Yelp
In a nutshell: One of those West Village restaurants whose façades draw your eyes in, glancing into an Italian austere sense of style and refined looking patrons is worth your time to stop by but, not all is perfect.
GOOD
This is my second time here but did not felt the need to document my first visit since at the time I wasn't concerned with writing reviews every single time I ate. I had soup and salad outside on a winter night, I remember enjoying the purity of the flavors and the wine only enhanced it. Although the weather did not allow me to enjoy diner at a pace I would had preferred, I made a mental note to return and see how the ambiance is inside.
Recently, I had important meeting via Zoom and decided Sant Ambroeus would offer a great background for it. Usually high end restaurants are slow early in the morning and for a party of one didn't though of making a reservation... I would had not gotten in, had not the Maitre'd recognized me from eating there before and kindly found me a table which left me with very little time to set up the laptop and lights. Understanding I was going to hold the table for awhile (for the duration of the interview) I ordered tea and sparkling water and let the waiter know not to disturb me while on the call and that I will order food right after. With a friendly smile the waiter accommodated my request and after serving the Early Grey she did not disturb me until I was done which I appreciated it.
BAD
You're paying for the location, for the austere decor and to be surrounded by elegant people, once you understand that you can make peace with a rather boring and pedestrian breakfast you could had easily prepare yourself at home. What keeps me from taking the review from 4 to 3 stars is that, there are elements of this restaurant that works beautifully but only on certain conditions. In other words, is like going to see a popular play and you happen to watch a matinee performance and then you go a closing night performance, although basically the same show one tends to be better than the other.
I've come to make peace with the fact that my preference for experiencing dining at certain restaurants comes with the caveat that they typically have very limited vegan or vegetarian options. For breakfast, if you don't want to eat eggs in any shape or form you're left with a handful of options that don't involve eating sugar-loaded baked goods, and when I ordered the crostini mozarella, tomato and arugula I didn't imagine it was just ordinary sandwich consisting of a cold and soft bun with slices of mozarella, tomato and basil without any seasoning, sauce or condiment to go with that dry salad was really underwhelming. The fancy Italian name for the ordinary fruits bowl, is nothing that you would say "Wow, only at a restaurant I can have this...", it looks like they literally pour the mix fruits bag directly into the bowl and that's it. Somehow I think that even if I would had ordered any of the egg based dishes, the seasoning was going to be lacking regardless.
GREAT
For an entrepreneur or business person this restaurant is perfect for conducting businesses, not so much for working long hours except a zoom call or short conferences of that sort. Either for lunch or diner, is preferable to make reservations in order to ensure expedite seating in a high-demand West Village venue. All in all, this is a place to see and be seen, from what I've tried in my opinion the dessert menu is their strength (try the Gianduia) and so their wine and spirits assortments.
