S&J's is the latest to capitalize on the popular Nashville hot chicken craze that's hit DFW. Unlike their competitors that close 7-8 pm on the weekends, they have a niche of staying open late.
As far as the food itself goes, it's pretty solid. The hot original sandwich I ordered hit just right, especially with the ranch and orange dipping sauces. The mac and cheese was nice and creamy, and the banana pudding was devoured in seconds. The fries flight wasn't my favorite (1 of the flavors was way too salty), but it was worth trying once.
Unfortunately, they clearly have some kinks to work out. When I ordered I was given a wait time of 10-15 minutes, but it took about 25 minutes of waiting in the uncomfortably packed restaurant for my food to be ready. I did try to call them 3 separate times to order ahead of time, but no one ever picked up.
When I did receive my order, they messed up the sandwich. I asked for it in Texas Toast but was given the bun instead. They also completely forgot an order of the Fries Flight, so I had to wait even longer for them to remake it.
Now, regarding the whole COVID situation: I honestly did not feel comfortable here. A large part of the client base was not wearing masks at all. The space was so crowded that social distancing was impossible.
Most of the staff had masks, but the dude behind the counter who was the owner/manager did not. The cashier did have a mask, but for some reason she kept taking it off every single time someone ordered. Most dangerously, I also noticed at least one chef in the kitchen had no mask.
Overall, I would give them another try in the future. But not while the pandemic is still very much a threat: sorry, but I don't feel comfortable coming back anytime soon.
