The 17 Best Restaurants in New Orleans’s Freret Neighborhood | Eater New Orleans

"Sarita’s Grill Latin Fusion - NOT to be confused with the restaurants of the same name in Baton Rouge - offers a straight forward menu of Mexican and Central American cuisine, with a bonus $2 taco Tuesday menu with $15 bottomless margaritas that won’t disappoint. It’s a homespun little spot where quasadilla, pots of black beans, fried plantains and made to order tacos rule." - Beth D’Addono

Google
Great food and service. Margaritas were good! Enjoyed the shrimp tacos, tamale plate and stuffed avocado w/ shrimp. Beautiful and attractive dining room.

Google
Came by to eat dinner with coworkers and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the enchiladas suizas. I've been living in Louisiana for 6 months, and this is probably the best Mexican food I've had so far. The green sauce had the right amount of kick without overpowering the food. Rice and beans were good. Sweet tea was damn near perfect. Looking forward to coming back.

yancey cabibi

Google
The stuffed avocado was amazing, definitely will be the one thing I always go back for. This was my first time so haven't tried much else on the menu. But what you see in the photo which was very good. And they have bands on Thursdays and Fridays.

Google
Phenomenal, freshly prepared food. I had the shrimp chili relleno, guacamole, and skinny marg. The drink had a flashing ice cube, and was perfect. Food was delicious, shrimp were large and a generous portion. Live music was great!

Google
My coworkers introduced me to Saritas. I was so impressed I took my husband a couple days after. We were so impressed with the atmosphere, the food and the service. We moved from NM to LA a couple years ago and been looking for a good Mexican restaurant. So happy we found Saritas.

Jeremy Gautreau

Google
From the atmosphere to service and food are all good. We had a good time at our friends birthday and even had Happy Birthday sang by the band that was performing. This is surely a place for the family or business meeting. They will accommodate many size groups. I suggest a reservation as this location is always busy.

Google
I love this places atmosphere. Good food. Good drinks. Love the live music.

Haley was an amazing bartender and I suggest anybody to ask for her to serve them

Yelp
Been eating here since well I can't remember we always love this place. Clean place, nice workers, lovely food, great service overall makes my day. Love this place and I think that this restaurant deserves 10 stars

Yelp
Don't recommend at all! Food is nasty, the chips were greasy and u could taste the oil flavor in them, could definitely tell the oil is dirty by the way the chips taste. The Chili on the food taste like canned hot dog chili. Margaritas have no taste it's bad when u struggle to drink a margarita and wanna gag at the HEAVY CHEAP imitation taste it has. Had added a whole bowl of limes and still had to force it down. You can definitely taste the cheap ingredients, it's very prominent and obvious in all the food. Our waitress was super sweet but that's all that was good. It's a Nice place to sit and not eat. Forced ourselves to finish the food and margarita so we wouldn't feel like we wasted our money. Never will be back that was the most horrible food and drinks. This will definitely go on the never return to list. Skip this place and hit diversion pizza behind them..

Yelp
I feel bad about this, but this was absolutely awful. Having been raised on Mexican cuisine (I can make my own tortillas, as well as everything from poblanos to pollo motuleno), THIS IS NOT MEXICAN FOOD! We got takeaway last weekend, and were initially surprised at the teensy portions. And I'm not comparing this to the usual American portions (which are admittedly huge), but just a normal plate for the price they charged. It was a kiddie meal labeled as an adult combo plate. Ours literally had a child sized taco and a miniature taquito. My husband ate the latter with two bites, not trying to be funny, he could have ate it in one. The "enchilada", again the size of half a Snickers bar, was soaked in red spaghetti sauce, NOT enchilada or verde sauce - and if we weren't in polite company, I would have spit it out. Instead, I pushed it around the clam shell and pretended to be full. The yellow (not Spanish) rice had peas and carrots in it, as if it was leftover fried rice (???), and the refried beans were clearly canned with either jalepno juice or cayenne pepper to make it almost inedibly hot. One star for the decent chips, which were oddly in abundance, and the guacamole was not bad. Apologies for not taking pictures of this terrible meal, but again we were in polite company and we were guests.

