"A stalwart Midtown deli that turns out a quintessential New York deli dog: a snappy, well-cooked dog ($7.95) that can be crowned with flattop-sizzled red onions or sauerkraut and spicy mustard. While also a go-to for brisket and matzo ball soup, the hot dog here stands up to the best in the city." - Nadia Chaudhury
"A much loved, classic Jewish deli that’s been in Murray Hill for over 50 years and even survived a recent fire. Proof that you can’t keep a good pastrami sandwich down. That said, any self respecting Murray Hill resident knows that you don’t come to Sarge’s for the sandwiches. You come for the blintzes. Always the blintzes." - simona sudit
"Another long-running New York deli recommended for traditional pastrami and deli classics, offering a convivial, old-school atmosphere for family meals." - Sarah Bruning Sarah Bruning Sarah Bruning is the special projects and surveys editor at Travel + Leisure, where she has been on staff since 2018. "Sarge’s feels like a cross between a Jewish deli and a diner in all the best ways. Ideally you want a corner booth, so you can stretch out and settle down for a long meal of gigantic proportions. Everything here is huge, from the “appetizer” portion of stuffed cabbage that could feed a family of four to the open-faced, melty-cheese-covered sandwiches. We’re partial to the #20, a tower of corned beef and pastrami on grilled rye bread, covered in broiled swiss cheese and sauerkraut. You’ll be full after this, but get the cheesecake anyway." - will hartman, carina finn koeppicus, kenny yang
"The softball-sized matzo ball at this Murray Hill deli is a little denser than others, and the seasoning is a little lighter, but we still love it. It feels homestyle—as though the cook in the back knows that your grandpa is watching his sodium intake. Portions here are huge, and there are also noodles involved, so come with a friend and be prepared to share." - will hartman, carina finn koeppicus
