15 Excellent Margaritas to Try in San Diego | Eater

"Sun, sand, and stunning ocean vistas — Sandbar embraces all the reasons to love San Diego. There’s no question why Sandbar’s TKO-style fish tacos win every fish taco challenge in San Diego, starting with a piece of grilled local fish on a cotija-crusted flour tortilla. Top that with chipotle aioli, beer-brined escabeche slaw, lime crema, spicy guacamole, tobacco onions, and fried cilantro and you’ve got yourself one of the best fish tacos in town. The only reasonable accompaniment to a classic fish taco is a classic margarita, made with Astral Blanco, lime, and agave." - Mary Beth Abate

San Diego’s Best Sports Bars and Restaurants | Eater San Diego

"A popular beachside spot for game days, this sports bar has previously hosted an eating competition called the Glutton Bowl during Super Bowl halftime. Outside of the biggest game of the year, it’s a Mission locals’ standby for its burgers, tacos, and other pub fare like buttery pretzel bites, chimichurri egg rolls, carne asada tots, and soyrizo queso." - Eater Staff

Google
Stopped by Sandbar and had a great experience. The service was solid and the food hit the spot. We started with chips, guac, and salsa—fresh, crunchy, and flavorful. The tacos were the highlight, especially the Surf n Turf taco. That one stood out the most—packed with flavor and perfectly balanced. Overall, it’s a fun spot with good food, good service, and a relaxed vibe. Definitely worth checking out if you’re craving tacos and a cold drink.

Google
Best deal on Mission beach is Taco Tuesday at the Sandbar, great tasting tacos at a discount on Tuesday’s. Lots of screens for viewing, open concept seating, indoor/ outdoor and an upstairs area. Had a drink and food and tipped well, my wife and I still got out of there for under $40, fantastic deal!

I’ve been going to this places an embarrassing amount since discovering it about 3 months ago. The TKO and Beach style tacos are my FAVORITE! You have a choice of portions, I usually get the pork or carne asada. Monthly they have a new drink. This month’s drink is basically a Lychee Margarita. Happy Hour is Monday through Friday, 3pm to 6pm. The happy hour menu is okay but I usually don’t order from it. The tacos come with a small portion of chips and salsa, so no need to order any if you are getting tacos. The wings are great!! There is an upstairs patio area that’s great during the day. They have restrooms on both floors. The entrance and downstairs restrooms are easy to access and seem wheelchair accessible.

Google
The seafood tacos were made with fresh ingredients- overall quite delicious! Prices were a bit on the higher end but as expected for a place next to the beach. Service was friendly however the music was extremely loud and it was difficult to hear my group. Luckily they adjusted the volume after I made a complaint. Everyone in my group liked their dishes (I.e., covered tater tots, meat tacos).

Google
Came here with the kids. The staff was attentive and were quick to seat us and bring our food. I had the mussels which were amazing. We also tried the corn dogs and the Birria tacos. Everything came out accurate and delicious. We will definitely be eating here again when we come to San Diego. The restaurant was clean and so we're the bathrooms.

Google
This is a wonderful place to have breakfast with a beautiful view of the beach! The food is so good and recommend the hevos rancheros it was delicious!!!

Google
Great little beachside restaurant in Belmont Park. This place came highly recommended by a family member. The food was excellent with very generous portions. We had three hungry teens with us, so that was appreciated! The view was lovely (ask to sit upstairs) and the vibe is very laid back. Couples, families, littles... everyone seemed to be comfortable and welcome. It's definitely a family restaurant. People were dressed casually from a day at the beach. Would definitely recommend!

Google
Amazing tacos. I did the taco plate with the famous TKO style grilled fish taco and the Quesa Birria taco. So good! I may have even preferred the Quesa Birria, but both were amazing. Great service and great beer.

Bev F.

Yelp
Breakfast and coffee so spot on we decided to stay for the college football games! Great vibe for sports games! Our server, Itto, was fantastic despite the fact that she was running solo for most of the day. Had a smile on her face at all times and was cognizant of the time we waited for anything. Chips and salsa were awesome and the Juan Street Taco was fabulous!!

