So hubby and I, plus the kid by default decided to forgo the free breakfast at our hotel in favor of exploring local eats. With that said, we wanted to save most of our blow out meals for dinner. Thus I was happy to come across this place.
Anyway, like Charme C. mentions, this spot is located inside a gas station. Not near it or attached to it, but inside it. Yeah, that's right. And I don't know about you, but when I think of gas station food, a phrase I use VERY loosely, my mind goes to the wrinkled-like-a-prune, sketchy looking hot dogs the high school kids snack on at my neighborhood fuel center. No worries of that here:
This is food made with love. In fact, I had the chance to chat with the friendly chef/owner and from what I recall, she is a home cook who decided to grab the opportunity to open a restaurant in this location in an effort to provide affordable, thoughtfully prepared food to locals in need of such an option.
As for our breakfast, I adored my Grit Cakes, something I'd never tried before. They are like a lighter, less dense version of Polenta Cakes, if you're familiar, but made with Grits of course. Hubby wasn't as enamored with his Breakfast Burrito, but I took a bite and it was definitely solid and fresh tasting, especially for the price. Kid, who's never encountered a Chicken Biscuit he didn't like, was happy with his pick.
Interestingly, while conversing with the aforementioned chef/owner, she confided that she makes her Biscuits using only cream and no butter. So know that the Biscuits here are soft and tender, but different. Personally, I prefer the flavor and flakiness that butter adds. But that's me.
The dining space for this little eatery is off to the side, away from the rest of the Gas Station. But don't go expecting much in terms of ambiance. There's some seating, and for us, at least, it was perfectly fine for a quick, uber casual breakfast. I kind of wish we'd had time to stop in again to try the Beet Sandwich that Hillary E. raves about. Maybe next time and I really hope there will be one.:)
