12 Best Indian Restaurants in Charlotte | Eater Carolinas

"A northern Indian and Nepali spot close to the university area, Sarangi offers popular options like a delectable chole bhatura (chickpea curry) pastry and even a Nepalese chow mein, along with momos (dumplings), tandoori, soothing lentil daals, and a variety of fresh and pipping hot naans. A new weekday lunch menu starts at $10." - Shindy Chen

This is my new favorite Indian restaurant in Charlotte. The owner is very friendly and make you feel very welcome. The food is very nicely priced. (Some others in the city are rather pricey- this one is priced correctly) the food is all spot on with great flavors. The heat level on the food is very much on par with normal I get a 6 or 7. This is right as I would expect it.

Google
Fast Service! Nice Ambience! Variety of Indian food options! We tried following:- 1. Chole Bhature - 3.5/5 ( Good, chole can be better, but bhature was up to the mark ) 2. Vegetable Momos - 1/5 ( if u love taste of authentic nepali momos only then u will love) 3. Cold Drink

Google
Sarangi is a good middle ground Indian restaurant. I got the butter chicken and naan. I think the butter chicken was okay but I feel like the extra charge for increase in spice level was unnecessary. Also for the price, portions were small. Indian food is by nature spicy, so why charge extra for the increase in spice? Our server was kind and attentive though. He seemed happy to help us. I would recommend the panner pakora. It was a good appetizer.

Very yummy momo. Chicken served on sizzling claypot with delicious flavors and spices. Spice level 7 is dangerous!!, but I’m not Indian.

One day you don’t care for Indian food and then you go HERE! Let me tell you about fresh and flavorful cuisine in a cute restaurant with friendly and attentive staff. I am a connoisseur of amazing cuisine and exceptional customer service. This was Grade A. Run don’t walk to this spot. I think Sarangi must be Nepalese for Exceptional.

Super nice man took my order! Even when it might of inconvenienced them a little, he had no problem doing it! They were super nice! The atmosphere is nice! Looks clean and has nice aesthetics! The food is great! Lots of sauce, which I love and great taste. Be aware of the spice lol. I got spice level 3 and although it’s still really good, 2 would have been perfect for me. Thank you guys for the great service!

Google
You will be upset someone did not recommend this place sooner. Chicken momos (dumpling style lil bites) veggie fried rice, Tandoori chicken to brag about, Lamb Korma, Garlic Nan. Simply a joy, it's a hidden gem 💎. We were lucky to speak with the owner. He is a happy looking fellow who could talk food all day. 5 years and gets very busy at times. We had an intimate quiet meal before they closed. Glad my friend Dennis recommended the place.

Google
This was my wife and I first time going to an Indian restaurant. We tried butter chicken on a cruise and decided to take a deeper dive in. The garlic Naan 🫓 was outstanding. My wife got the butter chicken which was tasty. No crowd, no wait. They have an alcohol license so you can have a glass of wine. (They do not have any vodka)

Yelp
We were actually trying to find another place when we stumbled on Sarangi. What a pleasant surprise this was. The decor inside was very warm & cozy. Service was very good & attentive. If you like momos & spice, the momos in Szechuan sauce was very good. I appreciate that they gave you a choice of heat levels from 1(very mild) to 10 (very spicy). Both our entrees had just the right amount of heat for our tastes & they were both served with a generous amount of basmati rice. The garlic naan was the perfect accompaniment to soak up all the delicious sauces.

Yelp

Yelp
Passing through Charlotte, I had to stop and try my favorite cuisine. Oh man, this place is absolute fire!!! We were seated promptly and got impeccable service. I wanted to try everything but I got more than I could handle as is! The chili garlic naan was amazing! I loved the momo; they have a lot of flavor and great texture. The tikka masala and korma are actually some of the best I have ever had. Everything here was an absolute delight. The next time I stop through Charlotte, this place is a must!!

Yelp
I really liked this place! More authentic than Botiwala. We ordered the sizzler momo as an appetizer it was tasty; a perfect blend of spicy and savory. I highly recommend it for an appetizer. It was so good it was gone before I could take a picture of it. The butter chicken and tiki masala were good. The cheese naan was the absolute best. It tasted like a special pizza. We also ordered a mango lassi. The service was good. The server helped us explain the menu since it was a little overwhelming because of all the options. It is beautifully decorated and clean. I will definitely be coming here again.