Yelp
We went there for taco Tuesday. The tacos were terrific. Also had some wings. They were also very good. Service was friendly and very good. There is both bar seats and tables. There is also a rooftop seating area and plenty of TVs to watch the games if your choice!!

Yelp
Located right across from the Belmont Park Parking Lot in Mission Beach, this place has a great upper deck with ocean views that make it worth a visit at least once. It's definitely a nice spot to have a bite, grab a drink and enjoy the scenery. That said, beyond the view, it's pretty much your standard beach sports bar. The service is hit or miss, as with any sports bar but I do feel the staff here really does think a little too highly of themselves when it comes to seating and deciding where to put people. They have come off as snobby or maybe just too young and naive to realize the impact they can have on the whole experience with their attitude the couple of times I've been there. Nothing particularly unique about the food or atmosphere. The tacos were good, just not memorable enough to draw me back specifically for them. If you're already in Mission Beach and want a casual place to hang out with a view, it's a decent pick, but not a must-visit. $25 for the Two Taco Plate with the grilled Mahi Mahi and fried Mahi Mahi plus an added quesabirria taco. Pretty good deal and definitely finished the plate.

Yelp
Always reliably good. Great view of the ocean. Reasonable kids menu. Fruit bowl a real plus. Prompt service.

Yelp
We stopped in while our teenagers went on some rides at the park next door, and it turned out to be the perfect spot to relax. The hostess was accommodating, she had a space at the bar cleared for us within just a few minutes. We kicked things off with their melon and strawberry margaritas, both refreshing and delicious. For food, we shared the wings and carne asada tots, both hit the spot and were great for snacking with drinks. Prices were reasonable, the bartenders were attentive and friendly, and the overall vibe made it a great little hangout by the beach.

Yelp
First thing we want in San Diego is some seafood tacos and an ice cold beer. This place delivered! My tacos were delicious and had the perfect level of spice and flavor. They have an outdoor area that is dog friendly, and a good kids menu, too. Our server was very kind and professional. Highly recommend!

Yelp
The views, vibe, and employees are probably why this place is rated as high. Those three things combined really made it an enjoyable spot on our bar crawl adventure to celebrate a birthday. There is an upstairs seating area which is outside. That has a pretty vibe and when it's clear out or during the day. Has a nice view of the area. There is an indoor section on the ground level. Menu is pretty straightforward. A handful of burger options. A handful of bowls. A lot of appetizers. Some beer. Some wine. And a full bar of liquor. We came in a group of 10. The wait staff was quick, efficient and wonderful. Really helped us celebrate. Food was simply okay. None of us were impressed but it did the job. It was bar food. So don't get your hopes up too much. I had the Diablo burger which had pepper jack cheese, spicy guacamole, crispy onion strings, jalapeños, and chipotle aioli on a burger. And then I had the wings with the spicy garlic ranch. I think the wings were good. I wasn't a fan of the sauce. Wasn't spicy. Next time I'll get the honey hot. Others ordered the ancho chicken sandwich which was flavorful according to them. The honey hot chicken sandwich seemed to be the winner. Good idea to come here to start off the night. Especially when there are sporting events on. Tons of TVs for you to enjoy. Parking is street if you can find any or across the street in Belmont park.

Yelp
In a nice spot, right by the beach and the space is nice. My boyfriend and I got fish tacos and fish/chips, it was... okay. The fish was dry and there wasn't much going on flavor wise so I was a bit disappointed considering their fish tacos are "award winning." The service was good, nice enough but it also was just me and a few others in there so I'm unsure what it would be like if it's busy.

