"Sardine is a very cool restaurant. In fact, it’s so nosebleedingly trendy that we don’t even know what to call the part of East London in which it’s located. So we’ve decided to name it Old Angel Canal-ditch - we’re just waiting for Google to update maps with the name. It’s going to catch on. Just wait. The restaurant itself is located on an industrial, art gallery-filled street, just across from the drive-through McDonalds right off City Road, and has all the elements you’d expect from the kind of place that would open in this kind of location. There’s a communal table, an artistic mural painted on the wall, and of course, an open kitchen. There’s even a semi-secret back door that puts you straight into two very famous galleries, without having to go outside. If your reaction here is to say, “Sounds just like the sort of place I’d like,” then go on and get to Sardine. You’ll love it. But if your reaction to communal tables and secret doors to contemporary art galleries elicits an eye roll, we’re here to convince you that you’ll still really enjoy this restaurant. First of all, once you actually enter Sardine, you’ll feel immediately transported from the concrete jungle into a warm, happy place. This restaurant seems to have a naturally sunny disposition, even when it’s cold, dark, and wet outside. And the food is great. The short menu contains southern French-influenced cuisine that changes to match the seasons - which adds to the “we’re not in London anymore” feeling. Think fresh seafood grilled simply, a Marseilles-style bouillabaisse, or salads with cheese and figs. Order a glass of rose, and you might feel like you’re on the Cote d’Azur. But you’re not. You’re in the middle of nowhere London. Sardine’s a great spot to bring anyone, but we particularly suggest bringing your mate who lives in Chelsea, is rarely impressed by anything, and might actually believe that a new neighborhood called Old Angel Canal-ditch exists." - Eileen Twum

Lovely little place with friendly staffs. Love their homemade soda drinks. Flavours of food work ok but portion is quite small. We ordered the brill and were surprised only a small portion of the fish was served. Ended up quite a pricey lunch.

We really enjoyed our dinner at Sardine - we opted for the 3 courses + cocktail for £26. Great menu options and the cocktail was super yummy! Everything we were served was super fresh and the quality of the ingredients was very high. The staff are also quite lovely and very helpful.

Georgous menu, struggled not to order everything. Nothing bad here, and attentive service at very reasonable prices. Forgot to picture much as we were just diving straight in!

Time 2, 2019: Not quite. Menu now £30 for 3 and tiny snacks at £4.5. The eponymous sardines in cured form were not perfectly prepared and definitely not primely fresh. Other dishes okay. Onglet steak was expertly cooked, but the meat, not prime. Almond cake was good. Room major issue, both draughty cold and extremely smoky from poor extractor that the kitchen had not noticed. I got more smoked than the meat. Staff responded well yet never quite felt a cozy place. Time 1, 2017: excellent depth of flavour in simple dishes, for a comely £20/3 courses before 7pm on a Friday lucky day for us, savouring pig cheeks with chickpeas and perfect hake, standout 'negroni' ad-libs of complexity and intensity, affably manly services making kid-friendly accommodations, only meh a single fat finger of octopod for +10.

Visited Sardine for a birthday treat and ordered the shared bouillabaisse following a recommendation. Absolutely amazing! The food was superb and the service, wine and atmosphere were top notch too. Highly recommended for fish lovers and everyone else!

I have been in this bistrot only once for a truffle dinner. It is a cosy French bistrot with friendly members of staff. Food is equally delicious and well prepared. I also liked the fact that they run the thematic dinners inspired by cuisine from different French regions. The price is rather on the high range. Overall the experience was positive and I would come back here.

Sardine is patronised by Stevie Parle of The Dock Kitchen + Rotorino but the chef at the helm is Alex Jackson, who worked at both these restaurants and has now set up his own thing. The cuisine is inspired by Southern European cooking, so think Provence, Italy and Spain. The beef onglet I had was flawless; the brown butter tart utterly sublime. It's elevated home cooking from the heart - you can taste the passion. The space is casual and modern and i like the semi open kitchen where you can watch the guys whip up your meal.

Yelp
We happened by for lunch en route to a nearby gallery. It was one of those extremely satisfying dining experiences. We shared 2 appetizers and 2 main dishes. It was my birthday so I had one of their featured cocktails. Thumbs up. Perfect, tasty, fresh. Scrumptious. Service was warm and welcoming. Well worth the journey to this out of the way gem. As was the Victoria Miro Gallery. Next London visit, we seek out this delightful spot.

Yelp
Fantastic country french restaurant. The place is very cute inside. We went for the Christmas tasting menu which was spectacular. Nothing terribly fancy but solidly executed and well seasoned. Its tough to find good and simple country french food in general. I would totally go back and for Monday's they have their steak-frites special for just 15 quid. Cant beat that.

Yelp
These guys are doing a brilliant job ... very seasonal cooking with a very strong emphasis on good produce with imaginative flair . Location ok ... but it deserves all the success it is getting . Can't wait for the cookbook !

Yelp
If I could give it a six I would. We came last Saturday without reservations and they graciously served us at the bar. We watched him create amazing cocktails all night long,. Super delicious everything. What we experienced was carefully curated but delivered unpretentiously. All the food looked incredible The steak was moist and flavorful and so tender, the side of spinach was so yummy I wanted to take it home for breakfast. We were staying in the area with friends and are dreaming of getting back there one day. Don't miss it!

Yelp
Seafood wasn't fresh(especially clams), very fishy and their smoke exhaust system is really bad....... I smell like after eating BBQ‍‍‍

Yelp
Went for dinner on a weekday night and the place was full!! Really nice atmosphere, very welcoming and friendly staff. The menu is small which I don't mind as long as there are a couple of exciting options there. This was not the case with Sardine's menu. If you have 5 options for starters then I don't think mozzarella with basil and figs and mushrooms on toast can be two of them. Don't get me wrong, the ingredients were great with creamy buffalo mozzarella and perfectly ripe figs but I expect more from a restaurant than picking good ingredients. Which brings us to the mains. Five options for the mains as well and we went for the fish to honor the name of the restaurant. The cod bouillabaisse was unfortunately blunt to say the least and the Dover sole was an awkward dish with the fish being served whole on a rather small dish. Inevitably I found myself struggling with the bones halfway through the meal when the very attentive waitress came to my rescue offering a plate for the bones... There is definitely potential there, but I think the menu needs updating urgently if Sardine wants to shine in the competitive London scene.
