Recently, I ordered the beef noodle soup with an additional order of short rib beef soup and side of rice for my husband, along with dumplings, from San Wei at Grand Central Station. When I arrived home and opened the soup, I immediately noticed that it was lacking enough broth. The noodles appeared to have absorbed nearly all of it, leaving alot less broth in the container. In the past, this dish has always come with a proper amount of flavorful broth, so this was very unusual.
Unfortunately, the broth itself was also quite bland. While the meat was flavorful and there were sufficient pieces included, the broth lacked the seasoning and depth of flavor that I normally expect. It tasted slightly of chili, but otherwise had very little salt or richness. It was somewhat bland. Since the broth is such an essential part of this dish, it significantly affected the overall experience.
I have ordered from San Wei multiple times and have generally had good experiences. There was a prior occasion where I ordered soup dumplings and received dumplings without the expected soup filling. However, tonight’s issue with the noodle soup was particularly disappointing because I was genuinely looking forward to it.
Additionally, I noticed during pickup that some of the prepared foods, such as bok choy, rice, beef stew meat, and chicken items, are left uncovered. Given that Grand Central is an open-air environment with heavy foot traffic, this raised hygiene concerns for me.
