Where To Eat A Maritozzo In Rome - Rome - The Infatuation

"The maritozzo at Sant’ Eustachio is different (and smaller) than the others you find around town. These aren’t made using brioche dough. Rather, the pastry component is similarly to a crusty loaf, still filled with freshly whipped cream. They’re still very easily devourable, though. Having one at the bar with a macchiato and a tiny cup of sparkling water is a top-tier Italian breakfast experience." - carlo mantuano, annie replogle

How To Eat, Drink, & See (A Lot Of) Rome In A Day - Rome - The Infatuation

"No one’s going to stop you from ordering a takeaway cappuccino at Sant' Eustachio Il Caffè, a spot that's been around since 1938 and, conveniently for you, located in between the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. But you’re in Rome, and you should do as the Romans do: drink your espresso at the bar, pastry optional. Take a minute to mentally prepare for the rest of your very busy day, which—heads up—is going to include a lot of walking. From here, make your way to the Villa Borghese Gallery & Museum, which you should have hopefully bought tickets for in advance. Sant' Eustachio Il Caffè is only a 20-minute walk from the entrance on Villa Gabriele D'Annunzio, and the gallery itself is another 10 from there. Give yourself plenty of time to wander through the gardens and fantasize about moving to the Italian countryside, adding a few more vowels to your name, and opening your own olive oil farm before your designated time slot." - tiffany yannetta

Sant' Eustachio Il Caffè - Review - Centro Storico - Rome - The Infatuation

"The line at the Sant' Eustachio Il Caffè is almost as long as the one at the Pantheon, but unlike the Pantheon on a summer afternoon, it moves fast. Stand at the bar for a quick espresso, or grab a table outside and linger for a bit with a monachella, a fancy drink that has layers of sweetened espresso, hot chocolate, and whipped cream. That seat is going to cost a little extra, but it comes with a view of a building painted with 16th-century Medici family fresco, a Borromini spire that looks like a swirl of soft serve, and politicians in expensive suits on a break from the nearby Senate. If you’re looking for wifi and a big salad for lunch, the same team has Emporio Sant’Eustachio, Rome’s more stylish answer to Starbucks, around the corner." - Gillian McGuire

For tourists, remember you need to order at the counter then collect from the other if you're seated outside. They don't come to you. We ordered one Gran Cafe and one Monachella al banco (standing) and they were both delicious, exceptionally good coffee is served here and it looks like there is a rich history of coffee at this shop. The order was less that €3.50 per coffee and when we gave the receipt to the those making the coffee it arrived very quickly. Would highly recommend but as a tourist please familiarise yourself with what to do; 1) Order from the counter on the right 2) Procide receipt to individuals preparing coffee on the left 3) Bring to your own table if seated It's quite simple once you are aware, I have seen bad reviews because people didn't come knowing how to order or what to do. Please read how to have your coffee rather than being frustrated about having expectations it'll be the same to order as your home country.

Google
The greatest disappointment of the area!!This Is not longer Italian Coffe, as Italian and I also worked at coffe machine in bars, I says that sturbacks is much better. The caffuccino forth is like the bubbles of the shampoo, is not compacted and not gradually melted with the milk as It should be, the coffe nothing speciale, I asked a short coffe(espresso) but the staff not understood becosuse they are not Italian, made me a long coffe instead, the service Is crab, when I smtikd them that the coffe and cappuccino fornthe price we spent were not properly made, they didn't care. The Sugar Is the econimic chimical white industrial Sugar served in tables in plastica cans like ketchup and maionese at the econimic fast-food, whike all other italian bar Will server you at keast 3 differnt sugar. The tables were not stable and not cofortable. As Italian Expert of coffe I suggest you to tgo to the others coffe bar near pantheon. The cappuccino 6,5 euros

Google
First day in Rome. We were looking to explore the coffee houses of Rome. This place is very close to Piazza Navona, where we were staying. You can order directly at the counter and drink your coffee there. Or you can sit at the table and somebody will come to take your order. We decided to sit down. We ordered cappuccino, croissants (regular, chocolate, and pistachio). Everything was delicious.

Google
One of the best coffees I’ve had in Italy so far. The staff is extremely friendly. It has an old-school vibe and they roast the coffee. Very much a local spot that’s how we learned about it. You will not regret coming here for a coffee.

