Portland, Oregon’s Best Mexican Restaurants and Food Carts | Eater Portland

"Hidden in the back of a Glisan convenience store, Sahuayo is a common stop for Providence Portland employees seeking breakfast burritos and the desperately hungover in search of menudo or albondigas. Weekend brunches are a particularly strong move here, especially for chilaquiles or a bowl of pozole. Be sure to ask for a stack of fresh corn tortillas, regardless of the order."

The Best Restaurants in Portland, Oregon’s North Tabor Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"Inside J & Ts Market on Northeast Glisan, shoppers can find all the convenience store staples: candy, cold beverages, chips… and some unconventional finds like birria-loaded tacos and stuffed burritos at this casual, convenience store taqueria. This small dine-in or takeout counter from Adrian Flores dishes up a full menu of Mexican and Michoacán eats like breakfast burritos crammed with homemade chorizo and tostadas heaped with shrimp ceviche. The birria is a stand-out, enjoyed in myriad forms from tacos to burritos. There are tables for indoor or outdoor seating, and be prepared for waits around lunchtime; the convenience store attracts plenty of foot traffic from the nearby medical center." - Zoe Baillargeon

Portland, Oregon’s Best Breakfast Restaurants | Eater Portland

"Inside the Glisan convenience store J&T’s Market, Adrian Flores tops cheeseburgers with bacon and eggs, piles plates with huevos rancheros, and ladles bowls of birria de chivo. On the weekends, menudo lands at picnic tables outside the store, sipped alongside horchata and, in some cases, energy drinks from the fridges inside. But for mid-week workers, the selection of breakfast burritos is a real draw, filled with everything from chorizo and potatoes to ham, sausage, and bacon." - Zoe Baillargeon

Weird place - a convenience store with a kitchen so the atmosphere is very unusual. That said, friendly service, smells delicious, generous seating area out front went etc. They don't seem to offer any real menus inside that I saw, instead just a simple sign listing all their different proteins. I ordered tacos, one birria and one green chili pork, only be told that I had to buy the green chili pork two at a time. Sort of bizarre but I switched to carnitas. I paid a buck extra for the homemade tortillas, so both tacos were pretty large. They offered three different salsas, a red, and orange and green. They weren't really hot to mild like I expected. Instead all three were medium spice, but very interesting unique flavor. I have to think they make them here. Overall, absolutely delicious, and I will be here again each time I have to bring my wife to a doctor's appointment at Providence just down the street. With a hurt ankle she can't drive, so her loss is my gain!

Google
This place is great. Their soups and fajitas are very good. I love that they have homemade tortillas. The staff is very friendly as well. Prices are also very reasonable. It's a great option if you work at or visit the hospital. I recommend it. The Chile relleno and enchiladas are great vegetarian options. Their chops are also delicious.

Google
The chorizo and the carnitas are absolutely incredible, and the fresh salsas and freshly made tortillas are very good as well! This place is worth going out of the way for!

Google
Solid burrito. Reminds me of food I’ve had in the CA Central Valley. Got the beef birria burrito and lots of flavorful tender chunks of beef. I will go back to try other menu items.

Google
I want ed this place to be amazing and overall the pastor meat was good but I got raw tortillas!!! Come on!!! At least cook the tortillas

Google
Incredibly good food. I Typically snag tacos or a burrito. Extremely kind staff. This used to be the closest convenience store to me that I visited hundreds of times and they made it into a wonderful taqueria inside the already legendary north tabor convenience store.

Google
I cannot even describe to you the beautiful convenience of a taqueria inside of a convenience store. Not only did we all love our food, but the atmosphere of being able to browse convenience store goods??? simply sublime. they even have little self-serve baggies of pickled carrots and hot sauce, which is usually an upcharge at most other places! the only reason that I would go to some chain restaurant like taco bell would be for the baja blast soda, but GUESS WHAT??? They have baja blast ON TAP!!! (and by on tap I mean in one of the fridges, but you're sniffin' what I'm scratchin') They even have abba-zabba, and the three flavors of Charleston chew (full size) on display for your dessert convenience! All in all, if there was one of these by my house, I would never buy groceries again.

Google
The best burritos I have ever had, come from this spot. It used to be called Sahuyao. They aren't expensive and taste great. Come here please.

