Saravana Bhavan Review - Upper West Side - New York - The Infatuation

"Indian restaurants are typically pretty good to vegetarians, and Saravaana Bhavan is the perfect example of this. They don’t serve any meat here, and it’s also certified kosher. Come with parents when they just want to have a nice, quiet meal. And, whoever you come with, get a dosa or two. photo credit: Noah Devereaux" - Bryan Kim

It’s a newer building and the interiors were quite clean. Restrooms were quite big and they have an outside hand washing station too. The food was okay. We ordered their millet thali , chole bature ( chole were okay) , cheese pav bhaji and combo 3. Overall liked the convenience of the place. Reasonably priced. We did return their tea because the cup was dirty on the inside.

Google
Randomly found this location while passing by and totally loved it! It’s much better than the Valley Ranch branch. We had stopped going to Saravana Bhavan after a bad experience at the Irving location, but this one really changed our mind. The place was clean, the service was quick, and most importantly, the food was great. We loved everything we tried—except for the filter coffee, which was a bit disappointing.

Google
Disappointed. I was excited to try a little bit of everything, but the server wasn’t helpful in explaining what the dishes were. I found myself eating without really knowing what I was having. They also served a drink without explaining what it was or how to drink it, which added to the confusion.

Google
Absolutely delicious! First time trying this restaurant. Sri gave us excellent recommendations. Do not skip the channa batura and onion rava masala dosa. Sublime umamibombs. We are omnivores and 100,000,000% satiated. Will return tomorrow. 👍🏻💯💖❣️

The tea was very delicious. It Reminded me of tea stalls back in india . The aroma of cardamom and ginger instantly lifted my mood, and the balance of milk, spices, and tea leaves was perfect. It had that authentic homemade flavor I’ve always loved.

Absolutely tasty food. Very good service and pleasant ambience. Chutneys are really good. Meal is perfect. The semiya payasam is a bit watery though ...

Saravana Bhavan is always a reliable place for South Indian vegetarian food. We decided to try their new Richardson outlet for a Friday lunch and opted for their healthier, millet-based dishes. We ordered the millet chapathi, millet lemon rice, millet curd rice, and millet masala dosa, along with the time-tested parotta. Surprisingly, the millet chapathi was incredibly soft, tasty, and left us wanting more. The millet lemon rice was decent, but the curd rice was refrigerated, which made us wonder if it was prepared fresh. The millet masala dosa was good. The parotta was fluffy and came with two delicious accompaniments (Cauliflower Chops & Channa Masala). The biggest disappointment was the filter coffee. It lacked the 'zing' required from a strong decoction and didn't have the thick, frothy milk one expects from an authentic South Indian coffee. Overall, I would rate this experience somewhere between 3.5 and 4. Since I can't give a 3.75, I'm rating it a 4.

Google
Paper roast, Onion rava dosai and chole battura are so yummy, but ghee pongal was not tasty, no trace of ghee, it must have been cooked in the morning, we were there around 4pm. Pongal was not served presentable… we were 3, only 2 water cups, napkins and cutleries provided. Madras coffee was ok.

Yelp
Amazing food, it was fun to eat the Chana Batura with a friend and share and dip together. Delicious food and the waitress was patient to explain to us what the options are. Everything was delicious and it was a good time trying it for the first time and I didn't miss meat at all that meal! They even gave us free reign over the water and refilled when necessary, which I value not having to flag them down each time.

Yelp
I've visited twice and sampled palak paneer, mushroom biryani, gobi manchurian and an idly dish. All were good and spicy. I will say the to go portion seems small but fills me up. Friendly service. I'm going back to try Dosa's next.

Yelp
I haven't been to a Saravanaa Bhavan in years but stopped by for lunch with my team at work. I ordered an onion masala dosa and all of our food came within ten minutes. The dosa came with four chutneys and some sambar. There was made out of I believe ginger that I didn't enjoy at all- it was too overpowering for my taste. I loved the remaining three chutneys, especially the coconut one. The dosa was flaky and crispy and they didn't skimp out on the tasty masala which was flavorful and not too spicy. The ambiance was pretty decent, nothing special but clean. You are getting a good value for money, this place is cheaper compared to other restaurants in the area and a good option for vegans/vegetarians. I will say, it took a long time for us to get our check. They collected our plates, got us to go boxes, and even a survey to fill out- but we waited fifteen minutes for the check and eventfully had to call someone else over for it since our server was nowhere to be found. Overall decent experience though!

Yelp
Our first time. They have wonderful dosa and lots of dishes on the menu. Their chutneys are a bit too salty for my taste. Hubby loves this place so much that he went back again the next day with his friend.

Yelp
We've been watching the restaurant have a steady stream of people coming/going since it opened near us a few months ago and we finally had a chance to check it out. We're not well versed in Indian food (especially the vegetarian dishes) so we were hoping we'd have some help to guide us. We found the menu to be rather large so it was a bit overwhelming given our lack of experience. In fairness, we didn't ask our server for assistance, however, she didn't offer up help when we were struggling with her questions on the options we wanted with the dishes we selected and it was hard to understand her. We needed to ask for more water as she didn't come by and check on us with a regular frequency as the restaurant filled up. As for the food, we enjoyed what we tried. I went with the Palak Paneer which was described as a cottage cheese in a spinach paste. The cottage cheese was more along of the consistency of feta and it was delicious. It came with a side of naan bread to enjoy it with and really made for a great dish. My husband went with the Saravana Special Meal (we weren't clear which version we ordered - the poori or chappathi). It was fun to take the bread and dip it in to each of the small bowls of sauces/items as we didn't have familiarity in what they could be. There were some we liked more than others. The ambiance of the restaurant is open and cheery. We figure we'll return after doing some research on the traditional dishes and/or find a friend who has greater experience to join us!

Yelp
Amazing food! The service was excellent- the waitress was kind and patient enough to explain the different menu items to us. They continued to check up on us as we were eating to ensure everything was ok. Will definitely be back to try other items!

Yelp
It meets up to the standards we have known Saravanaa bhavan to have. Food tasted great, came fast. Service was fine. Thank you, Saravanaa bhavan, for your consistency across the world.

Yelp
Combo 1 is a delightful South Indian meal. The mini dosa is crispy, pairing well with tangy sambar and creamy chutney. The idli is soft and fluffy, perfectly complementing the accompaniments. The khara bath is savory and well-spiced, offering a balanced flavor. The kesri bath is rich and aromatic, with just the right amount of sweetness. The meal ends perfectly with the best filter coffee, making it a satisfying and authentic experience.

Yelp
We went to get the butter masala dosai. Food tastes like we are back in South India for a second

Yelp
Exceptional dosas and the gobi Manchurianwas amazing as well. Definitely coming back with my family and friends!

Sharath M.

Yelp
Sambar Quantity with South Indian tiffins is very less if ordering a to-go. Taste is authentic and decent but definitely a different portions of food while dining in vs to-go

Yelp
New restaurant, good service and awesome tasting food.... Ambiance is also awesome. We tried masala dosa and thali food was good.
