Sausal - Review - El Segundo - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Sausal is a modern Mexican restaurant in downtown El Segundo. While they have an excellent Happy Hour ($6 margaritas, sangria, beer, and wine) and a nice front patio, the food is mediocre and surprisingly expensive ($7 for one barbacoa taco). If you come here to unwind with coworkers and drink margaritas until Happy Hour ends, you’ll be fine. Otherwise, you don’t need to go out of your way to come here." - Brant Cox

Wow!!! What an amazing place. Just happened to stumble in here before a flight from LAX and ended up at their 4 to 6pm Happy Hour. Also, they only serve wings on Mondays and they are the Top 3 best wings I've ever had. They were the size of turkey legs The service was fantastic. The drinks were great. The food was so delicious. I highly recommend! Can't wait to come back.

This place was such a treat to go to. My cousin took me for a quick Mexican late lunch during a transit in LA. And it didn’t disappoint. The nachos were whole nachos like I’d never seen before. We ordered - chatted corn elote - ceviche - grilled shrimp salad - lamb enchilada - empanadas - sticky date - coconut flan Every single thing was delicious barring the sticky toffee which was nothing to write home about. But a British dish in a Mexican place, I won’t hold them to that. That coconut flan, ceviche and corn was out of this world. This is a must try for Mexican food lovers.

Came here for my husband’s birthday dinner and had an amazing experience! We started with cocktails and the chips and guac, which were fresh and delicious. For dinner, I got the tacos and my husband had the carne asada—everything was packed with flavor. The service was fast and super friendly, which made the night even better. We haven’t stopped thinking about this place, and we live across the country!

Google
I realize I didn't get pictures of the food, just the exterior of the building. Maybe that is a reflection of our opinion on how mediocre the food was. I will admit, the service was pretty good. We had guacamole and chips, the wife thought it was pretty delicious. However, there was a bit too much lime juice in the guac and the chips were full, uncut tortillas and some were absolutely smothered in salt. I like salt, this was too much salt. The chicken pozole soup was underwhelming and bland. I should have scraped my chip salt into the soup. The nachos were ok, not quite what I was expecting. The large, full size beans and odd cheese sauce were not my favorite. I would probably try a different restaurant if I were to visit the area again.

Stopped by for happy hour on a Friday and had a great experience. The place was packed, but the staff were very accommodating and made sure to find us a table quickly. Service was great as well. Our server was very knowledgeable, kind, and made sure we had everything we needed. Food was delicious! I would recommend trying several of the small plates on the happy hour menu, they're small but filling. The croquettes and the tacos were the real winners here! We loved this place and will definitely be back!

Google
I’ve been here a few times now, twice with work colleagues and once with my husband as I know the tacos are good! The staff are super friendly and it’s a busy place but you’re never left waiting for anything. The food speaks for itself and is really tasty! They’re also really good with explaining if things are spicy or not.

Lovely spot and decor. Found a couple vegetarian options! I ordered the guac and the Corn, Cheese & Broccoli Enchiladas with Salsa Casero de Tomate - both were great.

Google
Really enjoyed this upscale Mexican restaurant in downtown El Segundo for date night with my wife. Mixed drinks were very well done. Recommend the El Viejo. Food has decent portions and rich flavors. Great ambiance, stylish bar area, comfortable seating, & warm lighting. I think we'll be back. Love the area, but this spot is an upgrade to the nearby bars and breweries.

Yelp
Impressed with Sausal's nice atmosphere and incredible service. We had a 5:30pm reservation on a Saturday night with a kiddo so we got to take advantage of the tail-end of happy hour which apparently is everyday. It was busy when we checked-in but the hostess was pleasant and made it a point to engage our kiddo and he immediately felt comfortable. Kate was our server and she was very welcoming and attentive. The salsa is great - has a smokey undertone. I had the branzino which was cooked to perfection. It's a must try dish if you like fish. A kids menu was available which is always a plus in our book and included a scoop of ice cream with cookies and cream as an ice cream flavor option. Our kid was in heaven and has already made plans to return back to sit in the patio and bring our dog, lol. All in all a wonderful dining experience and a restaurant to be checked out if you're in the El Segundo area.