Google
Had a wonderful breakfast on a Saturday summer morning while visiting Rome, at this cafe as recommended by our local guide. It is located in a neat side street with outdoor seating. There was a little bit of a wait but the food service was fast. We had assorted croissants and pastries along with capuchins, latte, and chocolate. Enjoyable little meal.

Google
Located between the vibrant Piazza Navona and the majestic Pantheon, this charming coffee shop offers a perfect spot to relax amidst Rome's historic splendor. The coffee was truly exceptional. We savored a delightful cappuccino and a robust double espresso, each brewed to perfection.☕️✨☕️✨

Google
Small place, usually crowded, and staff can be a bit rushed during peak hours. But the coffee is great and the pastries are delicious. My favorite is the croissant with white chocolate filling — I normally don’t eat sweets, but this one is a perfect start to the day.

Google
Compared to another famous coffee shop (Gold Medal Coffee), I think its prices are a bit expensive. In addition to coffee, you can also order other drinks such as iced lemon tea. If you just want to take a break and don’t want to drink coffee, this is also a good choice.

Yelp
It was 7:20pm and we happen to walk past by this coffee shop. I had it on our itinerary, so we decided another cup of caffeine wouldn't hurt...gotta try them all! The coffee shop was full of store goodies, from coffee beans, branded accessories, sweets, and pastries. We opted to have our coffee at the bar and got the Gran Caffe', their specialty espresso. I really enjoyed how creamy it was, it made the espresso very tasty and gave a great lasting impression. I kind of regret not getting some souvenirs, so I will definitely have to come back next time!

Yelp
Absolutely worth the hype. Order your drinks and food at the cash register, bring your receipt to the bar, and finish your coffee and pastry standing. We had a delicious pistachio cornetto, fruit danish, espresso, and cappuccino this morning. Be aware all their coffee comes with sugar, you need to ask for it to not be with sugar (they have signs posted). This was so good though that we will be returning before ending our trip in Roma. Great ambiance, cute souvenirs/food to bring home, very nice people.
google avatar

Komal R.

Yelp
We got the Ice Moka, Monachella (espresso and chocolate) and a couple of croissants. Both drinks were incredible - beautifully presented and perfect mix of coffee and chocolate. They only have outdoor seating which is great for people watching. There was only 1 server who was seating, taking and serving orders. He was doing a fantastic job of managing everything but I felt a little bad for him because of how much workload he has.
google avatar

Yelp
Although this cafe may look/feel like a tourist trap, it's really a great spot for good caffeine. We've been here multiple times over multiple years and the quality of the coffee has remained the same. The espresso is velvety smooth - easy to down multiple! They have an array of other drinks which are all very good. You can take away or sit down and order in the outside area. You will see both tourists and locals alike equally frequent.
google avatar

Claire G.

Yelp
Cute outdoor cafe and excellent selection of cappuccinos and baked goods. Inside the cafe is an abundance of gifts (coffee beans, candy, cups, etc.) that are great ideas for gifts to bring back home. There is only one server who is very helpful if you need some recommendations.
google avatar

Arielle S.

Yelp
A staple espresso bar for a reason. Sant' Eustachio is always packed but the line moves quick and it's well worth the short wait. I tried the cappuccino and it was the best I had in Rome. Also got some coffee to bring home (excited to try) and the most lovely dark chocolate candies filled with coffee. Recommend checking this out.

Yelp
This is where you can get superb coffee to-go in Roma! No surprise that Americans are lined up here and then you will find them strolling the Pantheon neighborhood with the iconic yellow cups in hand. I unabashedly am one of them as I firmly believe one of life's little pleasures is walking with a hot cup of coffee on a chilly day, an iced cold brew on a warm day. But it's also utterly irresistible to linger like a European at one of the tables outside. If you choose to do this, you will pay a little bit more as you are ordering from a waiter and not standing in line and with that, comes a coperto. I gladly pay it when I need to take a break from walking. Our waiter was stern and elegant. I had spied a vegan pastry on the menu but the pastries are not all available every day, as he kindly but sternly informed me. You can't get annoyed here, though. Order a bracing but delicious espresso or a luxurious cappuccino (non dairy milk is available) and bask in the gorgeousness of your ancient surroundings.

