Where to Drink Pacific Northwestern Hard Cider in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Only fruit grown within 200 miles of Schilling’s Auburn, Washington production facility makes it into their fresh-pressed juice blend for cider making. In addition to flagships like the London Dry, the taproom pours all of Schilling’s seasonals — including fall favorite Chaider and crushable summer sipper Big Zesty — year-round. The cider house also has a dedicated gluten-free kitchen, which serves hand-dipped corn dogs and loaded tots. Trivia is hosted every Wednesday night; it’s best to arrive early to grab a spot." - Janey Wong

Google
Over 30 ciders on tap! Unbelievably amazing. Staff was nice. Unfortunately parking was very limited and a bit of a pain. Got a pulled pork sandwich, was pretty tasty.

Carolyn Riesinger

Google
Phenomenal selection of ciders and the cider cocktails are unique and delicious! The food is a gluten free gals dream (although to you wouldn’t know it was gf). I especially loved the fried chickpeas and classic corn dog. Great vibes all around!

James Schick

Google
This sequel location is easily equal, if not superior, to the original location. Amazing cider list on tap, plus a to-go cooler stocked with a curated selection from cider makers - No Angry Orchard, Cider Boys, or Woodchuck to be found, thankfully! The staff is friendly and informative. Plus, there is plenty of fairly easy-to-find parking in the neighborhood. Pricing for food and drinks (for the most part) is entirely reasonable for the area. As one of the top three-four cider brands in Portland currently, it is easily worth the first AND second visits!

Google
- fully gluten-free kitchen and ciders (hooray, as a Celiac!) - delicious hamburger and fries (esp. the fries with cheese) - tasty cider with *many* options - actually too many options for cider, it's overwhelming, but they have handy three suggested flights to help - super friendly people that work there (unlike a few yrs ago, honestly) - have an assortment of games. I played Uno for the first time in years - nice outdoor tables, so I could bring my two dogs. - in a dope neighborhood with tons of other restaurants, stores, bars etc. nearby. safe and clean neighborhood I like a lot. thanks, please keep this place gluten-free and I will come frequently!

Google
This new location is great. We had a pint and the charcuterie board. Great place to hang out.

Google
Wow. What an amazing spot. GF heaven. Fried chicken sandwich was bomb. 💣🔥 Service was great! Kid/minor friendly - FINALLY! ☺️ 10/10

Chris Cox

Google
Amazing spot for cider and gluten-free food. Huge list of ciders from all over. The Schilling Anniversary Pommeau is excellent. Kitchen is all GF so it is safe to eat and drink anything on the menu if you have gluten issues. I haven't had a corn dog in a long while so it was definitely a treat to eat. Hush puppies were even better and super fresh. It is mostly bar-type food, but being that I usually have to avoid that kind of food, it was nice to be able to enjoy the selection without worry. Patio has some great views of the city. Staff is friendly and accommodating. The biggest drawback for families is that this is 21+ only. Not a drawback if you don't want to be around kids though! Can't wait to go back. Gluten friendly: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Atmosphere: 5/5

Google
This place has a fantastic space and a huge selection of ciders. They do offer a completely gluten free menu. However the food wasn't as good as I hoped. The chicken was a bit funky and the corn dog was a bit undercooked so there was raw coating. Great fries and a diverse enough menu that we'll go back and try some different things.

Yelp
Their food and ambiance are great but if you are going somewhere and hoping for nice respectful service you won't find it. Three times I have been and found really rude employees.

Yelp
I cannot get over this place. It is always my go to to bring friends and family visiting Portland because it is such a hub for great vibes and an all around guaranteed good time. The cider is always fantastic and I love that I can get a flight to sample several at once. Let's talk about the food now, the fact that this place carries Louisiana rub BONELESS wings is what keeps me coming back. I am obsessed with this because prior to a gluten allergy, it was always my go to at wingstop. Trivia on Wednesdays is always fun and the guy host is hilarious, I love the nights that he shows up and really shows out for us as the MC. I haven't been there for a comedy night, but I'm sure it is just as good as all the other events this place hosts.