Yelp
I ate dinner at Sarangi tonight. I had the Lamb Biryani and Mango Lassi for dinner. The serving size of Biryani was generous, enough for a couple meals for me. It was very tasty and the service was very polite and helpful.

Yelp
I entreated my husband to decide on the restaurant for a change and he saw this restaurant as I searched on YELP! Needless to say we wound up at Sarangi. Indian food has disappointed in the past so I was reluctant but really wanted to give it a chance. The food was delicious and the restaurant which had just opened at 5p anxiously beckoned us in with the welcoming aromatics of Southeast Asia. The gentleman that greeted us was very nice as was everyone that we encountered. I felt like we were in Nepal. That was thee best Indian cuisine I've ever had. The place was bustling with patrons as we were finishing our meal and we knew why. Service was prompt. The food was so good. The atmosphere was welcoming.

Yelp
Fantastic Nepali authentic food place. The Taste of Nepali food was so delicious here. Service was very kind and helpful to find my taste of food. Just make sure what range of spice you want. Overall ambiance was very delightful. I highly recommend this place to visit for their delicious warm Nepali authentic tasty dishes. Especially their chicken momo. I don't have picture because it was so delicious that I had already and thought later to review this place. Lol! Atlast! I would say everything I Love it! You guys rock.

Yelp
My husband and I wanted to find a new Indian restaurant that served thali lunch plates, and I'm glad we found Sarangi! Sarangi is located at one end of a shopping center off Tryon in University that includes a Starbucks, Food Lion, and Jersey Mike's. Sarangi has a simple decor, with booths and tables for seating. They offer thali plates for lunch on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The veg thali is $12.99, and the meat thali is $14.99. There are several options for your main dish, plus every thali comes standard with butter naan, basmati rice, daal, achar, a side (such as veggie pakora, papad, or aloo tiki), and gulab jamun for dessert. I tried the paneer tikka masala, and my husband had the chicken korma. We were astonished when our thalis arrived - the trays are HUGE! They include two portions of the main entree, four quarters of naan, a sizable bowl of rice, and nice-sized portions of the daal, achar (we used for dipping the pakora), and one gulab jamun. My medium-spiced paneer tikka masala was spicier than the usual medium. My husband's hot chicken korma was very spicy. I suspect other places give us Americanized spice levels. Everything was absolutely delicious. I had enough to bring some leftovers home, but my husband cleared his plate. If I had one complaint, it would be the music playing on the televisions. Next time, we'll sit far away from the TVs. Regardless, we can't wait to return!

Yelp
This was our first time trying Sarangi and we loved it! We ordered carry out and the service was incredible and our food was hot when we picked it up. Everything was so delicious, especially the Butter Chicken and Chicken Momo! We have been trying to find a local Indian place and this is going to be our new regular spot! 10/10 recommend!

Yelp
Was looking for a good quality Indian place since moving from Chicago and I found it, Sarangi! Had dinner tonight, started with Chicken sizzler MoMo (medium spice), Wow that was good and spicy! Might go for the mild next time ha! My wife ordered a Mango Lassi to help cool things down. I ordered my favorite Taj Mahal. We then split Chicken Tikki Masala, basmati rice and one butter naan. The naan was like none other than I had in Chicago, this was light, fluffy and very tasty. The owner mentioned they make every from scratch. Quality was top notch! The ambiance is fine, nothing special, but adequate. We will definitely be back to either eat in or take out, the food is the star!

Yelp
Definitely not the most beautifully decorated place, but that is usually a good sign for Indian/Nepalese food places! The service was a little bit slow and sometimes we had to call over the waiter to get us water etc. but it was made up for by how amazing the food was. I highly recommend the momos! I got chicken momos and the sesame chutney with it was so smooth and flavorful! I also got the chicken hakka noodles which were another big hit! The Nepalese chicken curry and Indian chicken biryani were nothing I had not tried before, but still satisfied my craving and since I order so many dishes and I had lot left over for the next day! I definitely would do take out from here next time! Parking is in the strip mall and easy to access! Also if you like their FB Page they give you 10% off!!!

Yelp
Service is HORRIBLE! Doesn't make it worth waiting for food. For a hole in the wall with lots of competition they need to hire more help.
google avatar

Su R.

Yelp
Great balanced food. Amazing vegetarian options. Great momos. You should try them. Not one dish we ordered was below 4 stars out of 5. Great service. The owner made us feel like we were super guests. Accommodated our small requests. Ambience is as good as it gets for a good Indian restaurant. No noise. It was great eating there.
google avatar

Candice D.