Yelp
Ordered: Ice Moka (~€8) Pistachio Cornetti (~€3) Chocolate Cornetti (~€3) Custard Cornetti (~€3): with strawberries on top Aya's take: My last stop in Rome before flying out! We stopped here after hearing a lot about it and honestly, it was good but I wasn't that impressed. Service is a bit slow considering nothing needed to be "made" except the coffee. It was filling and held me until I got on my flight. I'm sure you can find better cafes in the area, but if you find yourself here, you won't be too disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
Great location for a quick pick me up before or after visiting the Pantheon. The place is vibrant with all the yellow. The coffee was very strong and flavorful. I would have come back here if I had more time. Ordered in the right side then moved to the bar on the left side and was served quickly.

Yelp
Came here twice during my trip in Rome in Nov 2022. Sant' Eustachio Il Caffe is one of two SUPER popular cafe's around Pantheon which everyone, everywhere raves above. Little did I know you are supposed to order and pay at the cashier, then bring your ticket to the bar where they prepare your drinks for you. I knew Italy had the practice of quickly enjoying your drink at the bar and leaving vs sitting down at a table outside (which is an option but at a much higher price). Since this was our first cafe during our first visit in Rome, we had to do it like how the Italians do it and go with espressos w/ sugar. Essentially a shot of espresso with foam on top and brown sugar. You take the spoon provided, eat the sugar/foam then shot the espresso. VERY smooth, very flavorful, but much "weaker" than I expected (this began the ruin in taste buds as I can't drink anything lesser in terms of quality since) Guess this is how espresso is SUPPOSED to be ! Had came back near the end of my trip to pick up some coffee beans as well as some chocolate covered coffee beans for home for myself and gifts.

Yelp
From Chicago, stopped in for a cup of coffee after a walking tour. --best coffee (5/5) I've had in Rome. I had a latte macchiato and it was sweet enough without adding sugar. --worst cannoli (1/5) I've ever had. They were wrapped in peanuts and, perhaps, peanut butter? Tasted like a granola bar. I would recommend for coffee.
google avatar

Wayne D.

Yelp
Came here as it's the best coffee place in Rome. Not that busy as I thought. It is better than most other coffee we had in Italy but not necessarily worth visit it if you don't have time. They do have some nice and cute souvenirs
google avatar

Phil N.

Yelp
This was the best coffee place i came across in Rome. They roast their own coffee and have a broad selection of coffee drinks. Boozy ones too ;)
google avatar

Parker S.

Yelp
We came to the Sant Eustachio Emporium on our last day in Rome, and it was a fantastic end to our trip. They have a strong emphasis on coffee/espresso but also have food/pastries. They have a little store you can buy coffee makers, chocolates, and other goodies you can take home with you. We sat down and were served within 10 minutes. The pastries were all tasty and the cappuccinos were in the top three that we had during our trip. The croistini (croissant) dough was sweet as it should be and filled with a good amount of chocolate. I'd also suggest trying Roscoli and Trecaffe to compare to here that way you are absolutely sure to get a great coffee/espresso. Not a super expensive breakfast either at $20 USD. I suggest coming here at least once during a trip to Rome.
google avatar

Alison K.

Yelp
Came to try the coffee granita. Make sure to order at the counter with register, together your ticket to pass to the other side where they make your order. It was worth the stop - the granita was very tasty and refreshing.
google avatar

Yelp
The ambiance is Italy. It is a Roman thing here where all the locals like to come and the tourists so it's always packed around the clock. The service is great. They move you in and get you out in the signage is easy to read. So if your coffee head you know what to get the food is good as well for what it is, the type of place it is and it's some good tourist spot
google avatar

Yelp
Afternoon Coffee and people watching. Always a great combo. We were first planning to stand in line to get coffee at the bar inside. The line was too long. We found a table instead. I think the coffee gods were telling us to sit and relax! On order: Cappuccino. Nice and simple Romeo and Juliet. Coffee mousse, chocolate. Whipped cream. Seconds, please! Whether trying the Roman way or paying extra for the table, enjoy!
google avatar

Ralph E.