Yelp
We pass Sarita's daily to and from work and it always seems to draw a crowd. Well this Sunday we decided it wasn't too packed and stopped for lunch. Food was great, waitress was on point and the atmosphere was full of happy, familiar faces. People on the water in South Louisiana are all having fun and eating good. Sarita's is no exception. I'll be back for some shrimp tacos for sure.

Yelp
Great environment & great food. The bean dip and Mona Mexican Pizza were both really good.

Yelp
I have to say this is our go to, because we live close by. On the other hand I would drive an hour for this food and the Margarita's. The wife and I have tried a good bit that is on the menu and have never been disappointed. The salsa is the best we have had anywhere, you can taste all of the fresh ingredients, and it has a little kick of spice! This place is worth the trip and will not disappoint! They also have live music on Thur. - Sat. at night.

Yelp
Amazing. Met a friend there and had the tamales. Very impressed with the food, the ambiance and the service. Wish I lived closer.

Yelp
Great drinks and the food is delicious. The staff is the best. It's a great location being near the The Diversion Canal. Margaritas are to die for.

Yelp
I called ahead and placed my order for picked on my way to work tonight and the manager that answered the phone was polite and helpful. He ensured my order was correct. Once I arrived to pick it up the hostess was polite and friendly and made sure my order was correct again. The food was fresh and hot and once I got to work and was able to eat it. The food was on point. They did it to perfection. By the way, I ordered the beef enchiladas with rice and beans and some queso. This location is the spot to be. Great food and awesome service. They are in a strip mall at the moment but they are building a stand-alone restaurant directly across the street with more parking.

Yelp
Mexican pizza on the appetizer menu is our go to! Our main course was okay, but nothing like our pizza. We now get them to-go for our entree. Our dessert was "fried ice cream" which was nothing of the sort, just ice cream rolled in stale cereal. That was bad! The service was good and friendly. The place is clean and nice, but extremely loud if you go when there's live music playing. I can't say if I'll chance it and return to dine in, but I'll be back for my to go Mexican pizza! It's so yummy!! And large enough to be a meal!

R J.

Yelp
We eat here a lot . We have tried most of the menu. Not had anything bad . Even the burger are great and the boiled seafood. Will keep going back.

Yelp
If you live in Gonzales/St. Amant/ Prarieville or surrounding areas you have got to try this place out. I normally go into Baton Rouge for Mexican food but thought I need to change things up. I'm so glad I came here - now I did end up going on a Friday night and I didn't realize they had a live band so it was a bit loud if you wanted to talk to you family/friends - We ended up yelling to each across the table. I will tell you that the queso is a must (didn't get a picture) it comes out piping hot but oh so delicious over a bed of crispy chips or any other food items. I ordered the puffy tacos - it comes with two hollowed out corn tortilla filled with refried beans, your choice of protein, lettuce, tomatoes and shredded cheese. The tacos are then placed on a thin layer of rice -it's not a full serving of rice - so if your a connoisseur of rice I would say to order an extra side of it. It is also served with a dollop of guacamole on the side. Now I'm a chip kind of gal so I ate my tacos like they were nachos but I used the chips as my dipping shell LOL - the shell the tacos came in turns soft as expected with hot items on it no biggie for me as I didn't eat the taco shells. I will say there are a lot of menu options and anything can be made vegetarian just ask the server of you have any questions. I can honestly say there are two types of ground beef - my husband ordered the Carne (which means beef in Spanish) Combo Plate and the ground beef on his items seemed to be more seasoned and has a kick to it. Overall it was a great experience and I would recommend it

Yelp
Nice Mexican cuisine for a reasonable prices. They have excellent drinks and the puffy taco is exactly how it sounds. Quality ingredients with a good atmosphere.

Yelp
Good food, great staff, and a fun atmosphere. We come here often. The drinks are amazing.

Yelp
Food is always great, and our server West was wonderful! If you haven't tried the stuffed avocado shrimp appetizer, GET IT!

Christie G.

Yelp
Great hostesses! Great servers! Great food from the kitchen! (this was an issue a few months ago when they were severely understaffed with cooks - but that issue has definitely been resolved!) SLOW SLOW bar service - and this is not the first time. Drinks are great but can take 10-15 minutes to get. Live music is a definite plus - but a tad louder than it needs to be. Sarita is the only and best option for Diversion Canal residents. They would have competition if there were other similar restaurants in the immediate area. Recommend Saritas - but expect a wait for their delicious margaritas.

