"As you make your way out to Sand Hill Kitchen, the road becomes abruptly rural, with rolling farmland, winding roads, and the Blue Ridge Mountains emerging every now and then. Eventually, you’ll hit a BP gas station on the outskirts of West Asheville, which is exactly where you’ll find Sand Hill Kitchen and the best fried chicken in town. As spiritual as the crispy, buttermilk-soaked chicken sandwich tastes, it’s certainly not this breakfast and lunch spot’s only claim to fame. The cheeseburger, breakfast burrito, and biscuits are just as good, and if you’d like a lighter, plant-based option, the pastrami-cured roasted red beet sandwich is a sleeper hit. You can order at the drive-thru window or settle into one of the five-ish tables in the gas station, a set-up that’s surprisingly homey and spacious for a petrol stop." - laura hackett

"Don’t let the location of this restaurant fool you. It may be located in a gas station, however, Sand Hill Kitchen has been a lunch staple for Ashevillians, serving award-winning fried chicken sandwiches topped with homemade dilly pickles since 2017." - Lyndsay Cordell

Good stuff. Great service. Busy yet quick. Want to try more things on menu. Will be back. Had Winners Burger and Reuben. Both are great, lots of flavor. The side of pickles were terrific. It's definitely worth stopping in for a bite to eat. I'm excited to go back for the breakfast menu. I want to try the burrito and a bowl.

Google
Fantastic, hidden gem in a gas station out of West Asheville. We were met with friendly service. The chicken sandwiches and grilled cheese were fabulous. Prices very reasonable. I am glad I decided to check it out.

Google
Don't let the fact its in a gas station fool you. The food here rules! We tried the famous chicken sandwich and burger (both were amazing and the chicken sandwich is definitely up there with the best I've ever had). Everything was fresh and you could tell it was all made with care. We had a mixup with our order time because of a timezone issue on my laptop, so they were amazing about it, and made our order fresh as soon as we showed up. The pickup window outside is super convenient, too. Definitely will repeat next time we're in the area!

Google
We all know the best food joints are "holes in the wall," gas station spots, etc. Sand Hill falls into this category, with the added bonus of variety. They aren't limited to the comfort foods, they also make great salads etc. Sometimes I want both! Also, for those who want something fancier than corner store vibes, Sand Hill took care to add some chic flare. Come early at prime times because plenty of people know their secret.

Google
5 stars— An Asheville gem!!! Sand Hill Kitchen is my go-to lunch spot and has been for a while now. Everything on the menu is a win—chicken sandwich? Incredible. Reuben? Unreal. Burgers? Don’t even get me started. Ordering online is super simple, and pickup is always quick and smooth. I find myself checking their site just to see what the daily specials are because they’re always doing something creative (and delicious). Plus, the staff? Nicest crew ever. Friendly, fast, and just genuinely awesome people. Can’t recommend it enough!!!

Pat Kazanjian

Google
Always excellent. Consistent. Fairly priced. Fried Chicken Sandwich is one of the best around. House made pickles 12/10.

Google
Stopped here in on my way into Asheville, based on a local friend’s recommendation. Do not be put off by it being in a gas station, this place was popping and for good reason! Everything was made from scratch and to order (and still made fast). Staff was fantastic. A little off of I40 but worth the five minute detour if you’re looking for a quick bite that’s way way better than any chain fast food.

Hannah Randall

Google
Sand Hill Kitchen is consistently great. Been going for years and recommend everything on the menu, especially the breakfast burrito, fried chicken sandwich, and the Rueben. The staff is always so friendly. Located in a gas station with some seating and a pick up window for take out.

Frances W.

Yelp
So good! I've been following this restaurant for quite some time now and I finally got to visit and it was worth the wait. I got a Reuben which was perfectly cooked, the meat was great quality. The home chips were good as well and seasoned nicely. I can't wait to go back. The only drawback is that it's in a gas station and it is a bit off the beaten path. But dang it if it isn't so delicious!

Joshua W.

Yelp
This is one of our favorite places to eat in the Asheville area. Don't be put off by its hole in the wall appearance. The food is what really matters. My favorite is their fried chicken sandwich (Pictured) w/chips & ranch and a sweet tea. My wife loves their cheeseburger and chicken salad sandwich. I've had both as well and can tell you both of those are really good. The staff is friendly as well. I can't leave that out of my review! We'll obviously be back soon. And then again after that!

William D.

Yelp
The "restaurant" is a very unique spot inside of a gas station. Serving up anything from breakfast burritos to chicken sammies. I had the breakfast burrito because I had read other reviews of it being amazing and it definitely didn't let me down. This was a monster, appropriately priced and very flavorful. Pictures don't do it justice but I did my best.