Yelp
Boom. Wow. Fantastic. I'm a hard taco person in a soft taco world. I love that they break apart and you can have all that spilled goodness after the shell is gone. This place is money. I'd have taken a picture but what do you know I freaking ate it already. Affordably priced, not fancy, just damn good. I'm not even hungry and I'm thinking about another one. (I had the asada btw. Yum)

Yelp
The food is quite good which is why I keep giving this place a shot. That said, they really need to figure out their cook times. I ordered online and it was supposed to be ready between 12:20-12:30....at 1:10, I finally got my food. This is NOT THE FIRST TIME that this has happened either. You never know if you'll get timely services or watch as people who walk in and order, get their food before you. It's beyond frustrating. "Sorry, we didn't put your order in, we'll do it right now" and then making you wait 50 minutes for some burritos? Naw, the food is good but it's NOT a "50-minute-wait" good. Unfortunately this is the last time I give this place a chance. Hopefully they eventually learn how to get orders out in a timely fashion. Hire some more help, get a better system in place, do something....or don't....I won't be back.

Yelp
Just my style. Grocery store taqueria. Thought there was only going to be 1 picnic bench inside to eat at but there's 5. Tables were full but we grab a double. Most of the orders weee to go so there was a steady line. Like being able to purchase my own drink of choice with the meal. Good lunch and would recommend

Yelp
Found this place recommended on Eater PDX. Did enough reading up to have an idea of what to expect, but my expectations were pleasantly exceeded. On this Saturday, they were offering Menudo, and having never tried it, jumped at the opportunity. It was amazing. I also noticed that I was not the only customer who ordered it. My partner had the chilaquiles, and they were equally as good. One thing I noticed was a steady stream of customers, many getting takeout, but it is clear they have a loyal following. I also appreciated the customer service. They were pleasant and kind. This is a solid place to go for a good meal and while the setting may throw you off, don't let it detract

Yelp
I love this place! Sahuayo Taqueria is right in my neighborhood and I come here all the time. I mostly get the al pastor burrito which is great, but the other meats including birria are all awesome as well. I've had their rice and beans which are always good, and they have a nice selection of salsas to go with your food (green, red, habanero, and maybe one more). Grab some free pickled veggies too if they have them! The hospital is right around the corner, so it can get a little busy around the lunch and dinner hours. The staff is always really nice. It's inside a market, so you can grab a drink or anything else while you're waiting for your food. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Wow. Fantastic! Might be the best Huevos Ranchero I ever had. (But I still remember a truck stop in Albuquerque's version from over forty years ago with great fondness). My wife's chicken poodle (pozole, pozole...no poodles were harmed here) was also great and the quantity was as great as the taste. Service? It is in a little market but the service was good, the people are friendly...and did I mention the food is great?! Ambience? Note the location. You are experiencing great food in little market. Three tables inside and more outside in the shade.
google avatar

Kate O.

Yelp
Another great visit. This time, of course got the same Albondigas (meatball veggie soup) and a chicken tamale, and handmade corn tortillas, no extra charge! And looks like they've expanded the outdoor dining area. nice!
google avatar

Yelp
My first trip here and I was very impressed and can't wait to return to try more items. I tried the Al Pastor tacos and it was instantly my favorite menu choice, the spices were nice and pork had a nice char and sweetness. It was at times a little fatty but that's to be expected. I also tried the Chile Verde, this was good, second to a place on NE 42nd I go to often for this dish specifically. I also had Ceviche, which was simple, fresh and very satisfying. All & All, I am a fan and will be back to try the breakfast burritos and other items for sure. The only side eye, if you will, was the salsas .. I believe they are not home made but brand named (red sauce tasted like valentina brand) which I happened to like, so no biggy .

Yelp
This is a deli/super mart in 1. Their tacos are below average but the breakfast burritos are very tasty! Th le perfect amount of char on the tortilla with a delicious greasy taste. Can't say it's for the health conscious individuals, but it's definitely okay for me once in a while. It's a pretty decent sized burrito for under $10. Don't come here for the tacos, come for the breakfast burrito. The store itself is pretty basic.

Jim M.

Yelp
Our go-to place when we don't feel like cooking. Really satisfying food that is exactly what you think it will be. Get the homemade tortillas if you get tacos; totally worth the extra $1.00. The tacos are super filling; after 2 I'm full but I always eat the third anyway. You can grab a beer to drink there which is a bonus.