Yelp
Proud to have a place like Sarita's in Maurepas. We order TO GO from here and they always have the order correct and packaged nicely. Generous about a of meat in all of the entree's. Delicious food.

Yelp
Hadn't been here in a while! I was in the mood for a Prickly Pear Margarita. Love their chips and salsa. Service was on point. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. My husband has the Enchiladas de Puerco and he didn't care for it. Said the pork was tough and it was too spicy for his liking. I enjoyed my tacos. I stuck to the basics and ordered the 3 taco plate. Love their rice! We got rained in (more like stormed in) so I ordered a second Prickly Pear . Live music was about to start when we headed out!

Yelp
My first experience here a few years ago I ordered the cheeseburger and this time I decided to stick to the ethnicity associated with the restaurant name. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised with an amazing meal. I started to go for the fajitas, but I figured that may be a bit much. Having to go back to work, I decided to take it easy and order the beef tacos al carbon. Seeing the name I first thought taco but really it was more or less a beef fajita in a lightly toasted flour tortillas. Toasting the tortilla was really a nice touch. Of course inside there was plenty of beef for each bite with sautéed onion and bell pepper. On the side came rice and re fried beans and some lettuce topped with sour cream and guacamole. I did what I could to add rice, beans, guac, and sour cream to every bite. I was blown away by how tasty the lunch.

Yelp
This place is a great place to have a party and a good time. Their margaritas are excellent and they have options for people who don't want Mexican food. They are about to move to a bigger place across the street.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I have been here a few times and the service seems to be just OKAY. The last time we went we waited almost an hour while there were only 3 other tables. The hostess sat us right next to the bar when the entire restaurant was available. There was about 10 people at the bar and they were LOUD and being well... people having a good time at the bar. This was a Wednesday so I wouldn't have thought there would have been a lot of business. So let me paint the picture for you. Manager (larger woman with short dark hair) correcting employees RIGHT next to our table as to why they didn't clean correctly. Customers yelling from the bar to their friends at the table behind us. Our waitress that was playing Houdini and our food that took almost an hour to arrive. Now for the food: My order was wrong..... I DID NOT want to say anything in fear I would continue to wait. The overall food I would say is OKAY, nothing special it's just convent by our house. i understand that somethings are out of the restruants hands but needless to say we will not be back

Yelp
Tony was very friendly and helpful behind the bar. We sat at the bar to share some delicious nachos plus tamales. We had frozen margaritas. Tony was able to locate the hockey playoffs for me on the big tv. We had a great dinner and evening here.

Kevin C.

Yelp
Went to the new Saritas. The ambience was better, food was great, the service was terrible. Over COVID I learned appreciate the value of takeout, and will reserve to only takeout moving forward. By the way, I sat at the bar for my food with the owner across from me and absolutely no sense of urgency for the guests. He watched his staff of 3 stand at the bar and talk, being oblivious to the customers. My advise is to downsize to a takeout restaurant and focus on the food, since service management isn't the strength of this joint. Or walk 100 feet behind you and hire/pay the owner of diversion pizza to help.

Yelp
Not the best but definitely not the worst. Sat in the enclosed patio area to enjoy the sunlight. There are gaps between the curtains and the posts and mosquitoes that are abound in the greenery get in. Not as nice as being on the river. Food was pretty good just not very spicy and the only condiments to add heat are mediocre hot sauces with very few scovilles. Fresh chopped cilantro is available. Frozen margaritas were good. Chipped up plastic stemware was not. They have recovered well from the flood and have new woodwork from four feet down. The warm tortilla chips were great but the sopapillas were almost like churros, kinda hard and chewy. Can't see thirty minutes to go there instead of El Magey or El Rancho.