Yelp
As I usually like to disclose before most reviews of bars that I write: I dislike alcohol, cider, beer, and wine. Not for any reason other than the fact that I generally find that it tastes like battery acid. This is not to be confused with a general dislike of drinking, however: that, I excel at (in moderation, obviously). What that means for how I conduct my life is that I generally expect to hate every non-fruity cocktail that goes down my gullet, and typically grimace in preparation. However, that was not the case with Schilling Cider House. I got a cider flight and tried an array of the sweet and semi-sweet ciders. All were delicious. I really appreciated that they differentiate between sweet/dry! We also ordered the fully-loaded tots, which were good but not great. Overall, this is a great spot for those looking to try more ciders, as well as those who need gluten-free options!

Yelp
Amazing selection of house made ciders and so many more from other cider houses to also try and choose from. A outside patio is also a nice place to chill out and enjoy a drink with friends. They have some good food options as well so bring an appetite and a craving for some good cider and enjoy this great place.

Yelp
Had Schilling Cider once again, Steve and myself. We tried this Portland location and liked it quite a bit! We had the Excelsior cider with this particular experience. I believe this is one of their flagship ciders as I have seen the logo around quite a bit. Flavors to look for is tart, apple, sour and some dryness. The cider is also very smooth and it gives a very good mouthfeel because of that.

Yelp
I'm so glad that a college friend recommended that we check out Schilling! First off, the service is amazing! The person who helped us was so kind, patient, and helpful regarding navigating the ciders. I wasn't sure what I wanted, but I knew that I wanted to stick to drier ciders, and they recommended two. I went with the mango one, and my mom, the more citrus one. Both were absolutely delicious! Refreshing with just hints of sweetness that made you want to drink another, knowing you just needed one. We stuck to one, but when we return to this area, we may get more than one. This is true for the taste and the price as two pints with their Sunday happy hour was just $14 with the tip! Also, we loved that they had an indoor and outdoor space. Today was so beautiful, so it was great to take in the outdoor sun and cool wind. Once we wanted to go inside, there was tons of seating, which made it easy to stay. This will be on my list when I return to the area!

Yelp
You always know a good cider event when you spot Schilling at a booth! Guava lemonade and the Spiced Chaider are two that surprised me the most by being some of the best cider I've ever tasted! Plus they definitely know how to bring the party and draw a crowd with their slushie machines!
google avatar

Yelp
I almost forgot they are right next to the market of choice! I like that they color-coded ciders from dry to sweet, so you can choose based on your preference. Service is fine, you go up to the counter if you want more drinks, and nobody is walking around and checking in with you every 5 minutes. I had a good cup of tomato soup and a flight of cider of my choice. A little chilly inside, bit they have a nice firepit outside deck. Recommend the flight, and find out what you like.
google avatar

Christopher P.

Yelp
We had family visiting us and they are big into cider so this was our first stop due to the large amount of ciders on tap. We were pleased to find that it's a very welcoming space with nice indoor/outdoor seating. We got some fries and nachos to snack on but we were mainly there for the flights. Very friendly staff. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
I often travel to Portland, Schillings Cider House is a required stop each time. This space just radiates fun and warmth, and the staff is nothing short of amazing. Each time I stop by, I always do a flight of ciders-their lineup is out of this world. This is also a gluten-free friendly food spot in town, so I was in heaven. Prices are reasonable, service is speedy and help is plentiful. They have lots of fun games to play as you sip on some ciders. I highly recommend everyone check out Shillings.

Yelp
This is upstairs from Chipotle and across from Market of Choice. Parking is street parking and there is a parking garage within walking distance. The drink menu is extensive and might be overwhelming but don't fret they allow tastings. I had the fall flight and the chicken tacos. The flight was delicious and full of fun flavors. The chicken tacos were meh. They weren't very big and aside from whatever made them spicy the flavor profile was simple. They have heated outdoor seating and indoor seating for those cold PNW winter days.