Yelp
5 stars for their services! All staffs are very polite, friendly and very welcoming! ( specially nick). Their Service was fast and they served our Food fresh and hot. We came here for our friend's bday. They played good music and the place was cleaned and nicely decorated. Tips- Guacamole and their Chips was so good! Parking - is hard specially weekend.

Yelp
Delicious food and friendly welcoming staff. Easy to find parking. Cute Christmas gift decoration on the wall and overall presentation is great. I probably will not be back since I'm not a local. So we wanted to try as much food from the menu as possible. So we ordered several small dishes. Everything I tried was delish and full of flavor. If I lived here I'd definitely come back!

Yelp
My first time trying out this restaurant and I was not disappointed! I came here for a christmas work luncheon with my co-workers and had so much fun! The service was very welcoming and friendly, and the food was soooo good! I ordered a bowl with oak fire grilled chicken which was amazing! I'll have to try other stuff on the menu next time! Definitely a cute spot for happy hour. Parking: Street parking and a parking lot behind the restaurant

Yelp
Emily at the bar helped us with drinks and food choices. The Freshly Made Guacamole was very tasty and only 7$ for half size Branzino Filet was 36$ , also amazing!

Yelp
We walked in on christmas eve, since this was one of the few places open, and were pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Beef Birria Queso-Tacos that came with their rice and beans. I love how meaty and tender the beef was. It was tender enough to fall apart without being overly fatty. I also don't usually like radishes or raw onions but here they added a nice freshness and acidity. It's definitely not a street taco and feels very elevated. Their rice was probably one of my favorite flavored rices I've had - it tasted strongly of herbs and had a citrusy aftertaste.

Yelp
Went to Sausal with three others yesterday, Saturday. We arrived at 7pm and were lucky that it wasn't too busy so we were seated immediately. The esthetic of the place was great and it wasn't too loud to have a conversation within our group. Our server was great. He had a complete understanding of the menu which was necessary because one of our diners have food allergies and I don't enjoy spicy food. We were both easily able to find items that were both delicious without any alterations needed for the dish. They have a vast and tasty drink menu. Our table got margaritas including the "Latin Lover" which was the favorite of the table. Everyone really enjoyed what they ordered so we recommend the Salsa trinity with chips and the queso dip. Then we got the Cheese, corn & Broccoli Enchiladas, the Chicken Enchiladas, the Short Rib Birria Ques-Tacos and the Chorizo taco. We parked at the theater parking up the hill, which we were told is good on the weekend.

Yelp
I rarely frequent El Segundo aside from having dinner at Jame (next door) a few times and surprised to find a rare gem. Sausal is an upscale Mexican restaurant located in the old town part of El Segunda. Aside from the tasty dishes here, the service here is superb. We came here for brunch not too long ago. It was fairly empty but then again so is this part of town. The ceviche is refreshing with fish swimming in coconut leche de tigre, lime, pepitas, cilantro and chiles. It's served with frisbee like tostadas. I ordered a chicken pozole soup. Pretty good and nice and tangy. Wish they used dark meat instead of breast which lacked fatty flavor. The fish tacos were freshly made. Crispy fish and house made warm tortillas with charred tomato crema on the side were delicious. Pork chili verde with corn elote was very good. Served with corn tortillas. I only ate half of this dish since it was very rich in flavor and a lot of food. The best dish was the corn, cheese, & broccoli enchiladas with salsa casero de tomate was the highlight dish. No meat and great without. The creamy tomato enchilada sauce was delicious. Actually, this sauce could be a great pasta sauce too. Service here was very attentive and friendly. The hostess here could use customer training though and some warmth and attentiveness. Overall, this restaurant is very good and reasonably priced.

Yelp
SAUSAL was AMAZING! We stayed from our 5pm reservation through closing because it was such a blast. Our server was able to recommend great bites for our group and new drinks to try out. Not a single dull moment was had during that night because everything was simply perfect! Shout out to the entire staff for being kind and welcoming to everyone that walks through your door. We can't wait to come back.