Yelp
I usually call this place ahead to place a pick up order. They've been accurate with the timing so far. I've had the menudo, pozole and torta with asada. Everything is delicious, the menudo was cooked perfectly. They have gone above and beyond with their service, adding spices if I want to make my caldo spicier. I love this place, convenient and friendly.
google avatar

Audra B.

Yelp
Yummy little spot inside a random mini mart. I wish there were better salsa options, but the food made was fresh and tasty!
google avatar

Steve F.

Yelp
Talk about a hidden gem. Best tacos I've had in Portland. Found out about it a few weeks back and have already gone 5 times. The breakfast burritos are also really good. They don't mess around with their hot sauces. The dark red one is made from Chile de Arbol Tostado and packs a nice punch. The service is great too. 5/5
google avatar

Bryan Y.

Yelp
only had their breakfast burrito, the one with bacon. it's huge and greasy and yummy. but it's not crazy delicious or anything like that. it's good and they are open before 10 so that's what puts them above the rest. a lot of these hipster carts and breakfast burrito joints don't open till like 10 or later! like what's the point of that. so it is a breath of fresh air to get breakfast at breakfast time (especially if hungover or just need that morning pick-me-up in SE and can't wait until 11). they have a whole bunch of other stuff here, that i should try before i can just keep this 3 star rating. their hamburger and chilaquiles look promising. need to try those next time.
google avatar

Jessie S.

Yelp
Favorite Al Pastor burrito in the city!!! We're always excited to pick up burritos here and look forward to trying some other things.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing food!!! Loved the dish with duck...so tasty:) The service was on point. Asked if they could make it mild and had no problem with my request
google avatar

Evey I.

Yelp
It is a taqueria in a market. The prices are reasonable, the taco salad and burritos are quite good and plentiful.
google avatar

Katherine N.

Yelp
Stopped by on our way to Washington from California. The place is quick and convenient located inside a liquor store with indoor/outdoor seating. The chicken fajitas burrito was great and so were the Al pastor tacos. I would not recommend getting the carne asada tacos. They had no flavor. Overall a decent place to grab a quick bite.
google avatar

Matthew B.

Yelp
First time trying this place after seeing the reviews. Small market with the restaurant. We ordered the carnitas burrito, asada burrito and goat taco. I rarely see goat on a menu so it was a must try. First off, the woman at the counter who helped us was great. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time and we took it home. Both the carnitas and asada burrito were pretty big. The meat in both was good and seasoned well. The ratio of meat to rice was a little skimpy but oh well. The goat taco was pretty good and had a subtle spiciness to it. Overall, this taqueria was pretty good. If I lived in the neighborhood it would probably be on my rotation of places to get Mexican food especially because they have meats that normally seen.

Yelp
I am ripping through their menu. Authentic Mexican food in inner NE Portland. The passionate owner is very customer service oriented, the kind of person you root for. I make a habit of asking Mexican food places about their specialities and here it's birrria (goat), carnitas, and one of Portland's best chillaquilles. Unfortunately, the Chile Relleno and tamale were just average. The Huevos Rancheros were decent, but they place the eggs and sauce on the tortillas resulting in a soggy mess. The rice was a little better while the refried beans a touch too watery. I was so-so on the Chavindeca, but I'm not a big fan of quesadillas. Conversely, the breakfast burritos and HUGE tortas were much better than average. In regard to tacos, the three standouts are carnitas, crunchy fish, and shrimp (oh, that sauce.) Opt for the homemade and larger tortillas, costs a little extra, but worth it. And I went off script and ordered the Entomatadas which includes egg, so it makes for a wonderful, non-hearty breakfast option. The two gals who regularly work there are awesome. I've seen them take the high road with some difficult customers. And one of managers is very nice. There's some inside seating and outside patio tables when the weather turns nice.

Yelp
We love finding hidden gems and Yelp is a great way to find them. This place is one of them. We saw good reviews for them and wanted to try them out for lunch. We had a breakfast burrito, which was outstanding. And, we were pleased to see that they serve stewed goat meat, Birria style, which we also found to be very good. Carnitas was tender, crispy around the edges, but not dry. Carne Asada and Pollo Asado tacos also both good. The service was fast, the people were friendly, the food was tasty and the prices were reasonable. Convenient parking in their lot and in the street in front. This was a nice dining experience.
google avatar

Cheryl N.