Yelp
Wow. The cider itself was maybe three stars but the service was terrible. Immediately when we entered it felt hostile. We came on a Fri at 5:45. Right when we walked in we were asked if we were there for the comedy show. We said we weren't. They said they were prioritizing letting anyone in that wasn't there for the comedy show... At 7. And it was empty. We asked if we could just get a drink and promised to leave by 7. This was met with a super grudging ok. Even when I was asking for recommendations on ciders I was given attitude. Just overall left a really bad taste when I was so excited to try the cider.

Yelp
Friendly, open atmosphere with delicious concoctions and foods. The Brussel sprouts with the vegan artichoke aoli was phenomenal while the fries were perfectly salted and crisp. Highly recommend! I had the apple pie hard cider and my girlfriend had the moonberries.
google avatar

Aaron S.

Yelp
100% a cider house. It's definitely worth the stop. 50 different ciders on tap. I got the 101 black dog which is 6.5% abv apple, black orange, and activated charcoal.

Josh U.

Yelp
Great selection of ciders. Haven't found a better cider house that I like. The drag bingo every 2nd and 4th Thursdays from 7-9pm are a fun weekday outing with a couple drinks and friends.
google avatar

Ally G.

Yelp
A wide selection of ciders with unique flavors - definitely something for everyone! Cozy brewery atmosphere. We went late at night, and even their limited menu had everything we wanted. Food came out quickly and was delicious. Bartenders were kind and had great recommendations for ciders and other things to do in the area.

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times now. If you are into ciders, this is THE place. It's also in a great part of town, so you can do other things then come here or vise versa. The covered outside seating makes great whether it's training or sunny. I like to sit and watch the cars drive by and people walking! If you're lucky you'll catch the sunset on the skyline. There is a table with a fire which is nice for evenings but when we went recently it was broken :/. Hopefully they fix it soon. Flights are fun to do here you get to fill out a card and choose from 2 pages of ciders then they give you your flight :) They have inside seating too. The food is good here I belive it's vegan based I've tried the corn dog and fries and Brussels sprouts, yum! If you go here during fall season, get the CHIDER. All time favorite, but it's seasonal. staff is friendly, and I believe they offer comedy nights and trivia nights!
google avatar

Rick I.

Yelp
Too many ciders, but I'm not complaining. This is Kim's go-to spot for cider, she enjoys the variety and quality of the drinks.
google avatar

Mike F.

Yelp
I like Shilling cider it is one of my favorite brands. We have been here a few times and really enjoy the balcony area. The ciders include guest taps which I appreciate to be able to have other brands. Doing the flights are always fun for me to get several choices without having to be carried away They have a gluten free menu which is cool, I have tried most of the items but am not always pleased with the flavors. I would really appreciate some items that are either not gluten free or naturally gluten free to give some additional choices. The atmosphere is fun, people having a good time the last time here with a trivia contest. It was pretty packed and fun.
google avatar

Alex W.

Yelp
Some good happy hour food (especially the tacos). Ciders are tasty as well and pack a good ABV punch. Love the outdoor area. Idk how often I'll drink cider but seeing as this is right by my apartment I may pop over here to work every so often.
google avatar

Yelp
Great view and a nice experience on the deck. The tasting tray of ciders was delicious, fries were very stuffed delicious.

Yelp
Schilling's is a great place because it's all gluten free. Menu and ciders alike. My partner and I stopped here (she's been before, many times) while on one of our excursions. As she's Celiac's, any place that allows no gluten through the doors is the best thing she can find. We went with flights, this time, and chose from a huge selection of ciders. This is obviously their thing and they do it very well. We had a great time, tasting each other's selections and discovering new things. Both of us agreed that the ciders which leaned in on spicy, such as a habanero cider, were our favourites. Less pleasant for us were the very sweet ones; I didn't particularly care for a peach one, but these are all preferences. The quality was quite high. The only slightly disappointing thing was that my partner told me they had a larger selection of food available, but when we went, it was pretty much down to tater tots and corn dogs. I got a corn dog and we both got tots. They were good and the sausage itself in the corn dog was spicy and flavorful, so it was nice. But we had hoped to have more of a meal here and that didn't really happen. Looking at the online menu, it appears they serve street tacos and grilled cheese, but I honestly don't recall those being there at the time, as my partner loves street tacos and usually would order them. So perhaps things have changed or maybe we just hit it on a bad day. Regardless, we'll be back. It's fun and safe and it's great to have a lot of choices.