Yelp
Nice little spot for food and drinks. I ordered the two taco plate of birria and it was good. My little girl got quesadillas. It was a chill place with chill music playing on the sp

Yelp
Sandbar sports bar & grill will definitely be one I return to whenever I am in San Diego! Let's start with the bar having a decent Lions fans base! Love that and they had the game on multiple TVs! For the space to be on the smaller side the amount of tv's in the establishment is amazing! I didn't sit upstairs with the ocean views but went up and was impressed with the layout and all they had to offer. On Sundays they do bottomless mimosas from 1-4 for $28 definitely worth it the champagne is good and light and doesn't leave you feeling bloated after. The other drinks they serve are also nice and well balanced. The service is typical for a sports bar on a Sunday it was very busy so didn't expect anything better than what we had but shout out to our server because he was great and looked out! The food! While this bar had lions fans I'd definitely come back for the food! Everything was hot and you can tell they care about what they put out there. The wings were well sauced and crispy just like I like them every bite was juicy and flavorful. The wings I had were the hot honey wings and the spice and the honey were so perfectly balanced. I do wish they had a bit more of a kick but it didn't make me like them any less. The fries are good and have a nice bite to them. With the bottomless mimosas you get an option of chicken tenders, chimi rolls or nachos. We decided to do the Chimi rolls and they were good! The only thing is I also wish those had a bit more spice similar to the wings. The location is great located right next to mission beach so also go to watch a beautiful sunset. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Cinco de Mayo in San Diego, and we wanted to see the beach, and have some tacos and margaritas. Headed to a spot nearby that has apparently rebranded and no longer has any tacos so we went hunting for something nearby and found Sandbar. We were super hungry so we got the soyrizo queso to start. Absolutely fantastic! Not one to eat queso and ate a lot of it! Split an assortment of tacos - all which were fantastic. A favorite was the Juan Street taco. One of the members of our group tried a grilled mahi taco and ate the whole thing super quickly, stating it was absolutely delicious. We should have ordered more fish tacos because apparently they have some of the best! So that's my tip - everything was great but get the fish tacos! Not sure if we will be able to make it back before we leave but we'd sure like to! Service was also super fast and super friendly!!

Yelp
A nice restaurant right by Mission Beach. My husband and I got the honey hot chicken sandwich. I wish it was a crispy chicken sandwich but besides that it tasted good. There are only Pepsi products for the Coca Cola lovers. We had a good experience.

Grace S.

Yelp
My family went here on our stop threw San Diego. I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!! My husband ordered fish and chips and the fish were so tough. He couldn't even bite through them. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and they brought out a totally different burger. I ate it because I didn't wanna complain or waste food. We both ended up with our stomach's hurting on our 7 Hour drive home. It was just absolutely awful. They really shouldn't be claiming they have the best fish and chips. 100$ for stomach aches and constant bathroom breaks home !

Yelp
What a great start to our day. Great family stop on our way to the beach, with convenient public parking, at Belmont park and the beach just a few minutes walk down the way. We were greeted warmly, seated and served as a party of 7 including my 3 grandkids. Every one of us was thrilled with our food and service. My granddaughter ordered French toast sticks, picky about pure maple syrup, and good French toast and was thrilled, as well as those of us who got a taste. They're using the best pure ingredients and the chef is a pro. Lots of smiles and sweetness from the host to the servers. I'm so glad I chose the vegetarian Soyrito Chorizo Soyrito Queso burrito. Not only was it gorgeous, but huge and delicious. I loved the Soyrizo Queso, so creamy and cheesy. Also the Soyrizo chorizo was flavorful, with crispy tasty tater tots, farm fresh eggs and wrapped in a fresh whole wheat tortilla. I say "farm fresh eggs", because we have chickens and we can smell and taste the difference. All 7 of us, including kids, were very happy with our meals and will look forward to going back!

Yelp
I think this place is good. It's a nice location close to mission beach. The upstairs is really cool with a view of the ocean. I liked the taco I ordered (fried avocado) and the fries were crispy and salty. I thought the taco was a good size so it was worth the price. It had too much sour cream so I would order it without next time. I felt like the service was the downside. I asked for a straw which he forgot. He gave my friend the incorrect margarita. Unfortunately the server did not come check on us for us to let him know of the error. I would have understood if it was busier but it was not. I might come again, just would hope it's a different server!