Matthew S.

Yelp
Best cheeseburger and chicken sandwich period. Only potential gripe would be their limited hours, but then my wallet would have a problem.

Bonnie S.

Yelp
So after reviewing all the reviews my husband and I stopped to try this place. Normally we would not eat at a place that is located in a gas station, but we said let's try it because how bad can it be. Well we both said it is not worth stopping. It is just an average buffalo chicken sandwich. You can get a better one at chic filet, zaxby, Publix, and so on. The fresh chips they are calling fresh were just average. They were not hot fresh out of the fryer, they are pre fried. The wait is is just a tad too long but I will wait for good food. So if you're driving by, my suggestion is keep going. You can find better food elsewhere.

Angela Leigh T.

Yelp
Don't let its unassuming gas station exterior fool you. It's a good sign when you order an Arnold Palmer, and the lemonade comes out of a homemade glass jar. I grabbed the last available table in the intimate dining area, and asked the attendant behind the counter what she recommended. She said definitely the fried chicken sandwich. My husband returned to the table with a buffalo chicken fried sandwich, which was exceptional mistake! He got the Love Burger, which he instantly fell for. Their potato and pasta salad sides were also delicious. I use Yelp often to guide me to local hidden gems and this was definitely one of them.

Kate A.

Yelp
Woww talk about hidden gem!! This place is located in a gas station and is one of the better burgers in town! They have a drive thru too! They do breakfast and lunch which is great! They also have a little are to sit and eat inside if you like. The staff here were warm and friendly, super nice!

Erik F.

Yelp
Love love love Sand Hill Kitchen. Surprising good food in a gas station...check! Hot chicken sandwiches...check. Random homemade dessert by the checkout...check. Useful but sorta confusing drive up window...check. Lots of thing to love but I really want to write about just how good the spicy chicken sandwich is and to coo about the sides. This is flat out the best hot chicken sandwich in the area. What sets it apart is the clean preparation and quality local ingredients. As compared to some of the other popular local hot chicken sandwiches the masterpiece at Sand Hill is not caked in a thick batter. You taste juicy chicken and a surprising quality chicken at that. This is not low brow ironic hipster food. This is classy gas station we feed the locals what we would want to eat ourselves food. I almost always get the potato salad side which is also clean and just perfectly executed. The sandwich comes we these delicious pickles too I wish this place was open past 3pm and on weekends so I could get there more. Man. So good.

Meagan T.

Yelp
Great red beet pastrami! Definitely hit the spot. Great customer service and quality.

Mali C.

Yelp
This place is 100% worth a drive even with these gas prices. It's one of Ashevilles many surprisingly delicious gas station/restaurants. So the ambiance is very gas station. You can go in to order or drive thru. Even though it's not a dine in establishment It's easily one of my favorite breakfast spots in town. The grit cakes are omg mind blowing fluffy fried carbs. The biscuits are soft humongous melt in your mouth perfection. The service is quick and southernly kind.

Dustin B.

Yelp
Great quality breakfast, only complaint is there is no sides for breakfast as an option to go with the main dish, otherwise this would be five stars. The food was hot and fresh and the staff are friendly. I don't care if it's in a gas station, it's good food and well worth a stop. I will be coming back for lunch since I have a good idea that their fried chicken sandwich will be amazing!

Sarah A.

Yelp
Listen closely friends. In the south, some of the best food you will find is in a gas station. I kid you not. This place is an example of that. The location of the restaurant is on the side of a gas station and is a quick stop to grab a real good fried chicken sandwich. This sandwich should come with a gym membership because it's that good. They have other options but the chicken sandwich is notable. The service is not too long but there are typically only a few people on staff at a time and the food will come out fresh after ordering. The ambiance is very simple and the place is meant for takeaway more than it is for sitting down and eating at the store.

Jacob M.

Yelp
Best gas station food I've ever had! The crunch of the chicken was a perfect intermingling with the buffalo sauce, bonus points if you get the pimento cheese :)

Lan S.

Yelp
Many locals say the Sand Hill Kitchen is a hidden gem for good breakfasts and sandwiches. It's in the BP station at the corner of Sand Hill and Sardis in Enka-Candler. They especially recommend the breakfast biscuit and gravy, breakfast biscuit sandwiches, fried chicken sandwich, cheeseburger and Reuben. Most sandwiches are $10 to $12.

Catrina B.

Yelp
So long as you know you're walking into a gas station to order, be prepared to be pleasantly surprised by the quality of your breakfast sandwich! My husband had the scrambled egg and bacon on toast and I had mine on a biscuit. Both were amply proportioned and delicious. Perhaps the best value for a meal during our time in Asheville.