Yelp
We went on a week day and luckily hit the LA Restaurant week lunch special. It was a great deal! We got to pick a salad, pozole or tortilla soup and a taco of our choice. I had the grilled chicken taco and it was delicious. I also really liked their pozole. It was verde, my favorite kind. I also had a delicious spicy margarita. Overall restaurant is nice and open, very comfortable and cute patio. Hostess was kind and server was good. There was plenty of two hour parking in a lot behind restaurant. I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Nisha B.

Yelp
Excellent service by Benjamin, the salsa trio was delicious and so were my tacos (I had the fish and the butternut squash). I used to love the potato tacos but didn't try them this time! Quick and efficient with every good service! My only small gripe was the strong smell of fabuloso as soon as you walk in but that quickly goes away!

Yelp
The best Mexican in the South Bay. Great flavor profiles especially the chicken taco and their artisan salad is excellent. Top notch service in an inviting ambiance with a very friendly staff. Worth a trip to El Segundo and the have a top notch bar as well.

Yelp
Nice vibes. We sat at the bar and ordered happy hour tacos , the bar tender was friendly. Drinks were good. May stop in for quick drinks in the future, we were going somewhere around the corner from here so made sense to stop here.

Yelp
The Mrs. and I had dinner at Sausal last night. We had a reservation for 7 p.m and arrived around 6:50. Inside, the restaurant was packed but we decided to sit outside. Even though it was kind of chili. The best way to describe Sausal is elevated Mexican cuisine. Based upon the menu it is easy to tell that Chef Ann Conness tries and succeeds at elevating Mexican cuisine while still holding on to the traditional flavors we've all come to know and love. Our amazing waiter, Jose, arrived to take our order. I started off with a Margarita while the Mrs. and I looked over the menu. We were stuck on a few appetizers and I was stuck on two of the mains. The Mrs. asked Jose for some recommendations. We ended up ordering the guacamole and chips. It was just ok. It could have used a bit more line. The chips were really good. They were tortillas that were fried whole. We also ordered a side of the tomato salsa. The Mrs. and I decided to share the Chicken Enchiladas with Cashew Mole. Jose offered to split the portion without us even having to ask. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and it was the first time that I've had enchiladas that were crispy. Almost like taquitos. The mole wasn't obviously your traditional mole. Jose warned us it was spicy and indeed it was but we loved it. Even though we slit the enchiladas, Jose brought them on separate plates and each of us got our own portion smashed black beans and verde rice. Totally unexpected. We also weren't charged a split charge. Again, totally unexpected. For dessert we enjoyed the "Café con Leche" Panna Cotta. Incredible is all I have to say. The restaurant has a beautiful interior. Very modern and a lot of clean lines and natural earth tones. The bar was really pretty. We were able to easily find parking on the street. We just had to walk about a block or so but it was not big deal.

Yelp
This review is based purely on the Happy Hour. Everything was solid, my favorite was the shrimp taco I even ordered a couple more after!!! I also really liked the jalapeño poppers. The rum punch had a good sweetness to it and was refreshing. Service was very attentive and the restaurant has a rather fancy inside and a nice outside. I would go here if in the area wanting some tasty happy hour food and some drinks.
google avatar

Vanessa R.

Yelp
My family and I came here for a birthday lunch for my mom. Food was decently good. Chips and Guacamole were fresh and tasty. The cilantro lime rice was also an all around favorite for my family and I. If I had to recommend off the menu, I'd go for the Arroz Con Pollo! I also love the interior of the restaurant: spacious, bright, and aesthetic. Also to note: Parking is street parking and the street is fairly busy but I was able to find parking within a couple minutes and only down the street.
google avatar

Alisha F.

Yelp
I've dined here twice now, for both lunch and dinner. A bit disappointed with the food and drinks on both occasions. The food is over salted and doesn't taste as if it was made fresh to order. The margaritas were either too sweet or too sour. They do have a well-priced happy hour menu, and the jalapeño poppers were delicious. The ambiance is nice with skylights and a fireplace. Would come back again but only for a light happy hour.
google avatar

Tiffany Y.