Yelp
The atmosphere and the views are great. Food was good and the waitress was nice as well! I'll definitely be coming back when I'm in town!

Yelp
Went to Sandbar with a group of friends. Requested to view the upper deck since myself and a few others have been there multiple times. Host and waitress were very unprofessional. Including making comments directly to the customers (never seen that before). Other than that great location for beach drinks and food.
google avatar

Lisa Y.

Yelp
We biked around Mission Bay and the boardwalk between Mission Beach and Pacific Beach. Once we finished, I was ravenous. We dropped our bikes at the rental place and walked back to Mission Beach and found the Sandbar! They have a patio set up on the street, where parking would normally be, and it is surrounded by a wooden wall. There is a patio attached to the restaurant. and there is a rooftop patio but that was too full by the time we got there. Ordered a marg right off the bat. then for lunch, we had a bacon cheeseburger and tacos. Everything was delicious. Our server was nice, and attentive. Loved sitting outdoors although I would have preferred rooftop as the motorcycles and vehicles were a bit loud. Overall, a great place to eat lunch, close to the beach!

Yelp
Amazing food and drinks. Excellent ambiance on the sky deck. Must try the award winning TKO fish tacos. The chimi rolls are the best apps in town. The drink of the month made for a perfect summer cocktail.

Yelp
So we were set to go to an Escape room, but missed our scheduled time due to parking and traffic. We rescheduled, so we had some time to kill. We grabbed a spot on the sidewalk patio and ordered some drinks. I got a beer, but my gf got the Aqua Fresca which she thoroughly enjoyed. For food we all grabbed some tacos. I was curious and tried the fried avocado and the birria taco. The birria was amazing and with the sauces it was my favorite. The avocado was not bad, but lacked the same standout flavors. The chips, guacamole, and refried beans were a nice touch as well. All in all pretty good spot. Plenty of ppl watching which I enjoyed, but the service was off. We had to two drinks that weren't brought out. One had to be reordered and mine had to be taken off the bill. It happens, so still a good time.

Yelp
First timer at the Sandbar. We sat outside and had a great view of the ocean. I was expecting to eat a burger but we ended up sharing a bunch of appetizers. We had the carne asada nachos, southwest egg rolls, buffalo wings and fries. The server recommended the carne asada over chicken nachos and she was not wrong! The nachos also come with beans but we got them on the side. These were soooo delicious!! Also we were hesitant about the egg rolls since we thought they would taste like the Chilis restaurant ones but these were waaayyyy better. They were stuffed with chicken, cheese, black beans and spices. And the dough was so fresh and soft. It was served with a side sauce which tasted like it was made with mayo but went well with the egg rolls. Finally, the wings were perfectly made and of course the beers were a nice addition to our lunch. Service was great too! Our server was friendly and attentive. I would visit again to try their tacos as those looked yummy.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing fish tacos and ocean views - what else do you need? Their guac is great, both the mahi mahi and shrimp tacos were delish.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Yum, yum! To be fair, I'm a guy from the NE and have never had a fish taco but I will say these tacos were delicious. I usually have low expectations whenever I visit a place on any beach establishment however this place didn't disappoint. Check it out for yourself.
google avatar

Natalie R.

Yelp
I absolutely love coming here. I'm always comfortable, food is great and service is great. Meg and Zebbie are awesome. Very attentive and friendly. No bad days when they are working.
google avatar

Joe S.

Yelp
Came out to watch the games and have a bite with some friends. Sat up on the roof deck and our server Eto was amazing. We were trying to figure out what we wanted and she suggested a smorgasbord of the top 5 apps so we got them all. Drink refills were on it and the vibe was great. Will definitely be back
google avatar

Elvira G.