Edison M.

Yelp
Sand Hill Kitchen certainly lives-up to its reputation. I enjoyed both a breakfast and lunch over conductive days during a recent trip to Asheville. There is a reason their Fried Chicken sandwich earns awards. It was sublime. I need to come back and try the Love Burger. Value priced, but not lacking for quality. Highly recommended.

Kristen Claire G.

Yelp
Second lunch here, we tried something new too! Yay!!! It's not often that we stray from something if we love it. So the fact that we both went with something new, pretty darn proud of ourselves. This time I got the special - roast beef and Turkey with a horseradish Mayo, greens and pickled onions. I would have liked my onions to be more pickled but it probably would have been overwhelming. The roast beef wasn't what I'm used too, a little less rare and much thicker pieces but it fit in perfectly with the Turkey. The thing was massive. First thoughts were, how am I gonna get this in my mouth? Before I could answer my own question my sweet one was already finished. He got the "award winning" fried chicken sandwich and ate it so fast I'm not even sure if he tasted anything. So it must have been good. Twas also a pretty darn big Sammie. We both got chips. That seasoning is a real game changer. A little salty, a little sweet, a whole lotta yum. I still think the pickles are "disgustingly, delicious"... they are just a different kind of weird that I can't wrap my taste buds around but I really do enjoy them. Service was quick and friendly per usual. I really enjoy the drive up window, makes my Togo order fast and breezy. Next time I'm going for the roasted beet Sammie. Unless they have a daily special that calls out.

Alex N.

Yelp
Basic, good food. No fluff, just the core. A go to place for everyone who likes good food.

Jenna G.

Yelp
Probably one of the best chicken sandwiches I have ever had. Blake ordered a burger and we split them so we could experience them both. AMAZING! I opted for the zucchini salad and it was great. I love places like this, where the food speaks for itself. Will we go back? Absolutely! Friendly staff and again, the chicken sandwich was a 10!

Tamara A.

Yelp
Great fresh fast cooked food. The chicken sandwich was amazing Fried Chicken Sandwich

Sherri L.

Yelp
Once again Yelp friends did not disappoint! Had a potato, egg and cheese breakfast burrito. It was hot and delicious. Just needed a bit of salt but that was a quick fix. A nice break from the hotel free breakfast for a small price. I got there during what turned out to be a brief lull and soon all the little Formica cafe tables were full with waiting diners. Recommend this place

Suz F.

Yelp
Back again. Meatloaf sandwich special today! Omg pls don't Tell anyone because I am asking them all to come home with me to feed me till the end of my days. So satisfying.

Carlin M.

Yelp
What a great find - found on Reddit via locals and well worth the drive. Don't be alarmed by Sand Hill being located inside a gas station, the food is delicious. Grabbed breakfast here on a recent visit to Asheville and both happy with our choices. It was one of those menus where we wanted to try everything. Portions were very hearty and service was fairly quick. There were drive-thru/pick up options as well, but we snagged one of a couple tables right by counter.

Erica L.

Yelp
Popped in here before a hike. Was full of working locals; construction, painters, UPS drivers. A great sign that proved to be accurately read. We had the roasted beet sandwich: Fantastic veggie option. Grilled cheese for the kiddo, and fried chicken sandwich. All were outstanding. This is just a counter with a few tables in a gas station, but one of the best things I've eaten in a while.

Brittney R.

Yelp
I really enjoy coming to this spot! My burgers have consistently been good and the service is always so friendly! I have had the love cheeseburger each time I've gone (about 3 times now ) and it's always so delicious!

Thomas R.

Yelp
I was skeptical when I first heard of this place especially as a gas station restaurant but I have been proven wrong. I've never ordered the same thing twice and have never been disappointed! The breakfast burrito is so delicious and reminds me of the ones I used to get in Phoenix from one of the many "-berto" restaurants but better! The chicken sandwich is crispy and juicy. The Love Burger - my lunch today- was one of the best in the city. And I'm a HUGE fan of their homemade chips and pickles!

Jonathan M.

Yelp
A great chicken sandwich, but I prefer to be able to eat without hearing f-bombs coming from the kitchen, which is literally 10 feet away. I listened to some woman talking about she was "f-ing pissed" about something, and some "F-ing huge apartment". I'm certainly no prude, but I'm also one who was raised that that particular word is NOT part of everyday conversation.

Mark S.