Yelp
So it's between here and La Casa del Caffè Tazza d'Oro for the coffee wars in Rome. I actually prefered La Casa del Caffè Tazza d'Oro but there is nothing wrong with Sant' Eustachio. The line here is always long and seems to move slower than you would want it to go. The coffee is OK but personally i found it not as strong as coffee in other places in Rome. Again, not a bad thing but for me I prefer the stronger more flavorful coffee. Service here is "ok" and that is based on Europe standards. Organization seemed a bit off when I visited as well as they may have been short handed since the barista has to cross the floor to get the pastry I ordered. As with all places you order and get a ticket then take your ticket to the bar on the other side and hand it to a barista to prepare your drink. Prices are for standing at the bar and eating/drinking there. Should you like to sit down outside the price is slightly higher so make sure you let them know when you place your order. Again, not a bad place but nothing really exceptional for me so I preferred another coffee bar over this one. Pro Tip - Yes it's obvious but NO CAPPUCCINO after 11AM in Rome. It's considered a breakfast drink and it's simply just not done.
google avatar

Yelp
Delish cappuccino and chocolate pastries. If you're in the area and want a caffe then this is the place to go.
google avatar

Lana B.

Yelp
One of the best in Rome! Sant' Eustachio has smooth and rich espresso. The interior is very vibrant. They have cappuccino cups, coffee beans, espresso cups, mokas, and more for sale. This would be a great place if you are looking for a gift or something to up your coffee game! Believe it or not, if you have a Nespresso machine they have little Nespresso cups! PSA: If you want to sit outside it costs a small charge, otherwise you can stand and drink your coffee at the bar.
google avatar

Cynthia W.

Yelp
Hole in the wall but right off the pantheon and easy to pho in for an afternoon coffee break. Heads up: You have to order from the register first and then bring your receipt to the bar to get your drink and croissant.
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
Tourist beware. We were charged double for sitting outside. I went this morning with my finance, we ordered two cappuccinos and two croissants and our bill came to 20 euros. Way overpriced for what we got. When we reviewed the menu pricing this is exactly double of what was listed. 6 euros per cappuccino instead of 3. We felt taken advantage of because this was not communicated to us. Especially when right next door you can get a cappuccino for 1.5 - 2 euros! That being said coffee was good, but not worth that price at all. In effort to help other tourists who just want a morning pick me up, beware they will try and take advantage.
google avatar

Caleigh T.

Yelp
On our way to the Vatican for a tour, we stopped at San't Eustachio. It is located on a quaint street. We tried a cappuccino which was the best cappuccino I had while in Rome. We also ordered a croissant with crema and strawberries! Delizioso!! This was probably my favorite coffee and breakfast spot. If you are in the area, you must try this place! It is in close proximity to the pantheon and would make a great afternoon treat! As per most coffee places in Italy, you will receive your purchase while standing at the bar. If you aren't in a hurry to make a tour, you can sit outside and enjoy the Italian atmosphere while savoring the delicious flavors.
google avatar

Tiff L.

Yelp
Omg, officially my favorite coffee place in the world. Their stuff is so delicious and they have such a fun collection of coffee items and souvenir items. I unfortunately can't remember the name of the coffee I got but it was so good! It was coffee with some sweet cream on top that just pulled the whole thing together especially for sweet tooths out there. Came back with a few souvenirs for clients and I highly recommend getting their coffee candy, total hit!
google avatar

A M.

Yelp
The ambiance was super cute and gives that classic vibe. The service was not super friendly but was ok, a little terse. We came on a hot day though so maybe the servers were feeling the heat. The coffee was a bit bitter, so if you prefer that sort of dark roasted almost burnt coffee flavor, this is a great spot to try.

S B.

Yelp
We stopped by this place to get my coffee fix since it was close to our bed & breakfast and conveniently located near the Pantheon and shops that we were visiting. I initially ordered a cappuccino but our waiter recommended their iced coffee. I'm glad he did because it was amazing! I savored every last drop. Their coffee is strong and bold... just the way I like it! Although it was a bit on the pricier side for the size, at 7 euros, it was still worth it. I picked up a couple bags of whole beans to take back home for myself and family. As for their sweets, I'm normally not a fan of cannolis but their pistachio cannoli was to die for! Don't miss this place if you're in the area!
google avatar

Amanda W.