Yelp
Quick seating. Fair prices. Daughter enjoyed the ceviche. Taco plates: beans ok, chips a bit stale, tacos ok. Hubs said burger ok. I had mahi mahi fish and chips. Greasy and dry fish. French fries coated and just ok. Nice waitress and quick service. Convenient location across from Belmont Park. Claim voted best fish taco but hard to believe given my fried fish dish. Sorry, can't recommend.
google avatar

Maryann K.

Yelp
Happened to be back in San Diego and couldn't miss a chance to try this place again. It's as good as I remember and I went twice in the 4 days I was in mission beach. Note that they serve wine in 12 Oz cans. I'm not a fan of canned wine but what they serve is quite good. The taco plate with chips, guac and beans is a good value for 17.50 at the current price. Tacos are so flavorful and tasty. If you can get a seat on the upstairs patio, do it. The views are great. We had Gabriel as our server both times and he was super friendly and on top of it. I hope to visit again!

Marjon F.

Yelp
Was craving fish tacos, so I finally decided to try this place! It's right around the corner from where I live, but for those that are not waking distance, there's a large parking lot right across the way! They have some "infamous" taco styles that you can get with any meat or seafood option. I decided to order their Juan taco, which is with pork and their KTO taco with fried fish. Best of both worlds: surf and turf! And wow, jam-packed with flavor! Beware there, basic red sauce is actually pretty spicy, and honestly, you don't even need it. They added all the right compliments to each taco. Honestly, I really loved there tacos, I'm excited I found this place so close to my place, I may turn into a regular customer! In addition to their yummy tacos, they have nice outdoor sitting to enjoy the beach breeze. They also have a ton of umbrella covers, so don't worry about too much heat! Two-story is open on weekends only.

Madhavi C.

Yelp
Best house margarita and street style tacos. The servers are amazing and very friendly.
google avatar

Lauren G.

Yelp
The fries were soooo good my boyfriend wanted to come back the next day. The drinks on the other hand were not. They had no flavor and tasted watered down.
google avatar

Bill T.

Yelp
80+ db is too loud for anyone. Fish&Chips; fish cut too small and overcooked to terrible dryness that resembled chicken AND No Coleslaw to offset the grease overload! Fry's Okay. Speaking of Chicken, the chicken with Cob Salad was extremely dry. Can't imagine why we'd ever return. I suggest some/anywhere else.

Zoey K.

Yelp
Meg was AMAZING! She matched our energy and was on top of our needs all night! Would definitely come back and recommend to our friends!
google avatar

Rhett G.

Yelp
Came here on our first Friday night in mission beach. It was busy and just before the 4th of July but we got a table shortly for our party of 7. Service was fantastic and quick. Food was very good. Especially the wings.

Abdualltif A.

Yelp
Im been there a lot of times , and of course they know me, it was my favourite place every time invite my friends over there, but unfortunately they are disrespectful with us , and the lady she was really disrespectful even I brought new friend it was the first day for him in SD , I think it's gonna be the last day for me over there.
google avatar

Sasha N.

Yelp
Great location right on the beach with plenty of room on the deck upstairs, downstairs (indoors) and outside. We went here a few times during our time in SD, including on Thanksgiving Day - they served a thanksgiving plate which was actually not bad. They also have a great Diablo burger. Drinks are good too, and reasonable prices. Service can vary based on the day you go and who takes care of you (based on the few times we went).
google avatar

Sky T.

Yelp
Good place right on the beach in San Diego. Walking distance from the Bahia Resort area too. Casual American eats and nice service. Food came out pretty quick and hit the spot. Decent prices too and overall a good place to hit up if you're in the area.
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
Fantastic location for tasty eats and drinks by the beach. I frequent this place on the weekends after volleyball. Their breakfast/brunch menu, along with their beer and cocktails are just what I need for that post workout fill. My typical go-to is the San Diego Scramble since it's probably the most healthy. The abundance of bacon and avocado with heapings of egg is just what the body needs. However, the Breakfast Quesadilla or the Spicy California Burrito is just what the body (err...tastebuds) want. The cheesy goodness and subtle texture of the tots make both items so very enjoyable. There's no shortage flavor with every bite. There's lots of options for seating: outside along the sidewalk, outside but within the restaurant/bar inside seating or bar seating, or the 2nd floor with indoor/outdoor style seats. The staff are all very helpful. I usually go on the upstairs section and the bartender/waitress is very attentive and friendly.