Yelp
Don't let the location fool you, as it's located in the gas station. The food and service is perfect. Very delicious! This might be one of my new favorite breakfast & lunch spots. A true hidden gem. We had a pork belly BLT and fried chicken sandwich. With Homemade pickles and homemade chips. I ate food too fast so sorry, no photos. lol

Alex E.

Yelp
update tiiime! words aren't needed. just look at the best chicken sandwich in town!

Michelle V.

Yelp
My husband was spontaneous in dropping in for lunch here, and I was deliciously surprised. My only real complaint is that we arrived at 10:55 and they didn't start lunch until 11:00. So we had to wait 15 minutes for our food. I had their award-winning cheeseburger and he had their chicken sandwich. My burger was super greasy and messy, but also super delicious! Their homemade pickles were in between the cucumber and pickle stage, but had a deliciously rare flavor. I was not a fan of their macaroni salad, but my husband loved it. He says the chicken sandwich was simple, yet had the perfect combination of condiments to make it admirable. It was crispy and yummy. I would recommend this place!

Terese C.

Yelp
We've been going to Sand Hill since they opened! Food is consistently good. One of the best fried chicken sandwiches in town! I particularly love their lemon bars that they make on occasion.

David C.

Yelp
Chicken sandwich is insane.... Pork belly BLT was also insane... Blackberry cobbler? Yep you guess it, insane.. Can't stop eating at this place.

Constance A.

Yelp
OK now don't be shocked but this little restaurant is in a gas station. But please don't let that stop you the sandwiches are scrumptious that means really good LOL!!! My husband and I love to run everywhere and try all kinds of unique little places. This is one of them they were very friendly when ordering and they had delicious gluten-free bread which I try to eat as often as possible. I had an absolutely delicious turkey sandwich (Turkey was piled high) with their homemade potato chips yummy!!! My husband had one of the best Rubens I've ever eaten. The sauerkraut and creamy sauce that they had made for the sandwich were a definite 10!!! They usually have potato salad, pasta salad and their homemade chips but they often run out of the potato salad. The chips are crispy and season with something that made them absolutely delicious. Give this restaurant to try you won't be disappointed they also had a very large breakfast menu I'm going to post both of those so you can see what they have.

Cori D.

Yelp
Love me a convenience store diner! San Hill Kitchen is delicious. We had the rueben, fried chicken sandwich, and a cheeseburger. Everything was cool perfectly and super flavorful.

Thomas R.

Yelp
Great food and great people. Perfect when I'm in the mood for a treat. Fried chicken biscuit never disappoints

Carl S.

Yelp
Great food!!!! In a gas station !!! The burgers are wonderful... philly steak flavor is second to none. The house made chips are a must. Mac and Cheese is packed with cheese... should be called Cheese&Mac!!!! Banana Pudding tastes awesome.. I like a few more cookies. Great place to hang with friends and grab a bite. This place is a gem. Try it!

Beth M.

Yelp
This place is IT! The staff are the best. The burger, Fried green tomato BLT, breakfast burritos are huge and yummy.

Tina H.

Yelp
What a gem. I've been here twice now and have loved it. First time was breakfast. I had a breakfast scramble that had sausage, egg and a Cayenne sauce that was very good. The ingredients blended well together. Yesterday I had the Reuben sandwich accompanied by the collard greens. The Reuben was one of the best I've ever had. The bread soft in the middle, right amount of sauerkraut, and a thick slice of pastrami. Collard greens were not a gummy mess but were soft and had a great texture.

Yael D.

Yelp
So hubby and I, plus the kid by default decided to forgo the free breakfast at our hotel in favor of exploring local eats. With that said, we wanted to save most of our blow out meals for dinner. Thus I was happy to come across this place. Anyway, like Charme C. mentions, this spot is located inside a gas station. Not near it or attached to it, but inside it. Yeah, that's right. And I don't know about you, but when I think of gas station food, a phrase I use VERY loosely, my mind goes to the wrinkled-like-a-prune, sketchy looking hot dogs the high school kids snack on at my neighborhood fuel center. No worries of that here: This is food made with love. In fact, I had the chance to chat with the friendly chef/owner and from what I recall, she is a home cook who decided to grab the opportunity to open a restaurant in this location in an effort to provide affordable, thoughtfully prepared food to locals in need of such an option. As for our breakfast, I adored my Grit Cakes, something I'd never tried before. They are like a lighter, less dense version of Polenta Cakes, if you're familiar, but made with Grits of course. Hubby wasn't as enamored with his Breakfast Burrito, but I took a bite and it was definitely solid and fresh tasting, especially for the price. Kid, who's never encountered a Chicken Biscuit he didn't like, was happy with his pick. Interestingly, while conversing with the aforementioned chef/owner, she confided that she makes her Biscuits using only cream and no butter. So know that the Biscuits here are soft and tender, but different. Personally, I prefer the flavor and flakiness that butter adds. But that's me. The dining space for this little eatery is off to the side, away from the rest of the Gas Station. But don't go expecting much in terms of ambiance. There's some seating, and for us, at least, it was perfectly fine for a quick, uber casual breakfast. I kind of wish we'd had time to stop in again to try the Beet Sandwich that Hillary E. raves about. Maybe next time and I really hope there will be one.:)

Cinnamon K.