Yelp
Excellent flavors and great service. We went family style. Thank you for a delicious meal!
google avatar

Monica M.

Yelp
Run don't walk to Sarangi. The flavor of the food is the best, don't skip the momo. The owner is ever friendly and very talkative. This adds to the experience in every way. There are special dishes you must order in advance and some weekend only items that I am keen to try for the first time. Please make your way out and support this business. The location has had a difficult history of many places coming and going and we don't want to lose this gem!
google avatar

Phoebe T.

Yelp
delicious food and clean environment! the waiter/owner are all so helpful and kind, making the experience even better! we came on a sunday for lunch with a group of 11 and they were able to seat us right away. all of us love our food, even those who was trying this kind of cuisine for the first time. their garlic naan is very garlicky and one order comes with 4 naan. there are so many options on the menu, looking forward to trying more in the future.
google avatar

Sam W.

Yelp
Samosa chat is out of this world good. Gobi Manchurian was good but I ordered it Hot and I guess that thought that meant white American hot because it was at best medium. They had Tag and Flying Horse for their tall Indian beer options. I had never had Tag before and it was a fairly basic lager. They need to add a stronger option like Hayards 5000. The low point unfortunately was the momos. They explained that because they were fried, they were harder and tougher than the steamed ones. I explained however that these were like shoe leather and inedible. Prices are a bit higher than usual but they have a great sanitation score so I guess all in all it's worth another try.

Yelp
We've eaten at a lot of Indian restaurants in and around Charlotte and this place is top of the list! The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the food is amazing, especially the veggie bryanni. The service was wonderful!
google avatar

D L.

Yelp
One of our favorite Nepalanese food spots in all of Charlotte. Perfect food for a cooler fall evening. Service is spectacular considering it was only one guy hosting/serving everyone in a busy restaurant. Must recommend for anyone in the University area
google avatar

Kasaundra M.

Yelp
I love international food but nothing compares to Indian food. I ordered their Goat Biryani and Chicken 65. First, the portions were so much that I was able ro share with my colleagues and take some home for dinner! Completely a win! Secondly, the food was amazing. It was my colleagues first time eating Indian food and Goat Biryani and he loved it (minus the spicy kevel I added lol). The goat was tender but the rice was a lil mushy for my liking. I'll be back!

Courtney M.

Yelp
The food is really good! It's just expensive for what you get! The portions are lunch size.
google avatar

Elaina D.

Yelp
WOW. I remember when this place was under a different name and I really enjoyed it back before the pandemic days. Recently moved back to the area and decided to try this place. Incredible! Our service was fantastic and the food absolutely to die for. The chicken momo chili was something new to us but was so delicious. The samosa chaat was fantastic. The garlic naan was perfectly garlicky, buttery, and crispy. The chicken biryani was out of this world good- the chicken was perfect and not at all dried out(as we've experienced at other places) 10/10 would recommend and this is our new local spot for Indian food!
google avatar

Terry S.

Yelp
Such a wonderful little Indian/Nepali spot. It's nothing to write home about as far as ambience goes but the food is tremendous! The server we had was super friendly. This will by my go to Indian spot in Charlotte going forward no question. We had the Butter Chicken and Chicken Korma and both were perfectly cooked and tasted as they should. The riced was perfect and the Naan was tremendous.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Wow took a chance on this for 1st date. Did not disappoint. The service was impeccable and the food was some of the best I had in Charlotte. Definitely hit home run on choice of this restaurant. Get the momos

Yelp
Looking for some amazing Indian food? Sarangi is definitely the place to go! They food is just so damn good, I have visited this establishment on several occasions and it never disappoints. The service is good and the servers are there to help and guide you through the menu. Every time I go I try to get something new to eat. This paneer curry was so good and you have to make sure to get some fresh naan, is a match made in heaven. I also always wash it down with a delicious Indian brewed beer! So good I will be back for more, so don't sleep on this delicious restaurant!
google avatar

Yelp
Came to town for a work event and needed to find a good dinner spot. This was a great spot for Indian food ! The service was so welcoming and friendly. It really felt like a family owned vibe and authentic spot. I ordered the butter chicken and garlic nan. It was so very delicious, I ate the whole thing! It came out hot and fresh even though it was a to go order. The service was fast for pickup. I highly recommend this spot for amazing Indian food and great service. No pictures unfortunately :( know it looked amazing too

Garth H.

