"Sau Voi, a Chinatown corner shop that sold lottery tickets and CDs alongside one of the city’s best banh mi sandwiches, has closed. The Vietnamese sandwiches were made on demi-baguettes and warmed in a toaster oven at a counter inside the shop, which opened three decades ago; the banh mis were admired by critics and diners alike." - Eater Staff

Classic spot for inexpensive and tasty Bańh Mì and Vietnamese coffee. It's a small spot only for takeout but the ladies are lovely and super speedy. If you aren't after food grab some smokes, a lottery ticket and browse the CD's.

My mom 👩‍👦 would have *nước đá nhãn* (🇻🇳 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘤𝘦 ) in the fridge waiting to quench the thirst of us children 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦. I would use the little spheres as a vessel to drink the sugar water 💧, 2 slurps before devouring these lychee-like fruits. And the high concentration of Vitamin C is a plus 👍🏻. Can you tell the difference between longan and lychee?

I make a pilgrimage to this place once every so often from my midtown place of work. It's that good. Very generously filled with ham, pate, cilantro, pickles. The bread is amazing. Nice and crusty yet fresh inside. The summer rolls are always awesome as well. 2 big rolls for 3 bucks. You can't go wrong with Sau Voi

Almost perfect Bahn Mi. The bread they use can be a little fresher. I suspect they do not have fresh brought in daily. The pate they put in the combo sandwich can be almost unnoticed because there is so little. The amount of meat however is a nice amount. They are also very generous with the pickled vegetables and cilantro. I love a bahn mi with lots of vegetables and herbs.

I decided to go to this restaurant after my coworker recommended this sandwich spot. When I walked in from outside, it looks like a whole in the wall but I decided to enter because my coworker insisted his sandwich was really good. I wanted to ordered “ Banh Mi sate ga” but they ran out of it and cashier referred me to purchased the “banh mi ha nuong”. I purchased the sandwich and returned to my office. I was very excited to have this sandwich because my coworker spoke so much about how great it was and I should go. As I opened the sandwich,I noticed that it was packaged a little sloppy. I took a bite of the sandwich and I bit something hard. I opened the sandwich and noticed a few chicken feathers with the actual skin of the chicken. My stomach turned and got very upset. I almost throw up. I was so upset after hearing and seeing all the great reviews and having such a bad experience. I will never return to this location or recommend anyone to go here. I wish I can give no stars but it doesn’t allow me to.

After I saw all of the reviews and great rating, I got excited! I'm a huge fan of more traditional banh mi. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to disagree with the reviews, but not fully at the fault of Sau Voi. If you've been there you know that it's a tiny counter in the corner of a tiny little Asian CD shop with no adequate kitchen apparatus. Quite strange, but so are a lot of set ups in Chinatown. That's part of the charm of the neighborhood :-P As for the sandwich, the bread was stale, the pork was cold and dry and the cilantro was sparse. I was asked if I wanted it spicy. I said yes. There was no spice to it whatsoever. It wasn't even mildly spicy. It was non existent. This was, sadly, an underwhelming sandwich. : ( The quest for the best bahn mi continues. Banh Mi Zon still in first place.

It's a good spot if you need to grab a sandwich and run. I get my hero when I walk to work from the Path train. Normally there is a small wait in the beginning of the day. The staff is always friendly to me