Yelp
This is a beautiful Mexican restaurant in El Segundo -- I loved the ambiance in here and how nice the bar looked. I ordered a strawberry margarita and they were even able to make it spicy upon request. We all shared salsa, guac, and queso, which were delicious. As an entree, I split the gumbo special and the shrimp fajitas ($29.50) with a friend. The gumbo was good, but I wish it had a bit more seasoning. Similarly, the fajitas were solid, but I wish the shrimp had more flavor. Overall, Sausal is a nice spot in the downtown -- it's a bit pricey, but the food is good and the ambiance is even better!
google avatar

Yelp
Tianna, the host greeted us so welcoming and friendly, she really set a wonderful start to our dinner visit! Our server was nice and food came out hot & tasty. ** Chili Relleños was beautifully plated! **Arroz con Pollo was so good! so flavorful! ** Guacamole and chips were also good, the guac was fresh and delicious! Tortilla chips were served warm and they offer a nice pour on their glass of wine. Lots of free parking in the parking lot behind the restaurant and on the street. We'll definitely visit again (:

Yelp
Yum! This place is great! Their jalapeño margaritas are super yum! And their salsas are fantastic too. Oh, and super fabulous guacamole pretty much everything is good here and the service was great too.

Yelp
Sausal is always a wonderful place to eat. The food is always delicious and fresh and the service is great. I highly recommend their salad and for lunch. Their chicken burrito is outstanding.

Yelp
Food was good! I ordered a ceasar salad with shrimp, my son got the nachos and my husband got the birria taco plate. Nick was our waiter and was outstanding! The environment was a whole vibe. The drinks were outstanding!

Yelp
Great food. Good drinks service was present and accommodating. I would recommend the lamb and the chicken entrees.

Yelp
I was looking for a quick fix before a concert and this place didn't disappoint. I was running a little late and called the restaurant and they were really accommodating in our time adjustment. We had a party of five and we got seated quietly in the indoor dining since it was a bit chilly this November. The well lit bar and open entrance was definitely cozy We ordered a round of tacos and steaks and a cup of chicken pozole. Tacos were amazing and so was the steak. Pozole was a little bland but it was still delicious for a chilly evening. One thing is a plus we can do individual checks which was again super accommodating. Thanks for having us there.

Manny G.

Yelp
Great food and ambiance. Awesome and authentic spot in el segundo. A bit pricey but it's worth it.

Yelp
Thank goodness for DineLA! Hubby & I dined here once in the Fall of '22 and once in the Spring of '23. Then I just had to return once more at lunchtime during the Spring DineLA just for the Chicken Pozole. We have only come here for the DineLA menus! We love the menu options and deals! Sausal is a nice open and airy restaurant located in El Segundo. The ambiance is casual. They have a spacious bar area. Happy Hour Menu has 5 food items and specials on some beer, wines, and drinks. Along with the DineLA Menu, we ended up having an early dinner, so we tried the Jalapeño Poppers from the Happy Hour Menu. These are not your typical fried Jalapeño Poppers. They might be grilled or broiled. They are stuffed with Bacon, Cheese, and Pepitas. I really enjoyed it. It's served with an Habanero Salsa that adds a little heat. We asked for some regular salsa to go with our meal and our waitress brought some out. We were shocked to find it on our bill because we weren't told there was a charge for it. You can order salsa a la carte for $3.50 each. Now we know. They don't offer complimentary chips & salsa. You can order some. It's called Salsa Trinity with Chips for $7.50. It would be a nice touch to just give us chips & a house salsa without charging for it, If you order the right dish, it includes a small bit of salsa. Not every dish comes with salsa. I'm sorry I'm so fixated on paying for salsa at a Mexican Restaurant. We know this isn't the only Mexican restaurant that charges for salsa, but maybe they'll reconsider this salsa situation! I truly enjoyed the Chicken Pozole Soup! I'm not sure what it is about it, but I relished every.single.bite! We also liked the Pork Chili Verde with Charred Corn Elote! I had a Beef Barbacoa Taco and it was delicious! It has the salsa on the side and I added the right amount to my taco! Yummy!! We have also had the Lamb Barbacoa Enchiladas, Sopes with Duck Carnitas & Black Mole, Empanadas, & Halibut Ceviche. For the Dinner DineLA, they start you off with a specific cocktail. If you don't want it, they let you switch it out for the Agua Fresca. We need to return for their regular menu to try some of their other items. I would love to try the Scottish Salmon on another visit, but chances are, we'll be back for the DineLA again, probably in Spring of 2024. 10-22-2022 Happy Hour Jalapeño Poppers https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/sausal-el-segundo?select=vqjUGKyAwLsFC2vyIP1phA DineLA: Sopes with Duck Carnitas & Black Mole https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/sausal-el-segundo?select=-lj6ECXUvpns_RGKH1_2dg DineLA Pork Chili Verde with Charred Corn Elote & Lamb Barbacoa Enchiladas https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/sausal-el-segundo?select=Bjt4qramEdNT_E94xrNVoA DineLA: Pork Chili Verde with Charred Corn Elote https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/sausal-el-segundo?select=GxtB3VSXRwRolUeC_MIpEg