Yelp
I enjoyed the food here from the breakfast tacos to the nachos, to the homemade corn tortillas. What makes this place special are the little touches and the great staff. Super friendly and chill. My taco fell on the floor and they gave me a new one even though it was not their fault. Super generous of them. I agree with others, seems like a good local spot, they seem to remember you when you come back.
google avatar

Dylan S.

Yelp
Honestly, this spot IS IT. The hand made tortillas are for sure a game changer. The meat is well seasoned but it was extremely salty for me. Service was pretty good and quick. Since it's in a convenient store, it was very chill environment. Definitely will come back.

Tram N.

Yelp
Very expensive tacos. Okay taste. My husband got a really bad food poisoning here after eating the carne asada burrito. We won't be returning.
google avatar

Kyle P.

Yelp
Solid neighborhood joint located inside a convenience store, bodega style. The menu is comprehensive, and everything is pretty solid. I've had the birria, enchiladas, burrito, wet burrito, torta, and tacos. Portions are large and the prices are reasonable. I think the tacos are where they really shine, especially the asada and carnitas. I'm normally not a big carne asada fan but it's juicy and delicious here, plus the asada tacos come with guac on them! Looking forward to continue eating my way through the menu. Friendly staff who actually called me back when my order came out much earlier than the time they originally quoted me. Thanks! If you live in the North Tabor area, make this your go-to Mexican stop.
google avatar

Aaron M.

Yelp
So sorry I have no photos. Sahuayo Taqueria has fast become my absolute favorite Taqueria in inner NE PDX. I went with the carne asada street tacos this time and was beyond pleased. The meat is excellently prepared and so delicious. I've not experienced any gristle either. Three tacos fills me up with no problem. And, the service is tip-top. So courteous and friendly. Great job!
google avatar

Josh B.

Yelp
Unless you're in the neighborhood, few people know about it, but they have the best burrito in town. The Carnitas... ridiculously good. Everything's amazing.
google avatar

Casey B.

Yelp
Thinking about trying this place out..... DO IT! I walked in to the market and was greeted by the smell of Fabuloso and the smiling cashier! Hello Mexico! There are bright colored picnic tables inside and out which just added to the charm. I thought long and hard and ordered chilaquiles and two birria tacos. All for myself. Why not? Oh and the prices? CHEAP!!!!!!! I asked for hot sauce and the cashier explained she usually had more options than the red and green, but they were out. Both sauces were amazing, so it was all good. My chilaquiles were almost perfect, the sauce flavorful, eggs over medium, fresh avocado and crisp chips. The queso and crema were just right and the nice touch of onions in the sauce stood out. Once thing that I will ask for that I think should be included, fresh cilantro and onions on top. Next time I will ask. Now, the tacos...... Holy heck! So freaking good. Double tortilla, fresh beef birria and loads of cilantro and onions. OMG, perfect. Can't wait to get fat going here too often.

Kevin M.

Yelp
Just look at this consommé chilled next day, semi solid just full of collagen. Fantastic deal for legit delicious bone broth! Get the birria goat tacos, consommé, and the ceviche. Best in the city!

Holly D.

Yelp
Love this place, great taco salads, burritos, etc, plus it's hilarious to eat at a picnic table inside a convenience store -- you can buy food from the restaurant and drinks, dessert, whatever, from the store. A unique experience!
google avatar

Mike R.

Yelp
Was looking forward to this "hidden gem." It wasn't quite the hidden gym I was hoping it would be. I had 5 different tacos. The chorizo and pastor were the most flavorful. The carnitas and carne asada weren't as flavorful as I hoped. The carne asada fajita taco was a little too much and messy. It's the only taco I couldn't pick up and had to eat with a fork. Might go back again but would go for a burrito over tacos.
google avatar

Maribel A.

Yelp
This place absolutely deserves a 5 star rating! The hand made tortillas were amazing for the tacos and the workers were all super friendly too:) Wasn't expecting the place to be connected to a market but it worked out! I got extra snacks/ drinks while I waited and was not disappointed by the taste. They had 3 different salsas and they were all SO GOOD 10/10 recommend
google avatar

Monique F.