Yelp
Great ciders and no issues with sulfates. The Bigfoot one holding boom box is my favorite and I first tried it to salute my dad's first night in heaven while in Bend. Keep making great flavors
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
Delightful cider. I tried a flight of the schilling ciders and liked all of them, though the moon berry was my favorite because it was the most complex. The bartender was a bit man-splain-y about ciders, but I'm sure they get a lot of people that don't much hard cider and want some explanation. The patio was pretty nice, but a bit small.
google avatar

Jenni B.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place over the weekend. I had no idea their kitchen was dedicated gluten free and I'm pretty impressed by that. I was able to order a delicious vegetarian corn dog that is also gluten free and their French fries are delicious. The cider selection is great and the person working the counter offered some really good suggestions based on what I explained I like. The Brussels sprouts are also really delicious! All our food was very fresh and hot. Minus one star because it was slow getting our food but I will definitely return and highly recommend to gluten free friends!
google avatar

Sharlena T.

Yelp
This place is a gem! Highly recommend if ur looking for some fun at night esp since it closes later than most places Got the best sellers flight & fruit flight. Out of both flights the ones we liked were schilling excelsior mango, tumalo nectarine, stephens sweet, avid pear apple, schilling black currant! Would highly recommend especially the mango. Was unique, strong in mango, and really light! The double mountain rose felt sharp kind of like a wine. Jungle juice and peach tea were our least faves personally. The rest were ok/ light in flavor Overall such a nice vibe and place to hang w friends. The staff were super nice and would come back again!
google avatar

Nusheen B.

Yelp
It's a bummer I won't be returning here, because I like just a block away. Every time I am there the bartender's have an attitude of: "What do you want?', not, 'How can I help you?" It's giving, hostage situation vibes, which confuses me, because you are getting paid to work here, right? Anyway. I hope they hire some friendly, welcoming, and accommodating staff soon.

Yelp
I was visiting Portland with a friend and I was really excited to visit here. I didn't realize how many Cider houses there were in Portland, which was super exciting to me since I eat mostly gluten free. This was the first one we checked out and it was my absolute favorite. The staff there were super friendly and helpful. The decor is really cute and clean and we hung out there for a few hours before heading off to other plans. I also loved that they had boardgames available, we played a few rounds of Uno and Guess Who. There was also a really cute outdoor area but we chose to stay inside since we had been out in the sun a lot already. The cider options were AMAZING. So many cool options and we both did a tasting flight. I loved getting to try different types of ciders that were local to Oregon. I also was excited to see the Gluten Free Kitchen. I got a vegetarian corn dog and it was honestly so exciting because I haven't been able to have a corn dog since I was a child. I highly recommend this location and will definitely visit again when I'm in Portland next.
google avatar

Yelp
Chill ambiance! Very affordable drinks! & the merchandise was so cute. Would definitely come back again!
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Great place! The entire food menu is gluten free. My husband and I got the corn dog and tater tots and they were great!
google avatar

Keizzel C.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try Shilling for a while now so it was the perfect opportunity to come on one of the sunny days to escape the rain. They have a nice but fairly small indoor space, but they expand their space with a cute outdoor space that overlooks the area. They have a pretty expansive menu with their house ciders and other american craft ciders. I ended up trying the Imperial Peach Tea which was a rich cider with an unexpected abv %. I only got a glass but our friends got a flight and that seems like the way to go if you're visiting here so you can get a good sample of their house/other ciders. I loved the variety they had on the menu and can't wait to come back to try their other flavors. I didn't get to try the food this time around but other Yelp reviews are raving about it so I will for sure need to check it out the next visit.

