion size was actually generous, a good meal at grand central place

Google
I ordered the pork and chives dumplings (10 pieces). I thought the price was reasonable for the amount of dumplings that came in the order. I placed my order at a kiosk and then waited about 15 minutes for the food, which I felt was a long time for a busy place like this. I got my food which came with a couple packets of soy sauce and a small container of chili oil. The flavor of the dumplings were very bland. The chives were plentiful in the filling, but it was too much. The chili oil helped a little but it did not do much to save them. Overall, the food was quite bland and I would skip getting them next time.

San Wei popped up at the Grand Central dining concourse and was excited to give it a try--it's super convenient location! I ordered the pork and shrimp wontons in spicy sesame sauce. I wasn't expecting a soup/broth base. It was very mild, not spicy at all and I didn't really get any sesame flavor, which was a bit of a letdown. The wontons themselves were solid, just wished it was more spicy.. I also tried the Shanghai style noodles with chicken leg. The noodles were great! I love the chili oil it came with. Also, very mild... The chicken leg was unfortunately... bland. :( Overall, not bad at all. I'd go back to try other noodle options and definitely want to check out the pastrami sandwich next time.

Google
Authentic. I got the 12.99 beef with rice. It tastes good. And was quick. I think the price is very fair too considering $10 gets you a small chicken burger at shake shack. So happy to have this option added at Grand Central!

Google
The food I ordered was extremely disappointing — cold, flavorless, and downright horrible. The soup dumplings were especially bad and absolutely disgusting: old, dry, and even full of holes, which meant there was no soup at all. The pork xiao bao was also cold and stale. My order came out far too quickly to have been made fresh — I placed it at 4:01pm and had it in my hands by 4:05pm. By 4:10pm, after finding a seat and trying two dumplings (the second just to give them another chance), I was completely done, and decided to take a picture of the soup dumplings. This was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had at Grand Central. Definitely not a place I’ll return to, and I would not recommend it to anyone.

Google
Ordered a pretty tasty fruit tea and the pork and chive dumplings. I was super excited for the dumplings, but the filling was completely raw. I ate a few before I noticed, so now I'm just hoping I don't get food poisoning. I saw that I'm not the first person to write a review addressing this, so I sincerely hope you'll do better in the future as raw and undercooked pork is a huge risk for serious food-borne illnesses and parasites!

Yelp
Swung by this newish stall in the GCT food court and was pleasantly surprised! They have a good selection of both food and drinks and pretty quick service. I enjoyed the flavours of both noodle dishes we tried - I'd come back again to try more! Great addition to the food court / area.

Yelp
San Wei had the longest line at the food stalls in Grand Central when we were trying to grab dinner before a broadway show. Noodles were fresh and flavorful, but had a bit of an acquired taste. We got the Shanghai Scallion Oil noodle and San Wei mixed noodle. The San Wei noodle had a lot more food, but the meat was a bit fatty.

Yelp
I think they're a pop-up (?) in the Grand Central dining concourse but nonetheless glad I came across it! They had a lot of different options for wontons and noodles + other dishes as well but I've always wanted to try scallion oil noodles, so I got that and my mom got the pork & shrimp wontons. Fell in love with the scallion oil noodles as it was slightly sweet but super savory with a hint of mala, and they were generous with the bokchoy which was a pleasant surprise. I'm also obsessed with cilantro so this definitely satisfied that craving. The noodles themselves were on the chewier side (which I liked) and the sauce itself was rich and aromatic, without being too dry or greasy. The pork & shrimp wontons came in a broth that was clean but still flavorful, not overly salty. They definitely use spices but the soup itself + the noodles earlier I wouldn't say are necessarily spicy (as someone who usually orders medium spice). There was only one person working in the kitchen but the food still came out in about 15 minutes so I'd say service was great! We ate at some high tables in the area near the other stores which may or may not have seats (we just stood lol). They also have a variety of drinks which I'll have to check out next time!!

Yelp
I don't know why the google reviews are much lower for this spot, but I loved my egg and tomato noodles here. The sauce was so flavorful and the noodles were the perfect amount of cooked. It really hit the spot for a quick lunch meal. I was able to order on the kiosk and get my lunch in under 10 minutes!

Yelp
They offer lots of refreshing drinks. I was excited to see this as a new option, downstairs at Grand Central. I have yet to try it, but it looks promising.

Yelp
Had to grab a quick bite before dashing off to the US Open, and this was the perfect spot. Dishes were reasonably priced and quickly and flavorfully made. I highly recommend the Shanghai Style Noodle with Chicken Leg though make sure the chicken leg is actually in the bowl before you leave because the worker conveniently forgot to include it in mine. I think it was an honest mistake, but thankfully I realized before I left the station.

Yelp
I arrived in New York City late and was relieved to find this restaurant at Grand Central Station still open. I ordered a combination bento box with two proteins, along with the San Wei noodles and Chongqing mixed noodles. Service was quick--the food was ready in just a few minutes. It made for a delicious late-night to-go meal, which we enjoyed back at the hotel. There is no table but the service was prompt and items were packed nicely for a quick transport to the hotel.

Yelp
Very great quality for the price! It can be hard to find a well rounded take away meal in midtown under $13-15 but San Wei delivers. I got the Shanghai noodles with a chicken leg, and it was perfect. A mildly spicy sauce and the chicken leg was incredibly well marinated and seasoned (not sure if things changed since the other review mentioned "bland" chicken below), and some delicious greens on top. We also got a berry drink with cheese foam and to my surprise they got out the blender and actually made the drink using various containers and ingredients. So many places offer pre-made or mix-based drinks for the same price or even a couple bucks more. This was a pleasant surprise that they actually made something worth the price! Other dishes and drinks also looked really good. Overall very glad this is a new option at Grand Central and I look forward to having it as a go-to place amidst some of the greasier, lower quality (and higher priced) options.

Yelp
Food was delicious! Highly recommend the beef stew. Definitely my favorite on the menu but followed by a close second with the pork belly. Rich was also great, there was a mishaps and he took care of my family and I efficiently and was also friendly. Thanks Rich! Good food good workers and already thinking about my next visit. : )

Yelp
Chinese place making GREAT pastrami and fantastic dumplings. I can eat both of them everyday. Don't skip out on their drinks. Delicious and refreshing.

Yelp
A great noodle shop! Very authentic and real. I have been China many times and the flavors are the exact the same, unbelievable! Their San Wei mixed noodle and Chongqing pork and pea are strongly recommended.