Yelp
4.5/5 not bad! I called & ordered a breakfast burrito with lengua but they didn't hear me clearly & I got a lengua burrito instead, not the worst misunderstanding but not what I was craving. I did like how fresh the lengua & rice tasted so much that I decided to go back for tacos. My Birria de res was a bit dry & missing flavor but they did load up the taco with meat + the handmade tacos didn't hold up by the time I got home to eat them they got soggy :( Wish they wore masks while cooking the food
google avatar

Marina P.

Yelp
Quick service. The best breakfast burritos around this are. Piping hot, yummy salsa, huge, and flavorful. Defiantly crave this weekly.
google avatar

Ryan H.

Yelp
We went to Sahuayo for a work lunch, and they delivered big time. So much delicious food, exactly what we requested and such great service. The food - asada, carnitas, and veggie tacos, with Tres Leches for desert were all top notch with spicy salsa and delicious beans and rice. The flavors were all very good! Everyone in the group loved it and the locals are fans too and will probably return. I know we'll use Sahuayo for a "catered" lunch again next time. Thank you!!!
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
This place is a solid choice. The salsa and tres leches cake are the highlight of my order. But tacos are good, the meat was flavorful. I'd pass on the tamales though... good portion but not a lot of flavor. Still gonna come back though since prices are great!

karla t.

Yelp
They got my order wrong. I ordered a pastor torta and they gave me a carne asada torta. Plus my torta bread was burnt.
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
Hit or miss, I've been here a few times, as it's near where I work, and I've gone on my lunch break or hit this place up on my drive home from work. I've gotten the crunchy tacos and the breakfast burrito. The cashier that takes your order, I've had a couple of different ones, they were both very friendly, and one offered me their habanero salsa, which was delicious. I like both the red and the habanero. I've gotten the breakfast burrito in the morning, afternoon and evening, and sometimes it's extra greasy, where it tastes like the eggs were made in bacon grease, but sometimes, it's excellent. Love me a crunchy taco, if you like crunchy tacos, this is a place to get 'em.
google avatar

Carley M.

Yelp
Insane breakfast burritos!! Loved the beans and onions inside and the green salsa it comes with is solid
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
The pastor in my Pork tacos was up there with the best I have ever tasted. Excellent food for a small market with a small kitchen. Very authentic, exactly what I want when looking for street tacos. I will be back to try more. My son loved the extra asada burrito I bought.
google avatar

Andrew N.

Yelp
My wife was in an appointment at a place next door so I stopped by to see if they had breakfast. It was my lucky day because my breakfast burrito was fantastic! I don't live in this area, but I know that I need to come back and try their homemade tortillas and other food. This place is very small, It actually seems like a convenience store than a restaurant, although it seems like everyone was coming in for the taqueria. I love finding these unassuming places that serve killer food. Highly recommend.

Michelle J.

Yelp
Delicious tacos, friendly staff & shady outdoor seating. Sometimes a bit of a wait, but it's worth it.
google avatar

Jina M.

Yelp
This hidden gem is inside J&T market. The BEST Mexican food I've had in the states...and I grew up in California. Tacos (all of them are SO GOOD!!!) Birria Ceviche (made to order so call it in 30 min before pickup) Menudo You really can't go wrong. Please check this place out!!!!! So legit. Do not miss out.
google avatar

Tomas O.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. The burritos are huge and tasty! Their green chili is fire. And because it's a convenient store you have a great selection of drinks and snacks to grab and go.
google avatar

Lisa D.

Yelp
This neighborhood store taqueria is an absolute delight! The food is incredible and the owners are super nice. Our favorite spot for breakfast burritos (the combo!!), tacos, and birria. And sometimes even a churro for a neighborhood walkabout. We're so happy this place exists.
google avatar

Andy H.

Yelp
No. No no no. What exactly is Mexican about French fries, beans and rice on breakfast tacos??? Top that with cheddar cheese? Have you been to Mexico?

Antonia R.

Yelp
Unfortunately won't be returning. The service wasn't great we were ignore the first 5 minutes we entered even though no one was there. The taco meat was very dry and I asked for no cilantro and received tons of cilantro which was disappointing.
google avatar

Jer G.

Yelp
Delicious fresh options abound. I love the tacos and namesake burrito special; Plus the Tres Leches Cake is unbelievable. . . seriously creamy sponge cake style, swimming a lite sweet milk, in the true manner of the lazy Dutch Wooly! Do NOT miss it!

Carol A.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Cozy and quaint. Fresh corn tortillas! I am now a regular!