Anthony D.

Yelp
It was pretty good, had this apple pie cider with the season being here and all. Nice ambiance, we sat outside by the fire table and were comfortable. Had these brussel sprouts and the tomato soup for a quick bite. Only reason I didn't give 5 star is because the staff was very monotone and not very welcoming when ordering but we got through it.

Dana K.

Yelp
Have been wanting to go here for a long time. Sat outside and enjoyed a flight of ciders. They obviously have a great selection and the bartenders were great. Didn't try food this time but will back soon.
google avatar

Stephanie J.

Yelp
If you are wanting cider, this is a good spot to check out. My husband and I both had a cider flight which is a must. They have so many on tap, even a few of their own. I recommend enjoying your cider on the patio, it's a nice view. Cheers!
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
This has been my go to spot for ciders in Portland. I highly recommend grapefruit and chill, taste like soda! It could get dangerous though since it's so tasty.
google avatar

Kim D.

Yelp
I love a good cider and we were fortunate enough to come across Schilling Cider House while looking through the bar options near downtown Portland. It did require a Lyft ride from our hotel downtown, but they do offer a wide assortment of ciders to choose from (around 50 or so), so it was definitely worth it. We all did the flight (which seemed to be a popular option at $14 for 6 different ciders) and I loved almost every cider I tried. They sort it by sweetness, so you can choose accordingly based on your preference, but I went most of the sweet/semi-sweet options. My favorites would have to be the watermelon rhubarb and the rose vacay, but most of the other berry flavored ones I tried were also pretty good as well. They do have some food in case you're hungry (or trying to sober up) and games to play while you're drinking! We did Cards Against Humanity and had a blast while tasting away.
google avatar

Daniela R.

Yelp
Great ciders.......Rude staff. I understand that my fiancé and I look young but there is a correct way for asking for ID. Honestly thought this place closed at 11 which is the reason I came at 9:30
google avatar

Sam K.

Yelp
Definitely a chill place to hangout with a group, a lunch date, or even just your work laptop. The fireplace seating in the outdoor area is the perfect touch for those cooler evenings and the food is delish (the salsa that comes with the chicken quesadilla OMG) and the flight combinations are infinite. Sam approved
google avatar

Yelp
Would not allow us in with 6 week old baby. ?? Guess there have been lots of folks sneaking booze to babies. Shame I won't be back to try their food or give $ to a local business...
google avatar

Tasha H.

Yelp
What an awesome spot for cider lovers, and non cider lovers - get ready to be converted. With 50, yes FIFTY, ciders on tap, there is something here for everyone. they color code the ciders by dry-sweet, which really helps you choose what you are looking for. I highly recommend getting the flight to sample several of their offerings! From fruity, to traditional, to bizarre, they will have a variety for you. We sat outside on a nice day and enjoyed the warmth from the fire - also got to see them processing lots of apples for cider! We also got some loaded tots to share and they did not disappoint. Tons of tasty toppings on perfect tots - super crisp on on the outside and nice and soft on the inside.
google avatar

Yelp
First off, the food was fantastic. I know...what's so special about a corn dog at a bar? As a Celiac how often do you get gluten free corn dogs? And these aren't just any corn dog. They taste amazing. Crispy corn batter on the outside. Fluffy and soft on the inside. With an incredible house mustard that has a slight horseradish kick. Atmosphere was great. Attention to safety but not in an annoying way. Helpful and knowledgeable staff. Good energy and lighting. For the gluten free peeps: My experience was GF all the way. I can't guarantee your experience but I am celiac and had the corn dog and tots and did not experience any gluten symptoms. I have pretty bad reactions to even a small amount of gluten and I didn't have any reaction to my dinner here. 5/5 recommend