Yelp
Authentic. I wanted spicy and whew!...so good! My girlfriend wanted less spicy and we were very happy with the depth of flavor expected with Indian cuisine. The owner was a very charming gentleman. We'll be back, great food, great service and at a decent price.

Yelp
Hands down the best Indian food in Charlotte. At one time in my life, I thought I disliked Indian food due to one bad experience. Years ago, I tried it again and fell in love. My favorite spot changed hands and I have been looking for a new place ever since then. Sarangi is not only excellent, but better than anything I have had before - like so good that I didn't know it could be that good. Plus the gentleman working was very nice. When I go to new restaurants, I usually stick to items that are pretty common. Items that should be good or at least decent wherever they are served. For my first time at Sarangi, my husband and I selected Chicken 65, Aalo Gobi, Chana Masala, and garlic naan. The chicken 65 was perfectly cooked - great texture on the chicken and tossed in a creamy lush sauce. Chana Masala was very good as well with a nice complexity of spices. The Aalo Gobi was a real standout dish. The sauce/gravy was heavenly - especially on a piece of garlic naan. I already can't wait to go back and try some more of the menu. Hope this place sticks around!!!

Leigh D.

Yelp
Incredible flavors! The service was extremely friendly and efficient. Ambience is not why you'd go there ... it's all about the food and flavor. Outstanding!!!

Yelp
a few nights ago a friend and i came for dinner. i ordered the vegetable momos, which turned out to be quite disappointing. the dish was utterly flavorless - and without any sort of side dish to supplement for the lack of taste, i couldn't justify finishing the meal, let alone paying upwards of $15 for it. i requested an exchange, and the server informed me that they do not allow exchanges, and insisted that i would have to pay for the meal despite a) having only eaten one momo, and b) my no longer wanting the dish, at all. after a tense but polite back-and-forth with our server, she asked if we would like to discuss the situation with the manager, to which i assented. our conversation with the manager lasted somewhere between 15 - 25 minutes. throughout, the manager was staunch in his defensive position, yet grasping at straws to defend his chef's lackluster dish, as i explained repeatedly that it was tasteless. he continually contradicted himself throughout our talk, but somehow always found a way to assert that the issue was with my taste/palate - even further by suggesting i lacked culinary knowledge on international foods. i brushed off the unnecessary and completely false comment and replied to this by asking him if he or the chef had actually tasted the food prior to serving it. he gave an ambiguous response, to which i then asked more forwardly if he would actually give it a taste now and let me know if i am wrong. he, nor the server or chef, chose to taste it. after listening to his needless backhanded insults and watching him jump through hoops to make me feel bad for daring to challenge the integrity of the food, he eventually acquiesced and took the meal off of our bill. quite the exhausting and upsetting debacle, this was. i was genuinely looking forward to dining here as it was a spur of the moment decision. i suppose i am just one of the unlucky ones!
google avatar

Edmond G.

Yelp
Nothing special here. The high raiting is due to the 10% off offer. I waited over 1.25 hours for my food and saw others arrive order, eat and leave before so hot my food. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and Peshawar for naan. I've had much better than this. I ordered medium spice and had none. The tomato flavoring was a bit too heavy in my opinion. The naan was heavy and not very flavorful.
google avatar

Roxanne H.

Yelp
What a great find for Indian food in Charlotte! My son and I went, had the chicken tikka masala, bindi, goat curry. The goat was tender and flavorful, you get to pick the level of heat, which I appreciate (I prefer on the hotter side). The bindi was so tasty, cooked perfectly, great seasoning. My son enjoyed his chicken. The tandoori chicken was tasty and all generously portioned, we took home leftovers. The service was friendly and inviting. I will definitely stop by next time I'm in town.

Yelp
Found this place on yelp and it did not disappoint! Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The food was amazing! The only reason I couldn't give 5 stars is because one of our orders was wrong. We still ate it and it was delicious.
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
Good quality food and friendly staff. There is some authentic stuff on the menu; try some of that over the butter chicken and stuff like that.
google avatar

Dee C.

Yelp
The hospitality here is incredible. The food is so good, they have an amazing menu to order from. They just got a liquor license so they are building up their shelf. They are legit the most down to earth team I've seen. They were so accommodating. Rod was our server and legit prob the sweetest soul I've come by in life. We closed the place down the food was so good. I felt like I was eating at someone's mother's house. I haven't eaten food that good out a restaurant for a while. This is a must go.

Marquita T.