Julie N.

Yelp
Great food and drinks for breakfast. Great service! Loved the breakfast sandwich. Also the breakfast tacos with chips and dip.

Carrie W.

Yelp
Amazing food and great vibe! Bartender on Sunday was friendly and amazing service! Shout out to the guy that was helping her as well! We will be back!

Yelp
The Only Review You Need To Read We visited this place after spending a little time at Belmont Park across the street. There was a sign out front announcing this place had been named as having the best fish tacos in San Diego by several different organizations. With that sort of declaration, we felt compelled to investigate for ourselves. The servers were very friendly and attentive and we were served quickly. And just like it was claimed, the fish tacos were indeed pretty damn good. Evidently this place is a sports bar and is probably more happening at night, on the weekends or when there's a notable sporting event going on. We visited on Monday afternoon so it was rather mellow, which was fine. And it has an upstairs seating area which we didn't notice, but may not have been open because either we didn't ask, it was slow, and/or it was slightly drizzling on the day we went. If I had to make any minor quibble, it would be that flies were a bit of a pain if you opt for the outside seating like we did, but that probably would apply to anywhere. Bottom line - I enjoyed my meal, the service and the atmosphere. And there were other items on their menu that I'd like to try, so I would definitely dine here again.
google avatar

Tim L.

Yelp
Attention campers, lunch has been cancelled due to lack of hustle, deal with it! Whether it's the service, or the quality, or the lack of vibe as a whole, this place is just a miss. Bad prices, lackluster flavors, and a good reason to go somewhere else. Sandbar? Na, Sandbetter go somewhere else

Megan P.

Yelp
Ohhh my gosh. So good. If I could just eat all of this every day I would. Best food so far on our San Diego trip. Amazing service too! Fish taco and fish and chips

Drew M.

Yelp
Food was good. Place is a little old and dirty. All the male staff were so nice and accommodating but we have a female server upstairs and she was so rude. She hardly checked in on us. We had to flag someone down for our bill well after our food had been boxed. Our waitress did less than the other men that wasn't even our waiter. You could just tell she was there for a paycheck. Even the table next to us asked for a different waiter.

Yelp
Taco Tuesday is lit. A taco for either $3, $4, or $5. The bathroom is single stall, but it's clean. Service was quick and good! Would come again for taco Tuesday. Didn't get to try the drinks.

Yelp
Outside seating, the tacos were amazing. The guacamole was fresh. Great and friendly staff.

Yelp
Landed in San Diego and went straight to Mission Beach where our Airbnb was located. Found this place walking by and thought why not! We visited this restaurant on three different occasions. Their happy hour is great! Ordered the street taco with carne asada and fried mahi mahi! They were basic but packed a lot of flavor! We were a group of five and everyone ordered something different. Get the pitcher of margaritas, it's a great deal at $48. My partner and I shared it and it was way cheaper than ordering separate drinks. It looks like a sports bar inside and there is a rooftop patio that you can enjoy a drink on while watching the waves! We had the same server twice and he was awesome. Remembered us from earlier. The bartender at the roof top was super laid back and definitely made a strong drink! Thanks for all the great service!

Yelp
Do not sleep on the mussels here! I would never have expected to get mussels at a taco & burger place, but - when I asked our waitress how they were, her facial expression said it all. I got them without her needing to say a word. These mussels are the best I've had, the tomato cream sauce they came in was so delicious and flavorful, and the cheese crusted bread that accompanied the mussels was mouthwatering. 10/10 recommend! While the photo doesn't quite show the excellence that the mussels were as my cousin was capturing her diablo burger (also delicious according to her), this was the only photo of the mussels. I truly hope you'll try them!

Yelp
Great food. Reasonably priced. Staff were friendly. Fun little place, close to the beach.