Yelp
Very popular and interesting place! A must stop if you're in the area. I went twice. The first was an iced latte and it actually got better as I drank it... which has never happened before in any coffee that I have drank which blew my mind. The second time, I tried the "Romeo & Juliette", and this fell a little flat for me. It was decent but I wouldn't order it again. It gets busy and might be pretty hard to get a table but you can grab to go or drink at the (small) espresso bar. Expect fairly normal prices for the area
google avatar

Kinga H.

Yelp
A favorite among tourists and locals alike. On my first trip ever in Rome years ago and a friend who's a local brought us here. Been here a few times since then after moving to Rome. The place has a vast variety of coffee drinks (standard and a few of their own), a few pastries, and a lot of products to take home. Drink at the counter (typical Italian style) inside or sit at a table outside. Be warned, it gets very crowded at times. I'm not one for thinking anything is worth a long wait, but when I'm the mood for coffee, in the neighborhood and it's not crowded I'll enjoy a coffee here. Some facts: It's a family owned/run establishment apparently established in the 1930s. On my visit today, cashed out for my drink with the owner himself. The coffee is 100% arabica beans, typical of what you'll find around Italy. The aroma is nice when you buy a bag of grounds for at home (much more cost efficient too). 1 star less as it's overpriced for a drink but hype is hype and this place remains a staple in Rome.
google avatar

Torri H.

Yelp
Very strong and smooth coffee- if you're looking for a good pick me up, this is the place to go! Not too overpriced and touristy which I appreciated.
google avatar

Brittney D.

Yelp
I'm an admitted coffee snob, and as one, I should have known better when I walked up. But I got this recommendation from our hotel concierge- ask a local, right? Nah. Not delicious. I didn't enjoy my coffee, nor my pastry.
google avatar

Jordan F.

Yelp
Delicious. It was slow and the people were pleasant if not friendly, but that is kind of how everyone was during our time in Italy. The place was cute and you could feel the history of the place. Definitely worth a trip.

Allison P.

Yelp
Couldn't eat after how rude absolutely every single service person was. I got yelled at by 3 people in a row before giving my food and coffee to someone who was experiencing homelessness. Can't speak on if it tastes good as to me, it can't be worth getting bullied over.
google avatar

Mengxue C.

Yelp
Cappuccino was really good. Service east awesome! Will definitely return for more coffee.
google avatar

Doctor K.

Yelp
This was the best coffee I had in Italy. Great service, great location great ambiance. If you only get one cup this is the place!
google avatar

Shawn H.

Yelp
My wife's favorite coffee shop in Rome, and I discovered their pistachio croissants (aka cornettis) on our most recent trip, which were incredible. (A crispy exterior with some light pistachio cream on the inside.) We also really loved the millefoglies -- both the lemon version and especially the white chocolate one.
google avatar

Zaida O.

Yelp
The coffee was fabulous. The place is small so great to get a quick cup of expresso. There are tables outside for a relaxed cafe experience .

Savannan H.

Yelp
i got a chocolate croissant, frappe, and cappuccino, the croissant was good but not very warm and honestly nothing that special, the grape said it came blended but it was just iced and they honestly might've given me the wrong drink and i do not recommend that drink, the cappuccino was good but again nothing super special i have had better in the city. I read this was a really good cafe and was excited to try, it's below average i would say. Skip it and try one of the other cafes in rome! we sat outside and the street is pretty busy, the tables were very close together but all full, and a bike tour group went in after we ordered so it was a little busy but the service was fine again nothing special
google avatar

Soroosh A.

Yelp
Came here first thing in the morning and sat grabbed coffee. Nice quiet area (at least in the morning) to enjoy a coffee. I enjoyed the grande cappuccino and would reorder again. The apricot croissant and granita con panna were good. I will give Tazza d'Oro the edge for better coffee but Sant' the better outdoor seating/relaxing ambiance
google avatar

Ces A.

Yelp
I will have to rave about our visit here. The best coffee we've had by far. My only regret is going here on our last day and not buying coffee to take home back to the US with us. I checked online and the shipping fee is ridiculous. My son loved their croissants with apricot jam. Mind you, he is very picky and him finishing a croissant with a fruit jam in it is a miracle. So when in Rome, go visit this place and have a cup of Rome's treasure. Update: So they don't sell the jam online but the owners were so gracious to accommodate us. My son couldn't be more happier when he saw what's in the package. So when in Rome, don't forget to drop by this cafe!