Yelp
My husband and I eat at Sarita's at least once a week, sometimes twice. It is about a ten minute drive for us. We have not ever ordered anything that was not delicious and the service is always great. Like all restaurants, sometimes they have new waiters/waitresses, but they train them all the same it seems to us. It does not taste like Mexican food, but latin food. We love the food and the Margaritas are delicious! If the food was not consistently good, we would not go so often. We have never had a sub par tasting meal. The restaurant is very clean. I have never had poorly washed utensils or plates. Service is as good as the food. This is where we bring company or family on eat outs. The food is worth every dime we spend. The meals are worth what we pay for as we have eaten at some very pricey places and the food was not good. Sarita's prices are reasonably priced!

Yelp
Best fresh made salsa & chips around. Great service & prices. Shrimp fajitas are amazing. We eat there quite regularly.

Yelp
Surprisingly different!! Not TexMex. As usual. Very friendly staff, clean all around and beautiful patio area.

Yelp
I have visited this location many times. On my most recent visit, we were helped by a young lady named McKenzie. While the restaurant seemed busy, the service was terrific and the food was great. It wasn't until after we ate that the manager let us know they were significantly short staffed that evening. Based on our experience, you couldn't tell one bit. I really look forward to my next visit!

Brett C.

Yelp
We tend to lean toward Mexican if we're headed out and Sarita's is good. Light crispy chips with outstanding salsa is always a good indicator of what's to come and the main course doesn't disappoint. Taco's al Carbon are great and the fajita steaks are fantastic. We stop here a few times a month easily. My wife loves the tacos and enchiladas and my kids always ask for their quesadillas. Great place for Mexican if you're in the area
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and good service. A great place to meet your family and friends. The owner walks around making sure customers are happy. Not just another Mexican restaurant. Live music Friday, Saturday & Sunday nights.

Sarah T.

Yelp
I visited Saritas on Sunday evening and they had live music even though it was early in the afternoon.. Too cool! I've always ordered the standard, Mexican entree, it is after all a Mexican restaurant. Today, I ordered a hamburger. Swiss cheese and bacon hamburger fully dressed in a Chibatta bun with fries.. The bread was toasted a little too much ( very dark oven marks on the top) and the fries were pretty crispy too. A bit surprising since they were not busy. Next time I will ask for lightly toasted and more onions! Lol. Try it!

Yelp
LOVE THIS PLACE! ! great staff and awesome food, love the live music and the owner is one of the nicest men you will meet!!!!

Yelp
The atmosphere here is very unique .. there are bands , great staff , and what restaurant do you actually get to see the owner almost every night (: I would highly recommend this place to anyone especially if you are starving the food comes out way faster than any other place I have dined in. If you have a sweet tooth I would also recommend the apple pie with vanilla ice cream .. it is to die for ! If you are looking to have a great time , enjoy some good ole homemade margaritas , and awesome Latin American food head over to saritas ... they even have a kid's night on Tuesday's. It's a great environment for any event or simple night out.

Tara S.

Yelp
Place has continued declining with time. Don't expect superior service with this place. Our family has done family dinners & to go orders for years. As of recently, we've had several orders messed up & management makes excuses & actually raises their voice in defense of mistakes when feedback is given. Our family is done giving our business to them because there is no consistently. If you have to have Mexican, check your ticket & order because "mistakes happen."

Sarah B.

Yelp
So good! The margaritas are awesome as well as the chicken burrito! Would def recommend this place! Cheese dip was really good too :-)

Ricky D.

Yelp
This place was much better when there was a view of the water. Not sure that it's worth the drive now that they've moved into a shopping center. The atmosphere at the previous location was 90% of the reason we went.

Chloe M.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I visited today for the first time in about a year. He got a beef burrito that was supposed to have chili con carne on top but what he got looked and tasted like it had come straight out of a can of chili that had not been seasoned whatsoever. I tasted it and it had no flavor. Our refried beans that came as a side consisted of white rice with pieces of vegetable in it. It tasted like those 90 sec rice dinners that come in a bag. The worst part of our meal was the dessert which took over 20 minutes to come out after ordering. It was apple pie with vanilla ice cream. The crust tasted like t had been frozen for a very long time then defrosted while we waited those 20 minutes for our meal. The ice cream tasted like an off brand you'd get from the dollar store. We couldn't believe it was $7. Overall, I feel the quality of the food has gone down hill since my past visits. Pros: Our server was very attentive and friendly and it has a nice atmosphere.