Yelp
The food was amazing!! The Goat was so tender and so was the Lamb, samosa's were good and the Naan was BIG! They cut it in 4 and it's delicious. We will be coming back!
google avatar

Paul L.

Yelp
We had a nice lunch here while on the road from Cary to Atlanta. There is a nice collection of street-food appetizers: I had mango papdi chaat which was new for me, as well as was a nice appetizer, as well as momo sizzling chicken dumplings with chili. The choices were mild, medium and spicy, and I decided not to risk choosing spicy -- turns out to have been good choice, because medium was at the edge of what I could handle. My wife enjoyed the hakka noodles. And the mango lassi was rich and very flavorful.
google avatar

Ray G.

Yelp
Great place to try some delicious ethnic cuisine my favorite being the veggie momos. The servers are quick and attentive with wonderful interior decorations for the ultimate experience.

Paul ..

Yelp
In a few words: The food was great, very tasty! The prices were reasonable, the ambiance is nothing fancy, but clean. The service was decent. I had to ask our waiter about six times to bring me a glass of water. I finally got it near the end of the meal. He was busy, but not that busy! I gave five stars anyway, because the food was great and everything else about the service was good!

Linda D.

Yelp
Having been to Nepal, Bhutan and India there is a great variety in seasonings from region to region. Sarangi hit many of the flavors we would expect while adjusting enough to hit most American pallets. Loved the momo's and the accompanying sauce and had good success with a number of sag dishes. Definitely worth trying.
google avatar

Tom B.

Yelp
I have been conflicted as to whether to leave a review because I kind of want the "hole-in-the-wall-iness" of this place to remain. Sensational. That's the short version. Doesn't look like a lot when you walk in, but the food speaks volumes. The Dal alone- specifically the tadka- what flavours! The momo (dumplings) are totally worth it. Sizzling platter- tasty as can be- the whole nine yards. We travel from downtown up here even though we have Indian options closer to us because it's really worth it. I know I'm gonna regret saying that next time I come here and there's thousands of people trying to get in, but there you go. I want them to flourish, even if it costs me a wait. Do it!
google avatar

Christopher K.

Yelp
I love this Indian restaurant. The food is always fresh and the flavor is definitely on point. Definitely try the garlic naan. It is so delicious.

Leslie W.

Yelp
Sarangi was fabulous. The owners could not have been more friendly in helping us select Nepali food. It was all delicious, and very reasonably priced. The steamed chicken Momo's were very tasty and well seasoned. The servings were generous, so it's a good value. Ignore the strip mall storefront, and go on in!

Savannah C.

Yelp
Best Indian food in the area! The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated, service is quick for takeout and portions are reasonable. Highly recommend
google avatar

Samirah A.

Yelp
The food was simply just okay, I don't think I'd return to the restaurant. I asked if I could simply replace the rice with my butter chicken because I prefer seasoned rice opposed to plain rice with no flavor. The manager told me that I couldn't and that it's a $4 up-charge if I wanted different rice. The actual butter chicken was subpar, the spice level was needed to mask the blandness of both the rice and the sauce itself. The rice was even cold to the touch coming to the table. I'd say I'm quite disappointed with the quality of food for almost $20. I've had better elsewhere unfortunately.
google avatar

Nishant N.

Yelp
We were craving for Indian food so we searched nearby and came across Sarangi. We made a reservation before so our table was ready when we went for the dinner. The server came with a menu and from the menu we decided to order Hakka Noodles, Vegetable Steamed Chilli Momos, Hara Bhara Kabab, Dahi Puri Chaat, Chicken Steamed Momos, Malai Chicken Kabab and Gulab Jamun. We had to wait for 10-15 minutes before our food started coming. The food that came out was delicious and tasty. Do try the momos here as they are amazing and delicious. The food was freshly made and it was tasty. The only drawback is the wait time as they prepare fresh and hot food sometimes it can be too much but it is worth it.

Caitlin S.

Yelp
Excellent service and casual atmosphere. Came on a Friday so will need to come back for the lunch special! The ginger naan was amazing, and tasted like it was cooked in a wood fire oven. The lamb & chicken were cooked perfectly & the dishes overall were excellent!

Miranda C.

Yelp
The staff is so friendly and accommodating, they let me borrow an umbrella to walk to my car when it was pouring down rain! The food is also phenomenal. The best Saag Paneer I have ever had.

Carlos V.

Yelp
The food was amazing. The staff was very nice and helpful as well. Overall I'd highly recommend this place.