Rainier A.

Yelp
Worst attention they give me a bakery item in a plate and as soon as sit they kicked me out
google avatar

Nessa K.

Yelp
Best coffee in Rome! They make it thick and foamy. Must try when in Rome! You can stand in the counter or sit down in the tables.
google avatar

Tammy A.

Yelp
Oh my god, can you bring me back here or export this coffee to the US? Please and thank you! Thank you to our tour guide Alexander Morrietti for introducing us to the best coffee in Italy. I mean I could literally drink this everyday. No wonder, it has a Yelp sticker on it's door and countless other stickers! It's totally deserves every recognition it gets! If I were to ever move to Italy, metaphorically speaking, I would spend my mornings here with a good chat to my husband or friends. We would slowly indulge on just the best expresso ever made in one shot cup. If your reading this, bookmark it! You will not regret that, as you will want to get the coffee exported or bring it to your next destination. Every sip will be bliss.

Yelp
Just a wonderful relic from the past. My daughter and I loved it. Great food, superb coffee
google avatar

Sze Ting L.

Yelp
Fantastic iced coffee (shakerato)! The perfect drink on a hot summer day. Can easily drink two of them.

Yelp
What a great experience in this historic caffe. While in Rome we ate here multiple times and bought different types of coffee drinks, candies and pastries. The staff is great even when it gets crowded. I love this plac

Yelp
Whether water from an ancient aqueduct has anything to do with it is debatable, but the 100% Arabica Beans roasted on-site definitely makes Sant' Eustachio Il Caffè Coffee stand out, while Pastries have also held up their end of the bargain since 1938. Located not far from the Pantheon, and open from 07h30 daily, it is once inside the storied space that guests are greeted briskly, the Beverage menu ranging from simple shots to Mocha while English-fluent servers are glad to offer their suggestions of what is most popular. Now offering whole and ground Beans on-site or via Website, it is after paying that guests are encouraged to watch their drinks be made, the bold base minimally bitter with smooth nuttiness that pairs well to foam or Cocoa, not to mention a variety of housemade Pastries. Rarely one to forgo the sweet stuff, it was mindful of the day's aggressive eating agenda that only four items were selected, the pair of Lobster Tails seeing Nutella a touch too sweet in comparison to White Chocolate while the shattering Millefoglie and citrusy but somewhat soft Sfogliatella fared better.
google avatar

Karissa L.

Yelp
This is a great place to stop by for a cappuccino! I'm not a coffee person and I usually never order espressos or cappuccinos but I came here for the sake of my husband, who is a coffee fanatic. I took a sip of his cappuccino and I was hooked. It was sweet, creamy, and absolutely delicious. Order your drinks and pastries at the counter and then take your ticket to the barista. Sitting down at the cafe costs extra. Or, you can also order your cappuccino to-go. Service was also quick and friendly. Since our hotel was literally right around the corner we ended up coming here three days in a row for our cappuccino fix. Also, try the pistachio croissant! Those are absolutely delicious as well :)

Yelp
The most famous coffee place in Rome. It offers a large selection of coffees and nice pastries. In the shop you can find the coffee capsules for your Nespresso machine and all the accessories you need for your coffee.

Yelp
If you are in Rome on a hot day, there are more options to "iced sweet treat" than just gelato. A "granita" is an Italian version of a sorbet except with coarse crystals. A "granita di caffe" is one with coffee and what Italians considered "real" frappuccinos. They are known for their coffee drinks with a good amount of hot or iced options. A few hours ago I had the best dessert of the entire trip, a granita at nearby La Casa del Tazza d'Oro. To this day that is my gold standard for an iced coffee drink. The rules for these kind of shops are that you make your purchase first, then take your receipt to the bar where they'll make your drink. Service was good and the ordering process was easy. While this is a well known coffee shop, I much prefer the granita at Tazza d'Oro. I think that the quality of the coffee had much to do with the final product as the bitterness of the coffee should complement the sweetness of the creme. In this version the coffee was a bit bland so the final product tasted flat.