Yelp
We were like, how could a place that is located in a gas station have 68 five star reviews? Then we discovered -- it is fantastic. Next time I have people in town who want Southern, but in a great way, as opposed to a mass-produced-huddle-house way, I will take them all the way across town to this gas station. I got the Bowl of Goodness with grit cakes and sausage gravy and it almost killed me but, wow

Wade C.

Yelp
These guys are awesome! I stumbled across their restaurant while taking a short-cut (I thought it was going to be a short-cut). I needed gas and stopped at the BP station. Traffic was backed up on Sardis Rd. so I decided to get a bite to eat. Great hamburger for around $10 with homemade tater chips. Nice little detour and spontaneous venture that paid off. They have plenty of variety on their menu. Anxious to try their chicken sandwich. Will recommend you should try at least once.

Christi F.

Yelp
This was surprisingly super yummy! We got breakfast there and both got the bowl of freshness. I couldn't finish it because there was so much but it was soo good! They make there sausage homemade & the sauce they put on top was really good too. The only reason why I'm not giving it 5 stars is because it is in a gas station. If it was in its own stand alone place it would be the spot! The menu is limited but the choices are solid. Don't underestimate a place that is in a gas station! It might surprise you!

Nancy B.

Yelp
I love, love, love Sandhill Kitchen! Wonderful owners, great food and one of my top 3 casual food stops in my general neighborhood. Food is fresh and locally sourced. It's located in a gas station so you can easily miss it but don't let that deter you. It is currently only open as a drive through take out but they have managed to stay open during this pandemic and I am eternally grateful! My heart would break if they went away. I should add that I am terribly picky about my food and yet I don't like to cook and clean . Thank you Jamie for keeping this gem open no matter what! Nancy

Alex R.

Yelp
Just go..once you do, you will become a regular. Breakfast burrito highly recommend. Daily specials..that are truly chefs kiss! Meatloaf sandwich is to die for. The staff are the absolute best! If you're lucky you may even get a little drawing on your to-go box.

William L.

Yelp
I would give this more than 5 stars if I could. I was questioning whether or not to eat here, as I typically don't eat at restaurants attached to gas stations. BOY AM I GLAD I DID!! The food was amazing and the portions were very sizable! This is obviously a hidden gem....go check it out!

Zach K.

Yelp
Worthless place that will hang up on you because you paused when ordering. Then when you call back and express that it's rude, they hang up again. Save your time. Obviously the little girls in here can handle taking orders.

PT H.

Yelp
We were in Asheville for a long weekend and searched Yelp for a place for Saturday brunch. Thankfully we tried Sand Hill Kitchen. This was hands down the best meal we had while in town. We ordered the BLT + egg, fried chicken + egg, and eggs + sausage + potatoes. We spent the meal both offering each a bite of what we ordered and yet hoping they wouldn't want a second. So fresh. So yummy. So off the beaten path, we're lucky we didn't miss it. Do yourself a favor and stop by. We will definitely be back.

Bly A.

Yelp
We have been to SHK many, many times. Great food across the board. However, the bulk of their lunch menu is sandwiches now running $10-13 each with a tiny side. Overpriced for essentially a drive-thru experience at a gas station. Could be more palatable if the large sandwich portions were smaller and more suited to a lighter mid-day meal rather than a heavy dinner. Hand-made desserts are delicious, but also overpriced. Amazing food, but we've been going to SHK less frequently due to the poor value.

Sara Renee V.

Yelp
I love SHK for breakfast and lunch! Everything on the menu is excellent, and they have great daily specials. The Love Cheeseburger is one of the best in town. For breakfast, the chicken biscuit can't be beat! Occasionally the special is French toast with chicken tenders and blueberries. That's my absolute favorite, and I wish it was on the menu daily! So excited they are now offering dinner a few days a week, and I look forward to what they will be offering! As others have said, don't let the gas station location discourage you from eating here, it's truly some of the best food in town. It's nice to not have to go downtown or into West Asheville for a tasty meal. On busy days we usually order ahead and get it to go because seating is limited.