Yelp
Love love love this cider house!! Such a wide variety, which keeps things interesting and maybe spicyyy depending on which flavors you get. (The Jalapeno/lime/cilantro cider from Elemental [WA] was pretty interesting and good!) My favorite was Schilling's Pineapple Passion, followed closely by the Strawberry Spruce from Wildcraft. The pineapple passion is on the sweeter side- tastes like juice! I like the Strawberry Spruce because I get the flavors from the strawberry with a nice light dry finish. Other ciders I've tried included the Schilling Grapefruit (pretty good), Lemon Lavender from Seattle (interesting combination, would probably not get again, tasted the lemon first and the lavender at the end), Watermelon Pear from Pear Up [WA] (okay, interesting, not mindblowing), and Peach Thyme from Runcible [OR] (not my glass of cider, combination a bit off, weak flavors). Lots of seating and a nice patio- perfect for casual hangouts!
google avatar

Yelp
Schilling Cider House has an amazing array of in-house and guest ciders, and amazing patio. Their menu is nicely descriptive and they offer flights of six, (see what they did there, Tired Hands Philadelphia, who won't do flights?). For flights, grab a pencil and paper and write the number and name of your cider. You'll want the latter for when they hand the flight to you, as you'll have nothing else to remind you of what you ordered. I liked the Schilling ciders, and was happy to try some guest taps, as well. The patio was packed, so we sat inside and enjoyed talking with the people next to us. What dings this place immensely, is the generic 1995-era electronic Muzak that they play, instead of perhaps paying for Pandora licensing. If you're trying to create a vibe, you've got to go the extra mile and pay licensing for better music. I would still recommend coming in for a flight and definitely trying to hang on their patio!

Jenn F.

Yelp
Amazing cider selection. Great fries and nachos. Outdoor seating is really nice. Dedicated Gluten free.
google avatar

Maggie L.

Yelp
50 different ciders daily??? Yess!! I'm not the biggest fan of alcohol, but I do enjoy some occasional tasting of beer and cider in a flight. For $12 you can choose 6 different ciders from any of the 50 listed on the big blackboard behind the bar; these ciders are catogorized by sweetness from dry to sweet and color-coded to help customer choose according to preference. Grab a card and write down your 6 choice before going to the cashier to pay. My favorite was #3 Pineapple Passion from Schilling (sweet and refreshing) and #7 Chaider from Schilling (tasted like a strong Chai tea), and my boyfriend liked #50 Peach Orange Cran from Alter Ego (light and refreshing). They also serve finger food/appetizers. Great place to wait for your table to be ready at nearby restaurants, and of course a fun place to chill with friends (I love the patio!)
google avatar

Tyler R.

Yelp
This is cider paradise! I am more of a brew fan but found a couple here that are pretty dang good! Their pineapple cider is truly on point. Lets put it this way, I have never seen a place with so many options of ciders in my life! 40 something options! How are you supposed to decide!? Atmosphere was great! It was a Timbers game night and they had it playing on a large projector. We opted to sit on the porch that overlooks the city and surrounding roads. Let me tell you, this is the place to be on a summer/warm night. We enjoyed the sunset and warm weather with a sip of cider. (alright this is getting to deep...) Sadly have to give 4 stars as the workers are not the most friendly and don't care for talking about beer..... Bottom line--- Do you like cider? This is your heaven. GO!
google avatar

Samuel W.

Yelp
I live pretty close proximity to here and hadn't been yet. Got the mango excelsior some wings and chicken nachos. Split it with my cousin. The wings weren't worth it. But the nachos were great and most importantly the cider was very tasty and pretty strong at 9%. Overall I'd come back and try more of the ciders.

Yelp
So good to have a schilling time during weekday afternoon!

Lulu C.

Yelp
Fantastic ciders and delicious gluten free food. I never would've found this place on my own. I was with friends at Rogue, and our server recommended it as another local stop. The flight was a nice way to try multiple ciders. Everyone at our table decided that D's Wicked Baked Apple Pie was the winner!