Yelp
Went here for lunch right when they opened and got served right away. The food was delicious. The barbacoa bowl with pork was delightful. I got it with the green rice that also had chorizo. The dish had a decent amount of kick. I would get the dish again for sure.

Albert H.

Yelp
Food is always tasty with twists on regular dishes. Good portions and nicely platted. Nice atmosphere and good for date night. Been 5 or so times.

Jeff D.

Yelp
Fairly solid Mexican fare. The Pozole Soup was especially good as were the combination chips and salsas. Drinks were also top notch. Entree and drinks will probably run you about $40 - $50 per person. Service was excellent. Parking is a bit of a challenge on a weekend evening - but manageable.
google avatar

Laura R.

Yelp
This place is so gas. We came here during happy hours and got a few drinks and tacos. The staff is on top of it and the food is delicious! This is our second time back during their lunch menu and still amazing. Definitely recommend coming during happy hour but if you happen to be there too early the price is worth the food, service and vibes!
google avatar

Yelp
Decided to finally try Sausals brunch menu and it did not disappoint. Strawberry Tres Leches were delicious. Some of the best pancakes I've ever had. The pancakes itself were extremely warm and soft. The cream base that is added was so tasty. Would get and recommend this to anyone that is a fan of pancakes. The steak Chilaquiles were also phenomenal. Chips were crispy and fresh, the green salsa was very flavorful and the steak was incredible. Sausal honestly has never disappointed me or anyone that I have brought.

Yelp
Last minute dinner date, decided to try Sausal. Hostess: friendly We got seated instantly, we were told we had 1.5 hrs to return the table. At first I thought, we are going to rush to eat, but once seated we were helped immediately and service was speedy. Food arrived really quickly, we ate and were definitely satisfied with the decor, ambiance and food. Will definitely be returning to try something else.

Yelp
I love coming here for happy hour after a long day. Sausal is located in Downtown El Segundo. Sausal's interior is very unique and transports you into a luxurious Mexican villa. Their "menu borrows inspiration from the foundational elements of Rancho cooking: Wood Fire, Smoke, and Slow-Roasting [and] It celebrates the bold flavors of Mexican cuisine" (quoted from their website). They offer Happy Hour every day from 3 PM to 6 PM and special Tequila and Mezcal cocktail and food pairing events. Keep an eye out! What we tried: - Monday Tlayuda Special - a.k.a. Oaxacan pizza with Oaxacan cheese, black beans, avocado, corn (add spicy chorizo +$4) - Thursday Special Not-Cho Mama's NACHOS - beef picadillo, spicy pork chorizo, sour cream, queso fundido, charro beans, pico de gallo, pickled jalapeños & onions, guacamole Hot tip: I am a nacho girl all day every day, but I went on a Monday evening. If you ask your server nicely, they might put in a favor and help a girl get the Thursday special on a Monday night. Instagram: @jessgoeat

Yelp
Fabulous! So good we came back the next day. Our group had the delicious fish tacos, yummy pork chorizo tacos and two different salads as well as the wonderful large chips with three different salsas. Everything was to die for. Oh, and the margaritas? Heavenly. The service is incredible. Really friendly and attentive.

Yelp
As always, this place is great. George was an exceptional server and gave excellent tequila recommendations. Great experience all around

Yelp
After following Sausal on instagram for over a year (@sipwatchtravel) I finally got out of my "South Bay bubble" and came. What an incredible experience! From the service at the bar top to the fantastic drinks to the fabulous food. Everything was 5 stars! I highly recommend the Monday daily special for food and Mexicali and Smoke Show for cocktails.

Yelp
Loved this place, went with a friend and we sat at the bar which was very clean and not sticky like most bar tops. Bartenders were very knowledgeable about making proper cocktails, the food was amazing and hot when it came out. Will definitely be back if ever in the area. Thanks!
google avatar

Yelp
Great Margaritas!!! So delish and nothing artificial. Amazing servers. Food was healthy and well prepared.

Yelp
Not sure what they put in the guacamole at Sausal, but it just tastes creamier and fresher than it does anywhere else I've been. My go-tos (aside from said guacamole) are the Carne Asada, Chili Verde, and the Empanada appetizer. If you're tired of the same lunchtime salad rotation, Sausal has some nice bowls that are packed with protein and veggies. Crave-worthy. Managers Amy and Oz will take great care of you. Bartenders Renee, Fito, and Hortensia are really nice and they don't mind if you eat at the bar. Bon Appétit!

Yelp
My family and I have been coming here since they opened in 2015...needless to say, we love it! It can get a little crowded on weekends or the odd weekday, but we've always been seated right away (don't think we've ever gone without a reservation, though), served promptly and attended to hospitably. Even at its busiest, you're still able to hear yourself think and have a conversation, lol. They've got their whole ambiance pretty well dialed in. And for those who appreciate a restaurant's visual appeal, their blend of Spanish colonial/rustic hacienda ranch style with contemporary elements makes that same ambiance all-the-more appealing. Now, the most important component: THE FOOD... It is EXQUISITE! Every single appetizer, dish and dessert we've ever ordered has been absolutely stellar. Uniquely flavorful without requiring an especially adventurous palate. Also worth noting that my mom, who has been a lifelong Brussels sprout-hater, LOVES their caramelized Brussels sprouts...they're seriously out of this world! Good drinks plus a nice selection of wines, to boot. And, if I'm not mistaken, you can have an espresso or coffee to sip on with dessert (after dinner, that is, as I haven't been there for brunch...yet!) So, while it's a little pricy for my particular budget, Sausal has unequivocally been worth every cent. 10/10 recommend!

Yelp
I feel like the South Bay is saturated with upscale Mexican restaurants, but I'd say this is one of the better ones. I've been a couple times and both times the food was excellent. Tacos are reliably good and I also really enjoyed the charred corn elote. It's large, service was good, but it can be kind of loud.

Cassie K.

Yelp
This place is incredible! The service and food are absolutely amazing. Jose is the best--he made our experience unforgettable. The arroz con pollo is to die for; if I could eat it every day, I totally would. Highly recommend checking this spot out! You won't regret it.

Yelp
When you are from NY but live in MT and forget how much you miss fresh, authentic Mexican. My hubby lived in about 10 different places in Mexico over a 2 year period and always calls out places that are the real deal. This is one, he said the green sauce (salsa verde) took him back! We had the empanadas and the chips and guacamole. He had a hazy ipa and I had the signature margarita, both were great. We sat at the bar, server was attentive but not overbearing. Would return.

Great find in wlsegundo. Small plates delicious selection and all food was on point. Nice decor. I would think this is one of the best selections in the area which struggles to find great spots, this is one

Yelp
This review is a long time coming as Sausal is my place to go in Downtown El Segundo for Mexican food. Great lunch combo during the week, wonderful brunch, and a good happy hour. I've brought family and friends and they've always enjoyed it. Sometimes public street parking can be a hard to find but other than that, overall great pick!

Yelp
My new Go To restaurant. Love all the food as this like Gourmet Mexican food ...but still authentic with different twists to traditional plates. Staff is amazing.. always nice & great service. Atmosphere is super, near the beach in El Segundo & plenty of parking nearby.
